Rare coin hidden for decades to fetch eye-watering sum

Three sisters from the US who inherited a dime coin kept it in a bank vault for more than 40 years, and while they know it had some value, they didn't know just how much until a few years ago.

The rare coin, struck by the US Mint in San Francisco in 1975, could be worth more than $US500,000 ($748,000), according to Ian Russell, president of GreatCollections, the auction house selling the coin.

What makes the coin depicting President Franklin D. Roosevelt so valuable is that it is just one of two coins missing the "S" mint mark for San Francisco.

The other dime sold for $US682,000 (over $1 million) at a 2019 auction and then again months later to a private collector.

While avid coin collectors have known about the existence of these two extraordinarily rare coins, their whereabouts had remained a mystery since the late 1970s.

“They were hidden for decades,” Russell said.

“Most major collectors and dealers have never seen one.”

The three sisters from Ohio, who want to remain anonymous, inherited one of the two dimes after the recent death of their of their brother, Russell said.

They told Russell that their brother and mother bought the first error coin discovered in 1978 for $27,225, which would amount to roughly $135,000 today.

Their parents, who ran a dairy farm, saw the coin as a financial safety net, and it was only until last year that one of the sisters saw the coin first-hand.

Russell also said that their brother had reached out to him about seven years ago and told him about the coin, but he too kept it a secret.

When Russell told one of the sisters about the potential value of the coin, she told him: “is that really possible?”.

The coin, known as the “1975 ‘no S’ proof dime,” will be displayed at a coin show beginning on Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, and before the auction closes late next month, Russell said.

The current highest bidder has offered $US250,000 ($374,000).

Images: Great Collections/ Professional Coin Grading Services

Troubled TV host Andrew O’Keefe arrested

Troubled TV presenter Andrew O'Keefe has once again been arrested after allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

The former Deal or No Deal host was arrested at a home in Vaucluse, in Sydney's eastern suburbs just before 11am on Thursday.

NSW Police arrested the 51-year-old before he was taken to Waverley Police Station, where he was charged with breach of bail.

The Channel 7 personality was refused police bail on the spot and appeared at Waverely Local Court.

The court heard that O’Keefe tested positive for drugs but his lawyer argued the swab was contaminated.

He was then released on bail and spoke to the media, furious that he was unable to tell his side of the story.

“You don't get to hear the story,” he said outside of court.

“The thing about the justice system is that we get no time to prepare as the defendant.

“And you're at a distinct disadvantage about getting the facts to even your own people.”

O’Keefe’s lawyer argued in court that there was a limited information following the police’s swap test to check his client for drugs.

“That's what we discovered in court today. There was a high probability of contempt, erm, contamination (to the sample),” O’Keefe said.

Back in January, O’Keefe received six charges, with police alleging he grabbed a sex worker by the throat before punching her and pushing her to the ground.

He pleaded not guilty to all six, which included three counts of common assault, intentionally choking a person without consent, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

In February, he pleaded guilty to a separate charge of drug possession.

In June, O’Keefe appeared in court to challenge a charge of breaching an apprehended violence order (AVO) against another complainant, and again in July to examine the evidence relating to the allegations of assault and choking.

Image: Nine News

Mum left devastated after no guests attend her daughter’s party

A US woman has been left devastated after none of the 27 invited guests showed at her daughter’s third birthday party.

Mum-of-three Breanna Strong had planned a massive celebration for her daughter, Avery, at KidsTopia Playground, a “jungle-themed indoor playground”, and had catered with pizzas, a Frozen-themed cake, and plenty of goodies for the kids.

But, she was left devastated for her daughter when none of the kids turned up.

Taking to TikTok, the 27-year-old shared her heartbreak in a clip that quickly went viral and prompted a flood of love to be sent Avery’s way.

“We invited 27 kids to Avery's third birthday party. Not a single one of her friends showed up,” she wrote in the video, which showed the empty party room.

“Money and time wasted. Pizza, Frozen cake, and jungle gym. She didn’t know any different rather than having fun. Just shattered my heart,” Strong explained.

Commenters were quick to share their support for the young girl, with some sharing that they had similar experiences with their children.

“Let’s have a redo. I’ll travel and got a bunch of kids who loves to make friends,” one suggested.

