Edwina Bartholomew's surprise return after cancer news

In a heartwarming moment, beloved Sunrise presenter Edwina Bartholomew made her much-anticipated return to the breakfast show after sharing her cancer diagnosis live on air earlier this month.

On Friday, Bartholomew joined the team live from Melbourne as Sunrise geared up for the AFL Grand Final between the Sydney Swans and Brisbane Lions. Radiating positivity, she shared her excitement at being back on the show.

"I’m so well rested," she beamed. "I’ve had a huge, gigantic warm embrace from Sunrise viewers, and I didn’t want to miss today."

Bartholomew’s love for the AFL Grand Final and her Sunrise family brought her back to the desk, with her characteristic humour intact. “I wanted to be back in time, not just for the mini jaffles, but to see you all and be here for the wonderful week in Melbourne,” she quipped.

Hosts Natalie Barr and Matt Shirvington welcomed her back with open arms. “Good to have you back,” Barr said warmly, while Shirvington added, “Great to be back.”

In early September, Bartholomew tearfully revealed to viewers that she had been diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia after a routine blood test. Despite the diagnosis, her positive outlook has been inspiring. "It's a good kind of cancer, it can be treated with a daily tablet. If I take care of myself, I will be completely fine," she reassured viewers.

Bartholomew has been spending time with her family, including husband Neil Varcoe and their two young children, Molly, 4, and Tom, 2. While she plans to ease back into work, she’s expected to appear only a few days a week.

Her return brought a wave of support from viewers, who had sent well-wishes throughout her time off. Bartholomew expressed deep gratitude for the outpouring of love. “I feel very lucky,” she said. "Many of you have been in similar situations or much, much worse, and come out the other side stronger."

In her classy and heartfelt follow-up message online, she spoke about the importance of putting health first, especially for mothers who often put their own well-being last. "Please take care of yourself too, and just check in with your doctor."

With her return, Bartholomew brings back not just her signature charm, but also a reminder of optimism and the importance of self-care. Sunrise viewers are no doubt thrilled to see her smiling face once again, and the show is all the brighter for it.

Images: Sunrise

Olympian's life "a living nightmare" after simple self-check out mistake

A former Olympian has spoken about how her life was ruined after she accidentally failed to scan to items at a self-checkout machine in Walmart.

Canadian athlete Meaggan Pettipiece, 48, was arrested on March 28 in Indiana for theft, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance.

The charges have since been dropped, but Pettipiece lost her prestigious job as the head coach of the Valparaiso University softball team as a result and says her career and reputation have been ruined.

The ordeal began when the self-checkout machine at Walmart reportedly failed to scan the asparagus and ham that Pettipiece intended to purchase.

Walmart security saw that she failed to scan the items — worth a total of $67 — prompting them to call the police despite her having paid $167 for her other groceries.

Pettipiece was arrested and when police searched her they found three disposable vapes in her purse, along with two unopened blister packs containing anti-nausea medication Zofran.

The former athlete said the vapes did not contain any nicotine or THC, and the anti-nausea pills belonged to an assistant coach who had asked her to keep them in her purse during a softball game, days before her arrest.

“We both forgot about them,” Pettipiece told the National Post.

The outlet reported that earlier this month, her lawyer submitted an application for dismissal that included her account of the incident, proof of her assistant’s prescription, and character reference letters.

After reading the application, her charges were dropped by justice officials on September 19, but the damage caused by the incident "changed everything".

“It is bittersweet,” she told National Post.

“I’m happy, obviously, the charges were dismissed. The sad part is the damage it did to my career. It has changed everything in my life.”

Pettipiece resigned as head coach of the softball team shortly after the Walmart incident.

"It's been five months, a living nightmare. I lost my career, I lost my job, the life I was building and it's been really difficult."

Along with the damage to her career, Pettipiece said the effect on her reputation has been equally heartbreaking.

“The softball community is a tight-knit group and it (the news) went through like wildfire,” she said.

“You really do learn who the people are that really believe in you and trust you and are truly a friend for you."

The former athlete is now living in Ohio with her family, and though the charges against her have been dismissed she is worried the damage "can't be reversed".

“The tough thing is, how do you get out to people that you are innocent? And this damage was done for something so ridiculous,” Pettipiece told the outlet.

“I’m not sure of the future. For now, I’m going to stay at home and focus on my kids. I’d like to figure out which direction I’m going to go in.”

