Brittany Higgins shares emotional pregnancy update

Brittany Higgins has shared an emotional announcement about her unborn baby, revealing the baby has been given the all-clear after blood tests suggested he might have a genetic disorder.

While sharing the details of her first pregnancy, Higgins revealed in a lengthy Instagram post that an amniocentesis had confirmed her baby was doing well after blood tests raised alarm bells.

“Given everything going on — it’s an understatement to say that we’ve had an acutely stressful pregnancy,” she said.

“A fortnight ago, David and I had the shock of our lives after the midwife told us halfway through my second trimester my blood test had raised some red flags."

“Our baby had a high probability of a genetic disorder – which wouldn’t have mattered to us – but scarily could mean he may be incompatible with life outside of the womb. After an amniocentesis and a seemingly never ending wait our prayers were answered. We love you lots and are so thankful for your support.”

Jessica Mauboy's exciting family news

Jessica Mauboy is set to become a first-time mum, with reports saying the Aussie singer is pregnant with her first child.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the former Voice Australia coach and her husband Themeli Magripilis will welcome their first baby next year.

The reports claim that Mauboy only broke the happy news to her friends and family last week, with the singer believed to be five months along in her pregnancy.

The 35-year-old singer married her husband at a stunning ceremony in Darwin after meeting when they were both 18 at a nightclub in the Northern Territory capital.

Reflecting on her nuptials in an interview earlier this year, Mauboy told Australian Women's Weekly that the ceremony celebrated both her Indigenous and Indonesian heritage and Magripilis’ Greek heritage.

“It was a very cultural celebration … a cultural fusion. There were moments when Greek music started and Them was there leading everyone in the dance, because he grew up dancing and still dances traditionally,” Mauboy said.

“My dad got everyone up with his traditional (Indonesian) dancing and a lot of our uncles and aunties got up on the guitar and started singing hymns. I was thinking: ‘This is (what it’s all about).'"

Earlier this year, Mauboy revealed to The Daily Telegraph the pair almost split at one point, admitting, “We were eight years in a long distance relationship and we felt really apart, we weren’t doing things together, we weren’t creating a future.”

The singer said the pair eventually worked it out after they moved in together.

Sophie Delezio reflects on pregnancy journey

Sophie Delezio has reflected on her incredible story of survival as she prepares to become a mother.

After defying death twice before the age of five, the now 23-year-old and her fiancé are getting ready to welcome their baby boy to the world.

"[I'm feeling] very good, very pregnant, very tired, very much over this, but loving every part of the journey," Delezio told A Current Affair.

Delezio faced her first challenge in December 2003 when a car crashed into her daycare centre, where the two-year-old was taking a nap.

She suffered third-degree burns to 90 per cent of her body and lost both feet, one of her hands and her ear.

Three years later, young Sophie faces another challenge, as she recalled, "So I was crossing the road and a driver got blinded by the sun and hit my stroller, flew 18 meters in the air, landed head first on the pavement."

"Yeah, simple as that, again, freak accident."

Despite facing so much at a young age, Sophie remains optimistic about the future.

"I've made peace with it. There's nothing I can do to change it, no matter what," she said of her ordeals.

Sophie and her fiancé are now getting ready for another big change in their life, as Salerno shared he was "the happiest I've ever been" to be welcoming a child with his partner.

"I'm over the moon," he said.

"I think once she came back from [studying in] London and we started catching up, even our friendship blossomed even more," Joseph said.

"I just knew I'm not gonna wait another year or two to figure it out. I just knew what I wanted."

Delezio said she anticipated her other half to be "a beautiful dad", as she said, "He is really a very kind and caring guy and I know he's just going to look after little bubba so well."

Sophie is partnering with DrinkWise throughout her pregnancy ahead of International Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Awareness Day on September 9th, saying, "I think supporting a cause like fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, it is 100 per cent preventable."

"It's not impacting your life, it's impacting someone else's life, at the end of the day your child, coming into this world, and I think, give them the best opportunity possible to thrive."

Sophie is pleased to be joining DrinkWise and key medical practitioners to advise women on the importance of abstaining from alcohol when planning a pregnancy, during pregnancy and while breastfeeding. What’s the difference between miscarriage and stillbirth?

Gita Mishra, The University of Queensland; Chen Liang, The University of Queensland, and Jenny Doust, The University of Queensland

Former US First Lady Michelle Obama revealed in her memoir she had a miscarriage. UK singer-songwriter and actor Lily Allen has gone on the record about her stillbirth.

Both miscarriage and stillbirth are sadly familiar terms for pregnancy loss. They can be traumatic life events for the prospective parents and family, and their impacts can be long-lasting. But the terms can be confused.

Here are some similarities and differences between miscarriage and stillbirth, and why they matter.

Let’s start with some definitions

In broad terms, a miscarriage is when a pregnancy ends while the fetus is not yet viable (before it could survive outside the womb).

This is the loss of an “intra-uterine” pregnancy, when an embryo is implanted in the womb to then develop into a fetus. The term miscarriage excludes ectopic pregnancies, where the embryo is implanted outside the womb.

