“Barbarian” Aussie rides moped in Pompeii

An Aussie tourist has been dubbed a “barbarian” after stupidly driving a moped in the ancient site of Pompeii.

The 33-year-old was spotted on CCTV entering the historic site where construction vehicles were allowed in which prompted them to chase him down immediately.

It is alleged the man rode the moped for almost 2km before he was captured by police and charged with “unauthorised access”.

"The route taken is a dirt road outside the ancient city walls, used by site vehicles for excavation works," the park said in a statement.

"It is safe, restored, and not accessible to the public. So there was no danger for either visitors or for the archaeological heritage at any point."

The man claims that he did not know he was riding through an ancient site which was destroyed from a volcanic eruption in 79AD.

It has been confirmed that luckily the man did not destroy anything of the 2,000-year-old historic site.

Image: CCTV
