"Struggling": Sad update on Molly Meldrum's health

A close friend of Molly Meldrum has shared a sad update on his health, after he failed to show up for a special Countdown event.

With November 2024 marking 50 years since Countdown first aired, the Royal Australian Mint has launched a commemorative coin for the anniversary, holding an event in Melbourne in celebration.

However, Meldrum was a no-show at the event, with former Countdown announcer and close from of Molly's Gavin Wood saying he has largely retreated from the public eye as he has struggled with declining health ever since he fell off a ladder in December 2011 which almost killed him.

"The fall, it is all down to the fall, was a horrible thing to have happened," Wood told the Herald Sun.

"He is 82 in January. He has been a public figure all his life and I think he is just enjoying a quieter life."

"He is still Molly, still interested in music and still has it turned up to 11. He is still naughty, he has still got that spark that we love, but I think he is enjoying life being a normal person."

Although Meldrum did not attend the coin launch, he did release a statement, sneaking in his famous catchphrase whenever he recommended an artist on Countdown.

"I am left with such fond memories of those days and a show that will never be forgotten," Meldrum said.

"We made a difference to the music industry in Australia and so I am thrilled to see commemorative coin being made."

"Do yourself a favour and get one. Iconic Countdown lives on."

Wood said that his former colleague Meldrum would be "chuffed" to see something "as beautiful and as imaginative" as the coins commemorating the show on the special anniversary.

Update on search for Samantha Murphy

A fresh search for the body of Samantha Murphy, 51, has been initiated months after her disappearance and the discovery of her mobile phone near a dam. Murphy was last seen on February 4 when she left for a 14km run through the Canadian State Forest, a route she frequently travelled.

In a statement, a Victoria Police spokesperson said, "Detectives from the Missing Persons Squad as well as a range of specialist resources from across Victoria Police, New South Wales Police, and the Australian Federal Police are involved in the search."

The renewed search, which began on Tuesday and continues today, focuses on bushland near Grenville, a new area in the Ballarat region. Despite numerous efforts, Murphy's body has yet to be found. The police have urged the public to stay away from the area to avoid interfering with the investigation.

Murphy’s mobile phone was recovered in June by detectives near a dam in Buninyong, about 10 minutes from her home in Ballarat. The phone was found undamaged in its teal-coloured case and was still functional. Earlier searches were conducted in the Buninyong area and the Canadian State Forest, but they yielded no results.

The disappearance of the Victorian mother has gripped the local community, with many participating in earlier searches. Her family has been kept informed of the ongoing investigation.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, remains in custody as the primary suspect in Murphy’s disappearance. Stephenson, the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, was last in court on August 8 and is not expected to appear again until November 14.

Prosecutors requested a 12-week adjournment during the August hearing to review a brief of evidence, which includes extensive CCTV footage.

The investigation continues as police and specialists work tirelessly to locate Murphy’s remains and bring closure to her family.

Images: Supplied

"Lucky to be alive": Concerning Andrew O'Keefe update

Andrew O'Keefe will remain in jail after his bail was revoked, just days after being arrested on drug charges.

The former TV host was arrested on Monday and charged with drug possession after police searched a nearby car and allegedly found methamphetamine.

His arrest came just hours after the 52-year-old was discharged from the hospital, after he was revived by paramedics in the early hours on Sunday morning after an alleged drug overdose.

In Waverley Local Court on Tuesday, Magistrate Jacqueline Milledge said O’Keefe was “lucky to be alive” as she read a police statement of facts on an application to detain the former TV host rather than let him out on bail again.

O'Keefe was out on bail at the time of the alleged overdose, after allegedly breaching a court order, trespassing and intimidating a man in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in July.

O’Keefe’s lawyer did not argue against the application and the magistrate revoked his bail, meaning he will remain custody before his return to court in October.

“If he wants to stay alive that’s the best thing to do,” Milledge said.

O’Keefe’s lawyer suggested a possible application for release on the next occasion for O’Keefe to receive treatment but Milledge said “a “highly persuasive” argument would be required.

O’Keefe’s frequent appearances in court are “absolutely tragic” and “very, very sad,” the magistrate said.

“He’s a frequent flyer, he’s just so used to it,” she said.

“The mental health applications, the rehab, all been tried, and tested, and failed.

“I just don’t see the same thing over and over again is going to be working for him and, god help him, it’s a shame that he doesn’t have an epiphany.”

Love you Negsy.”

Ned ended his emotional post by all paying tribute to his mother for her endless love and care for his dad.

