Mother accused of murdering daughter dies in hospital

An already deeply tragic case has taken a further heartbreaking turn with the death of a woman charged with the murder of her three-year-old daughter.

Lauren Ingrid Flanigan, 32, was found unresponsive in her cell at the Brisbane Women’s Correctional Centre on Friday night. Despite being rushed to hospital, she died from her injuries overnight, Queensland Corrective Services confirmed.

Flanigan had been in custody since last Monday, when she was arrested in the front yard of her Bundaberg home. Police were called to the property after reports of a seriously injured child. Her daughter, Sophia Rose, was found with multiple wounds and died at the scene despite desperate efforts to save her.

The devastating loss of Sophia had already shocked the community. Now, just days later, Flanigan’s sudden death has left many struggling to make sense of the unfolding tragedy.

“Queensland Corrective Services officers provided immediate assistance before paramedics transported the woman to hospital, where she died last night, June 1,” a QCS spokesperson said. “Support is being offered to the responding officers and their colleagues.”

Police have confirmed that the Corrective Services Investigation Unit (CSIU) is examining the circumstances of Flanigan’s death, and a report will be prepared for the Coroner.

Flanigan had not entered a plea and was scheduled to appear in court in July. Her death now leaves many unanswered questions, while intensifying the sorrow surrounding an already harrowing case.

Sophia’s father, Jai Ruane, a FIFO worker at a Central Queensland coal mine, was not home at the time of the incident. He has since returned and is caring for his two other children.

Speaking to 9NEWS, Ruane shared memories of his “bubbly” little girl, who he described as the “light” of his life. “She was always smiling, always wanting to help, just so full of life and love. She just had such a huge heart,” he said.

If you need help in a crisis, call Lifeline on 13 11 14. Woman accused of murdering terminally ill partner hours after palliative care meeting

A woman accused of killing her terminally ill partner after he postponed making a decision on assisted dying has been denied bail by the Queensland Supreme Court.

Kylie Ellina Truswell-Mobbs, 50, was arrested on April 3, more than a year after the death of her partner, David Ronald Mobbs, 56, who died at their home in Alexandra Hills, southeast Brisbane, in December 2023.

During a bail hearing on Tuesday, the court heard that Mr Mobbs, who had been diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND), had expressed a desire to delay a decision on voluntary assisted dying just hours before his death.

Crown prosecutor Sarah Dennis alleged that later that same night, Truswell-Mobbs made three separate attempts to administer a lethal drug cocktail to Mr Mobbs via his feeding tube. “Her conduct was purposeful and determined,” Dennis told the court. “It continued over a number of hours through the night... her intent was protracted.”

According to Dennis, Truswell-Mobbs acted after a palliative care meeting on December 5, where Mr Mobbs reportedly told others he wished to delay his decision about assisted dying by at least a week. Despite this, prosecutors allege Truswell-Mobbs acted within hours to end his life.

The court also heard that Mr Mobbs, who used a signing board to communicate, had allegedly been given a lethal dose of drugs. Police claim Truswell-Mobbs later confessed her actions to both a close family member and a professional carer. One witness reported she told them she “couldn’t take it anymore”.

Truswell-Mobbs’ defence barrister, Ruth O’Gorman, argued for bail, noting that her client had no prior criminal history and had not fled during the 16 months she was under police investigation. O’Gorman also raised the possibility that the charge could be reduced, suggesting that aiding suicide might be more appropriate than murder.

“It’s not inevitable that the Crown would proceed with the charge of murder against her, or that the jury would convict,” O’Gorman said.

However, Justice Glenn Martin found the prosecution had a strong case, noting the significant body of evidence pointing toward a potential conviction. He said there was a clear distinction between knowing one is under investigation and being formally charged with murder.

Bail was denied, and Truswell-Mobbs is expected to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court for mention of the murder charge.

