Husband charged after wife’s tragic golf cart death on Hamilton Island

A husband charged with the death of his wife has shared her chilling last words before she tragically died in a golf cart crash on their honeymoon.

Robbie Awad, 32, and his new wife Marina Hanna, 29, were honeymooning in Queensland's Hamilton Island just 10 days after their wedding in June 2022, when the golf cart they were travelling in tipped over.

Ms Hana died at the scene after doing into cardiac arrest.

Ms Awad, who was driving the golf cart when it crashed and walked away uninjured, has pleaded guilty to three charges including not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving.

Appearing in court on Thursday for the first day of his hearing, he pleaded not guilty to the charge of driving without due care and attention causing death.

Taking to the witness stand, Mr Awad said the couple had decided to leave the resort to get something to eat before the crash.

“We were leaving Qualia [resort] in the buggy, I was driving, I drove toward the exit of Qualia, I waited for the [gates] to open. We drove out of the gates at 5 or 4 km/h,” he said.

The 32-year-old told the court that at the time of the crash, he was using his phone to follow directions, even though his wife warned him not to look at his phone while driving.

“I was looking for directions on how to travel to the marina.”

“My wife said, ‘Get off your phone’. I said, ‘What is the worst that could happen? No worries,’ and I put the phone in my pocket.’”

Mr Awad said the couple decided to travel back to their resort after noting that the golf cart wasn't working properly, as it started to slow down when it began travelling up a hill.

“I would estimate it was travelling less than walking speed. A very slow walk,” he said.

“’By the time I got to the top of the hill, it was barely moving.”

“[Once I got to the intersection] I could see it was very steep and I couldn’t see around the bend. I looked straight and saw there were no cars, the buggy was moving one metre every two seconds, so I drove the buggy into the flattest part.”

He claimed the buggy accelerated unexpectedly, as he was making the U-turn.

“As I was accelerating, I was moving the steering wheel, but because the buggy wasn’t moving, I ended up doing full turns, then I heard ‘vrrrroom’ and the buggy accelerated very quickly,” he said.

“I started to have the thought, ‘Oh, the buggy might tip over,’ but by the time I could have finished the thought, it had already tipped over.”

Mr Awad’s defence lawyer argued the “tragic accident” was caused by an issue with the battery in the golf buggy.

“It fell over and killed his poor wife and he was devastated — and still is,” he said.

Jock Zonfrillo's widow pays tribute to her late husband

Jock Zonfrillo's widow Lauren has paid tribute to her late husband with a simple but powerful homage.

Up until recently, the marketing expert has been known in a professional capacity by her maiden name Lauren Fried, even after marrying the late chef in January 2017.

However, after appearing on ABC's marketing program Gruen, the mother-of-two was introduced as 'Lauren Zonfrillo'.

Lauren took to Instagram ahead of her debut on the panel show, sharing behind the scenes footage where she is seen in the ABC's hair and make-up department, with the name 'Lauren Zonfrillo' clearly labelled on her dressing room door.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lauren Zonfrillo (@laurenzonfrillo)

The marketing expert has also changed her name on her LinkedIn, Instagram and X, formerly known as Twitter, profiles.

In the days before the one year anniversary of Jock's death, Lauren shared an emotional video to social media explaining how she plans to share Jock's legacy with his fans, saying she wants to focus on posting previously unseen content of the chef.

She began by saying how she has been "finding her feet" as a "solo parent" and how her two kids have adjusted after their tragic loss.

In the emotional video, she shared, "Next week will be a year since we lost Jock. “Selfish” husband leaves wife behind for first class upgrade on their honeymoon

A woman has shared her frustration over a journey she took with her new husband to their honeymoon destination.

The wife’s “selfish” husband was quick to ditch her on their way to Mexico for their honeymoon after he was offered an upgrade to business class.

The woman took to Reddit to share the story of what began at the airport shortly after their wedding, while also explaining that as a frequent flyer, she had racked up a hefty amount of points.

In comparison, her new husband is an anxious flyer, who often relies on her to keep him calm during take off and landing.

