Motive and cause of death revealed after six found dead in luxury hotel

Six people found dead in a luxury hotel room in central Bangkok are believed to have died due to poisoning, according to Thai police.

Authorities shared photo of the teacups found in the room on the fifth floor of the hotel, revealing they found traces of cyanide in the cups.

The bodies of two American and four Vietnamese nationals were found by hotel staff on Tuesday evening, after staff entered the room to inform them it was past check out time.

The group, made up of three men and three women aged between 37 and 56, likely drank from tea and coffee cups laced with cyanide following a dispute linked to bad investments, Thai police said on Wednesday.

Photos of the crime scene released by authorities show a lack of struggle and violence, instead showing bodies scattered around the room among plates of untouched food, and two thermos flasks and cups.

Initial examinations revealed the presence of cyanide in six cups, according to police.

“The mouths and nails on all the bodies turned purple, showing a lack of air could be a joint reason of the cause of the death,” forensic doctor Kornkiat Vongpaisarnsin, told a press conference at the Chulalongkorn University.

“We presume they all died from cyanide which causes a lack of air in some organs,” he added.

Authorities initially said they were searching for a seventh person who was part of the hotel booking, but on Wednesday they dismissed this line of inquiry, saying they believe one of the dead people poisoned the others with the deadly fast-acting chemical cyanide.

“We are convinced that one of the six people found dead committed this crime,” said Noppasil Poonsawas, a deputy commander of Bangkok police.

That person, police said, had ordered the food and tea to the room and “looked under stress” when staff arrived.

After conducting interviews with hotel staff, Noppasin said one of the members of the group was alone in the room when the food arrived and was later joined by the other guests.

He added that the incident was likely linked to a “personal matter” and not related to organised crime as interviews carried out with relatives of the dead indicated a dispute over debt.

“One of the relatives said one of the deceased was an investment agent and all (the deceased) invested, but the business was not going as expected. They made an appointment to discuss the matter in Thailand,” Noppasin said.

Police believe that the woman who poisoned the group did so after she accrued huge debts related to an investment in a hospital in Japan, according to police sources cited by Vietnamese media.

She had allegedly convinced a married couple and two other victims among the dead to pour funds into the project, but they had reportedly lost roughly $280,000 AUD as a result.

Tran Dinh Dung, the father of one of the victims, said his 37-year-old son was due to return to Vietnam last Sunday.

“I kept calling him but couldn’t get through so I was very worried, but I didn’t expect him to die in Thailand,” Dung said in an interview with Vietnam’s Thanh Nien newspaper.

“Phu’s mother has fainted countless times, she could not bear this shock,” he said.

Six people found dead in luxury hotel

A disturbing theory has emerged after six people were found dead in a luxury hotel room in central Bangkok.

According to Bangkok’s Metropolitan Police commissioner Thiti Saengsawang, hotel staff at the Grand Hyatt Erawan discovered the bodies of six people in a fifth-floor room after they missed check out time by more than 24 hours.

After concluding that the incident did not appear to be a robbery and none of the bodies showed any signs of physical violence, Thai Police are exploring the possibility that the people were poisoned.

Police shared that they "needed to find out the motives", and that the deaths were the result of a "killing", not a suicide.

Authorities conformed they are investigating the potential poisoning after Thiti said cups with traces of a white powder were located in the room, along with untouched food that had been ordered earlier.

As police continue their investigation into the shocking deaths, they are currently searching for a seventh person who was part of the hotel booking and is now a possible suspect.

Two of the dead were US citizens of Vietnamese background, while the other four were Vietnamese nationals.

Thiti said police believe one member of the group had tried to reach the door to escape but fell and died before they could get there.

The Thai government issued a statement after the killings, with Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin saying, "There were no signs of a struggle," adding, "We need to conduct an autopsy."

He also "ordered all agencies to urgently take action to avoid impact on tourism,” given that the luxury hotel is situated in a popular tourist area.

Image credits: BBC / Royal Thai Police

Huge news for avid cruisers

Those planning to embark on a cruise can leave their masks behind, as Covid mandates on board have finally been scrapped.

NSW premier Chris Minns announced the change of rules for cruise passengers on Monday, saying, “We need to get life back to normal.”

Previously, the rules around cruising were quite strict in the face of several Covid outbreaks on ships around the world, with passengers over the age of 12 needing to provide proof of vaccination prior to embarking.