However, stillbirth refers to the end of a pregnancy when the fetus is normally viable. There may have been sufficient time into the pregnancy. Alternatively, the fetus may have grown large enough to be normally expected to survive, but it dies in the womb or during delivery.

The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare defines stillbirth as a fetal death of at least 20 completed weeks of gestation or with a birthweight of at least 400 grams.

Internationally, definitions of stillbirth vary depending on the jurisdiction.

How common are they?

It is difficult to know how common miscarriages are as they can happen when a woman doesn’t know she is pregnant. There may be no obvious symptoms or something that looks like a heavier-than-normal period. So miscarriages are likely to be more common than reported.

Studies from Europe and North America suggest a miscarriage occurs in about one in seven pregnancies (15%). More than one in eight women (13%) will have a miscarriage at some time in her life.

Around 1–2% of women have recurrent miscarriages. In Australia this is when someone has three or more miscarriages with no pregnancy in between.

Australia has one of the lowest rates of stillbirth in the world. For those who have had recurrent miscarriages, the risk of another miscarriage is four-fold higher.

Some factors have a u-shaped relationship, with the risk of miscarriage and stillbirth lowest in the middle.

For instance, maternal age is a risk factor for both miscarriage and stillbirth, especially if under 20 years old or older than 35. Increasing age of the male is only a risk factor for stillbirth, especially for fathers over 40.

Similarly for maternal bodyweight, women with a body mass index or BMI in the normal range have the lowest risk of miscarriage and stillbirth compared with those in the obese or underweight categories.

Lifestyle factors such as smoking and heavy alcohol drinking while pregnant are also risk factors for both miscarriage and stillbirth.

So it’s important to not only avoid smoking and alcohol while pregnant, but before getting pregnant. This is because early in the pregnancy, women may not know they have conceived and could unwittingly expose the developing fetus.

Why do they happen?

Miscarriage often results from chromosomal problems in the developing fetus. However, genetic conditions or birth defects account for only 7-14% of stillbirths.

Instead, stillbirths often relate directly to pregnancy complications, such as a prolonged pregnancy or problems with the umbilical cord.

Maternal health at the time of pregnancy is another contributing factor in the risk of both miscarriage and stillbirths.

Chronic diseases, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), polycystic ovary syndrome, problems with the immune system (such as an autoimmune disorder), and some bacterial and viral infections are among factors that can increase the risk of miscarriage.

Similarly mothers with diabetes, high blood pressure, and untreated infections, such as malaria or syphilis, face an increased risk of stillbirth.

In many cases, however, the specific cause of pregnancy loss is not known.

How about the long-term health risks?

Miscarriage and stillbirth can be early indicators of health issues later in life.

For instance, women who have had recurrent miscarriages or recurrent stillbirths are at higher risk of cardiovascular disease (such as heart disease or stroke).

Our research has also looked at the increased risk of stroke. Compared with women who had never miscarried, we found women with a history of three or more miscarriages had a 35% higher risk of non-fatal stroke and 82% higher risk of fatal stroke.

Women who had a stillbirth had a 31% higher risk of a non-fatal stroke, and those who had had two or more stillbirths were at a 26% higher risk of a fatal stroke.

We saw similar patterns in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD, a progressive lung disease with respiratory symptoms such as breathlessness and coughing.

Our data showed women with a history of recurrent miscarriages or stillbirths were at a 36% or 67% higher risk of COPD, respectively, even after accounting for a history of asthma.

Why is all this important?

Being well-informed about the similarities and differences between these two traumatic life events may help explain what has happened to you or a loved one.

Where risk factors can be modified, such as smoking and obesity, this information can be empowering for individuals who wish to reduce their risk of miscarriage and stillbirth and make lifestyle changes before they become pregnant.

More information and support about miscarriage and stillbirth is available from SANDS and Pink Elephants.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “My sister-in-law announced she was pregnant at my child’s funeral”

A woman has asked for advice on how to navigate her relationship with her sister-in-law, after the woman overheard an inappropriate conversation at her child’s funeral.

The grieving mother, a 28-year-old named Melissa, took to Reddit to share the heartbreaking story of how her toddler passed away after a battle with cancer.

Melissa described the time as the “hardest in my life”, explaining how she felt she lost “a part of herself” after the funeral.

While Melissa expected her toddlers’ memorial service to be difficult, she never predicted a family member would make it even harder.

The mother said that when she heard her sister-in-law telling people about her pregnancy, she thought the move was just cruel.

“She didn't make a big announcement but more than ten people at the service 'heard' and it's what everyone was talking about. To understate it, I was livid,” Melissa wrote on Reddit.

Melissa’s post then asked social media users for advice, as she was unsure how much of a relationship she wanted to have with her sister-in-law after the stunt.

The 28-year-old shared that she had fallen pregnant herself, and was facing pressure to have a party in celebration, but she didn’t want her whole family in attendance.

“I've been working on who I want to invite, and I really don't want my SIL there,” she said.

“Besides what she did, she's a vindictive and mean person and I cannot stand her.”

“I mentioned it to my husband and he says he couldn't care less whether she's there or not. But for the sake of saving face, I want opinions before I do this.”

