Some vegetables are pretty low in fibre. So which veggies are high-fibre heroes?

Lauren Ball, The University of Queensland and Emily Burch, Southern Cross University

Many people looking to improve their health try to boost fibre intake by eating more vegetables.

But while all veggies offer health benefits, not all are particularly high in fibre. You can eat loads of salads and vegetables and still fall short of your recommended daily fibre intake.

So, which vegetables pack the biggest fibre punch? Here’s what you need to know.

What is fibre and how much am I supposed to be getting?

Fibre, or dietary fibre, refers to the parts of plant foods that our bodies cannot digest or absorb.

It passes mostly unchanged through our stomach and intestines, then gets removed from the body through our stool.

There are two types of fibre which have different functions and health benefits: soluble and insoluble.

Soluble fibre dissolves in water and can help lower blood cholesterol levels. Food sources include fruit, vegetables and legumes.

Insoluble fibre adds bulk to the stool which helps move food through the bowels. Food sources include nuts, seeds and wholegrains.

Both types are beneficial.

Australia’s healthy eating guidelines recommend women consume 25 grams of fibre a day and men consume 30 grams a day.

However, research shows most people do not eat enough fibre. Most adults get about 21 grams a day.

4 big reasons to increase fibre

Boosting fibre intake is a manageable and effective way to improve your overall health.

Making small changes to eat more fibrous vegetables can lead to:

1. Better digestion

Fibre helps maintain regular bowel movements and can alleviate constipation.

2. Better heart health

Increasing soluble fibre (by eating foods such as fruit and vegetables) can help lower cholesterol levels, which can reduce your risk of heart disease.

3. Weight management

High-fibre foods are filling, which can help people feel fuller for longer and prevent overeating.

4. Reducing diabetes risk and boosting wellbeing

Fibre-rich diets are linked to a reduced risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer.

Recent research published in prestigious medical journal The Lancet provided some eye-opening stats on why fibre matters.

The researchers, who combined evidence from clinical trials, found people who ate 25–29 grams of fibre per day had a 15–30% lower risk of life-threatening conditions like heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes compared to those who consumed fewer than 15 grams of fibre per day.

So which vegetables are highest in fibre?

Vegetables are excellent sources of both soluble and insoluble fibre, along with essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

The following veggies are some of the highest in fibre:

green peas

avocado

artichokes

parsnips

brussels sprouts

kale

sweet potatoes

beetroot

carrots

broccoli

pumpkin

Which vegetables are low in fibre?

Comparatively lower fibre veggies include:

asparagus

spinach (raw)

cauliflower

mushrooms

capsicum

tomato

lettuce

cucumber

These vegetables have lots of health benefits. But if meeting a fibre goal is your aim then don’t forget to complement these veggies with other higher-fibre ones, too.

Does it matter how I prepare or cook the vegetables?

Yes.

The way we prepare vegetables can impact their fibre content, as cooking can cause structural changes in the dietary fibre components.

Some research has shown pressure cooking reduces fibre levels more greatly than roasting or microwave cooking.

For optimal health, it’s important to include a mix of both cooked and raw vegetables in your diet.

It’s worth noting that juicing removes most of the fibre from vegetables, leaving mostly sugars and water.

For improved fibre intake, it’s better to eat whole vegetables rather than relying on juices.

What about other, non-vegetable sources of fibre?

To meet your fibre recommendations each day, you can chose from a variety of fibre-rich foods (not only vegetables) including:

legumes and pulses (such as kidney beans and chickpeas)

wholegrain flour and bread

fruits

wholegrains (such oats, brown rice, quinoa, barley)

nuts and seeds (such as flaxseeds and chia seeds)

A fibre-rich day that meets a recommended 30 grams would include:

breakfast: 1⁄2 cup of rolled oats with milk and 1⁄2 cup of berries = about 6 grams of fibre

snack: one banana = about 2 grams

lunch: two cups of salad vegetables, 1⁄2 cup of four-bean mix, and canned tuna = about 9 grams

snack: 30 grams of almonds = about 3 grams

dinner: 1.5 cups of stir-fried vegetables with tofu or chicken, one cup of cooked brown rice = about 10 grams

supper: 1⁄2 a punnet of strawberries with some yoghurt = about 3 grams.

Bringing it all together

Vegetables are a key part of a healthy, balanced diet, packed with fibre that supports digestion, blood glucose control, weight management, and reduces risk of chronic disease.

However, the nutritional value of them can vary depending on the type and the cooking method used.

By understanding the fibre content in different veggies and how preparation methods affect it, we can make informed dietary choices to improve our overall health.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "Get over yourself": Sports fans call out Aussie Olympian's "privileged" rant

Aussie sports fans have seemingly turned on swimming champion Ariarne Titmus after she called out the standard of living in the Olympic village.

