Red Symons' ex-wife Elly lists luxe apartment in award-winning Fitzroy House

Australian-Greek community leader Elly Symons has listed her lavish apartment inside the award-winning Fitzroy House complex.

Symons was married to TV and radio personality Red Symons for over 25 years before they split in 2016, with their former Fitzroy North home selling for a then-suburb record of $5 million in 2018.

She is actively involved in the Australian-Greek community, including her role as vice president of the Australian Parthenon Committee. She co-founded the Acropolis Research Group, which focuses on the restoration of Ancient Greek cultural artefacts.

The 2/75 Argyle Street, Fitzroy property has been Symons’ home for the past three years after purchasing it for $1.375m in 2020, according to CoreLogic records.

The luxe apartment is now on the market with a price guide of $1.55m-$1.65m ahead of its auction on May 13.

It has two bedrooms and is part of architectural firm Piccolo’s development of the heritage-listed corner site known as Fitzroy House, in association with famed architects Jackson Clements Burrows and interior designer Hecker Guthrie, which won a gold award at the 2022 Melbourne Design Awards.

The home features marble and oak finishes, with two modern bathrooms including a “resort-style” ensuite and a freestanding bathtub. The kitchen showcases Gaggenau appliances and marble benchtops.

Jellis Craig Fitzroy partner Charles Atkins declined to comment on the vendor but shared the home had a “fantastic feel” with a high-standard design.

“It has a fabulous terrace facing west which is generous in its proportions,” Atkins said.

He added that the listing had attracted interest from several downsizers seeking a place with convenience and lifestyle aspects, as well as a handful of young professionals.

Aussie speedster Steven Bradbury sells luxe apartment

Aussie Olympian Steven Bradbury has sold his beachside investment apartment in Queensland after holding onto it for over a decade.

The gold medallist skater listed the four-bedroom ground-floor apartment in the coastal suburb of Kings Beach in Caloundra earlier this year and has gone on to offload the flat for an undisclosed price.

After 11 years of owning the apartment, Bradbury initially listed the home for $2 million in May before agents Danelle Wiseman and Jonathan Pattinson of Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate revised the price to $1.8 million, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

Even with the reduction, Bradbury’s potential earnings were more than double the amount his investment company, Pricefinder, paid in 2011.

Prior to its sale on August 16, the home was maintained as a weekender and rental with an asking price of $660 a week in rent.

Sitting just metres aware from the surf of King’s Beach, the 111-square-metre flat includes plenty of luxe amenities, such as its two courtyards - with one on each floor - timber herringbone hard floors in the living areas, and a large granite waterfall bench in the well-appointed kitchen.

The flat also has access to the amenities offered by the Kings Palazzo complex, including a pool and BBQ area shared with just 11 other apartments.

Bradbury, a four-time Olympian, shot to fame after his unlikely win at the 2002 Salt Lake City Winter Olympic Games, getting through the semi-final and earning gold in the final after his competitors all crashed in the final seconds.

Despite trailing behind them all, Bradbury was able to skate into first place, giving rise to the phrase “doing a Bradbury” for winning as an underdog.

Earlier this year, Bradbury took to Instagram to reflect on that fateful win 20 years later.

“I’ll always be seen as an overnight success, but it took me many years of sweat, tears and plenty of blood to get there and I’ll always appreciate those who helped me and backed me against the odds,” he wrote.

“Courage, belief, determination and a little luck, all helped me to be the original #lastmanstanding, and now it’s fantastic to see our next generation of @ausolympicteam legends taking our Winter Olympic Dream into the future!”

Images: @stevenbradburyofficial (Instagram) / Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate

See inside “Jeopardy!” star Alex Trebek’s luxe LA home

Just over a year after Alex Trebek, the beloved host of Jeopardy!, passed away at 80, his children have decided to list his home near Los Angeles for a whopping $9.89 million ($USD 6.995 million).

According to the listing, Trebek first bought the five-bedroom, 7.5-bathroom home in 1991 for $3.04 million.