“When I booked our flights I requested to use my points if an upgrade to business class became available, but made it clear I only wanted this upgrade if two seats became available... and then I basically forgot about it,” the wife explained in a Reddit thread.

“Then comes the day of our flight. I was so excited for this trip, I checked us in online, all is going well, and then when we go to board, the employee scanning our boarding passes stops us.”

“She says it seems that my husband was upgraded to business class, but only him and asks if that is okay.”

The wife immediately replied, “No, we are on our honeymoon and would like to stay together”, however, her husband interjected, saying, “No it’s fine, I’ll go to business class.”

Approximately 500 of her hard earned points went to his upgrade, while she was left alone in economy for the trip.

Stunned by his response, she said: “I look at him in complete shock and he tells me that I fly all the time and have been in business class before, but he hasn’t. So he deserves a chance to experience it.

“I see we are holding up the line, so I feel like I just need to agree and get on the plane.

“To say I am p***ed off is an understatement.”

After boarding the flight, the woman became overcome with emotion over her new husband’s actions.

“Within maybe five to 10 minutes of sitting there, trying to hold back tears because my husband left me alone on our flight during our honeymoon — and use my points for his upgrade no less, he starts to text me saying he feels anxiety over flying.”

Instead of expressing sympathy, she decided to ignore his texts.

“I stopped looking at my phone,” the wife said.

Just one hour into the flight, her husband began looking for her in economy class.

“He comes to the back of the plane to find me, offers me half of his business class breakfast and asks me why I was ignoring him... because he was scared and needed me to tell him it’d be okay since I am such an experienced flyer,” she explained.

“I told him maybe he should have thought about that before leaving me alone before our honeymoon even really began.”

“He gets angry, tells me that this may be the only time he gets to fly business class and he was giving me half his breakfast to make up for it so I could at least be supportive of his genuine fear.”

When they landed in Mexico, she tried to just “move on and forget” about what her husband did so they could enjoy their honeymoon.

“But he guilt tripped me about not comforting him via text before take off and now I am wondering if I am being unreasonable and should have just let him enjoy his time in business class and assure him it’d be okay?” she wondered.

She asked the internet whether she was being the a**hole for not being supportive of her husband.

Many jumped to the wife’s defence, with one suggesting, “Definitely not the a**hole. Tell your husband actions have consequences and since he wanted to be in business class without you, he gets to fly without you. The fact he did this on your honeymoon trip just makes it worse.”

Husband and wife with dementia reunite after 30 years apart

A former husband and wife with dementia have been reunited after 30 years apart when they moved into the same care home.

Nancy, 86, and Stan, 91, were first married in 1957 in Edinburgh, despite their parents "forbidding" their romance and not approving of their union.

The couple went on to have three children and lived happily, until Nancy was nearly killed by a brain haemorrhage when she was in her mid-50s.

Nancy had to undergo life-altering surgery and a lengthy recovery time, which ultimately led to the downfall of her relationship with Stan and they filed for divorce.

After their split, Stan met another woman when he was in his 70s, while Nancy never had another romance.

When Nancy and Stan entered their 80s, they both began to show signs of dementia and could no longer care for themselves.

Around Christmas time last year, their daughter Karen made the decision to put her father Stan, who suffered a fall while being cared for in Scotland, in the same home as Nancy, which is where she captured the heartwarming footage of them being reunited.

In the clip, Nancy tells Stan he is "not bad looking for his age", while her ex-husband replies, "I recognise your face but I couldn't place who it was".

The couple then agree to go on a date together and have a cup of tea, before having a kiss for "old time's sake."

The video was posted to TikTok by Karen's daughter Sarah-Ashleigh, who spoke to the Daily Mail about the family's decision to put both Nancy and Stan in the same care home.

"We were so worried how this would go. "We want Sam home": Distraught husband speaks out

Samantha Murphy's distraught husband has issued a desperate plea to the community for knowledge about his wife's whereabouts, two weeks after she went missing.

