Couple's heartfelt plea after both losing their right legs

A Perth couple who both lost their right legs in a horrific motorbike crash have opened up about their long, painful road to recovery – and the staggering new challenges they now face.

Dean and Sharon English, both seasoned motorcyclists, were enjoying a ride through WA’s Wheatbelt in September when tragedy struck. As they rounded a bend on Great Eastern Highway near Meckering, about 130km east of Perth, their bike collided with an oncoming vehicle towing a caravan. Dean had been riding, with Sharon on the back.

The collision was so severe that both were airlifted to Royal Perth Hospital in critical condition. Placed in induced comas and undergoing multiple surgeries, the couple awoke to find they had both lost their right legs, Dean’s amputated at the hip, and Sharon’s below the knee.

Their bodies broken and their lives changed forever, the couple spent nearly five months recovering side by side in hospital.

“Some days it’s really, really difficult,” Dean told 7NEWS. “We have our private moments where we sit there and have a cry. If I didn’t have Sharon with me, I’d be absolutely wrecked.”

Their fight to rebuild their lives is now twofold: physical recovery and financial survival. While Sharon, as a passenger, qualifies for third-party compensation, Dean does not. Despite 33 years of service as a prison officer, he had no private health insurance and now faces the daunting task of proving he wasn’t at fault to receive any support from the Insurance Commission.

To do that, he’ll need to pay tens of thousands of dollars for a private investigator – money the couple simply doesn’t have, especially now that Dean’s paid leave has run out and he’s on leave without pay.

As Dean continues intense rehab at Fiona Stanley Hospital, trying to learn to walk again on a prosthetic while coping with a shattered hand and missing finger, Sharon has returned home in a wheelchair. She too hopes to one day walk again with a prosthetic, though doctors warn she may require further surgery first.

Despite everything, their gratitude and determination remain remarkable. On their GoFundMe page – which has raised nearly $45,000 – they shared a heartfelt message: “We would like to thank each and every one of you for your support and generosity. It is a very humbling experience and we truly thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Dean also praised his long-time workplace, revealing the prison commissioner has promised him a job when he’s well enough to return.

“I want to get back to normal,” he said. “This isn’t normal. It’s not what I was like.”

The couple are using their experience to warn others about road safety. Dean urged all riders to wear proper protective equipment, which he believes saved their lives. “We wear the best of equipment all the time, and I would urge anyone who rides a motorbike to make sure they wear proper PPE,” he said.

WA’s road toll is at a decade high, and for Dean and Sharon, the cost is deeply personal. But in the face of unimaginable loss, they are refusing to give up – leaning on each other, on the kindness of strangers and on hope for a future where “normal” may look different, but is still within reach.

Images: GoFundMe

Delta Goodrem marries in secret ceremony

music star Delta Goodrem has tied the knot with her longtime love, Matthew Copley, in a magical and intimate wedding on the picturesque island of Malta.

The beloved singer, 40, and her guitarist partner, 38, reportedly exchanged vows on June 16 in front of close family and friends. Among the guests were some familiar faces, including Goodrem’s best friend Renee Bargh, Nine’s entertainment reporter Richard Wilkins and his son Christian, as well as Delta’s mum Lea and brother Trent.

The ceremony, described as star-studded yet deeply personal, took place at a location that holds special meaning for the couple. Malta was where Copley proposed in 2023 during a holiday that doubled as a family visit – and now, the idyllic European island is where they’ve officially begun married life together.

In true Delta and Matthew style, the couple have so far kept the happy news off their social media accounts, choosing to celebrate privately rather than in the spotlight. It’s a decision that reflects their approach to their relationship, which Goodrem has described as grounded in “respect and love”.

The pair, who have been together since 2017, are more than just romantic partners – they’re also creative collaborators. Copley, a talented musician in his own right, is a member of Goodrem’s band, and fans have long admired the chemistry the two share on stage.

Back when they announced their engagement, Goodrem delighted followers with a simple but heartfelt post: “My best friend asked me to marry him.” Speaking later on the Something To Talk About podcast, the singer revealed that their European tour at the time turned into a kind of rolling engagement celebration: “It was beautiful – because it felt like we’d done an engagement party in every single city.”