Images: Facebook

Michael Hutchence's daughter marries in intimate ceremony

Wedding bells chimed with joy in East London this weekend as Tiger Lily Hutchence, daughter of the late Paula Yates and INXS frontman Michael Hutchence, tied the knot with longtime love Ben Archer in a beautifully intimate ceremony.

The couple, who began dating in 2023, celebrated their love surrounded by close friends and family in a cozy restaurant with just 30 guests in attendance. The chic, low-key celebration was filled with warmth, laughter, and love – the perfect reflection of the couple’s bond.

Among the guests were Tiger Lily’s adoptive father, Bob Geldof, and her sisters, Pixie and Fifi, making the day a heartfelt family affair. The guest list also had a touch of rock royalty, with her godfather, musician Nick Cave, joining the festivities.

“Tiger Lily and Ben had a very chic, very low-key wedding on Saturday,” a source revealed to The Sun. “It was a beautiful day and, after the service, they all sat down to have a meal together.”

The newlyweds are also preparing for another exciting chapter – the arrival of their first child. Friends shared that the couple was eager to exchange vows before welcoming their new addition later this year.

“This is a huge year for Tiger Lily and Ben,” a source added. “Getting married in front of their nearest and dearest was the cherry on top for them.”

Despite growing up in the shadow of tragedy – having lost both her parents at a young age and her sister Peaches in 2014 – Tiger Lily has carved a life of quiet creativity. After spending time here in Australia, where she released her debut album "Tragic Tiger’s Sad Meltdown", she returned to London and now lives with Ben, a model.

Reflecting on her musical journey, Tiger Lily once said, “Most of the songs are about my sister, Peaches, who I lost as a teenager... but my band always made me feel held.”

Now, with love, music and a growing family at her side, it seems Tiger Lily Hutchence has found her own harmony – and her happily ever after.

Images: Instagram

"Dumb and Dumber": Karl levels brutal accusation

Treasurer Jim Chalmers has dismissed accusations that Australia’s major political parties are recklessly splurging on big-ticket promises to win votes, defending Labor’s fiscal strategy during a heated exchange with Today host Karl Stefanovic.

Stefanovic didn’t hold back on Monday morning, opening the interview with a blunt comparison, saying watching the major parties was like "watching Dumb and Dumber, you guys recklessly buying our votes".

Chalmers swiftly pushed back, insisting there is "a really important difference" between responsible budgeting and empty spending.

“What we've shown as a Labor government is we’ve been able to maintain a focus on the cost of living,” Chalmers said.

“At the same time, we’ve got the budget in much better nick, and that’s meant that we could make room for the sorts of commitments that we have been making in a really responsible way."

Chalmers pointed to the government’s fiscal achievements, highlighting a significantly stronger budget position. “The budget’s more than $200 billion stronger than when we came to office. We’ve got the Liberal debt down,” he said. “We’ve delivered those two surpluses, and that’s meant we’ve been able to help with the cost of living. Ongoing tax relief, helping with medicines and energy, bill rebates and the like.”

The debate comes as both Labor and the Coalition unveil costly housing policies, which economists warn could further inflate housing prices by injecting more money into an already overheated market.

Chalmers criticised the Coalition’s approach, claiming it lacks lasting impact. “What Peter Dutton did yesterday was to borrow and burn another $10 billion and still provide no ongoing cost of living help for people who are doing it tough," he argued.

“And then he’ll claw that back with permanently higher income taxes, lower wages and secret cuts to pay for his nuclear reactors.”

As the election campaign heats up, both sides are under increasing scrutiny over their spending pledges and their real impact on Australians facing mounting cost-of-living pressures.

Images: Today show

"Patrons yelled to stop": Comedy Festival rocked by death on opening night

Melbourne’s comedy scene was rocked by tragedy on the opening night of this year’s International Comedy Festival, as an attendee suffered a fatal medical episode mid-show, leading to the abrupt cancellation of the event.

