Pirates of the Caribbean actor and former pro surfer killed in shark attack

<p>Tamayo Perry, renowned surfer and actor known for his role in <em>Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides</em>, tragically lost his life in a shark attack off Oahu's North Shore on Sunday.</p> <p>The 49-year-old was surfing near Goat Island when the incident occurred, as confirmed by Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.</p> <p>Perry, who played a buccaneer in the popular movie franchise, had a distinguished career with appearances in films such as <em>Blue Crush</em> and the television series <em>Hawaii Five-O</em>. Beyond his acting career, Perry was celebrated as a former professional surfer and a beloved lifeguard.</p> <p>Responding to an emergency call just before 1pm local time, personnel from Honolulu Ocean Safety, alongside the city's fire, police and emergency medical services departments, rushed to Malaekahana Beach. The caller reported seeing a man who appeared to have suffered shark bites. Lifeguards promptly brought Perry to shore, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. In response to the attack, Ocean Safety personnel posted shark warnings in the area.</p> <p>"Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more," said Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager at a news conference. "Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected," added Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, describing Perry's death as "a tragic loss".</p> <p>Perry, alongside his wife Emilia, ran the Oahu Surfing Experience, a business offering surfing lessons. According to his biography on the company's website, Perry surfed professionally for over 15 years, notably winning the Pipeline Master trials in 1999. He began his career as a lifeguard on the North Shore for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety in July 2016. That same year, he appeared in <em>Pirates of the Caribbean</em> and an episode of <em>Hawaii Five-0</em>.</p> <p>Perry's wife Emilia shared a heartfelt tribute to her lost husband on Instagram, writing: "We all want to be the hero of our own story, one of the redeeming characteristics of humanity is our desire to follow our convictions always and without fear. Few of us are able to truly be that hero, Tamayo Perry was is and will be forever.</p> <p>"He was everyone’s big brother, stern and uncompromising with an infectious and kolohe smile. He was your rescuer in time of need, your safety when all things fell apart. He was a knight forged in the fires of the North Shore in the 90’s, his faith in Christ the rock upon which he stood. Few are those who truly follow in the footsteps of Jesus, Tamayo never took his eyes off the path.</p> <p>"Tragic though his passing may be, he left this world doing what he loved where he loved to do it. We find strength in knowing he is in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ, trading barrels at Pipeline with his friends that have gone before him."</p> <p>The World Surf League also expressed their condolences in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to share that the surf community lost a beloved icon yesterday. A well-known surfer and lifeguard, Tamayo Perry, passed away after injuries from a shark attack that occurred on the East Side of Oahu. Tamayo was a Pipeline/Teahupo’o specialist, freesurfer, former competitor, and member of the WSL for many years. He became a lifeguard for the city and was a big part of the North Shore community. Pirates of the Caribbean island up for sale

Sam Armytage’s blistering response to man who criticised her outfit

But thx for your feedback,” she wrote.</p> <p>This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Witchery White Shirt Campaign in support of the Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation (OCRF).</p> <p>During the campaign, 100 per cent of gross proceeds from the shirts sold go to OCRF.</p> <p>The campaign is a fundraising success, raising more than $10 million for the foundation throughout the past 10 years.</p> <p>The campaign also raises awareness around the statistic that a woman dies of the disease every 10 hours.</p> <p>This is not the first time Armytage has received criticism in the last month, with protestors <a href="http://www.oversixty.com.au/entertainment/tv/2018/04/protesters-highjack-sunrises-live-commonwealth-games-coverage/" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">appearing in the background of<em> Sunrise</em></span></strong></a> on their Commonwealth Games set on April 10 on the Gold Coast.</p> <p>The protest followed a <em>Sunrise</em> segment on Aboriginal adoption, that some believe descended into “blatant racism”.</p> <p>The protestors, standing on the Gold Coast beach backdrop, screamed at Armytage, saying they were “coming for her in her dreams” and that they were going to “write a letter and get her fired”. </p>

