John Farnham steps out at son's wedding for first time since jaw surgery

Beloved Aussie rock legend John Farnham exuded pride and joy as he stepped out in style at his son Robert's wedding on the weekend. After enduring extensive surgery due to oral cancer, Farnham, now cancer-free, appeared in high spirits at the intimate wedding of his oldest son and his new wife, Melissa.

The 74-year-old icon looked remarkably well and largely unchanged since his challenging surgery in August 2022. In the heartwarming photos shared on Instagram, John posed alongside his son, both beaming with happiness. John looked dapper in a black suit with a bronze tie and matching pocket square, while Rob opted for a stylish white tux with black accents.

The joyous occasion was beautifully captured in a series of family photos, including John's wife, Jill, and other close family members. Fans flooded the comments with heartfelt messages, celebrating the happy family and John's remarkable recovery. "Such a beautiful father and son pic," one fan wrote, while another added, "Congratulations to you both. It's so nice to see your Dad, he looks fantastic! Love to you all."

The bride, Melissa, looked stunning in an off-the-shoulder ivory gown, posing for romantic photos with her new husband against the lush backdrop of their wedding venue. Rob's touching caption on Instagram encapsulated the joy of the day: "Shared the happiest moment with my favourite person in the universe and she said I do. Melissa, my life is forever better that you’re apart of it. You looked radiant, beautiful and elegant. I can’t wait to see what the future has in store for us and I’m truly honoured to have you by my side as my wife for life❤️."

The couple had announced their engagement in November 2022, with Rob expressing his excitement about their future together: "My best friend and love of my life said yes to marrying me. I can't wait to spend the rest of my life with you."

John Farnham's presence at the wedding was particularly special, as it marked a year since his successful battle against cancer. In August 2023, Farnham revealed he was cancer-free, a triumph after numerous surgeries and a challenging recovery process. In a heartfelt statement, he shared his gratitude: "It's been a year since my first surgery and to be honest, I've lost count as to how many other procedures there have been since then. But, I'm home now and I'm a very grateful and happy man. I'm sitting here in my living room lapping up the attention from my beautiful wife, Jill, my boys Rob and James, and my mini Schnauzer, Edmund."

Throughout his recovery, John's family provided updates on his progress. His son Robert shared that his father was "doing fantastic" after a 12-hour surgery for throat cancer and was even dancing a little and walking his dog regularly. "He's really, really happy. He's doing really good, he's super positive," Robert said in an interview.

While it is unlikely that John will perform again after his extensive surgery, the love and joy he shared at his son's wedding are a beautiful reminder of life's precious moments.

Images: Instagram

“Jaw-dropping”: Kyle's outrageous wedding registry revealed

Kyle Sandilands and fiancee Tegan Kynaston are set to walk down the aisle in late April, and like many engaged couples, they’ve set up a gift registry to ensure they’ll receive gifts they actually want.

The list spans from items priced between $45 for a singular Missoni home hand towel and $2,800 for a singular Waterford Crystal Christmas Mastercraft Vase.

Producers of the Kyle and Jackie O show, Mayo and Ella, went through the list in the radio show’s podcast and were not surprised the cheapest gift was still a bit pricey, given Kyle is known for his expensive taste.

According to Mayo and Ella, the weirdest item on the list was a crystal tumbler set of four with a hefty price tag of $500. “I could go to Kmart and get a four pack for $20.” Emma joked.

“Even the cheapest things on this list are still pretty exxy,” Mayo added.

"But $45 for a little hand towel, that's still decent for us, we're not millionaires," Mayo said.

"We'll go that one," Ella said, suggesting the two of them would go halves on the hand towel as a wedding gift.

It’s no surprise that Kyle has an expensive gift registry, as it was reported the ring he gave Tegan had an approximate value of $1.14m.

Kyle proposed to Tegan during a holiday in Port Douglas in January 2022 and in true Kyle fashion, it was an extravagant affair. Aside from the whopping $1.14m ring, the proposal was complete with flowers and a red carpet.

If you’re interested in checking out the extravagant gift list, all of which can be purchased at David Jones, you can find it here.

Jaw-dropping estate with 1km-long driveway up for grabs

A luxe country estate just two hours from Sydney has been listed for sale with an eye-watering price guide between $25-$27.5 million.

The seven-bedroom, six-bathroom estate in the Southern Highlands, inspired by an iconic 19th century mansion in Point Piper, boasts two floors, an underground wine cellar that can store 4,200 bottles, and a kilometre-long driveway that provides the home with a high degree of privacy.

Outside the 2000-square-metre home, the property also boasts rolling pastures, manicured gardens, a pool and a summer house.

Having only been completed in 2007, Christie’s agent Darren Curtis said the home’s current owners have spent the last 14 to 15 years extensively changing its interiors.