The distressing incident occurred during comedian Michael Hing’s performance at the Palais Theatre, where a man on the upper level of the venue suffered a medical emergency. Attendees quickly responded, providing CPR in the dark while Hing remained unaware of the unfolding crisis.

“[It] would have been at least 15 mins worth before the show stopping, and [it] only stopped as patrons yelled to stop performing,” one audience member told The Daily Mail.

Another witness expressed dismay over the handling of the situation, stating, “I can’t believe they [the organisers] didn’t communicate with backstage to halt the show, and that it took the public to yell out to the comedian to stop for something to happen.”

The Melbourne International Comedy Festival addressed the incident in a statement posted on Instagram, confirming the show’s cancellation.

“Melbourne International Comedy Festival regrets to confirm that there was a medical emergency while the Opening Night Allstars Supershow was taking place this evening at the Palais Theatre,” a festival spokesman said. “The show was stopped and cancelled. The Festival will be in touch with all ticket holders tomorrow.”

Victoria Police later confirmed the man’s death. “Police will prepare a report for the Coroner following the death of a man in St Kilda on Wednesday, 26 March,” a spokesman said. “Emergency services were called to a theatre on Lower Esplanade about 9pm. A man, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.”

Health worker Andrea Bortoli, who was sitting in the upper level’s front row, described the distressing scene as people began leaving and it “became quite obvious that someone was getting CPR. It was just obviously really distressing, so we wanted to leave,” she told The Age.

Eventually, the theatre lights were turned on, and patrons were informed that the show had been cancelled.

The Allstars Gala is one of the most anticipated nights of the festival, bringing together some of the biggest names in comedy. This year’s event was hosted by Hing.

As news of the tragedy spread, comedian Dave Hughes expressed his sympathies on social media, writing, “All performers thoughts are with the family affected”.

Images: Palais Theatre / MichaelHing.com

Schumacher’s wife issues statement after blackmail furore

Michael Schumacher’s wife has issued a rare statement after three men were found guilty for blackmailing the Formula One legend.

Corinna Schumacher says the family has appealed the two-year suspended prison sentence given to the “mastermind” behind the shocking plot.

The perpetrators demanded $25 million (AUD) from the family in exchange of not releasing hundreds of private photos and videos of the Schumachers as well as digitised copies of Michael’s medical records.

The public prosecutor’s office said 900 pictures and nearly 600 videos of the family and Schumacher’s digitised medical records were confiscated from the perpetrators.

A district court in western Germany sentenced the main defendant to three years in prison, while his son received a six-month suspended sentence and a fine of $2,000 (AUD).

Another defendant, former security guard for the family Markus Fritsche, received a two-year suspended sentence and a fine of $4,000 (AUD) for aiding and abetting the other two men.

In a statement released on behalf of the family, Corinna said, “We have appealed against what we consider to be the far too lenient sentence for Mr. F.”

“In my opinion, he was the mastermind behind this. What still shocks me most is the massive breach of trust. He should receive a punishment that deters any potential copycats.”

Corinna and her family are considering further action against others allegedly involved in the operation.

“We do not share all of the court’s statements, in particular that Mr F. is only accused of aiding and abetting and not of complicity,” the Schumacher family’s lawyer Thilo Damm said.

“You can assume that we will exhaust all legal remedies available to us.”

The family has shielded Schumacher from public view since his serious skiing accident in December 2013.

Update on Samantha Murphy trial as accused enters plea

The man accused of murdering Ballarat mother Samantha Murphy has plead not guilty, electing to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, faced the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday via video link, while Ms Murphy’s husband, Mick Murphy, watched the hearing from the body of the courtroom.

Mr Stephenson, the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, was charged with Samantha's murder in March, just weeks after the 51-year-old went missing after leaving home for an morning run on February 4th.

Crown prosecutor Raymond Gibson KC told the court that Mr Stephenson had elected to fast-track his case to the Supreme Court for trial.