Goodrem, who has had several high-profile relationships in the past, has made a conscious choice in recent years to keep her love life out of the headlines. “I made a choice that I’m not even going to comment ‘yes’ or ‘no’ … I’ve said nothing for three or four years,” she shared in an earlier interview.

What has always been clear is the depth of her connection with Copley. “He’s my best friend, he’s kind and just a beautiful human being. I’m very lucky. It’s all very natural and I think that comes from a beautiful respect and love. I feel so grateful,” Goodrem has said.

Fans around the world will no doubt be overjoyed at the news and wish the happy couple a lifetime of love, music and adventure.

Images: Instagram

Aussie couple set to give away $3.5 billion

Billionaire Canva co-founder Cameron Adams and his wife Lisa Miller have pledged to give away at least half of their estimated $7 billion fortune, calling on Australia’s wealthiest to follow suit in the fight against environmental degradation.

The philanthropic commitment will see the couple funnel significant resources into green initiatives via The Giving Pledge and Founders Pledge – two global efforts that encourage billionaires and entrepreneurs to donate a substantial portion of their wealth to impactful causes.

“Nature nourishes us, sustains us, inspires us and shapes how we live,” Mr Adams wrote in his letter to The Giving Pledge, the global charity initiative co-founded by Warren Buffett and Bill and Melinda Gates. “But today, many of the ecosystems that support our lives are being destroyed – and our future depends on how we choose to save them.”

Adams, who co-founded the homegrown tech success Canva in 2013, and Miller, a former zoologist turned entrepreneur, say their focus will be on reversing biodiversity loss and restoring natural ecosystems, which they see as critical to the survival of life on Earth.

“Philanthropy is more than charity; it is a means of addressing systemic issues, driving meaningful change and ensuring that future generations inherit a world rich in possibility and biodiversity,” Mr Adams said.

The couple’s wealth is largely tied up in Canva equity, with the company currently valued at around AU$49.5 billion (US$32 billion) and reportedly considering a NASDAQ listing in 2026. Canva’s other co-founders, Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht, joined The Giving Pledge in 2021.

The new pledge by Adams and Miller follows earlier environmental commitments by the couple, including the establishment of Wedgetail Ventures, an eco-investment fund backing conservation projects and local communities. They also own a 5000-hectare property in Tasmania, now being developed into a conservation research centre in partnership with the University of Tasmania.

“In recent years, we have grown in our confidence that these are issues worth fighting for, and that we can make a unique contribution with the funds and skills that we have,” Mr Adams said.

Lisa Miller echoed the sentiment in joint statements, underscoring the importance of bold, scalable efforts in the environmental space. “We must not only halt nature’s decline but also begin its restoration,” she said.

Through Founders Pledge, the couple joins a growing network of tech entrepreneurs including Spotify’s Magnus Hult, Culture Amp’s Jon Williams, and Klarna’s Niklas Adalberth. The organisation has attracted over 2,000 members across 45 countries, with more than US$1.5 billion (AU$2.3 billion) already donated from pledged funds.

“Entrepreneurs are uniquely placed to transform the world,” Founders Pledge states. “We advise on, facilitate and maximise the impact of our members’ giving.”

The Adams-Miller announcement adds to a growing number of high-profile philanthropic moves by Australian billionaires. Mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest and his former wife Nicola were among the first Australians to sign on to The Giving Pledge back in 2013.

“As a family, we agreed many years ago to give away the majority of our wealth,” the Forrests said at the time. “We felt that if our children were to inherit considerable wealth, it would only get in the way of them striving for and achieving their best.”

Adams hopes his and Miller’s decision will spark a wider cultural shift among Australia’s wealthiest. “We hope others will recognise the power of philanthropy to create lasting environmental and societal impact by joining us in this commitment,” he said.

Image: Wedgetail

Friends shared that the couple was eager to exchange vows before welcoming their new addition later this year.

“This is a huge year for Tiger Lily and Ben,” a source added. “Getting married in front of their nearest and dearest was the cherry on top for them.”