In an interesting turn of events, Trebek’s daughter Emily is the listing agent for the property, along with Renee Oigens at Compass.

Though the Trebeks have been forced to slash the price of their last home that hit the market - to the tune of $USD 200,000 ($AUD 280,000) - some experts believe they will actually sell the LA home for more than the asking price.

Real estate experts have pointed to the home’s location in LA’s Fryman Canyon, a secluded hotspot for celebrities, as well as its famed pedigree.

“We believe this home will go at or above the asking price,” Amy Herman, a licensed real estate salesperson who works with high-profile clients, told Realtor.com. “This is in part because of Alex Trebek’s legacy, and in part because of the fabled Studio City urban/suburban, super niche neighbourhood.”

Herman pointed out that the area is home to A-list celebrities such as Bruno Mars, Miley Cyrus, and George Clooney.

“Plus, a 99-year-old Mediterranean mansion on 1.5 acres is super difficult to find,” she said. “The house has an extra-special library and movie theatre, which are especially reflective of Trebek’s iconic Hollywood legacy.”

Jason Gelios, an author and real estate agent in Detroit, said the kinds of buyers attracted to celebrity homes will tend to pay a higher price.

“Celebrity properties tend to appeal to a different type of homebuyer in the luxury market,” he said. “Homebuyers who look for that celebrity touch on a property will pay the higher price.”

Though the home does require some renovating, which could see the selling price take a hit, Californian broker and real estate agent Khari Washington says it’s a reasonable price.

“There are smaller houses nearby that are fixed up and have sold in the $5 million range. With this home being more significant, the asking price is right on.”

With features including a twin wrought-iron staircase in the double-height foyer, as well as cathedral-style ceilings, uniquely designed windows, and a separate wing housing a 13-metre-long home theatre, its new owners will have a lot to enjoy.

Images: Getty Images, Realtor.com

“Almost magical”: Oprah quietly sells luxe estate for nearly $19 million

Oprah Winfrey has quietly sold one of her investment properties for a cool $US 14 million ($AUD 18.9 million).

The sale of the former talk show star’s waterfront estate on Washington’s remote Orcas Island was recorded on Tuesday and conducted off market, according to vice president of Coldwell Banker Bain’s global luxury division Jen Cameron, who represented the buyer.

“There was a rumour that the property might be for sale or the seller might consider selling it,” Ms Cameron said. “And so, with the interested party, we approached the representative to see if that was true - and that’s pretty much how it went.”

Winfrey bought the 43-acre estate known as Madroneagle in 2018, paying $US 8.3 million ($AUD 11.2 million).

The property includes a 950 square metre mansion which Winfrey has remodelled, as well as several other houses, a greenhouse, a 800-metre beach, a shop, and a mother-in-law apartment.

Windermere broker Wally Gudgell represented Winfrey in the sale, and dealt with her property manager and fitness guru Bob Greene both for the original purchase and the latest deal.

“They just figured she’s too busy and never going to really use it, and that’s why they were willing to sell it,” Mr Gudgell said.

The home also features a slew of luxury amenities, including a wet bar, wine cellar, decorative wood-fire pizza oven, and heated floors.

“There are very few properties as magnificent as this,” Ms Cameron said.

“I know what went into it - the thoughtfulness, the detail, the architecture, the quality. The home is so special in itself, but the whole property is magnificent.

“There’s a reverence in it - a place where you go to restore yourself and rejuvenate. It’s incredibly magical.

“I was really excited that somebody would have interest in really opening this property and making memories there.”

The buyer of the home is listed in property records as Lophodytes LLC, but Ms Cameron declined to comment on their identity.

Images: A.J. Why your once-in-a-lifetime trip should be to LUX

One week out from the trip of a lifetime, I’m rummaging through my parent’s bookshelf, searching for one particular photo album. It’s bulky and I’m having to peel the pages apart, probably due to the sticky hands of my younger self. I’ve always loved looking through Mum & Dad’s old travel photos, but this one trip they took is my favourite.