Titmus, who took home the gold medal in the 400m freestyle, labelled the conditions for athletes in Paris "ridiculous".

"Living in the Olympic village makes it hard to perform," the 23-year-old said in an interview on Sunday.

"It's definitely not made for high performance, so it's about who can really keep it together in the mind."

Some sports fans haven't received her comments well, with many taking to social media to accuse the athlete of whinging.

"Give me a break, why is it always the Aussies that make excuses?" one person fumed.

Another posted, "Get over yourself, remember how privileged you are to be there ... to complain is really petty."

Others argued that all the athletes in Paris are "in the same boat" so there is no point in complaining.

"Our athletes are becoming a bunch of spoiled whining Australian representatives. If you don't like your situation just leave go home and find a job!" one person said.

Another wrote, "I'm not very impressed if the competitors think that blaming their accommodation for their performance ... get over yourselves, and remember how privileged you are to have the chance to be there."

Australian Swimming head coach Rohan Taylor has also spoken about the conditions of the Olympic village, but said being adaptable is crucial for competitors in France to succeed.

"The Olympics has always been a challenge," he said. "Every Olympics I've been a part of, every Olympic Games that you see, is a test of athletes' ability to come here, compete and perform when it matters."

"It's about how you manage yourself and whatever environments are presented, whatever the beds are, whatever the food is, everybody deals with it."

"The Olympics has always been this way and that's the way it is. And that's the beauty of it."

"Pretty brutal": Peter Garrett slams Taylor Swift for price gouging tickets

Peter Garrett has taken aim at Taylor Swift, calling out her extrationate ticket prices for a place at the Eras Tour.

The Midnight Oil frontman joined 107.1 SAFM’s Bec & Soda radio show on Friday when he was informed that he was co-host Mark “Soda” Soderstrom’s favourite artist, or in other words, “his Taylor Swift.”

Garrett didn't take too kindly to the comparison, and launched into a rant about the price of Swift's concert tickets.

“I’m not price gouging like Taylor, to be blunt,” he began.

The radio hosts reminisced about attending a Midnight Oil concert in 1985 when tickets were just $15.90, compared to Swifts forking out hundreds of dollars for the highly anticipated Eras Tour.

Tickets for Swift’s Australian tour ranged from $79.90 for G-reserve tickets to $379.90 for A-reserve ticket, while also offering fans multiple VIP packages, reaching an eye-watering $1249.90 for a single ticket.

Some diehard fans were quick to complain about the lack of added value in the packages, which included premium seats with add-ons such as a tote bags, collectable pins, stickers and postcards.

Garrett continued, “I wouldn’t begrudge anyone’s success, that’s the first thing to say."

"She’s obviously touching a chord with masses of people, particularly people of a certain age group who have experienced growing up at a certain time, and what she’s singing and talking about is really ringing true with them.”

However, he also said that “the dollar end of it having looked at it from a distance, having been in this business forever, is pretty brutal.”

Garrett continued to share his disapproval of Swift's Australian domination, complaining about how five of her albums dominated the ARIA charts, booting Aussie artists off the ladder.

“She is so pervasive, she has become such a phenomenon, that she is displacing artists left right and centre. In our ARIA top 100 chart – that’s the Australian record industry chart – I think at one point in the last week or two, we only had three Australian artists in that top 100,” Garrett said.

“Not good enough! And that’s not me crying about it, I’ve had an incredible run. But I think about the younger artists coming through and it’s extremely hard for them now.”

You have packed more in the first 40 years than most. Can’t wait to see what you do with the next 40,” the 42-year-old former wrote on Instagram alongside the images.

Henderson recently debuted her slimmed down figure following a dramatic 18kg weight loss in early 2023, with the help of WW (formerly known as Weight Watchers).

Her transformation sparked rumours that she had used the diabetes drug Ozempic to lose weight – an injectable that helps to increase insulin production and suppress appetite.

The mum-of-one addressed the rumours on The Kyle & Jackie O Show.

“That diabetic medication people talk about taking, I don’t take that,” she told co-host Kyle Sandilands.

“Honestly, you can do it, guys. But I will say, I reckon [cutting out] alcohol and [frequent] exercise was a big thing. I’ve never done [that] before so that was kind of the kicker for me.”

Bickmore has also been under the spotlight with rumours she is dating Tommy & Carrie co-host, Tommy Little, amid her split from long-time partner Chris Walker.

However, Little put a stop to the rumours on 2DAY FM’S Hughesy, Ed & Erin show after he revealed he is single and just signed up to celebrity dating app Raya.

“I just can’t keep telling the apps that it’s me, because it’s so desperate saying, ‘Hey, Tinder, that’s actually me!’” Little said, admitting people kept reporting his profile as fake.

Andrew “Freddie” Flintoff is recovering from a "nasty" accident while filming for Top Gear, according to his friend Piers Morgan.