Despite growing up in the shadow of tragedy – having lost both her parents at a young age and her sister Peaches in 2014 – Tiger Lily has carved a life of quiet creativity. After spending time here in Australia, where she released her debut album "Tragic Tiger’s Sad Meltdown", she returned to London and now lives with Ben, a model.

Reflecting on her musical journey, Tiger Lily once said, “Most of the songs are about my sister, Peaches, who I lost as a teenager... but my band always made me feel held.”

Now, with love, music and a growing family at her side, it seems Tiger Lily Hutchence has found her own harmony – and her happily ever after.

Images: Instagram

"Devastated": Brisbane IVF recipient gives birth to another couple's baby

A woman has given birth to another couple’s child after a critical error at a Brisbane fertility clinic resulted in the wrong embryo being transferred during treatment.

Monash IVF, a leading fertility provider operating across Australia, has issued an apology following the distressing incident, which occurred at one of its clinics in Brisbane. The mistake came to light in February when the biological parents of the child requested their remaining embryos be transferred to a different IVF provider.

“Instead of finding the expected number of embryos, an additional embryo remained in storage for the birth parents,” Monash IVF revealed in a statement. An investigation confirmed that an embryo from another patient had been mistakenly thawed and implanted in the woman, resulting in her giving birth to a child who is genetically unrelated to her.

Monash IVF attributed the error to human mistake and said the affected parents were informed of the situation within a week of its discovery.

Michael Knaap, the chief executive of Monash IVF, expressed deep regret over the incident. “All of us at Monash IVF are devastated and we apologise to everyone involved,” he said. “We have undertaken additional audits and we’re confident that this is an isolated incident.”

To ensure accountability and transparency, the fertility provider has appointed Victorian Senior Counsel Fiona McLeod to conduct an independent investigation. Monash IVF has pledged to fully implement any recommendations arising from the review.

The case has also been reported to the Reproductive Technology Accreditation Committee, Queensland's assisted reproductive technology regulator.

This is not the first controversy faced by Monash IVF. In August last year, the group agreed to a $56 million settlement with more than 700 former patients after allegations it destroyed healthy embryos due to faulty genetic screening. A class action claimed that around 35 per cent of embryos classified as abnormal were, in fact, viable. Although Monash IVF settled the case through mediation, it did not admit to any wrongdoing.

Images: Today / Shutterstock

Tragedy on first cruise: Aussie couple’s dream trip ends in heartbreak

What began as a dream getaway for Aussie couple Glenn and Beverley Stein has ended in devastating tragedy, after Glenn, 74, died suddenly during their very first cruise.

Described as "humble and hardworking", the couple had never been overseas or on a cruise before. Their four-day voyage from Brisbane to Airlie Beach, a generous gift from their son after a lucky windfall, was meant to be a long-overdue escape for the pair, who had spent more than 50 years side by side.

"They had never been on a cruise before, never even been overseas," daughter-in-law Sarah shared with Yahoo News. "One of their sons won some money so he thought it might be nice to buy them a cruise."

According to Sarah, the couple were thoroughly enjoying their time onboard. But just a few days into the trip, Glenn began to feel unwell, suspecting it was merely “a bit of food poisoning”. True to their no-fuss nature, the Steins tried not to worry and went to bed, assuming he would feel better by morning.

Tragically, Beverley awoke the next day to find Glenn unconscious. In shock, she raised the alarm with the ship’s housekeeping staff, who immediately called the onboard medical team. “The staff were amazing. We’ve got a 43-page report detailing all the care they gave him," Sarah said, commending the cruise medical team for their efforts and support during the ordeal.

Glenn’s condition rapidly deteriorated. Doctors soon discovered he was suffering from a life-threatening strangulated hernia, requiring emergency surgery. As they awaited an airlift to Bundaberg Hospital, the crew urged Beverley to speak with her husband and prepare for the worst.

Even aboard the emergency helicopter, Glenn’s health continued to fail. Once at the hospital, paramedics warned the couple’s children, already en route, to call in immediately.

“They managed to speak to Glenn, which was really nice,” Sarah said. Heartbreakingly, just minutes later, when Sarah and her husband tried to call, they were told Glenn had passed away. "He had literally just passed away as soon as they got off the phone."