The 51-year-old mother from Ballarat took off for her daily run in the early hours of the morning of February 4th, and was never seen again.

With Ms Murphy's disappearance now being labelled as "suspicious" by police investigators, Mick Murphy has shared an emotional message for the community to come forward with information about his wife.

“We want Sam home please,” he told 7News.

Mr Murphy told the outlet his family are “doing the best we can under the circumstances”.

He has made several pleas to the public for anyone to come forward if they had information about the mother-of-three’s disappearance.

“People just don’t vanish into thin air. Someone’s got to know something,” he told reporters on Thursday.

On Wednesday, police officially labelled Samantha's disappearance as "suspicious", as their investigation continues.

“Call it unusual, call it suspicious. But it certainly is of significant concern to us,” Chief Commissioner Shane Patton said on Wednesday.

He went on to say that there were still no new leads in the investigation, headed by the Missing Persons Squad.

“It’s certainly unusual when we haven’t been able to locate any trace of her or any other evidence within that period of time,” he said.

“It’s suspicious, whether that means there’s foul play involved or not, I don’t know, but obviously detectives are investigating a matter where a woman’s been missing for a significant period of time.”

Tragic new details emerge as Vyleen White's husband speaks out

The tragic incident that occurred at a shopping centre carpark south of Brisbane over the weekend has left the community of Ipswich in shock and mourning as Vyleen White, a beloved grandmother, lost her life in what appears to be a random attack, leaving behind a devastated family and a grieving husband, Victor White.

Mr White revealed tragic new details of the incident when speaking to 7News recently, saying that they should in fact be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary this year. “I’m dealing with it the best way I can at the moment. When they stabbed her, they stabbed me,” Mr White told reporters.

Mrs White, aged 70, was shopping at Town Square Redbank Plains accompanied by her six-year-old granddaughter when she was allegedly attacked by a group of teenagers. The motive behind the attack, as stated by detective acting superintendent Heath McQueen, appears to simply have been the theft of her car, a Hyundai Getz.

Tragically, Mrs White's injuries proved fatal, despite the efforts of first responders, including a doctor who was alerted by the young witness of the alleged attack. Mr White expressed his disbelief and sorrow over the senseless attack, saying he believes his wife had been stabbed under the arm, into her chest, and that she “couldn’t even lift her arms up” to defend herself because she suffered from arthritis in both of her shoulders.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, a 16-year-old boy from Bellbird Park has been charged with Mrs White's murder, while four other teenagers face charges related to the theft of her vehicle.

Premier Steven Miles visited the White family to offer condolences, though Mr White expressed his frustration with the government's perceived lack of action in addressing such acts of violence. Despite the outpouring of support from the community, Mr White remains in a state of shock, struggling to comprehend the reality of life without his beloved wife.

As the investigation continues and the legal process unfolds, the memory of Vyleen White will be cherished by those who knew her, and her tragic passing serves as a stark reminder of the need for greater vigilance and community support in preventing such senseless acts of violence.

Images: 7News / Facebook

Husband arrested over murder of beloved Nonna

Frank Dimasi, 91 has been charged over the murder of his wife, Maria, 85, who was found dead inside the couple's home over the weekend.

Maria was found with multiple stab wounds inside the couple's home in Findon, Adelaide, at around 11:20pm on Saturday.

Frank was arrested at the scene and charged over the murder of his wife of over 50 years on Monday.

He is currently under police guard at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, having suffered from self-inflicted and non-life threatening wounds, according to SA police. He is also reported to suffer from a "neurological disability".

Maria was a beloved member of the Italian community in Adelaide.

She was regarded as the "neighbourhood matriarch” and was well-known because of her love for cooking, including making meals for the vulnerable.

She was heavily involved with the family's taxpayer-funded meal service, Nonna’s Cucina, that even Health Minister Mark Butler recognised her hard work and described her as "extremely generous".

“Maria lit up the kitchen at Nonna’s Cucina,” he said. “She was always extremely generous and made sure no one ever left her company hungry.

“Maria gave so much to her community and will be greatly missed by her loved ones and everyone who had the pleasure to meet her.”