Australian family attacked by pirates on sailing trip

<p>An Australian family travelling around the world on a sailing trip has reportedly been attacked by pirates off the coast of Yemen.</p> <p><a href="https://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>The Daily Telegraph</strong></em></span></a> reports Louise Turner, her husband Lachin and their two young children were sailing in what they believed to be a safe corridor when they were approached by the rouge vessels.</p> <p>“We were essentially sitting ducks,” Ms Turner told the paper.</p> <p>“We were at the wrong place at the wrong time. We were completely vulnerable.”</p> <p>The family was reportedly stalked by the pirate skiff for about four hours, with more vessels approaching them with intermediary tactics designed to halt their progress.</p> <p>The vessels continued to follow and Ms Turner grew terrified for the safety of her children Siara, 11, and Kai, 4, issuing a frantic mayday call of “imminent pirate attack”.</p> <p>As Ms Turner operated the catamaran and her husband frantically manned the engine, the mayday was received by a container ship and passed onto warships patrolling the area.</p> <p>The pirates reportedly “looked eerily focused as they completed their reconnaissance.”</p> <p>“Effectively they were shepherding us away from the closest vessel that could assist us,” Ms Turner said.</p> <p><iframe src="https://www.facebook.com/plugins/post.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2FMERCHANTNAVAL.OFFSHORE%2Fposts%2F1812515665475982&width=500" width="500" height="519" style="border: none; overflow: hidden;" scrolling="no" frameborder="0" allowtransparency="true"></iframe></p> <p><span>With things looking decidedly grim, the family was relieved to receive a radio message advising a helicopter from a Japanese warship was on its way. </span></p> <p><span>The Turners changed course to meet up with the warship, but not without more intimidation from the pirates who remained close. </span></p> <p><span>Ms Turner said: “This was it for us. Attack imminent. Simply put, we could not possibly prevent them boarding us. But fate intervened and we believe it was only by minutes that the appearance of two warships on the horizon thwarted the attack.”</span></p> <p><span>The Turners managed to make it to the friendly vessel and refuel, but are thanking their lucky stars the attack wasn’t a lot worse. </span></p> <p><span>“We are incredibly lucky that we were not attacked, however, the threat was all too real,” Ms Turner said, with the family now back home safe.</span></p> <p><span>“This has been a sobering and frightening experience.”</span></p> <p><em>Hero image credit: The Daily Telegraph</em></p>

Captain makes terrifying announcement on cruise

<p>Passengers on the Sea Princess, a round-the-world cruise that set sail from Sydney, have had their world turned upside down by a terrifying announcement from the captain.</p> <p>Writing for <em>News.com.au</em>, media specialist Carolyne Jasinski described the moment the captain of the ship told passengers they must prepare for a pirate attack.</p> <p>“When 1900 passengers set sail from Sydney on a world cruise, they had no idea for 10 of their 104 days at sea, there would be a dusk-til-dawn ban on any fun on deck,” she writes.</p> <p>“Captain Gennaro Arma addressed the ship. He apologised for alarming passengers. However, the threat, he said, was real and the ship must be prepared for a pirate attack.”</p> <p>While most people on a cruise won’t consider piracy unless they find a copy of Treasure Island in the library, it’s a very real threat and one, as Jasinski explains, the crew take very seriously.</p> <p>Jasinski explains, “It was made very clear on the Sea Princess, very quickly, that this pirate threat was not something to be joked about.</p> <p>“Any remaining smirks soon disappeared as the pirate drill alarm sounded and the crew was instructed to move to their designated muster stations.</p> <p>“Passengers were sent back to their cabins so they could be counted.</p> <p>“For the purpose of the drill, they needed only to remain there and be crossed off a list by their stateroom attendants.</p> <p>“They were advised to sit on the floor and to hang on to hand rails in case the ship had to manoeuvre away from pirate ships.”</p> <p>As a precautionary measure, the captain enforced a 10-day blackout on night-time entertainment, and the level of tension on the ship quickly rose.</p> <p>She writes, “For the 10-day blackout, there was a weird kind of excitement. Once aware of and alerted to the prospect of pirates, we watched vessels more carefully.</p> <p>“A fishing boat was not looked at the same way. It was no longer an interesting speck on the horizon. Fake Aldi shut down after lengthy five-year battle

<p>The no-love-lost war for shopper’s dollars has seen another casualty, as an imitation Aldi in Canada finally announced it would be shutting its doors after a five-year battle.</p> <p>Mike Hallett, the owner of the store which has developed a cult following for selling Aldi-owned products, finally admitted defeat in his battle with the German retailer.</p> <p>He said, “It’s been a long time coming. The prospect of going to trial against a major corporation when you’re one guy — you get lots of opinions from lawyers telling you: ‘Run.’”</p> <p>Hallett’s store, Pirate Joe’s, opened in Vancouver in 2012, and quickly gathered a fan base for selling Aldi-owned products which weren’t available in the region.</p> <p>Aldi wasn’t happy, but as Hallett told the <a href="http://www.bbc.com/" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>BBC</strong> </em></span></a>last year, “This is completely legal. When you’re sued by your supplier that’s like weaponised uncertainty. Basically, your supplier hates your guts. Then people would come up to me and thank me for doing it. That was the curse; we had so many people who loved what we do but it was devilishly hard to do.”</p> <p>While Hallett might have shut up shop, numerous Canadians who channelled their rage towards Aldi on social media including one former shopper who wrote, “Hey Trader Joe’s, aka Aldi. As is customary, after you shut down the competition, you’re supposed to announce you are building stores in every major city in Canada... Hello?!”</p> <p>What’s your take?