Adding to the family's anguish, they soon discovered that because Glenn and Beverley had unknowingly crossed into international waters, and hadn't purchased travel insurance, Beverley was left facing an $8,500 medical bill.

“This was their first cruise; they didn’t realise it was actually out of Australian waters,” Sarah explained, calling the experience a “cautionary tale” for other travellers. While understanding of the fees, the family is now hoping the cruise company might show some compassion and reduce the amount.

Loved ones have launched a GoFundMe to help cover the medical costs and funeral expenses. "Bev is not only grieving the loss of her life partner but is now also facing overwhelming financial pressure," the family wrote. "Any contribution, no matter how small, will go directly toward covering the significant costs associated with Glenn’s passing and supporting Bev as she begins to navigate life without him."

Despite their grief, the family has found bittersweet moments of humour in the aftermath. “It’s really funny,” Sarah recalled, “his daughter mentioned, ‘Dad always said he never wanted a fuss and just wanted to go quietly,’ and it’s ended up being a helicopter out and on the news – so he couldn’t have been more dramatic."

As they rally around Beverley, the Steins’ loved ones hope their story will serve as a reminder of the importance of travel insurance — and of cherishing every moment with the ones you love.

Images: GoFundMe

Young couple sold almost everything to live on a cruise ship

Two savvy US school teachers Monica Brzoska, 32, and Jorrell Conley, 36, have sold almost all of their possessions to live at sea.

The couple fell in love with cruising after travelling to Mexico, Belize and Grand Cayman almost a decade ago.

In 2023, after Monica's father fell ill, she was inspired to live the life she had always wanted.

"Don’t wait for retirement to follow your dreams. Do it now," her mother had told her.

That's when she and her husband made the life-changing decision.

“Instead of coming back, why not keep booking consecutive cruises for as long as we could afford to?” Monica told The Sun.

“It sounds mad, but the numbers made sense. Accommodation, food and entertainment would be included – we’d only need spending money.

“And because we’d been on so many Carnival cruises, we’d earned access to some amazing offers.

“If we chose the cheapest cabins, our savings from the pandemic would allow us to book eight months of cruising for $16,000 – some trips paid for in full, others with deposits.

“We could then use the rent from our three-bedroom house in Memphis to make extra payments as needed. Many cruises start and end in the same ports, so we knew we’d be able to disembark and easily board our next ship, or otherwise fly to the port.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Monica Brzoska (@life_by_any_means)

The pair quit their jobs, sold most of their possessions and rented out their three-bedroom home in Memphis, and have been cruising for almost two years now.

Since making the move, the couple have completed 36 consecutive cruises and visited almost 50 countries.

“I instantly felt free,” she said.

“People are amazed when they hear we live on ships, and I’m always happy to share the tricks we’ve learned to save money. Couple forced to sit next to dead passenger on international flight

A couple has recalled the distressing moment they were forced to sit next to a dead passenger on an international flight.

Mitchell Ring and Jennifer Colin were en route from Melbourne to Venice with Qatar Airlines, via the city of Doha, when a female passenger died mid-flight.

The crew decided to put the dead passenger's body in Ring and Colin's row for the remaining four hours of the flight, which the couple said left them traumatised.

The incident unfolded when a woman walked out of the bathroom and collapsed next to their row.

"Unfortunately the lady couldn't be saved, which was pretty heartbreaking to watch," Ring told A Current Affair.

"They tried to wheel her up towards business class, but she was quite a large lady and they couldn't get her through the aisle."

"They looked a bit frustrated, then they just looked at me and saw seats were available beside me, my wife was on the other side, we were in a row of four."

"They said, 'Can you move over please?' and I just said, 'Yes no problem'. Then they placed the lady in the chair I was in."

The couple claims cabin crew did not offer them a different seat to move to, with a passenger in the row behind them instead offering a spare seat to nervous-flyer Colin.

"There were a few spare seats I could see around us," Ring said.

Ring spent the remaining hours of the flight in the same row as the corpse, saying he was told to stay seated after the plane landed as medical crews took off blankets covering the body.

"I can't believe they told us to stay … it wasn't nice," he said.

The couple said they have not been offered any support from Qatar Airways, with Ring saying, "They have a duty of care towards their customers as well as their staff, we should be contacted to make sure, do you need some support, do you need some counselling."