Two sun-kissed love birds stand on the horizon where a strip of golden sand meets a brilliant, turquoise ocean. The sea and the sky fade into one another in a smooth gradient of “has-this-been-photoshopped?” blue. On the back of the photo, in my Dad’s distinctive cursive writing, “Maldives, 1988.”

Around the time my parents visited, a tiny island called Olhahali was a famed picnic spot for those seeking a private dining experience in the Indian Ocean. Part of the North Male Atoll, the island was rimmed by pastel corals, sand bars and a flurry of brightly-coloured fish that inhabit them. The surrounds are much the same today, but the island itself has been transformed beyond belief.

Why stay at LUX* North Male?

LUX* North Male Atoll is everything I imagined the Maldives to be and more. Much more. Just from the name, you’ve probably gathered that this resort is no run-of-the-mill hotel. LUX* embodies luxury in every sense, but that’s not where the name comes from. Lux is the Latin word for light, and the asterisk represents a new philosophy – lighter, brighter.

This new approach spans from the design and decor to the way the staff interact with guests. It’s a leap away from the stuffy, over-furnished, and often heavy feel of other 5-star hotel brands. LUX* offers an exceptional, personalised experience, delivered playfully.

LUX* North Male immediately stands out from the other resorts in the Maldives. You won’t find the typical thatched roof-style villas. Instead, extravagant penthouse villas with infinity pools and private rooftop terraces await. The crisp white walls glisten in the sun, in striking contrast against the #nofilterneeded blue of the ocean. Superyacht-chic just about sums it up.

Your dining options

With just 67 villas, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were the only person on the island. Everything you need is right there in your mini-mansion so guests tend to revel in their own space. In-villa dining makes this even more fun. In the morning, you can have a spread of pastries, fruits, eggs and juices delivered and launched into your private pool. Floating breakfasts have become the hallmark of luxury tropical holidays and there’s no better place to experience it than the Maldives.

In the evening, your Island Host will create the perfect setting for a dinner under the stars. The in-villa dining menu spoils guests with a variety of seafood, steaks, Maldivian-inspired and Western cuisine. Each course is delivered on your cue with wine glasses topped up swiftly and generously.

After dinner, your private restaurant turns into an outdoor cinema. A film of your choice is projected onto the white wall and the daybed serves as the perfect spot to snuggle up and enjoy the movie. You may find your attention being drawn upward though. The sky above puts on a show of its own. The lack of light pollution allows for some of the best stargazing in the world.

The Villas

As someone who often judges a hotel by its shower, I was more than a little excited to see the bathroom. Two double doors roll away to reveal a deep stone bathtub sitting on an intricate mosaic tile floor. Behind the glass, the pane is a shower big enough to park your car in. It has three settings, two shower heads and one hell of a view to the garden (which has yet another shower).

The already magnificent bathroom is made even more magical with the finer details, particularly the toiletries. Mamma Aroma is a signature bath and skincare range, exclusive to LUX* resorts. It’s made from locally sourced ingredients with no nasties. After a day in the sun, there’s nothing better than rinsing off the salt from the ocean and slathering on the moisturiser.

Your daily schedule, sorted

If sunning yourself by the pool or swimming off your private dock gets a bit tiresome, you can try one of the island excursions. The Turtle Quest comes highly recommended. The three-hour round trip involves a boat ride out to a protected reef where marine life thrives in the warm water of the Indian Ocean. Equipped with a snorkel, flippers and a life vest (if needed), you’ll jump in and swim side-by-side with turtles, as well as a few thousand tropical fish.

If you’d prefer to stay dry, LUX* North Male Atoll has its mini-submarine that takes you out to explore the home reef. Most importantly, a sunset cruise on the island’s private yacht or a catamaran trip could be more your style. In addition, it’s also just as entertaining to park yourself on the sun lounges near Beach Rouge and watch the jet skiers whip around leaving a flurry of whitewash in their wake.