This skips a committal hearing in the Magistrates Court jurisdiction in which a magistrate hears the evidence and decides if they’re satisfied it could support a conviction, and will allow Mr Stephenson to face trial at an earlier date.

“Not guilty, Your Honour,” the accused man said when asked how he would like to plea.

Mr Stephenson was committed to stand trial by magistrate Mark Stratmann and will appear in the Supreme Court later in November.

“Because the matter is now in the purview of the Supreme Court of Victoria, that court will be dealing with all matters in relation to this proceeding,” Mr Stratmann said.

Following Mr Stephenson’s arrest in March, Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Shane Patton remained tight-lipped about how the accused man was identified, but said the arrest came after a “painstaking and methodical investigation”.

“I’m not going to identify what has specifically led us to this man other than to say it has come about from painstaking detective work with great assistance from the public,” he said at the time.

Samantha Murphy's disappearance and alleged murder shocked the community and quickly became one of the most high-profile missing persons investigations in the state, and despite the efforts of police and volunteers, her body has never been found.

Michael Schumacher’s son gives rare interview about his father

Michael Schumacher's son has shared a rare insight into his life after his dad's devastating skiing accident.

Mick Schumacher, who was only 14 at the time of his dad’s accident, pursued his dream of reaching F1 without his father's guidance, and has spoken about how much his dad father continued to inspire him.

In the new book Inside Mercedes F1 written by Matt Whyman, the author had unrestricted access to the team, with the book including a conversation with Mick about his father’s influence.

The 25-year-old, who became a reserve driver for Mercedes in 2023, told Whyman, “I was a crazy kid — everything my dad did, I did."

“He was really supportive and a lot of fun, but could also be challenging. One time in a karting race I braked very late going into a corner and gained a lot of time."

“When I told him about it, he said, ‘Yes, but you should have braked like that in every corner!’."

“Whenever he felt like I was not taking it seriously, he would say, ‘Mick, would you rather go and play football with your friends? If so, we do not need to do all of this’."

“I insisted that I wanted to race and he said, ‘Okay, then let’s do it properly’. So we started doing more European karting and I was getting better.”

Mick later explained that he learned “a lot of technical points” from his dad that he “still uses today”, adding, “I started racing in the Formula classes the year after the accident and from that point onwards, I had to find my own feet."

“I started karting aged three. I was six when I first went scuba diving. Aged 10 I was skydiving."

“My dad was always very open to me trying out whatever I wanted to do and racing is all I wanted to do, because I enjoyed it the most.”

Baywatch star dies after lengthy health battle

Baywatch actor Michael Newman has died at the age of 68 after a lengthy battle with Parkinson's disease.

The actor, who played lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman on Baywatch in the 1990s, was diagnosed with the neurological condition 18 years ago, and died “from heart complications” on Sunday evening “surrounded by his family and friends.”

His death was confirmed Tuesday by Newman’s close friend, Matt Felker, who recently directed the Hulu docu-series about Baywatch.

“I got to see Mike the last time he was conscious and he looked [at] me and in typical Mike fashion said, ‘You’re just in time,’” Felker told People.

Newman was the only Baywatch cast member who was a real-life lifeguard. He appeared on 150 episodes of the show, the most of anyone except David Hasselhoff.

While starring on Baywatch, he continued to work as a full-time firefighter and returned to the job after the show ended in 2001, until he retired after 25 years.

Newman was 50 when he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2006, as he spoke about living with the disease just months ago.

“This terminal disease has allowed me a lot of thinking time, which I maybe didn’t want, but it’s brought me wisdom,” Newman told People in August.

“My body has changed so slowly that I hardly notice it, yet I am constantly reminded that Parkinson’s has now become the centre of my life,” he added.

“I am cherishing the days that I get to be on this earth with family and friends,” he went on. “I’m taking life seriously.”

Newman spent the final years of his life raising money with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to help find a cure for Parkinson’s.