The former English cricketer, 45, was airlifted to hospital on Tuesday after receiving medical care at the scene, following a crash at an aerodrome in Surrey.

Piers said he had spoken to Freddie's family, and said the TV host is remaining in good spirits.

“I’m told it was a pretty serious crash and that Freddie’s going to be OK, but it might be a little bit more serious than first appreciated,” he told talkSPORT.

“I’m told he’s going to be OK, which is great news, but I’m also told it was a pretty nasty bang and that he’s had surgery and is recovering now and we’ll have to wait and see."

“I’ve been in contact with them privately but I just want to wish him and his family – Rachael, his wife – all the very best and I think we’re all just keeping our fingers crossed that the big man comes through all right.”

It is understood that the crash did not happen at high speed, with all health and safety precautions said to have been in place.

The health and safety watchdog said it was “aware and making inquiries” after the BBC reported the incident, as was standard procedure.

A BBC spokesperson said at the time, “Freddie was injured in an accident at the Top Gear test track this morning, with crew medics attending the scene immediately. He has been taken to hospital for further treatment and we will confirm more details in due course.”

We can pretty accurately tell when a human or dog is happy, but not so much with aggression

Humans are terrible at understanding aggressive characteristics in dogs — and unfortunately, in other humans.

Being able to correctly interpret social interactions is an important skill that allows humans to react appropriately in different situations.

But, research from the Dog Studies Research group at the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology in Germany shows while we’re generally clued in to distinguishing the nature of social interactions between children, dogs, and monkeys, we suck at identifying negative behaviour in dogs and humans.

Researchers presented 96 adults with short video clips of aggressive, neutral, and playful interactions between two individuals in three different species: human children, dogs, and macaques.

The clips included clues, such as body postures and facial expressions, but ended before the interaction took place.

Half the study participants were asked to categorise the interaction as aggressive, neutral, or playful, while the other half were asked to predict the outcome from three sentences prepared by the experimenters describing the three possible outcomes.

The researchers found that people performed better than chance for both tasks, even without prior experiences with the non-human species.

They selected the correct choice of the three outcomes in 50–80% of interactions and were most accurate in categorising playful interactions, which they correctly identified 70% of the time.

This wasn’t the case for predicting aggressive outcomes in humans and in pooches in particular. Participants rated aggressive contexts among dogs at chance level, and predicted outcomes below chance level.

“It is possible that we are biased to assume good intentions from other humans and from ‘man’s best friend’,” says first author Dr Theresa Epperlein the DogStudies Research group in the Max Planck Institute for Geoanthropology, Germany.

“Perhaps this bias prevents us from recognising aggressive situations in these species.”

“Our results underscore the fact that social interactions can often be ambiguous and suggest that accurately predicting outcomes may be more advantageous than categorising emotional contexts,” adds senior author Dr Juliane Bräuer, DogStudies Research Group Leader.

The research has been published in the journal PLOS ONE.

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. Glaring errors in fan favourite movies

You have to be a real cinema buff or at least excelled in high school English class to notice some glaring errors in popular movies.

TikTok user Don Farelli has done all the work and pointed out the mistakes left in fan favourites such as Pretty Woman, Gladiator, the 1985 flick Teen Wolf, and the 1995 movie Braveheart.

Up first is the 1990s blockbuster Pretty Woman starring Julia Roberts and Richard Geere.

In the scene, Julia’s character Vivian Ward is seen nibbling on a croissant as she tells Richard’s Edward Lewis that she didn’t go past 11th grade.

Suddenly, the croissant disappears and in its place is a pancake.

The swap in foods has been spotted a few times before and there are even unconfirmed reports from the director for the change.

"Director Garry Marshall said he liked the performance she gave in the latter part of the scene better, so the croissant magically becomes a pancake, which she began to eat as they did more takes,’ it reads on IMDB.

"While this may be the case, there is still a continuity issue. In the first scene with the pancake, she takes a second bite. In the next scene with the pancake in her hand, there is only one bite missing.

"Not only that, but the pancake with one bite missing has a different bite pattern and is clearly a different pancake."

Next up is Mel Gibson’s Braveheart, who is seen speaking to a fellow actor in a scene.

Upon closer inspection, a man in the background is seen wearing a baseball cap - which very obviously has no place in the film.

Similar to Gladiator starring Russel Crowe, which features two modern items which are very clearly not meant to be there.

In one scene, a man is seen wearing jeans which is not the wardrobe for the movie and another scene shows another extra moving a water bottle out of the way.

The final movie is Teen Wolf starring Michael J. Fox, which hilariously shows a man realising his zipper is undone and tries to cover it during a basketball game.

Don’s TikTok video received a whopping 1.7million likes and has been viewed more than 15million times.

Image: TikTok

Peak white privilege: Dramatic end to Erin Molan defamation case

And you fall far short of that by using a term such as ‘complicit in racism’,” Mr Smark said.