“The owners of the estate bought it in 2008 and over the past 14-15 years they’ve made a number of internal changes and major renovations made to the property,” Mr Curtis said.

“Usually when people move into large luxury estates, they have to do up a few rooms here and there and clean up the gardens. This is one of those rare occasions where a person can move into a home and not have to tinker with it too much.

“The buyers that are expressing their interest in this property include those looking for a seachange and a treechange, those returning from overseas - predominantly Chinese buyers - and (those with) a renewed interest in acreage homes.”

Mr Curtis also told The Daily Telegraph that the wine cellar is well-insulated and stays the same temperature all year round.

Located in the village of Robertson, which is a popular wine-tasting area, the estate’s guesthouse has been used as an Airbnb while the main home underwent renovations.

“There’s certainly nothing in this area that has the same stature and weight as this estate, certainly nothing recently that compares to the $25m+ price tag,” Mr Curtis said.

“It’s got a real gravitas to it, the walls are a third of a metre thick and teh current owners also spent quite a bit of time with 65 prime Welsh Black cattle on the 80 hectare estate.”

Images: Realestate.com.au

Sore jaw or damaged teeth? You might be suffering from bruxism

If you’re feeling stressed, you might notice you’re snappier with people or having trouble getting enough sleep.

But, one area of the body that is greatly affected but seldom talked about when it comes to stress can be found in your mouth.

Teeth grinding - also known as bruxism - can occur in almost anyone and result in broken fillings and cracked teeth.

Before you get too worried about your oral health, you should know that everyone grinds their teeth at least a little bit.

“Everybody grinds their teeth a little bit at night, it’s normal and we do it subconsciously - usually during dream sleep,” Dr Tami Yap, a lecturer in oral medicine at Melbourne University, told The Age.

“If sleep is fragmented, you’re not getting solid sleep cycles, or you have a period of stress where you mood is impacted into the night-time, you will probably grind more.”

The problems arise when grinding causes the teeth to become worn down or break, or if it causes the muscles in your face to ache.

Additional symptoms can vary, from temperature sensitivity or a sore jaw to tension headaches or pieces of your teeth breaking off in your mouth.

Though there isn’t a simple way to “switch off” tooth grinding, Yap explained, there are some things you can do to manage it.

What makes us grind our teeth?

According to Dr Elizabeth Milford, a dentist and scientific relations consultant for Oral-B, tooth grinding can be triggered by increased anxiety, not getting enough exercise, and poor sleep habits.

Other habits can also exacerbate night-time tooth grinding, such as smoking, drinking large amounts of alcohol, and taking recreational drugs. But these habits are more influential on how much we grind our teeth during the day.

Daytime tooth grinding is often triggered by our mood, habits, and stress levels.

“When we are worried or highly stressed, we are physiologically perceiving a low-grade threat,” Yap explained. “And when this happens, stress hormones run around the body and the sympathetic system is engaged because the body is prioritising you to fight or flight.”

With this comes extra tension in your muscles, with people often holding their teeth together like you would clench your fist.

“And if you were clenching your fist, it would be very clear you shouldn’t be doing that. Similarly, if you’re touching your teeth together at times other than eating, you’re going to be loading your teeth more, and you’re going to get cracks, and possibly muscle pain.”

What can you do about it?

Minimising tooth grinding requires a holistic approach. Consciously choosing the position of your mouth and jaw and thinking about what our facial muscles are doing can help reduce it.

“Teeth should only be touching when you’re eating, maybe when you phonate certain words and sometimes when you swallow,” Dr Yap said. “That amounts to a few minutes a day, the rest of the time the teeth should actually be apart.”

Dr Yap recommends focusing on breathing, since this helps you become “more aware of how your mood and your stress is impacting changes on your body”.

Treatment can also include jaw exercises, relaxation techniques, and custom-made dental appliances that reduce pressure on teeth.

Dentists often recommend night guards, but becoming more aware of how we’re feeling and how our body is reacting will pay off in the long run.

ALDI shopper's fury after jaw-dropping find

An ALDI customer has spoken of her frustration after discovering large amounts of produce "dumped" in the supermarket skip bins at the back of her local store.

Taking to Facebook, shopper Danielle shared images that show bags of potatoes, tomatoes, bread and other fresh fruit and vegetables in the waste units.

She also took photos of meat, eggs, pet food, cheese, small goods and other popular buys taken in a household kitchen, but apparently ripped straight from the bins as well.

To the naked eye, most of the produce appears to be intact and fit to eat.

“How about you pay attention instead to what’s going out your back dock and into the bins. Look at this!” said Danielle in her post, tagging in ALDI Australia.

“Perfectly good food dumped by you EVERY SINGLE DAY. How much is that costing you?”

Danielle's post sparked furious reactions from commenters, with one saying she was "literally shocked".

An ALDI spokesperson has told 7NEWS.com.au that the supermarket “actively” donates to food rescue groups and only disposes of foods that are ‘inconsumable’ and pose a health risk.