“This is a rule at my house. If we are invited, we’re GOING!” another wrote.

“We have been the only one that shows up. So sad this happens, I’m so sorry,” a third said.

“This happened to one of my daughters. Now I make sure we show up to everyone’s party we are invited to. Ash Barty praised for generous gesture

Claiming her fifth title of the year, Ash Barty has won the title at the Cincinnati Masters and when she went up to accept her victory, she asked her team to come on to the court so they could celebrate with her – a generous action many have praised her for.

It's these types of gestures which prove Barty is a class act - both on and off the court. Fans are praising the 25-year-old for her heartwarming insistence that her team come on to the court and celebrate the victory with her.

Her coach Craig Tyzzer, partner Garry Kissick, physio Mel Omizzolo and physical performance coach Matt Hayes all joined Barty and posed for photos with the trophy.

Barty, who often refers to her achievements as ‘we’ instead of ‘I’, if the first one to acknowledge the role her support team plays in helping her get the best out of herself.

“I know the work that I’ve put in with my team,” she told WTA Insider.

“That’s where all the gold lies. That’s where all of our good stuff hides,” she added.

World No. 1 women’s tennis player

The Aussie tennis star’s dream run ended when she beat Jil Teichmann in the final of the Cincinnati Masters.

With this win, Barty can add this latest trophy to the silverware she’s won in Melbourne, Miami, Stuttgart and at Wimbledon this season as the world No. 1 women’s tennis player.

Barty’s game was impeccable as she played her Swiss rival, beating her 6-3 6-1 to continue her winning streak. She is the first Australian to win this tournament since her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley did so 48 years ago in 1973.

Barty told reporters at the Cincinnati Masters: “I think being able to come through and play a really clean week and walk away with the title is probably not what I really expected of myself, but (it’s) certainly nice,”

“Then, when I get to come out here and I get to enjoy my matches and when I’m really locked in, that gold stuff comes forward and that’s when I play my best tennis,” she said.

Barty has been overseas for five months and she opened up on the emotional toll being away from home and playing at such a high level has had on her.

“I think sometimes after big wins — and I felt it both times after the French Open and after Wimbledon — there’s been a little bit of a big crash, more emotionally than anything else, because there’s so much invested into that event,” she said.

“But I’m so incredibly lucky to have such a good team around me who can put things into perspective and then also lift me up and lighten things up, typically those weeks after big events.”

Barty didn’t drop a set in Cincinnati and she’ll head into the US Open later this month as the hot favourite to scoop up major title number three.

Photo: Getty Images

How to discover your half-a-million-dollar retirement nest egg

Many people are quickly discouraged when they think about retirement. They think it’s all too hard, that they have left it too late and there is no way they are ever going to save enough to live on when they do stop work.

Typically, this is because they have overlooked their unseen, unsaved ‘half a million dollar nest egg’.

By this of course, I’m referring the Federal Government’s aged pension, which is available to all Australians who reach retirement age, subject to how much money you own outside your own home.

It’s a significant back stop for anyone approaching retirement and should be the basis of your retirement plans. Importantly, once you qualify for it, you can’t loose it, its indexed for inflation, its tax free and it will last as long as you do. It is very much your long-lost nest egg.

So, for a home owning couple, you can own up to $401,500 in assets in addition to your own home and still qualify for the full age pension, which is currently set at $37,000 a year, paid out each fortnight.

To generate the equivalent income privately, you will need to save $500,000 a year and obtain a steady return, year in year out, of 7.5 per cent plus capital gains to ensure your assets keep up with inflation.

So even if you think it’s all too late and you have no money set aside for retirement, think again. As an Australian, you effectively have half a million dollars just sitting there, waiting for you.

Needless to say, the more money you do own in addition to your own home, beyond $400,000, the less you will receive in terms of the age pension and for those who own more than $800,000, the age pension will cut out completely.

However, if you do own your own home and have more than $800,000 in savings, you should be confident you will enjoy financial security throughout your retirement without relying on the age pension.

However, the reason it’s so important to keep in mind that the age pension is there through retirement, acting if you like as a safety net, is that it should help you as you approach retirement to avoid taking undue risks with your precious retirement savings.