He went on to argue that the article was “sensational” and that the Daily Mail’s accusations and attempt to spark outrage online risked damaging Ms Molan’s career.

Bruce McClintock SC, the barrister for The Mail, made a distinction between “one racist remark” and Ms Molan’s behaviour.

He argued that one remark does not make a racist, but Ms Molan had repeatedly engaged in offensive behaviour towards different races.

Mr McClintock reminded the court of an incident during one broadcast, where Ms Molan said “Me love you longtime” in a Chinese accent, and argued that her comments should be judged by current standards of what is acceptable behaviour.

“The fact it’s a joke makes no difference,” Mr McClintock said in reference to the “hooka looka” comments.

“Making a racially based joke about people’s names is really quite disgraceful.”

Ms Molan denied that the comments mocked Polynesians and insisted it was a lighthearted joke about Mr Warren pronouncing Manly Sea Eagles player Haumole Olakau’atu’s name.

Mr McClintock noted that Mr Warren had no trouble pronouncing Mr Olakau’atu’s name during the team’s semi-final game, and that Ms Molan’s comments had knock-on effects.

“Olakau’atu was born in Guildford and is as Australian as me or Ms Molan,” he said.

“Hiding behind all this is the assumption people like Mr Olakau’atu who have ‘funny names’ are not really part of our society.”

Ms Molan is seeking aggravated damages from the publication, telling the court that the accusations had resulted in people she respected turning away from her.

She also refuted any suggestion that she thought less of people based on their race.

Image: @erin_molan / Instagram

Kyle Sandilands jumps vaccination queue then says “privilege still exists”

Kyle Sandilands has drawn criticism for skipping the 120-person queue to get his first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at Westmead Hospital on Tuesday night.

The radio host defended the move, saying he was simply using his “celebrity privilege” to jump the queue.

On Wednesday morning, the shock jock discovered live on-air that he had been called out in a now-viral Reddit penned by a member of the public also waiting in line for the jab.

“Kyle Sandilands cut in front of me in the vaccine line… Not the least bit surprised,” the post read.

When confronted with the accusation, Kyle said: “That’s right, that’s celebrity privilege right there.”

Co-host Jackie ‘O’ Henderson then asked how many people Kyle had cut in front of at the hospital.

“Probably about 70 people,” Kyle replied. “And then in the waiting room there was probably another 50 people, I walked straight through past them.

“But that is what happens when you are white, old, fat, male and a celebrity. "It's been pretty crap": Jessica Rowe opens up about life after Studio 10

It's been three years since Jessica Rowe left Studio 10 - a role she says was the "best job I've ever had".

And since then, she's gotten used to wearing many work hats.

She's appeared on The Real Dirty Dancing, released a book Diary of a Crap Housewife as well as working as an events MC and mental health advocate.

But since the COVID-19 pandemic, Rowe is struggling to find work.

“Well, I gotta be honest in my professional life it’s been pretty crap,” she told news.com.au podcast How to be Happy.

“A lot of my work has gone, it’s disappeared because a lot of my work has been talking to people, hosting events, advocating for mental health but doing that with people, with an audience.”

Rowe said the loss of work had been tough, especially because she thrives on “connecting with people”.

“It’s been hard and like so many other people you do have to reinvent yourself and I think for me I’ve tried very much through my whole life, it’s been a series of reinventions,” she said.

“But I’ve really struggled this year because what I thrive on is people, is connecting with people, having conversations.”

Speaking to former news.com.au editor, Kate de Brito, Rowe revealed that despite the many trajectories her career has taken, she never gets tired of the constant striving.

“I like to think of it not as not being a hustle,” she said. “I think sometimes in life things happen that are beyond our control but what we can control is how we decide to deal with it.

“That was a really good life lesson that my mum taught me.”

During her decades-long media career, Rowe said she had learn “what brings you that sense of joy and happiness is different” at different points in her life.

“There have been various times in both my professional and personal life where I’ve thought OK, enough wallowing, time to think what can I do, how can I find a sense of joy, what can I do that will bring me a sense of happiness and contentment,” she said.

“And I think what I’ve learnt over time is that changes.”

This ethos was what drove Rowe to depart Studio 10 in 2018, despite her popularity as host on the show.

“When I decided to leave Studio 10 I’d been there five years, it was the best job I’ve ever had in media because I think I was happy within myself,” she said.

“I loved that job, but it came to a point where I thought you know what I’m not happy anymore doing this.”

Rowe said she knew it was the right time to go “because I listened to my heart”.

“Too often we don’t tap into our heart and it could be different things for different people – it might be intuition, it might be a feeling in your gut (or) a sense of things not being right and too often we ignore that we try and be logical, rational,” she said.

“My heart was saying to me you are tired, you are juggling too much and you aren’t happy.”