The on-site restaurant options

While you’re there, it’s only fitting to toss back a cocktail or two from the bar. Beach Rouge has a fabulous selection of cocktails but the bartenders love it when you say “surprise me.” During the day, this is where your fellow holiday-makers may be hanging out. It’s the best restaurant on the island for lunch with the resident DJ playing a mix of laid-back tunes.

For sunset though, you’ll want to head to the other side of the island. Glow overlooks a huge infinity pool with plenty of comfy lounges and dining tables. The cocktail menu is even more extensive but it’s the wine list that will blow you away. Savour the sunset and toast to another day in paradise, and as soon as the sun dips into the ocean, head upstairs for a true culinary treat.

Inti is a Peruvian-Japanese restaurant with a stellar team of chefs plating up some of the most delicious food I’ve ever eaten. There is a live sushi station sits in the middle of the room with expert knives man slicing and dicing today’s catch. Delicate decanters fill impeccably polished wine glasses and beautifully presented dishes grace the tables of hungry diners.

The ceviche is unbelievable, and the quinoa risotto comes in a close second. You can spoil yourself with a five-course feast complete with wine pairings from Alexander Van Beek’s two chateaux in Bordeaux.

To sum up, the second you arrive at LUX* North Male Atoll to when the staff wave you goodbye at the jetty, every moment is special. The experiences, restaurants and villas are all carefully thought out. You have everything you need to fulfil your dream Maldivian holiday. And with your Island Host on speed dial, you truly feel as if you’re the only person in the world.

Written by Bethany Plint. Luxe to less wine guide: cabernet sauvignon

Typically, cabernet sauvignon produces savoury medium to full-bodied dry red wines, boasting aromas of cedar and currant, with hints of mint. Australian expressions of cabernet sauvignon are more compact, with marked tannins, judicious alcohol levels and bright acidity, lifted by attractive herbaceous hints, and sometimes eucalyptus. There is no doubt, Australia produces world-class cabernet sauvignon and blends. Here we’ve compiled a luxe-to-less guide with something for every budget.

2010 Brand’s Laira One Seven One Cabernet Sauvignon, $80.50
Sourced from low-yielding vineyards planted on Coonawarra’s famous terra rossa soils, the One Seven One is a brambly and brooding cabernet sauvignon packed full of cassis and spicy cedar notes and underpinned by dried herbs. While drinking beautifully in its youth, this wine will continue to improve with careful cellaring. With 15 trophies to its name, it is one of the most awarded wines from the celebrated Coonawarra wine region and a hallmark Australian cabernet known across the world.

Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, $55.70
Created as a result of the availability of high-quality cabernet fruit, Bin 407 is inspired by its older brother, Bin 707. Not only offering varietal definition, but also approachability, structure and depth of flavour. The Bin 407 highlights the Penfolds approach to multi-region, multi-vineyard blending to create a cabernet that rewards the drinker in both early and later years.

2010 Evans and Tate Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon, $30.00
Margaret River is known for producing exceptional Cabernet wines of unique character and this wine is no exception. Displaying dark fruits, cassis, cedar wood and garden herbs, this wine is approachable now but will also reward careful cellaring.

2012 McWilliam’s Appellation Hilltops Cabernet Sauvignon, $25
The new Appellation range from McWilliam’s is really generating some buzz in the wine community, showcasing the best varietals from the emerging, cool-climate regions of NSW. This cabernet sauvignon from Hilltops shows rich dark currant fruit with autumn leaves aromas that flow nicely onto the palate supported by cedar wood spices and soft velvety tannins.

2012 McWilliam’s Hanwood Cabernet Sauvignon, $14.00
The Hanwood range is known for overdelivering and the cabernet sauvignon is particularly good value. It was recently named by the UK wine writer Matthew Jukes in his highly regarded list of the Top 100 Australian wines, which is an amazing commendation considering the price point.

Hardys Stamp of Australia Cabernet Sauvignon, $6.99
Hardys have produced an easy drinking cabernet, with attractive soft berry flavours which flow easily across the palate and gentle tannins on the finish. Bottled in the larger format 1L bottles, there's now more to go around!