“P.s. My mum took this photo and is by his side most days helping him through, helping him remember (even the slightest thing) and feel. He is such a strong little boy and we are so so proud of him,” she said.

The woman also confirmed that Luka suffered serious burns, with those under his neck and chest likely to scar, as the prospect of a skin graft has been raised by doctors.

She said she had been "blown away" by the support she and her family had received through a GoFundMe campaign set up to pay for Luka's medical expenses.

"This GoFundMe will be able to support Luka with all of his ongoing care needs which is truly a weight lifted off our shoulders," the woman said.

“Not only that it will also support myself, my family, and ongoing mental health, given the nature of the event this will be an extremely long journey ahead for us all.”

The fundraiser, that had a goal of just $5,000, surpassed $110,000 on Monday.

Police earlier described the man they wish to speak to in connection to the attack as between 30-40 years old, of a proportionate build, with tanned skin. He was wearing a black hat, glasses, a shirt and shorts at the time Luka was burned.

Major update in long-delayed William Tyrrell inquest

Almost 10 years after William Tyrrell went missing, an inquest into his disappearance is finally set to resume.

The three-year-old disappeared from his foster grandmother’s home in Kendall on September 12th 2014, in what has become one of Australia’s most notorious missing persons cases.

For 18 long months, an inquest before Deputy State Coroner Harriet Grahame examined William’s disappearance and suspected death, before it was adjourned in October 2020.

Ms Grahame’s findings were due to be handed down in June 2021, but the inquest was pushed back indefinitely as prosecutors grappled with evidence concerning the missing boy’s foster mother.

As the investigation into William's disappearance continues, his body has never been found and his foster parents have persistently denied having any involvement.

Now, after three years of delays, a directions hearing at the NSW Coroner’s Court in Western Sydney on Tuesday confirmed a final block of hearings will commence later in the year.

Starting the weeks of November 4th and December 16th, witnesses will be recalled to the stand as the inquest is formally recommenced, with the court saying that the witness list and list of issues was set to be finalised within a few days.

No one has been charged in the case of William's disappearance and a $1 million reward for information still stands.

Whilst her recovery has been miraculous, Shylah’s injuries will carry lifelong impacts,” Mehta said.

"A bit grim": Sam Neill shares cancer update

Actor Sam Neill has shared a heartbreaking update on his cancer journey, which he has said he will eventually succumb to.

Last year, the 76-year-old revealed that he was battling rare blood cancer, angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma.

After undergoing chemotherapy that failed to work, Neill's doctor switched him to an anti-cancer drug which has put him in remission for more than 12 months.

The treatment requires him to have infusions every two weeks, and while his condition is currently stable, the drug will eventually stop working.

Speaking candidly to the Herald Sun about his condition, he said while he is maintaining a positive outlook, the gruelling treatment is impacting the way he lives his life.

“It’s just meant that every second week it was a case of forget about the weekend because that would be a bit grim,” he explained of his treatment schedule. “But other than that, it’s great to be alive and working and in beautiful places, like York.”

Last year, Sam insisted while he wasn’t afraid of death after battling the disease, he “would be annoyed” because he still has plenty he wants to achieve.

“I’m prepared for that,” Neill said at the time, adding that while dying would be “annoying” he’s not “remotely afraid” of it.

“The last thing I want is for people to obsess about the cancer thing because I’m not really interested in cancer," he added. Hollywood star's heartbreaking health update

Gena Rowlands's son has shared his mother's heartbreaking health battle, that is reminiscent of one of her most iconic movie character's similar health issue.

The 94-year-old Golden Globe winner who portrayed an older version of Rachel McAdam’s character, Allie, in the 2004 film The Notebook, has been battling Alzheimer’s disease for the past five years.

While discussing the film's 20 year anniversary, Nick Cassavetes, the director of the movie and Rowlands’ son, revealed his mother’s diagnosis.

“I got my mum to play older Allie, and we spent a lot of time talking about Alzheimer’s and wanting to be authentic with it, and now, for the last five years, she’s had Alzheimer’s,” Cassavetes told Entertainment Weekly of Rowlands’ character, who also had dementia.

“She’s in full dementia. And it’s so crazy — we lived it, she acted it, and now it’s on us.”

Back in 2004, Rowlands — whose mother, actress Lady Rowlands, also suffered from the disease — explained why playing Allie was “particularly hard.”

“This last one — The Notebook, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks — was particularly hard because I play a character who has Alzheimer’s,” she told O magazine.

“I went through that with my mother, and if Nick hadn’t directed the film, I don’t think I would have gone for it — it’s just too hard. It was a tough but wonderful movie.”