If nothing else, it should help explode the myth that you need a million dollars saved in order to enjoy your later years and with this, help all Australians plan better for a safe and secure retirement knowing they have the age pension to fall back on.

When this becomes your starting point, the key questions then become how can I find somewhere to live where I don’t have a mortgage and how much money can I squeeze into super so I have a second income stream in addition to my age pension entitlements?

If you look at your retirement from this perspective, you will start seeing it in a very different light and hopefully it will encourage you to really think through your options about how you do choose to live.

The age pension should be the cornerstone of your retirement planning if you’re worried you haven’t saved enough. Importantly, if you think you might qualify for an age pension, you should start applying for it early and certainly within a year of when you hope to qualify for it based on your age.

This will give you plenty of time to meet with someone from Centrelink and complete all the paperwork they require. Be completely honest with Centrelink and they will help you make the most of your entitlements.

Patricia Howard, author of The No-Regrets Guide to Retirement: how to live well, invest wisely and make your money last (Wiley), is a licenced Australian financial adviser. Ten key steps to help you make your retirement the best years of your life

Too often Australians approach their retirement years with dread. They fear they won’t have enough money to live on and worse still, that somehow, they will run out of money when they most need it.

In writing The No-Regrets Guide to Retirement: how to live well, invest wisely and make your money last, I want all Australians to know they can have the retirement of their dreams and live a happy, wonderful life after they stop work.

I also wanted to help as many Australians as possible, avoid some of the more obvious pitfalls, that can lead to financial heartbreaks and the sort of regrets that can last the rest of their lives. Hopefully some simple tips can stave off the more obvious disasters.

Tip 1. Don’t Grow Old and Grey. Go Harlequin!

Don’t live your retirement the way your parents did or according to some out-dated rule book. Most importantly, don’t skimp on the here and now, so you can leave a nest egg for your children. Retirement is your big opportunity. Make the most of every single day

Tip 2. Your ‘Half a Million’ Retirement Nest egg

Every Australian is eligible for the age pension. While it is means tested, this is the equivalent of having $500,000 in retirement savings. More, its secure, indexed for inflation and you will never lose it – it’s your long-lost retirement nest egg.

There’s too much talk in the financial planning industry that you need a million dollars to retire. Don’t give up on your financial situation. There are still lots of strategies to help you make the most of your financial position and taking advantage of the age pension is one of them.

Tip 3. Make Good Choices

Just as a healthy diet focuses on good food choices, so you should choose good investment options. Think ‘high yielding dividends’ spiced up by ‘franking credits’ and served with a dish of ‘capital growth‘ on the side.

Retirement is a time in your life to make god decisions about your health, about staying fit and thinking long term. That’s the case for your finances as well. Make healthy financial decisions.

Tip 4. And give up the (financial) smokes!

A key downside of the financial industry focusing so much attention on people needing a million dollars to retire is that it makes people anxious and this in turn prompts many to take risk with their money.

Your precious retirement savings are irreplaceable. Don’t put your money into anything you don’t understand and remember retirement is all about generating as much income as you can as safely as possible with some capital growth.

Tip 5. Live Like A Millionaire

Learn to live off investments just like millionaires do. As John Travolta once said, “I learnt very early how millionaires live. They never spend their capital, just the income it generates, and they always get good advice”.

Make sure you know exactly how much money your investments are generating and adjust your spending each year to stay within those limits. That’s the key of making sure you never run out of money.

Tip 6. ‘Slide’ Into Retirement

These days, few people just stop working at age 65. Find a new mojo and slide your way into retirement. Find a side hustle, volunteer or turn a hobby into a business - you just need to find your groove.

If you can monetarize these activities or find a way of making some additional income from them, it will take some of the financial pressure off you in retirement and help make your money last that much longer.

Tip 7. Families – Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em

While families can be a great source of happiness as you grow older, they can be a massive financial burden. Never speak to your family or love ones about your financial situation except in the most general terms and never allow your savings to become part of regular conversations.

This only encourages others to think you will always have a few dollars to spare to help them out. That may or may not be the case, but it should be your decision. It should not be your family pushing you to give them cash.

Tip 8. Sexually transmitted poverty

It’s surprising how often love lives and financial affairs become intertwined. If you are living alone, step up and make sure you take control of your financial situation and make sound decisions about what you do with your money.