Travellers also had to abide by enforced mask-wearing when embarking and disembarking the ship, and had to present a negative Covid test prior to departure.

The NSW government announced on Monday that they had formally signed paperwork that removed the rules from the Eastern Seaboard and Western Australian Cruise Protocols, which also covers travellers embarking from Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia.

Mr Minns said it was time to “get life back to normal”.

“We have scrapped these rules because they aren’t needed anymore,” he said.

“Passengers can take their own decisions to look after their health before and during a cruise.”

Tourism Minister John Graham welcomed the change in regulations, but also thanked the government for implementing the safety rules at the height of the Covid pandemic.

“The 2023 winter cruise season in Sydney is on track to be one of the strongest on record and it is fantastic even more people can now participate,” he said.

“These protocols were important after Covid but were not intended to continue in perpetuity and I thank the sector for how they have handled the additional requirements placed upon them.”

While the remaining states have yet to formally rescind the rules, the federal health body has advocated for the removal of the Covid public health measures.

The future of travel is looking bright … and feeling luxurious

A new report from Luxury Gold, experts in the realm of boutique luxury travel experiences, has shed some insight into what hopeful holidaymakers can expect to find on their next once-in-a-lifetime trip.

Whether your interests lie in unique experiences you can brag about at every dinner party for the rest of your life, taking home a special piece of your dream getaway as your own personal treasure, or exploring locations most could only ever dream of setting foot in, Luxury Gold have you covered.

And while some may be a little unsure at the prospect of luxury travel during a cost of living crunch, Luxury Gold have actually reported a 150% increase in bookings since 2022, and expect almost one in six Australians over 18 to spend $10,000 on their next big break.

With that in mind, it has never been more important to know exactly what you want to get out of your holiday - and where to find it. Luckily for us all, Luxury Gold are experts in the field of Luxury Small Group Journeys, and are on a mission to redefine the idea of the New Golden Age of Travel.

As managing director Toni Ambler explained, “a holiday is more than ‘just a holiday’ for modern luxury consumers, especially post-pandemic. Instead, it’s an opportunity to grow, learn and soak in experiences that will change us for the better. It’s travel that’s more purposeful and curated, as opposed to ‘in-and-out’ or flash-in-the-pan holidays.

“Our customer base has always expected to have one-of-a-kind experiences on their trip. ‘The New Golden Age of Travel’ report underscores this notion, but also shows that we’re seeing a return to this nostalgic essence of what travel used to be in the golden age, where consumers crave curated experiences, souvenirs that matter, and activities that expand our minds.”

And when it comes to those curated experiences, Luxury Gold have noted that consumers aren’t just looking to spend their money on flights and a destination before calling it a day, in a trend they’ve named ‘Touring on Top’.

Instead, they want an experience out of it all - one unique to where they’re visiting, and one that ticks every box they could ever want to fill, with a trip and itinerary designed specifically for them and their interests - even the most niche of the bunch.

“Post-pandemic, we've seen a lot of change in the way Australians travel and why they are travelling. The rise of the travel advisor is key to this, as clients want end-to-end experiences and touring is the perfect example,” Global Brand and Marketing Director for Luxury Travel Associates Anna Burgdorf said.

“Instead of booking flights, accommodation and activities on their own, more and more Australians want this process to be seamlessly managed and that means finding a trusted advisor that can undertake this process of collaboration with them … booking a tour simply takes the guesswork and stress out of the booking process.

“Whether visiting Travel Associates or speaking with a travel agent, these experts work closely with the customer to understand their unique needs and custom build a package tour that works for them.”

Essentially, people want human service, and they want someone who’s going to understand - and respect - every last bit of their holiday desires through the entire planning process.

American Express have reported that 59% of people would like to work with a travel agent to get the personalised trip of their dreams, while GWI have found that 77% of luxury travellers would rather spend on an experience - or products for one - that comes hand in hand with a sense of community.

A rise has occurred in the number of community-oriented trips taking place in the travel sector - with those seeking both the community experience of those they’re taking with them, and those they’re meeting along the way - as people realise what it is that’s important in life, turning their attention to experience, and not only things.

However, it can be hard to come home from any trip - especially when it’s not just the trip of a lifetime, but also one entirely for you.