South Australia Premier Peter Malinauskas also paid tribute to the beloved great-grandmother and described the murder as "tragic".

“On a personal level, Maria Dimasi was a very significant contributor to our state, particularly in the western suburbs’ Italian community,” said the premier.

“Nonna’s Cucina, which will be very well-known to a lot of South Australians, did amazing work delivering meals to people that are vulnerable, particularly the elderly.

"This is a good person who has lost their life in tragic circumstances.”

The premier is currently facing increasing pressure to authorise a Royal Commission into domestic violence in the state, after five women have allegedly been killed at the hands of a partner since November 16, according to The Advertiser.

The publication also reported that this is "the worst DV toll in Australia's history".

In their first public statement issued through the police late Monday, the couple's family paid tribute to Maria, who they described as “loving mother to her four children, her 10 grandchildren and a great grandmother to 13”.

“Maria had a caring nature and shared love and happiness to those around her,” they said in the statement obtained by The Advertiser.

“Maria was the centre of our family, bringing us together to care for and support each other. Family was everything to Maria, and she was everything to her family.

“Maria has warmed the hearts of many and we would like to extend our gratitude for the support the community has provided as we come to terms with our loss.”

They added: “The support truly shows that Maria was loved by many and has made a positive impact to the community.

“We will always remember Maria for her warmth, caring nature, compassion and her beautiful smile.”

They also thanked Nonna’s Cucina for allowing her to spread joy with the community and said that they will come together as a family in the coming days to celebrate Maria's life.

“We thank Nonna’s Cucina for supporting Maria to share her joy with the community.

“The past few days have been difficult for our family as we process the grief of losing our beautiful mother and Nonna.”

Images: Facebook/ Nine News.

It's a very sad situation for both of us and a very hard decision to come to," she continued.

"I think it takes a lot of bravery and two grown ups to decide what's not right for them at a certain time and to realise that you are better off going separate ways."

Jones added that she is now "out in the wilderness on [her] own", but is doing relatively well despite the "very sad announcement".

"I'm actually OK. "I couldn't save her": Husband's heartbreaking warning against weight loss drugs

A grieving father has issued a desperate plea against using weight loss drugs after his wife passed away from possible side effects just months into her treatment.

Roy Webster told 60 Minutes that his wife Trish simply wanted to lose weight before their daughter's wedding, so she decided to take Ozempic - a drug which was originally designed to treat diabetes, but is now being prescribed as a weight loss drug.

The 56-year-old mother lost 16 kilos from taking Ozempic and another weight loss drug, Saxenda, but she was also frequently ill and in January "something went seriously wrong".

"I couldn't save her, that's the hard part," Webster said.

"If I knew that could happen, she wouldn't have been taking it."

The heartbroken Aussie father added that his wife tragically passed away in his arms.

"She had a little bit of brown stuff coming out of her mouth and I realised she wasn't breathing, and started doing CPR," he said.

"It was just pouring out and I turned her onto the side because she couldn't breathe."

Trish's death certificate reveals that her cause of death was an acute gastrointestinal illness, although there isn't a direct link to weight loss drugs, Webster believes that they contributed to his wife's death.

"I never thought you could die from it," he warned other Aussies.

In the same interview with 60 Minutes, Endocrinologist Dr Kathryn William, said that there's "growing evidence the active ingredient in drugs like Ozempic can cause digestive complications."

"When we prescribe them, we warn people," she said.

"So if I say to someone, 'yes, it might be that you do vomit once or twice, but if you are having recurrent vomiting, you need to let me know and you need to stop the medication'."

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia is investigating local cases and encourages people like Webster to report their concerns.

Webster also reportedly wants a coronial inquest to examine his wife's death.

"She shouldn't be gone, you know," he said. "It's just not worth it, it's not worth it at all."

Image: 60 Minutes

Widow "cranky" after Qantas denied late husband's points claim

A widowed grandmother has been left frustrated after Qantas refused to let her claim the 6,800 frequent flyer points in her late husband's account.