The late star is survived by his wife of 36 years, Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, and their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.

Man accused of scalding baby in park identified

The man accused of pouring scalding hot coffee over a nine-month-old baby in a Brisbane park has finally been identified, after fleeing the country.

On August 27th, baby Luka was in Hanlon Park with his mother when a man approached them and poured hot coffee over the infant, leaving him with lifelong injuries.

The man then fled the country before he could be identified or detained by police.

Now, the man in question has now been identified as a 33-year-old Chinese national who was in Australia on a student visa.

He allegedly fled the scene after gravely injuring the child and drove over the state border to Sydney, where he flew out of the country on August 31st.

Queensland Police have since put an arrest warrant out for the man for intending to cause grievous bodily harm, which carried a maximum penalty of a life sentence.

Police said he had no family or criminal record in Australia and had previously worked in Queensland, NSW and Victoria, with Chinese media reporting that the man was born in Hangzhou, China.

“Queensland Police are working with national and international partner agencies to progress this investigation further,” a statement from Queensland Police said.

Speaking to 4BC Radio on Thursday morning, Acting Assistant Police Commissioner Andrew Massingham said police were “very much committed” to arresting the man.

“Our international search continues for the person that committed that horrendous crime,” he said. “That child will have those injuries for life.”

Queensland Police Detective Inspector Paul Dalton previously revealed the man fled the country just 12 hours after they identified him.

“Detectives are devastated that they missed this person by 12 hours. I was deflated, but that deflation quickly turns into determination and resilience to get the job done.”

Image credits: 9News / Queensland Police

Michael Schumacher attends first 'public' event since accident

Michael Schumacher has reportedly attended his daughter's wedding, making this his first public appearance in 11 years.

Gina Schumacher tied the knot with Iain Bethke at the family’s luxury villa in Mallorca over the weekend, and while Michael's attendance was previously unknown, several outlets have reported that he attended the special event.

The Formula 1 icon's wife, Corinna, has kept his condition private since his tragic skiing accident in 2013, with only an extremely small inner circle of people allowed to see him, therefore this marks the first time that Michael has been 'seen' by extended friends and family.

The Daily Mail reported that privacy was extremely tight at the event, with wedding guests required to leave their phones at the front door upon arrival.

The family also reportedly looked at hiring a large security team to keep photographers away.

The success of the event has reportedly raised hopes that the family will consider future opportunities for the Ferrari icon to be seen in public, with more people reportedly being let into the 'inner circle'.

Michael's son Mick, who has been dating 23-year-old Danish model Laila Hasanovic for two years, is reportedly engaged to her, and in January it was reported that she had been given approval to visit the F1 legend.

Updates on the former racer's health have been few and far between.

Late last year, Schumacher's former boss at Ferrari and close friend Jean Todt revealed: "He is simply not the Michael he used to be. He is different, and is wonderfully guided by his wife and children who protect him. His life is different now, and I have the privilege of sharing moments with him. That's all there is to say."

Corinna also spoke publicly about the accident and her decision to keep Michael's condition private in a 2021 Netflix documentary.

"'Private is private’, as he always said. It’s very important to me that he can continue to enjoy his private life as much as possible,” she said.

“Michael always protected us and now we are protecting Michael. What he really didn’t like was the press, the people, all the hype around him. That’s not what he wanted. He wanted to do the sport," she continued.

In the documentary she also said: “I miss Michael every day.

“But it is not just me who misses him. It’s the children, the family, his father, everyone around him. I mean, everybody misses Michael, but Michael is here.

“Different, but he’s here, and that gives us strength. We’re together. We live together at home.”

Michael reportedly moved from his Swiss home to the exclusive Spanish villa where Gina's wedding was held in September 2020 according to the Spanish press.

According to The Sun, Michael spent much of his recent life at the $50 million villa, which is believed to have been adapted allowing a team of doctors and nurses to provide round-the-clock care.

Image: Instagram