That’s why it can make all the difference to bring a little piece of it with you, especially as travellers are searching for those crucial tangible experiences - or, as Luxury Gold have found, ‘Tangible Nostalgia’.

As Toni Ambler explained, holidaymakers used to be able to show off their passports and the various stamps they’d collected within, boasting of their adventures with some proof over where they’d explored in their journey across the world.

But now, trends suggest that it’s less is actually more, with Toni noting that “it’s more about the quality and unique experiences we’ve had over volume.”

Additionally, people don’t just want something to pop on their shelf and forget about, instead reaching for something that evokes the same feeling as the passport boasts, or throws them right back into a moment from their trip, bringing memories to the forefront every time they’re around their treasured keepsake.

For example, The Maker Hotel have released perfumes designed to remind visitors of their time living it up away from home - scents that will keep the good times coming, and won’t see those souvenir funds going to waste.

TravelPulse have also revealed that music plays a major part in the travel experience, too. So the next time you’re overseas - or even exploring what’s on offer at home - make sure to compile your very own playlist, so the sounds of your experience will never be far from your ears.

And as Planet 9 Private Air believe, remaining true to your destination has never mattered more to travellers, as “from the locavore culinary trend to a focus on locally made crafts and artwork, the luxury travel industry is discovering its preference for high-end goods and services sourced from the destinations they represent.”

To read the full report and learn more about Luxury Gold’s six travel trends, visit luxurygold.com/en-au/travel-trends-report.

Images: Luxury Gold [supplied]

Please go to GUESS on Regent Street.”

“They’ve helped themselves to my artwork without asking, how can it be wrong for you to do the same to their clothes?” he told his 11.5 million followers.

The Guess display, which showcased their capsule collection called Brandalised, features several of Banksy’s works, which he claims were used without his authorisation.

The clothing company’s official announcement for the capsule collection used the word “inspired” and said the items were produced in partnership with Brandalised, an urban graffiti license “whose mission is to offer Banksy fans affordable graffiti collectibles.”

“The graffiti of Bansky has had a phenomenal influence that resonates throughout popular culture,” Guess Chief Creative Officer Paul Marciano said in the press release.

“This new capsule collection with Brandalised is a way for fashion to show its gratitude.”

After Banksy posted the message on Instagram, the BBC reported that Guess closed the store, put security outside, and covered the window display.

Image credits: Instagram / Getty Images

Named after President Reagan, a personal friend of the former owner, the split-level suite is located in the oldest wing of the Irish castle and boasts an original fireplace, an antique George III-style four-poster bed, and original portrait art. It’s easy to pretend you’re a member of the royal family with 24-hour housekeeping, a complimentary bar, and a gift delivered daily.

The Beverly Hilton in Los Angeles

The Presidential Suite at The Beverly Hilton is “presidential” in every sense of the word. “What a joke!” Outrage over luxury chocolate advent calendar’s price tag

Chocolate advent calendars are a staple in many households to countdown to Christmas in the most delicious way.

However, one boutique chocolatier has taken this humble tradition to the next level.

Haigh’s Chocolates recently announced their annual Luxury Advent Calendar, with one aspect of the edible countdown causing a stir online.

The indulgent calendar comes with 24 doors, giving customers a chocolatey treat each day of December, but also boasts a ridiculously hefty price tag.

The Luxury Advent Calendar is available now for pre-order (until November 11th) for $1,190.

Haigh's wants customers to "celebrate the magic of the festive season" and enjoy the countdown to Christmas in the "most delicious way" - but unfortunately, that will come at a huge cost for Aussies.

Many Australians have been outraged over the cost, taking to online spaces to vent their frustrations, claiming why the huge price of the calendar is not sending the right Christmas spirit messaging.

"We have homeless. We have people struggling to buy food. Kids going to school without breakfast. And then this extravagance. All on our doorstep. Just doesn't seem right. Sure, if you can afford it, buy it. Or you could buy 6 weeks of meals for someone struggling and really embrace the Christmas spirit," one customer fumed on social media.

"Haha wow $1200 for chocolate? That's gotta be really good chocolate. I don't think so, better things to spend $1200 on," another outraged shopper added.

Others accused the company of not reading the room at a time when Aussies were struggling with the rise in cost of living.

"We can tee this up with a $70 Lobster roll from the pop-up food cart in Rundle Mall. Middle class is disappearing, the gap is widening, you are either in the minority and getting richer, or becoming more povvo like the majority," one person shared.