"I don't really know how I feel and would like to speak to somebody to make sure I'm alright."

Colin said the pair was now trying to make the best of their Italian holiday of a lifetime after the disturbing flight.

"I'm trying to make the best of a pretty hard situation, but, you know, we're on holidays so we're really trying to have a good time," she said.

Since A Current Affair spoke to the couple, Qatar Airways says it is looking into the situation.

More than 100 people duped in FB scam at Queensland couple's home

Leah and Gerard thought they had the perfect home. Peaceful neighbourhood, quiet street – until they were unwittingly transformed into the hottest discount superstore on Facebook Marketplace.

The problem? They weren’t selling anything.

“No idea why it’s happened to us,” Gerard told Nine News, still baffled by how their address became ground zero for a digital yard sale they never signed up for.

It all began with a single, seemingly innocent knock at the door. A woman, hopeful and cash in hand, arrived to claim a bicycle she had “purchased” online. Leah and Gerard, unaware of their new status as involuntary retail moguls, had to break the news.

But the knocks kept coming. And coming. And coming.

“We had more than 100 people show up to our home looking for items that we supposedly had for sale, that we did not,” Leah said.

From TVs to mattresses to outdoor furniture, their house was now the delivery hub of a scammer’s wildest dreams. If only Leah and Gerard had actually been running a secondhand store – they might have made a fortune.

It wasn’t just a daytime ordeal either. These determined bargain hunters weren’t about to let something like the absence of an actual seller stop them.

“They would arrive anywhere from 7:30 in the morning, right through until 10-10:30 at night,” Leah said.

Some shoppers had even paid deposits in advance, while others went the extra mile – hiring Airtaskers to pick up non-existent goods.

“So not good,” Gerard added, in what is arguably the understatement of the year.

According to cyber support group ID Care, this isn’t an isolated incident. Scammers are increasingly using real addresses to make their fake listings seem legitimate. It’s an ingenious, if completely infuriating, tactic.

“We find with many of the victims that are giving money, they’re also giving away scanned copies of their driver’s licence for example,” ID Care chief executive Dave Lacey said.

And with identity theft a real concern, it turns out a too-good-to-be-true deal might end up costing you far more than just a missing couch.

Leah and Gerard eventually took matters into their own hands, erecting a warning sign in their driveway to spare themselves from yet another disappointed customer.

Their makeshift security checkpoint seemed to work, finally deterring the flood of hopeful buyers. Meanwhile, their local MP stepped in to get Meta to remove the scammer’s listing – presumably after realising that Facebook Marketplace doesn’t come with a customer service hotline.

For Marketplace shoppers, the lesson is clear: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. If the seller doesn’t have a real profile or their photos look like they came from a stock image catalogue, proceed with caution. And, of course, always double-check the pickup address before showing up at a random couple’s doorstep demanding a TV!

After all, Leah and Gerard have been through enough. “We’re just thankful that it’s stopped,” Gerard said. And somewhere in Queensland, a fake seller is already on the lookout for their next unsuspecting “storefront”.

Images: Nine News

Weet-Bix weighs in on married couple's "un-Australian" debate

A husband and wife have gone viral on social media for their differing views on stacking Weet-Bix, with the breakfast cereal company chiming in to settle their debate.

The argument erupted on Reddit after a man asked users to "Help me settle an argument between my wife and me" over how they prepared their Weet-Bix in the morning.

“How do you eat yours? I put my Weet-Bix vertically, which optimises each biscuit’s access to milk, ensuring a more balanced texture across the dish. She likes hers flat. Thoughts?”

The man attached a photo of both ways side-by-side. In the first bowl, four Weet-Bix biscuits are placed vertically, while in the second, they’re stacked flat.

Within hours, thousands of comments poured in on the divisive post and the consensus was clear: eating them vertically is “un-Australian”.

“I’ve never heard of that,” one user wrote. “I denounce it as heresy and witchcraft.”

“I didn’t know there was any other way to eat them other than flat,” chimed in another.

“Who are these people eating their Weet-Bix vertically and walking around acting like normal citizens?” joked someone else.

