"It’s disgusting": Sam Kerr's baby announcement ruined by trolls

The Matildas captain Sam Kerr and her fiancée Kristie Mewis have announced they are pregnant with their first child, but their news was sadly met with homophobic comments from online trolls.

The football power couple took to Instagram to announce the news with a photo of them holding ultrasound photos.

“Mewis-Kerr baby coming 2025!” the post read.

While Kerr's teammates Mary Fowler, Teagan Micah, Kyah Simon and Lydia Williams congratulated the couple, they had to turn off their comments following online trolls making "disgusting" homophobic comments across social media.

The trolls' behaviour has been condemned by sports commentators, fans and pride groups alike.

“Extremely disappointing to see even the slightest negative reaction to Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis’s fantastic news," BBC sport commentator Tom Overend began.

“Couples are free to do what they choose, and you can be a good parent whatever your gender, creed, colour or anything.

“We are in 2024 folks.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Kerr (@samanthakerr20)

David Shaw, a Manchester United fan, posted: “I can’t believe some of the comments I’ve seen about Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis news.

“Seen one saying how’s that legal and called it bulls***. Quite frankly it’s disgusting”.

Over the weekend, the Women’s Super League launched a “Rainbow Laces” campaign, promoting LGBTQ+ inclusion initiatives.

Women’s football commentator Paul Wheeler wrote: "'Homophobia isn’t a thing in women’s football' - Also women’s football, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis announce they’re having a baby and comments are full of “fans” spouting the worst kind of homophobic crap on Rainbow Laces weekend”.

Chelsea Pride, an LGBTQ+ support group for Chelsea fans also said: “Homophobia has no place in football, at Chelsea, or in our society."

“It’s heartbreaking and infuriating to see social media flooded with hateful comments when we should be celebrating love, pride, and unity.

“Over the weekend and today, our club was forced to shut down comments and even delete posts, posts that should have been shining moments of joy, from the powerful symbolism of Rainbow Laces to the incredible news that Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis will welcome a child in 2025.

“’No to Hate’ isn’t just a slogan; it’s a battle cry. It’s a reminder that we must keep fighting for what is right, for true acceptance, and for a game that embraces everyone without exception.

“At Chelsea Pride, we stand against every act of homophobia with unwavering strength and passion. We fight for a football world where every player, fan and family can live openly and be celebrated, without fear or prejudice.

“This is our game, our club and our unwavering commitment: Hate will never win here. We will always stand for love, unity and an inclusive future for football.”

The couple have since turned on the comments again.

Images: Instagram

“Homophobic” line removed from Spider-Man

A “homophobic” line from the action fantasy 2002 Spider-Man film has been removed following a recent airing on Britain’s ITV2.

The first film of the trilogy starring Tobey Maguire aired on TV recently, with one eagle-eyed fan noticing the change.

“They removed Peter Parker’s homophobia,” the Twitter user wrote along with a clip of the scene.

The scene where the line was cut is at the beginning of the film where Peter Parker is learning about his newfound skills and went to a wrestling match.

He is seen hanging on the cage away from pro wrestler Bone Saw and says: "That's a cute outfit. Did your husband give it to you?"

However, the scene changed to just say: “That’s a cute outfit”.

THEY REMOVED PETER PARKER'S HOMOPHOBIA pic.twitter.com/QmbFabVpc7

— PaperPlane (@PaperPlaneTF) April 23, 2022

The Twitter user however pointed out that the original line was in fact “not homophobic. It's been a joke for a little while now that Spider-Man is insensitive to this man's husband.”

Many people praised the change, while others questioned why they couldn’t use something else that doesn’t attack sexuality.

“Why cut the joke out entirely? Why not try to change it somehow?” someone asked.

“So many things happen in this world, countless deaths, robberies, and many other things. And what makes people mad is a JOKE in a SPIDER-MAN MOVIE. Learn to take a joke. seriously. And the intent behind it wasn’t even bad, y’all just want something to be mad about,” another wrote.

“The fact that they removed a joke is baffling guess comedy is hate speech,” someone mentioned.

“What was wrong with the joke in the first place?” a user asked.

“Everyone can’t seem to understand that Spider-Man says this because Bonesaw is very clearly a big, burly macho man (no pun intended) alpha-male, kinda guy with his own team of 4 beautiful women/cheerleaders at the ringside and implying that he’s gay is a good way to rile him up,” another explained.

Image: Twitter

Karl Stefanovic slams Israel Folau's possible return as "appalling"

The NRL has been urged to "take a stand" and ban Israel Folau for good, as rumours about his return continue to swirl.

The Dragons are reportedly attempting to bring Folau back into the game on a two-year deal, with the club submitting an application to the NRL to allow the 31-year-old to play.

Folau caused controversy in 2019 after voicing his discriminatory views on homosexuality, which saw him being stood down from the Wallabies.

Karl Stefanovic said the return was "appalling" and urged the NRL to fight back.

"I think it is an appalling decision by the NRL to allow him back into the code," Stefanovic said.

"I think it's way out of line. Given what he said and the hurt he caused. To just somehow then say, 'you know what, it's OK because he doesn't have a platform for his beliefs'.

"He has never apologised for his beliefs. He still believes in that. He still is a homophobe.

"The NRL needs to take a stand on this stuff and they need to take it now... He is not changing his behaviour. He's not changing his views.

"But let's let him play because he can't go on social media? That's an absolute cop out."

If Folau returns, he may have some strict conditions, with the Dragons reportedly set to include social media clauses in his contract.

Stefanovic's co-host Ally Langdon said this is not enough.

"Just looking at his Instagram page this morning, that very offensive quote is still there," she said.

"And perhaps he won't now post other offensive remarks such as this. But he still preaches at church...he still holds these beliefs.

"It's been filmed and it's still being released. So by bringing him back into the league, I think you are still giving him a platform."

Prince Harry makes touching speech in honour of Princess Diana’s HIV work

She’s been gone for 20 years now, but Princess Diana’s ground-breaking work raising awareness for HIV/AIDS and fighting homophobia continues to leave a lasting legacy in the LGBT community.

Yesterday, the woman who ignored the stigma and royal protocol to touch those affected by HIV/AIDS to prove casual contact would not spread the disease, was honoured with a posthumous award from LGBT magazine Attitude, and Prince Harry, who has long been dedicated to continuing her work, accepted it on her behalf.

“In April 1987, my mother was only 25 years old,” the 33-year-old said. “She was still finding her way in public life, but already she felt a responsibility to shine her spotlight on the people and issues that were often ignored.

“She knew that AIDS was one of the things that many wanted to ignore and seemed like a hopeless challenge. She knew that the misunderstanding of this relatively new disease was creating a dangerous situation when mixed with homophobia.

The Princess of Wales’s public meetings with AIDS patients helped to change global perceptions around HIV/AIDS. pic.twitter.com/kl8XvX4y7g
— Kensington Palace (@KensingtonRoyal) October 12, 2017

“People were ostracized from their communities – and sometimes from their families – simply for being ill. Staff who treated the ill, were themselves often turned away from local barbers and restaurants, even though it was proven that HIV could not be passed on from casual contact.

“And we faced the very real risk that thousands would die in the UK – including many young gay men of her generation – without making any progress towards treatment of the disease.

“So when, that April, she shook the hand of a 32-year-old man with HIV, in front of the cameras, she knew exactly what she was doing. She was using her position as Princess of Wales – the most famous woman in the world – to challenge everyone to educate themselves; to find their compassion; and to reach out to those who need help instead of pushing them away.”