Another agreed, saying, "What a joke! most Australians are doing it so tuff! Anyone who buys this needs their head read! Even if I was a millionaire I would not pay this for chocolate. If I had that spare for chocolate I would rather donate to someone who really needs it!"

Meanwhile, there were a few people who were keen on the luxury chocolate, regardless of the cost.

"I would like this advent calendar thanks," one person shared.

"I’m worth it!" added another.

"I'll be disappointed if I don’t wake up to this on the 1st of December."

"I seriously doubt it was consensual": Creepy find inside luxury estate

A photographer has come across something quite sinister during a photoshoot of a multi-million dollar luxury estate.

Taking to Facebook, the photographer shared photos of a two-way mirror in the master bathroom of the home along with some cables and coax.

He thought it would have led him to a television as some people like to watch shows while enjoying a bath but it just left him with so many questions.

"Technically found in a closet, but a two-way mirror into a bathroom," the photographer wrote.

"I work in real estate photography and found this in the master bath of an older multi-million-dollar luxury estate for sale.

“There is a power strip along with cables and coax.

"It was easy to find, leading me to believe it was for a television (that was a thing) or if it were for video, it was consensual between all parties. Still really weird to find!"

Social media users were shocked at the finding and doubted that the cables were there for a TV but instead for something possibly worse.

"I SERIOUSLY DOUBT it was consensual if someone was filming there. If it was for a TV in a mirror I think I'd have left the TV THERE to prove what it was for!" someone wrote.

"That was for no TV with a mirror in front of it. And why not just a window if consensual? I don't think this was consensual at all and I find it terrifying!" another commented.

"That's a murder house," someone else wrote.

Later in the post, the photographer explained that these findings were quite common in expensive homes.

"Luxury homes had two-way mirror TVs. It was a thing back when box TVs were a thing," he explained.

Others agreed, giving examples of when they were in the same situation.

"Someone told me they had a TV in the mirror of her hotel bathroom," one wrote.

"I stayed in a fancy hotel in Chicago with a TV behind the mirror. It was pretty cool,” another shared.

"More than 5 years ago, it was 'in' for homes to have a TV hidden inside a mirror. I actually know a handful of friends that had 'hidden' TVs in their master bath," someone else added.

Images: Facebook

Ten grand to even take a LOOK inside Melissa Caddick’s home

The luxury home belonging to alleged fraudster Melissa Caddick is up for sale, but prospective buyers will need to fork out a $10,000 deposit to view the property.

Ms Caddick is believed to have died after disappearing from the home in Sydney’s eastern suburbs in 2020, shortly after it was raided as part of an investigation by the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC).

The Dover Heights home has been listed by auction house Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty.

Liquidator Bruce Gleeson said he was hopeful that its sale would make a major contribution to paying the $23 million sum Ms Caddick allegedly stole from 72 victims of a Ponzi scheme.

"Since obtaining vacant possession in late May 2022 and receiving orders enabling us to proceed with a sale, we have undertaken certain maintenance and minor improvements to amplify the property's luxurious appeal," Mr Gleeson said.

Ms Caddick bought the home in 2014 for $6.2 million, with a recent estimate from Mr Gleeson’s firm valuing it at more than $10 million.

Sydney Sotheby’s has made the $10,000 refundable ‘entry fee’ a requirement to deter nosy neighbours and those following the ongoing inquest into Ms Caddick’s disappearance.

The strategy seems to have worked so far, as Sotheby’s estate agent Michael Pallier said prospective buyers had already booked in to pay the deposit within hours of the house being listed.

Errol Diamond, Ms Caddick’s former next-door neighbour, told the ABC that the refundable deposit will help distinguish interested buyers from those having a snoop, and that he was interested in seeing it himself.

"I think we will pay to have a look at it. Stunning view. I think we'll go for it," he said.

"I think [the refundable $10,000 deposit] will be the difference between genuine buyers and sticky beakers."

The five-bedroom, three-bathroom home won’t be the last of Ms Caddick’s belongings to be auctioned either.

"We are also well advanced and close to finalising an application to the Federal Court which will seek sale orders regarding the designer jewellery, clothing, and artworks," Mr Gleeson said.

"It is our intention to have an investor briefing to provide a detailed update on the Receivership and Liquidation status in late October 2022."

Images: Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty
