Banksy mural on the side of dilapidated farmhouse destroyed

A dilapidated farmhouse, with a Banksy mural on its side, has been demolished in the seaside town of Herne Bay in Kent, England.

The artwork, called Morning is Broken, features a young boy with a cat at his side opening corrugated iron curtains and staring at the world outside.

The farmhouse was built in 1529, and was approved for demolition in late 2022, before anyone realised the importance of the mural.

“We had no idea it was a Banksy. It made me feel sick realising it was a Banksy—we were gutted,” contractor George Caudwell told KentOnline.

“We started demolishing it yesterday. The landowner watched us do it and didn’t know either.”

Banksy shared news of the demolition on his Instagram with a series of pictures, posting a photo of the destruction, simply writing over the image, “Morning is broken.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Banksy (@banksy)

One person who has a personal connection with the farmhouse left a comment for the elusive street artist, writing, “This was my grandma's farm house before it was left to ruins, I spent so many happy hours in the house and at the farm, this was even done on the room I used to sleep in with the farm cat.”

“Thank you so much for this Mr Banksy, my grandparents would have been very proud ❤️”.

The demolition comes just weeks after another Banksy artwork in the UK town of Margate was destroyed.

The artist took up the theme of domestic violence against women in a piece titled Valentine’s Day Mascara, depicting a 1950s housewife with a missing tooth and a black eye as she packs a male body into a real-life freezer chest.

“This is disgusting”: Mural for murdered women defaced with graffiti

A street artist has been captured painting over a mural depicting the names and photos of women murdered across Australia in acts of domestic violence.

The mural, plastered on Melbourne’s famous Hosier Lane, depicts some of the almost 80 women killed since the start of 2023, and the locations they died around Australia.

The mural also shows the alarming statistics of domestic violence across Australia in data compiled by The RED HEART Campaign - an ongoing memorial project dedicated to tracking the known women and children killed in acts of gendered violence.

The mural was painted in the lane on International Women’s Day (March 8th), and was defaced just 10 days later.

An unknown street artist was captured on video spray painting over the women’s faces, with the words “13 WOLF 69” covering most of the mural, as the beginning of a large orange text covering the southeast corner of the map.

When murdered women are erased for the second time! #femicide #shematters pic.twitter.com/TYpLQFmpCx

— Sherele Moody (Femicide Researcher) 🌈 (@ShereleMoody) March 18, 2023

The video, posted by the campaign founder Sherele Moody, then pans slowly to capture the artist still spraying the wall with orange paint – what seem to be the finishing touches to the large piece that stretches for metres toward Flinders Street.

“That’s more important, that’s lovely,” someone can be heard sarcastically saying in the footage.

“That’s not even art!”

Sherele captioned the video as an example of “when murdered women are erased for a second time”.

“The dude could have moved his scribble a few feet and not painted over the faces of murdered women,” she added.

“The Lane is pretty big – there’s room for all of us!”

Supporters of the campaign immediately reacted in disgust to the “selfish, heartless artist”, with many saying the disregard for the mural really “hurts”.

“What the actual f,” one woman wrote.

“This is disgusting. This is about murdered women and a memorial. When did we become so disrespectful.”

While most of the backlash was in support of the advocates, others questioned whether the artist was even aware of what he had done or was partially covering.

Others simply said it was the harsh nature of Melbourne’s internationally renowned street art culture.

Queen Elizabeth II mural painted over

A mural of Queen Elizabeth II has been painted over with the Aboriginal Flag a few days after the monarch was laid to rest.

Queen Elizabeth died on September 8 at Balmoral Castle in Scotland and was buried on September 19 at King George VI Memorial Chapel in St George's Chapel.

The day of her death saw local Sydney artist Stuart Sale paint the mural in the inner-west suburb of Marrickville.

Bobby, another local member of the community, told OverSixty that Mr Sale had painted the mural at night, and had then come back the next morning to touch it up.

“There was quite a crowd around him as he finalised the mural,” he said.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Melbourne artist charged over Shane Warne memorial

A Melbourne street artist has been charged over painting a mural of the late cricket legend Shane Warne on the side of an empty house.

Jarrod Grech spent over 30 hours painting the mural after Warne’s sudden death in March in an attempt to lift community spirit.

The artist had done a number of paintings on the same wall of an empty house in Carlton over the past three years, as had many other street artists in the area.

Despite the mural being appreciated by locals, Grech has now been charged by police with “intentionally and without lawful excuse” damaging property by not obtaining the homeowner’s permission.

Grech said he painted the mural purely as a sign of respect to Shane Warne and his family.

“This is my way of expressing loss,” he told 7News.

Even Warne’s daughter Summer expressed her love and admiration of the mural as she posted it on Instagram

“Looks unreal, did a bloody great job,” she wrote.

“He would love it too.”

After seeing Summer’s reaction, Grech said having her approval of his art meant the world to him.

“It makes me feel a lot better about the charges, like it makes it feel like it’s worth doing to make them happy,” he said.

Street art advocate Dean Sunshine, whose own factory acts as an outdoor gallery for artists, said the charges against Grech are hypocritical.

“We live in Melbourne which prides itself on a huge street art scene, and people are doing murals all over town so I just couldn’t believe it,” he said.

Meet water tower mural artist Joel Fergie

Known as the Banksy of the bush, Zookeeper is an artist who travels around outback Australia painting giant murals. Unlike Banksy, the Zookeeper doesn't hide his identity.

Joel Fergie aka "Zookeeper" is based Sunshine Coast. His large-scale artworks span inner-city laneways to remote silos and water towers across central Australia.

Some of his biggest works can be seen on painted tanks and silos in Cloncurry, Mackay, Hughenden, Thallon as well as interstate.

Joel says he got the name Zookeeper from his childhood love of wildlife. "As a kid I was obsessed with animals and I was a huge David Attenborough fan and as I learnt to paint, animals became a big part of that," he said.

The 32-year-old artist, who studied fine art at QUT and graduated in 2011, said art was a big part of his life growing up.

"I wasn't born great at painting; it was something that I had to put a lot of time and practice into and gradually over time I got better.

"I started by doing my bedroom wall and then under our house, then a few friends asked me to do their café and then a I did a soccer club and the more I did the more opportunities arose."

The biggest job that Joel has done was seven silos at Sea Lake in north-west Victoria which took him over three weeks. When tackling the big jobs, Zookeeper collaborates with his mate and fellow artist Drapl aka Travis Vinson.

"We meet in 2010 and we had heard of each other and ever since then, when there's a big job that requires many hands, we collaborate," he said.

"The big jobs can take weeks and weeks of planning and we can use over 500 litres of paint."

Most of Zookeeper's and Drapl's work comes from community grants or funds raised by the community, and over the past decade he believes he has painted more than 1,000 murals.

"My favourite part of painting in the outback is the openness of people. There's fewer people, so they have more time for you," he said.

Joel's last big mural was a water tower in Middlemount which he finished in December and last week he finished a retaining wall in the Pioneer Valley community at the Marian State School which was only 20 metres by 2 metres.

Image: ABC