72-year-old Rhonda told Yahoo that she reached out to the airline after Brian - her husband of 52 years - passed away in May.

Rhonda hoped to claim his frequent flyer points, but was met with a brutal rejection letter instead.

While they offered their "sincere condolences", it also stated Qantas' "terms and conditions" didn't allow such a transfer, and Rhonda was asked to send through a copy of Brian's death certificate so they could close his account.

"I know it's not a lot of points but it's the principle of it because, damn, you get hardly anything out of it anyway," she told Yahoo.

"I just thought it would naturally come to me so, once I told them he passed away, I could've easily gone in and transferred them to myself without telling them but I wanted to do the right thing."

Four months later, Qantas announced that from October they would change their policy to allow next of kin to claim frequent flyer points.

When Rhonda heard about this, she reached out to the airline again.

"I immediately wrote back and said that, 'After hearing the news item, I was under the impression you were now looking at this'," she said.

"I haven't heard a word back since. I don't know if they're just ignoring me.

"I've just had enough," she added.

The grandmother-of-five added that she was "cranky" with the airline.

"Everywhere I turn there's a barrier, and what's 6,800 points to them?

"They are trying to keep their reputation intact and until I heard that announcement I was done with it. Now I still haven't heard and I am cranky about it," she concluded.

Fortunately, after Rhonda shared her complaints with the media, Qantas eventually credited her the points, although she remains unimpressed with the "ridiculous" process.

A Qantas spokesperson has also offered their sincere apologies to Rhonda.

"Our customer team have been in contact with her to advise that her husbands' points have now been transferred to her frequent flyer account," they said.

Rhonda said that she hopes to use the points for a holiday and explore the outback in the iconic The Ghan train next year.

Image: Daily Mail/ Getty

"Uniquely, magically, indescribably us": Read the emotional love letter from Suzanne Somers' husband

Just one day before her death, Suzanne Somers' husband gave her a handwritten love letter as part of an early birthday present.

Somers' husband, Alan Hamel, gave the letter to his wife of 45 years just 24 hours before she passed away at the age of 76.

According to Somers' publicist, R. Couri Hay, Hamel “gave it to her a day early and she read the poem and went to bed and later died peacefully in her sleep.”

The emotional poem was an expression of love from Somers' husband, as he struggled to define their intense relationships.

“Love I use it every day, sometimes several times a day. I use it at the end of emails to my loving family. I even use it in emails to close friends. I use it when I’m leaving the house,” the note began, via People.

“There’s love, then love you and I love you!! Therein lies some of the different ways we use love. Sometimes I feel obliged to use love, responding to someone who signed love in their email, when I’m uncomfortable using love but I use it anyway.

“I also use love to describe a great meal. I use it to express how I feel about a show on Netflix. I often use love referring to my home, my cat Gloria, to things Gloria does, to the taste of a cantaloupe I grew in my garden.”

“I love the taste of a freshly harvested organic royal jumbo medjool date. I love biting a fig off the tree. I love watching two giant blackbirds who live nearby swooping by my window in a power dive. My daily life encompasses things and people I love and things and people I am indifferent to,” he continued.

“I could go on ad infinitum, but you get it. What brand of love do I feel for my wife Suzanne? Can I find it in any of the above? A resounding no!!!! There is no version of the word that is applicable to Suzanne and I even use the word applicable advisedly.”

“The closest version in words isn’t even close. It’s not even a fraction of a fraction of a fraction. Unconditional love does not do it. I’ll take a bullet for you doesn’t do it. I weep when I think about my feelings for you. Feelings… That’s getting close, but not all the way.”

“55 years together, 46 married and not even one hour apart for 42 of those years. Even that doesn’t do it,” he added. “Even going to bed at 6 o’clock and holding hands while we sleep doesn’t do it. Amanda Keller shares heartbreaking family news

Amanda Keller has spoken candidly about her family's difficult health battle, as she revealed her husband has been diagnosed with Parkinson's.