Image: Valparaiso University Athletics/ ZikG / Shutterstock.com

Jamie Durie returns to Aussie TV with new show featuring his family

Jamie Durie is set to return to Aussie TV screens with his new renovation show, Growing Home, and this time it will feature his young family.

The international award-winning landscape designer and seven-time Logie-winning host of shows such as Backyard Blitz, The Block and many more, will showcase his skills through the process of building a sustainable and luxury dream home for, and with his family.

“After 26 years making TV shows all over the world, this is the show I’ve always wanted to make. And if we’re creating a show around sustainability, then my family and I need to do it first and practise what we preach,” he said in an interview for Better Homes and Gardens.

Durie has called this the biggest challenge of his career.

It’s been “five long years of planning and researching the most eco-friendly partners, methods and technologies we can find, and we’re finally ready to build this house,” Durie said.

Durie will film alongside his wife singer/songwriter Ameka Jane, who is equally committed to sharing real-life stories with the world, and creating a more authentic life.

“I think there is a common misconception that ‘sustainable’ or ‘eco-friendly’ means that it’s complicated or that we have to compromise on style and function,” Jane said.

“We want to show Australia how easy and accessible it is to create a green home on any scale. Small changes can make a big impact. I was a green novice at the start of this mission, so if I can do it, anyone can.”

Their two kids, three-year-old daughter Beau and 18-month-old son Nash, will also make appearances on the show.

Growing Home aims to show an honest depiction of the struggles and accomplishments of building in the Northern Beaches, while educating on sustainability and what a greener future for Australia could look like.

While no exact date has been released for the show, it is set to air soon on Channel 7 and 7Plus.

You can watch a teaser for the show here.

Images: Instagram/ Growing Home with Jamie Durie

New research proves travelling can slow down the ageing process

It turns out that going on holiday is good for you in more ways than one.

According to new research conducted at Edith Cowan University in Western Australia, travelling can actually slow the ageing process both physically and mentally.

The study, published in the Journal of Travel Research, is believed to be the first-ever that applied the theory of entropy - the general trend of the universe towards death and disorder – to tourism.

"Tourism isn't just about leisure and recreation. It could also contribute to people's physical and mental health," ECU PhD candidate Fangli Hu said.

"Ageing, as a process, is irreversible. While it can't be stopped, it can be slowed down."

According to the research, travelling, exploring new corners of the world and engaging in unique and relaxing activities can stimulate stress responses and elevate metabolic rates, positively influencing metabolic activities and the body's self-organising capabilities.

"Leisurely travel activities might help alleviate chronic stress, dampen over-activation of the immune system, and encourage normal functioning of the self-defence system," Fangli added.

While some people prefer relaxing holidays, others prefer to stay on their feet and keep active during their travels, enjoying the many well-known benefits of exercise.

It can "enhance the body's immune function and self-defence capabilities, bolstering its hardiness to external risks".

In response to their study, the experts suggested that "travel therapy could serve as a groundbreaking health intervention."

Despite the positive results of the research, experts also warned that travelling can exposed to infectious diseases, accidents, injuries, violence, water and food safety issues, and concerns related to inappropriate tourism engagement, which in turn will have the opposite effect on our health.

"Conversely, tourism can involve negative experiences that potentially lead to health problems, paralleling the process of promoting entropy increase," Fangli said.

Jessica Mauboy's exciting family news

Jessica Mauboy is set to become a first-time mum, with reports saying the Aussie singer is pregnant with her first child.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the former Voice Australia coach and her husband Themeli Magripilis will welcome their first baby next year.

The reports claim that Mauboy only broke the happy news to her friends and family last week, with the singer believed to be five months along in her pregnancy.

The 35-year-old singer married her husband at a stunning ceremony in Darwin after meeting when they were both 18 at a nightclub in the Northern Territory capital.

Reflecting on her nuptials in an interview earlier this year, Mauboy told Australian Women's Weekly that the ceremony celebrated both her Indigenous and Indonesian heritage and Magripilis’ Greek heritage.

“It was a very cultural celebration … a cultural fusion. There were moments when Greek music started and Them was there leading everyone in the dance, because he grew up dancing and still dances traditionally,” Mauboy said.

“My dad got everyone up with his traditional (Indonesian) dancing and a lot of our uncles and aunties got up on the guitar and started singing hymns. I was thinking: ‘This is (what it’s all about).'"