Be wary of romantic involvements and the scams that can come with them. Everything from sending money to on-line romantic encounters to backing your partner in a new business deal. Make sure you do your homework and look upon any money you give someone as a gift and not a loan.

Tip 9. Build your “Escape Hatch”.

Make sure you have a strategy outlining what you will do if all goes wrong. Again remember, you will always qualify for the age pension and you can’t lose it, its indexed for inflation and it will last as long as you do.

Tip 10. Most importantly enjoy your retirement

Make good decisions to maximise your income in retirement and then get on with enjoying life. Do not make the mistake of spending all day, every day counting your pennies. There are more important things to do in life than that.

Written by Patricia Howard

Patricia Howard, author of The No-Regrets Guide to Retirement: how to live well, invest wisely and make your money last (Wiley), is a licenced Australian financial adviser. “Despair and devastation”: John Edward's gut feeling about 9/11 weeks before it happened

John Edward, well known psychic medium, had a gut feeling he just couldn’t shake as he was in a ballroom back in 2001.

He shared with Mamamia’s No Filter Podcast about the weird sensation he felt as he ducked into a nearby lobby to take a phone call from a friend.

“It was the most eerie, ominous, evil feeling. I can’t even tell you,” he said. “I get goose bumps as I tell you this. I looked around and I looked at the security guard, and then I remember looking everywhere around, and I just was like, ‘Oh’.

“I walked out of the building, and I went to my wife. I go, ‘I need to talk to you… You have to find a new place [for the competition]; you can’t do it here next year.’ And she’s like, ‘What?’ I go, ‘I don’t want you to come down here. Go talk to your boss. You’ve got to get it moved’.”

His wife was surprised at his sudden panic and kept pressing for an answer.

“I go, ‘Death, despair and devastation’.”

The nearby lobby he was standing in happened to be the World Trade Center.

The feelings Edward felt that day in mid-August, 2001 – just weeks before tragedy struck on September 11 – sat with him for a long time. They reappeared when he was dining with friends and his wife, Sandra, suggested brunch at the World Trade Center restaurant, View of the World.

It was here that Edward erupted.

“I turned to her and snapped. I bit her head off, like a lunatic. She like looked at me, like, ‘I’m gonna be polite because we’re in front of other people right now, but I want to push your arse in front of an oncoming bus for the way you just spoke to me.’

“But I just really erupted. [I said] ‘There’s no way you’re getting me in that building! There’s no way I’m going up there.’ I can’t even convey to you how it came out. It was like a Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde moment. It was really weird.”

Edward then spend the next days in a deep depression. It was so noticeable that even strangers, who recognised him from his show Crossing Over, asked him if he was OK.

“I was really struggling. It was a debilitating doom-and-gloom feeling, like I didn’t want to get out of bed if I didn’t have to,” he said.

It was only when Edward recorded an episode of CNN interview program Larry King Live that the fog within him lifted. The pair had spoken about loss, grief and how to cope.

However, the following day was one that plunged the world into a state of shock and unease as two planes that were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists flew into the World Trade Center twin towers on September 11. The attack killed 2,977 people and reduced the buildings to toxic dust that still claims victims to this day.

After the attack, Edward was contacted by several New Yorkers as well as people from the surrounding areas.

“They literally said to me, ‘You were the last thing we watched, my husband and I. You were the last thing that we watched, us together. We had a conversation about grief. We had a conversation about the afterlife because of you. It was the last thing that we did.’"

Are you at risk? Data sharing amongst health apps is more common than you think

Some of the sensitive information you might share with a doctor, including your age, sex, medical conditions and current symptoms, are being shared with popular health apps.

Although it’s easy to feel like these applications are helping you, a new study has found that the data that users input into these apps are being shared with third party entities.

The study, published in the British Medical Journal, has found that user data from health-related mobile apps on the Android platform is routine and not transparent at all.

The information that is put into these health apps can be shared with app developers, their parent companies and potentially dozens of third-party entities. Therefore, the information that you think is private ends up being distributed on a wide scale.

Lead author of the report, Dr Quinn Grundy, said that health apps are a “booming market”, but is one with many privacy failings. She told The ABC:

"I think many of us would expect that this kind of data should be treated differently," said Dr Grundy, an assistant professor at the University of Toronto.