The radio host announced that her husband, Harley, has been privately battling the life-altering disease for six years, as she opened up about the struggle for the first time.

On Thursday’s episode of her new Double A Chattery podcast, the 61-year-old shared the first signs something with not quite right with her husband, who she has been married to since 1989.

“I first noticed Harley’s footfall around the house changing, like he was dragging his leg, and his hands started to shake, and he said he’d just been whacked in the thumbs as a wicket keeper playing cricket, but I felt something was going on,” Keller told her podcast co-host, forensic psychologist Anita McGregor.

“I know Harley so well, and how protective he is of his inner core, he was absolutely scared and in denial, and who would blame him.”

After the initial symptoms began, Harley was given the diagnosis of Parkinson's, which shocked the family to the core.

“When he came home [from the doctor], we both just sat there completely numb,” Keller remembered.

“Two days later, I went with our eldest son Liam to an open day – he was in Year 11 – and I fought tears all day just looking at these people at the beginning of their journey, and I was so envious.

“I had such a flashback to when that was me. And I thought, ‘Their journey is just starting.’ And something closed off for me."

“I don’t necessarily feel that now, but this is how I felt in the early days.”

Keller went on to say her initial reaction was to be “cross” with her husband, as she would attempt to correct his posture and speech.

“All the things that it [Parkinson’s] does [to you], I thought, ‘why isn’t he fighting it?’ And of course I’ve come to see he can’t control this, and neither can I, and that’s been a big lesson for me. So I’ve become kinder, and sadder,” she said.

“[I’ve changed] trying not to feel like I have to control it. Because it’ll kill me. And he doesn’t want that.”

The radio host admitted she sometimes "hates herself" for being frustrated with her husband, while also mourning their life before his diagnosis.

“I miss the ease of life. Of going to a restaurant, [but then] Harley’s back gets sore, and he’s quietly spoken so the noise overwhelms him. I miss the ease of travel. It changes us,” she said.

“But we’re not alone in that. Life is this stuff, isn’t it? We talk a lot about long-term relationships, and how popular culture celebrates the beginning and the end."

“But the meat of life, the joy of life, the sadness of life, the true human condition, lies in the middle.”

Dying husband and wife spend their final days holding hands

A married couple have spent their final days holding hands in hospital, after their beds were pushed next to each other so they could be side-by-side as they both passed away.

The couple from Tennessee, Tommy and Virginia Stevens, both 91, were both admitted to the Vanderbilt hospital for unrelated medical issues.

Tommy, who was suffering with Alzheimer’s disease, had been struck down with aspiration pneumonia and sepsis, and was transferred to the hospital's palliative care unit.

The same morning, Virginia suffered a fall as she sustained six broken ribs, a spinal fracture, and a hip injury, and was admitted to the hospital's trauma unit.

As Tommy and Virginia's family were struggling to split time between the two wards, hospital staff were able to pull strings for the longtime lovebirds to be roomed side-by-side.

Virginia was moved into a room near Tommy’s in the Palliative Care Unit, and her hospital bed was scooted against his so she could comfort him as his health continued to get worse, the hospital said.

“He was awake when she came in,” their daughter Karen Kreager said.

“His eyes were open. He wasn’t communicating a lot — just in small whispers. But he knew that she was there and that she was going to be right beside him. They haven’t stopped holding hands the whole time. She won’t let go of him.”

“It reminds me of why we do this work,” Mohana Karlekar, MD, medical director of VUMC’s adult Palliative Care Program told local news station WSMV.

“We take care of people — husbands, wives, mothers, fathers — not patients. We brought this family together during one of their most difficult times with little effort on our part. It involved a call, seeing an extra patient that day and some conversations.”

“From the time we brought Mrs. Stevens over, she held her husband’s hand and fussed in a very loving way with him,” Karlekar said.

“She was able to tell me Monday that she was at peace with what was going on, and she wanted to be there until the end.”

Tommy died on September 8th, just a day before the couple’s 69th anniversary, and Virginia died a few days later on September 17th.

Image credits: Vanderbilt University Medical Center and The Stevens Family