Earlier this year, Mauboy revealed to The Daily Telegraph the pair almost split at one point, admitting, “We were eight years in a long distance relationship and we felt really apart, we weren’t doing things together, we weren’t creating a future.”

The singer said the pair eventually worked it out after they moved in together.

New study finds epilepsy drug could reduce sleep apnoea symptoms

New research has found that a drug used for epilepsy could be used to reduce the symptoms of sleep apnoea.

Obstructive sleep apnoea, which affects about one in 20 people, according to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence in England, includes symptoms like snoring and it causes a person's breathing to start and stop during the night, with many requiring an aid to help keep their airways open.

An international study has identified that taking sulthiame, a drug sold under the brand name Ospolot in Europe, may help prevent patients' breathing from temporarily stopping.

This provides an additional option for those unable to use mechanical breathing aids like the Cpap machines.

“The standard treatment for obstructive sleep apnoea is sleeping with a machine that blows air through a face mask to keep the airways open. Unfortunately, many people find these machines hard to use over the long term, so there is a need to find alternative treatments,” Prof Jan Hedner from Sahlgrenska university hospital and the University of Gothenburg in Sweden said.

Researchers conducted a randomised controlled trial of almost 300 obstructive sleep apnoea patients across Europe, who did not use Cpap machines.

They were divided into four groups and given either a placebo or different strengths of sulthiame.

The study measured patients’ breathing, oxygen levels, heart rhythm, eye movements, as well as brain and muscle activity while asleep.

It found after 12 weeks, those taking sulthiame had up to 50% fewer occasions where their breathing stopped, and higher levels of oxygen in their blood. However, a bigger study needs to be done to confirm the beneficial effects on a larger group.

The findings, were presented at the European Respiratory Society Congress in Vienna, Austria.

Erika Radford, the head of health advice at Asthma + Lung UK said the findings were a positive step forward in moving away from having to rely on mechanical breathing equipment.

“This potential alternative to the current main treatment would make it easier for people to manage their condition,” she said.

Image: Shutterstock

7News star lashes out at criticism over news segment

Comedian Mark Humphries has hit back at critics, responding to the criticism surrounding his satirical segment on Channel Seven's evening news.

Many viewers responded angrily to his new gig after the first airing of The 6.57pm News that airs on Friday night, with Humphries admitting he found the controversy over the lighthearted segment "bizarre".

“I was so stunned because I did five years at 7.30, the ABC’s flagship current affairs program, which I think of all the shows to have a comedy segment, that’s even less likely to have one,” he told Stellar Magazine.

“I didn’t know people felt so strongly about the 6 o’clock news and how its integrity must be defended. And, you know, it’s the last three minutes at the end of the week before Better Homes And Gardens. I’ve said this before, but the great thing about The 6.57pm News is that if you want to avoid it, you know exactly what time to tune out. [The reaction] was bizarre.”

He added: “The worst thing that was said about me, that stays with me is, ‘I look like a Ken doll gone wrong!’”

The addition of the satirical segment came courtesy of newly appointed news director Anthony De Ceglie who said the segment “will use satire to cut through political spin and translate current affairs in the universal news language of taking the piss”.

When the comedy segment first aired in July, many were quick to voice their disapproval.

“This was an appalling segment … hire, rather than sack, journos,” said one on 7News’ social media.

“It was a deplorable segment that has no place in a news bulletin,” another added.

Trump escapes second assassination attempt

Former president Donald Trump has escaped a second assassination attempt while playing golf at his private club in Florida.

According to local authorities, a Secret Service agent was one hole ahead of Trump when he spotted a rifle barrel sticking out of the fence, which was later found to be an AK-47 with a scope, at the Trump International Golf Club, West Palm Beach on Sunday.

The Secret Service opened fire on the suspect, who fled the scene only to later be pulled over on the highway and taken into custody.

The FBI said Trump had been the subject of “an apparent assassination attempt” at his Florida golf club.

Officials at a media briefing after the incident said a witness took a photo of the suspect's car as he fled the scene, helping authorities track him down.

The Secret Service officer who was on the course and spotted the weapon was praised for doing a “fantastic job”.

“What they do is they have an agent that jumps one hole ahead of time towards where the [former] president was at, and he was able to spot this rifle barrel sticking out of the fence and immediately engaged that individual, at which time the individual took off,” the Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw said.