“We have a number of processes and policies in place to ensure that very few products on our shelves end up as waste,” the spokesperson said.

“Every ALDI store in Australia is linked to one or more food rescue partners including OzHarvest, Foodbank and SecondBite and in 2020 alone, we donated over 10 million meals to charity partners and more than 66,000kg of non-food items.

“We will only discard product from our stores should it be unsuitable for sale or donation.

“While we actively donate to food rescue organisations, our partners have an obligation to provide their communities with food that is still of a high standard and, as such, are sometimes unable to take foods that are inconsumable or considered a high risk, such as meat, eggs and produce.”

One Facebook user had another environmentally-friendly suggestion to combat food waste.

“I guess that legislation, put in place to ensure our collective well-being, forces some of this supermarket behaviour (to change),” she wrote.

“Perhaps enrolment in a food to compost program might at least recycle that deemed unfit for human consumption.”

Doctors feared that things would get worse for Blackman if it wasn’t operated on quickly.

The 71-year-old’s fibula was redesigned into a jaw using a skin graft from his inner thigh, which was used to replace the missing section of his chin.

"I've learnt what it's like to be disabled" - Comedian and voice over professional John Blackman speaking to @Channel7's @EmilyCAngwin. https://t.co/m2X8YvfH4g #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/7dqxe7c9mb
— 7NEWS Canberra (@7NewsCanberra) 29 May 2019

Blackman spoke candidly to 3AW about his struggles.

“It’s like I ploughed into a tree and my life changed forever,” John told Neil Mitchell on 3AW Mornings.

“When I was given the news, my first thought was, ‘I’ve got a full diary full of corporate gigs, I’m going to have to ring them all and put them on hold.”

Blackman initially thought that the purple lump on his chin was a pimple and it wasn’t properly examined in time until doctors realised that things could get worse very quickly.

As Blackman’s voice is his livelihood, trying to get used to the way he sounds now has been an adjustment.

“I’ve discovered my voice doesn’t have any authority anymore,” John joked.

“I sound like a very drunk Uncle Arthur when I’m on the phone.

“I don’t get any respect as (people) assume I’m a drunk or an old fool.”

However, he now has a newfound respect for people who are different like he is.

“I’ve got a new appreciation for someone who looks different and sounds different,” John said.

“It’s not contagious.”

6 of the most jaw-dropping Hollywood memoirs

It’s always fun when a Hollywood heavyweight breaks ranks and pulls back the curtain to show us common folk the behind-the-scenes carnage of life on the A-list with juicy tell-all memoirs. If, like us, you’re into the kind of revelations that shock and intrigue, these six tell-alls are the ones for you.

1. I, Tina by Tina Turner with Kurt Loder

This memoir from music icon Tina Turner exposed the truth of a seemingly charmed life to shine a light on the abuse Turner suffered at the hands of her husband, Ike, while struggling against seemingly insurmountable odds to forge a career for herself. Simply the best.

2. Tab Hunter Confidential by Tab Hunter

When people talk about explosive tell-alls about Hollywood and what it’s like to be treated as a sexual commodity, you’d be forgiven for imagining that the book in question would come from a woman. But, if we’ve learned anything from the experiences of Anthony Rapp, Terry Cruise, et al, it’s that men can also be victims of sexual assault, manipulation and control. This one shows that today’s problems have been around for decades.

3. My Life in Tights by Burt Ward

Playing Robin to Adam West’s Batman on the 1960s television series would seemingly be an altogether wholesome experience for Burt Ward. But in 1995, the onetime sidekick published this memoir that tells of orgies with large groups of sex workers, being seduced while still in costume, and the struggle that was trying to contain his “package” within the tight, spandex costume.

4. Elvis & Me by Priscilla Presley

If you think you know the true story of Elvis, but you haven’t read Elvis & Me, you’re kidding yourself. Hearing about the life of “The King” directly from his former wife gives insights into the life of the music and film legend you’re not likely to get anywhere else.

5. Dropped Names by Frank Langella

If you like your memoirs full of juicy tales of sexual escapades and jaw-dropping revelations, then this highly enjoyable read from thespian Frank Langella is compulsory. From the time when Elizabeth Taylor invites him to “come on up and put me to sleep”, to the flirtations with Laurence Olivier, Langella holds nothing back in this memoir that will have you hot under the collar and loving every minute.

6. In Spite of Myself by Christopher Plummer

Fans of The Sound of Music will be scandalised by Plummer’s account of his life on stage and screen, much of which is spent drinking and having sex. It seems that Plummer found no need to hold back any details, meaning this book will likely have you blushing while cackling at the petty gossip Plummer peddles about Shirley MacLaine, Glynis Johns, and Deborah Kerr (among many, many others).

What’s the best celebrity memoir you’ve ever read?