She asked the online forum if she would be “an a**hole” for not inviting her, addin that she would still be inviting her husband's other sister and husband's brother's wife.

“The original SIL will be the only one not invited,” she clarified.

The post was flooded with comments as many backed up Melissa, slamming the sister-in-law for her selfish behaviour.

“I wouldn't want someone like that around me. Announcing a pregnancy at a child's funeral is insane,” one said.

“Cut her off and ignore everyone close to her. You are right to have nothing to do with her. She's totally classless.”

However, others encouraged her to have an adult conversation with her sister-in-law in an attempt to mend their relationship.

“Please let it go,” one person began. “This happened on a terrible day during a bad time for you. It's possible that could be clouding how you're looking at this, she may not have been malicious at all.”

Pickle, anyone? 3 possible reasons women get cravings during pregnancy

Lauren Ball, The University of Queensland and Katelyn Barnes, The University of Queensland

From pickles and french fries to oranges and ice cream, women and other people who are pregnant report craving a range of foods while they’re expecting.

A food craving is a strong urge to eat a specific food. The intense desire to eat is not necessarily related to hunger and can be difficult to ignore or resist. Think: “I must have this now!”.

Food cravings during pregnancy are common, with studies reporting anywhere between 50% and 90% of pregnant women experience a food craving at least once during their pregnancy. Most women who experience food cravings will do so in their second trimester (from week 13 to 27), and the cravings may also be most intense at this time.

Let’s delve into the science of food cravings and what it means for the health of mum and bub.

What are some typical cravings, and why do they happen?

There’s an old wives’ tale which implies food cravings can predict the sex of the baby, with sweet foods being associated with a girl, and savoury foods indicating a boy.

This isn’t backed by science. In reality, food cravings during pregnancy are highly individual, though they typically include carbohydrate-dense and protein-dense foods. Commonly reported cravings include biscuits, bananas, nuts, pickles, ice cream and potatoes.

We don’t know exactly why pregnant women experience food cravings, but there are a few possible reasons.

1. Changes in nutritional needs

Growing a baby takes a lot of work, and unsurprisingly, increases womens’ requirements for energy and specific nutrients such as iron, folic acid, magnesium and calcium. In addition, a woman’s blood volume increases significantly during pregnancy, meaning a greater demand for water and electrolytes (in particular sodium and potassium).

Some studies suggest women experiencing nutrient deficiencies are more likely to have food cravings. This might mean women crave foods high in energy and specific nutrients based on their needs.

However, this link is not consistently seen, and many women experience food cravings without being deficient in any nutrients.

2. Changes in hunger and taste

Hormonal changes that occur throughout pregnancy may change how hungry women feel. A specific hormone called neuropeptide Y has been shown to increase during pregnancy and is associated with increased hunger.

Also, many women report foods and drinks taste different during pregnancy. Most commonly, women report an increased taste of bitter flavours such as those in vegetables or coffee, and a heightened sense of sweetness from fruits.

Changes in how foods taste combined with increased feelings of hunger may create food cravings, particularly for sweet foods such as fruits. However, studies have not been able to consistently link hormone levels in blood with reported taste changes, suggesting hormones may not be solely responsible for food cravings.

3. Social and cultural influences

Pregnant women in different parts of the world report different food cravings. For example, the most commonly reported food cravings among pregnant women in Nigeria is fruits and vegetables. Rice is the most common craving among all women in Japan, while in the United States, women seem to crave chocolate the most. These differences may be due to what foods are available, and what foods are familiar.

Popular commentary around pregnancy food cravings, and even the notion of “eating for two”, imply a biological need for pregnant women to indulge their food cravings. These sentiments make eating different, strange, or large amounts of food more socially acceptable.

Also, food cravings may normalise eating foods which may be less healthy, such as chocolates or cake. Normalising a food choice that may usually be considered a special treat can then lead to increased urges for and consumption of those foods during pregnancy.

Some women can struggle with food cravings they know are not healthy, but cannot resist. This can lead to shame and negative relationships with food during pregnancy.

Cravings aren’t a big cause for concern

People may think food cravings lead to excess weight gain in pregnancy, which can be related to poor health outcomes for mothers. But studies to date have shown that while women who experience food cravings in pregnancy have a slightly higher energy intake than those who don’t, there’s no consistent link between food cravings and diet quality, changes in body weight or size, or development of pregnancy complications such as gestational diabetes.

Some people have also suspected food cravings in pregnancy might influence the baby while it’s growing. However, studies haven’t found a link between the mother’s food cravings during pregnancy, the size of baby at birth, the baby’s taste preferences, or behaviours of developing children.

Overall, it seems food cravings have little to modest impact on the health of mothers or their babies.

When to seek help

While all women should feel comfortable to eat foods they desire, moderation is still key. Resolving sweet food cravings with nutritious options such as fruits, dairy and wholegrains may be beneficial, as well as limiting less healthy cravings such as chocolates, lollies and chips.

Particular cravings, such soil or ice, can indicate underlying health conditions that warrant treatment.

If you or a loved one is concerned about food cravings or any aspect of food intake during pregnancy, make an appointment with an accredited dietitian.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