"Unfortunately, our study shows that that's not the case. These apps behave in much the same way as your fitness app, weather app or music app."

Dr Grundy and colleagues at the University of Sydney examined 24 medicine related Android applications that are popular in Australia, North America and the United Kingdom. Some of these apps included ones that might remind you when to take a prescription.

The researchers found that 19 out of 24 apps shared data outside of the application to a total of 55 different entities, owned by 46 parent companies.

The information that was shared included users emails and device ID to medical conditions and drug lists.

The researchers discovered that Amazon and Alphabet, the parent company of Google, received the highest volume of user data. This was closely followed by Microsoft.

Dr Grundy explained that whilst most apps have a privacy policy and said that the data was stripped of identifying information, they described what was collected and shared in very general terms.

"They wouldn't name specific third parties or why data was shared with them. But would say, 'we never sell your data, but we may shared anonymised, aggregated reports with third parties for legitimate business purposes'," she explained.

Peter Hannay, an adjunct lecturer and security researcher at Edith Cowan University has offered a solution.

"It's not a matter of 'swap to a different app'," he said.

"It would be a matter of just not using those sorts of services at all."

However, if you do want to use these services, he has some advice for that as well.

"If the application is reminding you to take medication, I would try to find one that doesn't require permission to connect to the internet," he said.

"If it's able to work offline, that's something I would consider to be desirable."

Do you use any apps that require health data? Let us know in the comments.

Embracing her beauty! Tracy Grimshaw shares new make-up free photos

A Current Affair host Tracy Grimshaw has posted some make-up free snaps on her Instagram account, in a bid to throw paparazzi off the scent, as they attempt to score unflattering photos of her on her private property, and away from her day job in front of the TV camera.

The veteran Channel Nine journalist, who turned 58 on June 3, shared the make-up free photos at her property with her supportive fans, cheekily writing, “Paps are in my street again so here’s a free shot of what they’re after: without make up or hair done, looking unkempt and flushed from working, preferably with #restingbitchface, work clothes covered in furkid hair, and maybe some horse snot thrown in.”

A post shared by Tracy Grimshaw (@tracygrimshaw007) on Jul 14, 2018 at 7:12pm PDT

She continued, “Now the mags and websites don’t have to pay to have me stalked by strange men to get this pic. Jetlag is always a challenge though!"

Congratulations on the sweet milestone Nicole and Keith!

The moment Studio 10 host Angela Bishop got the news no mother wants to hear

Ten years ago, Studio 10 host Angela Bishop went through one of the hardest times of her life.

When Angela was pregnant with her daughter Amelia, doctors discovered in her ultrasound at 19 weeks that her baby had a congenital heart condition.

"If they hadn't picked up the problem in the ultrasound at 19 weeks, she could have died," Angela told ten daily.

When Angela gave birth to her daughter, she gave her a quick kiss and a hug before she was whisked away to surgery so the doctors could treat the serious issue.

Amelia in the Grace Centre. Image via ten daily.

"I had a very easy delivery, just a few hours, and we would very likely have been sent home quite quickly because they wouldn't have known anything was wrong and, without treatment, we would have lost her."

At just two days old, Amelia had heart surgery to treat her pulmonary heart stenosis. Angela’s newborn daughter then spent five days at the Grace Centre for Newborn Care at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead, Sydney, in the care of staff who are specialised in helping babies.

Now, 10 years later, Amelia has asked her mum if they could help the Grace Centre and all the newborns who are currently there.

The centre is fitted with beds, ventilators and other expensive equipment that helps the Grace Centre maintain its 98 per cent survival rate.

“The advances in medical technology are accelerating and we are greedy,” said Professor Nadia Badawi, Medical Director at the Grace Centre.

“We want the best, and those babies and their families, they deserve the best. They did not ask to be born unwell.”

Knowing that the Grace Centre saved her life, Amelia hopes to raise funds, so the ward can purchase the best possible technology for the newborns.

Two years ago, at the age of 8, Amelia spoke at the Annual Grace Gala in front of a room of 400 people to share her story.

For more information and to donate to the Grace Centre, click here.