“In the bushes where this guy was is an AK-47 style rifle with a scope, two backpacks – which were hung on the fence that had ceramic tile in them and a GoPro, which he was going to take pictures with.”

Trump posted an update on his social media platform to assure his supporters he was unharmed in the attempted assassination.

“There were gunshots in my vicinity, but before rumours start spiralling out of control, I wanted you to hear this first: I AM SAFE AND WELL!” he wrote.

“Nothing will slow me down. I will NEVER SURRENDER! I will always love you for supporting me.”

The attempted shooting comes just months after Trump was injured during another assassination attempt in July while speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania.

"Never been seen before": Fergie reveals new details from 9/11 near miss

Sarah Ferguson, affectionately known as Fergie, has taken to Instagram overnight to share new details of her 9/11 near miss.

24 years on, the Duchess of York, who has previously revealed that she was meant to be in the World Trade Centre's North Tower when the plane struck the building, has shared more details of the day.

Fergie recalled how her friend, billionaire businessman Howard Lutnick, gave her an office on the 101st floor of the World Trade Centre at the time, for her charity Chances for Children.

The charity's logo had a mascot called Little Red, which was eventually made into a doll for a child named PJ who survived the 1995 Oklahoma City Bombings.

On the day of the 9/11 attacks Fergie was due to attend a meeting in the office, but was running late because of an earlier engagement, so she was still on route to the building when the terrorists struck.

"I was driving in the car and I was late for work... and Little Red was found in the rubble," she said in the video.

Fergie opened a box to reveal her own Little Red doll that survived the attacks. While she has previously talked about the doll, this is the first time she revealed what it looked like.

"A fireman picked her up, carried her out, like the fireman that picked up PJ all those years ago in the Oklahoma City Bombing," she continued.

"And CNN filmed it and said, 'Look, a child's doll.' And Larry King said, 'That's no child's doll. That's Fergie's Little Red' and she stands for children's rights all over the world and she's a sign of hope for children.

"What no one has ever seen before and I would like to share this with you is the actual doll that survived in 9/11.

"So here, I have it at home. Normally I talk about Little Red and here is the actual doll that survived.

"You can see the dust from the building — that's never been seen before.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sarah Ferguson (Fergie) (@sarahferguson15)

"And I hope Little Red will be talked about all over the world because she's just a very strong, stoic little person."

She also shared that on the day, Little Red "sat on her desk overlooking Manhattan on that fateful day when the towers came down."

"She came down through the rubble and landed fully intact," she wrote.

"Little Red was carried out of the rubble in the fireman's hat exactly as PJ, a child burn victim, was carried years earlier in the Oklahoma City bombing, where the doll was first inspired to bring hope during difficult times and raise money for aid.

"Little Red now sits in the 9/11 memorial museum and serves as a reminder of hope within the darkness. "Absolute breakthrough": New hope in search for Motor Neurone Disease cure

Melbourne researchers are one step closer to finding a cure for Motor Neurone Disease, with the help technology and stem cell research.

Scientists at The Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health have developed a world-first technology that will speed up the drug testing process to help find an effective treatment and maybe even a cure for the disease.

New machines at the institute can now help determine whether drugs on the market could be used to treat MND in just weeks, a process which previously took decades.

"This is an absolute breakthrough, it's at the cutting edge of technology," Florey MND researcher Professor Brad Turner said.

Animal cells were previously used to test the efficacy of MND drugs, but now thanks to more than 100 MND patients who donated their skin cells to the institute, researchers have a library of stem cells to work with.

The human stem cells can provide scientists with the full scope of the disease, something that they were previously unable to do with just animal cells.

"This is really a game-changer in that we can use their own cells, and we can test drugs directly on their own cells," Florey MND researcher and neurologist Dr Thanuja Dharmadasa said.

Large scale screening will commence thanks to a $5 million grant from the Australian Medical Research Future Fund.

The research is expected to help people like Phil Camden who has been living with the disease for 10 years.

"That's the key to all of us living with MND... we want to do what we can while we can," Camden said.

"We know we're not doing it to find a cure for us. We're doing it for those in the future, my grandkids and their children."

Scientists believe that medication or a cocktail of drugs tailored specifically to a patient is the way forward when it comes to treating the disease.

"Therefore your drug treatments are tailed back to the clinical makeup in the dish and we call that personalised medical treatment," Turner said.

Image: Nine News