However, a few brave souls defended the vertical method, saying they could see the benefits, such as keeping the biscuits “crisper” for longer and allowing more to fit in the bowl.

To settle the debate, Sarah Smyth, Weet-Bix Brand Manager at Sanitarium chimed in, telling news.com.au that the Aussie breakfast staple is to be enjoyed however you want.

“We’ve been doing our Weet-Bix daily for nearly 100 years, and there’s no right or wrong way,” she told the news outlet.

“Vertical, flat, whole, crumbled, soaked or plain, we just love how the humble Weet-Bix is the perfect base to inspire a master breakfast chef in any generation."

“From savoury to the strangest of sweet toppings, to smoothies, slices, veggie balls, and even crumbled on a salad for extra crunch, we’ve heard it all over the years!”

"Thank god you're here": Couple rescued after 3-day ordeal

A couple in their 50s have been rescued after spending days stranded in Queensland.

The couple and their two dogs were stuck for three days in the remote Gulf of Carpentaria, north-west of Staaten River National Park, after getting swept away in flood waters.

It is believed their 4WD was overcome by a large wave at a river crossing, when they managed to escape the vehicle through the passenger side window and make it to shore.

The man then swam back into croc-infested waters to free their two dogs.

The couple and their animals then had to battle no reception and no food for three days, drinking water from the river to get them through.

They scrawled "SOS" in the sand, with the distress message eventually being seen by a LifeFlight helicopter from the air.

They were airlifted to hospital and treated for dehydration and exposure, alongside their two dogs.

It was experienced New Zealand pilot Michael Adair's first week working at LifeFlight and he said the couple had lost hope they would be rescued.

"They said, 'Thank god you're here, we didn't think anyone was coming,'" he told the ABC.

"The wife had told us she had been hearing voices in the bush from exposure and had convinced herself that nobody was coming to help them, so she was very emotional when we hugged her."

He added that the couple were in good spirits when the helicopter arrived.

"These people had resigned themselves to dying and seeing the look on their faces when they saw us and realised they weren't going to die — that's the reason we do this," he said.

"They were very happy and jovial to see us and then the reality of the fact that hey … they're about to be rescued — that's when the emotion welled up."

Elderly couple's pension predicament sparks heated debate

An elderly couple have sparked a heated debate online after enquiring how they can hold on to their pension payments despite their increasing wealth.

The couple are in their 90s and receive a part-age pension payment, while also owning a share portfolio worth around $895,000.

In a question to Sydney Morning Herald money columnist, Noel Whittaker, the couple’s child asked: “With the market going up as it has, they are worried that they will lose their pension and the benefits. Is there anything that they can do so they don’t lose the pension?”

You must be 67 years or older to be eligible for the pension in Australia, with the maximum fortnightly payment for a single person is $1,144.40 and $1,725.20 for a couple.

However, the pension amount is reduced by 50 cents for every dollar over $212 a person receives in income per fortnight.

A couple who are homeowners on a full pension can have $470,000 in combined assets before their pensions are impacted, while a couple who are homeowners on a part pension can have $1,045,500 in assets before their payments are cancelled.

Whittaker recommended for the couple to get their furniture valued at “garage sale prices”, rather than replacement prices to keep their assets below the threshold.

He also suggested renovating their home, prepaying for their funerals, or making a gift of $10,000.

“If they gave a bigger sum of money to the children now, their pension would not be reduced as it would be held as a deprived asset for five years but would not increase in value,” the columnist suggested.

The article was quickly posted online, and the couple were met with fierce backlash as one person wrote on X, "Why are 90yo millionaires worried about losing a welfare payment?” while another person joked, “If I go to work and earn money how can I do it and still keep my Centrelink payments please inform me!”

Many branded the couple “greedy”, claiming they had more than enough to live on for the rest of their retirement, with one person writing, “Firstly, stop being so greedy. Secondly, live off your money. Ffs.”

“I read that this morning, and was shocked at how greedy some people are. $900,000 is more than enough for anyone to live off during their retirement years,” another said.

Others suspected it was the child who was concerned, rather than the parents, commenting, “It sounds like it’s the kids worrying they might have to spend their inheritance.”
