Princess Di misquote in final Crown season sparks outrage

Fans of The Crown have shared their fury over a quote from Princess Diana, after details of a pivotal scene from the royal drama have emerged.

The sixth season of the show, which will be released on Netflix on November 16th, features a key part of Princess Diana's life, in which she dedicated much of her time lobbying for an international treaty banning landmines and her support of victims.

Just three weeks before her death in a car crash in 1997, she visited Bosnia and Herzegovina to meet with affected communities.

In the upcoming episode of the show, Diana – played by Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki – tells her boyfriend Dodi Al Fayed, played by Khalid Abdalla, about the horrors of the explosives and how they are responsible for thousands of deaths.

“A man called Ken Rutherford drew my attention to it. He started the Landmine Survivors Network. After his jeep hit a landmine in Somalia he lost both of his legs,” Diana explains to her boyfriend on-screen.

Diana then makes a bold statement, likening stepping on a landmine to her ill-fated marriage to Prince Charles.

“He said to me every survivor has a date of the day they stepped on the landmine. He said, ‘Mine was December 16, 1963’. I said, ‘Mine was 29 July, 1981 — my wedding day’.”

In the scene, Dodi laughs in response.

The inclusion of the presumably fictional quote has been criticised by royal biographer and Majesty magazine editor Ingrid Seward, who had a personal relationship with Diana.

“Diana would never have said anything like that. I think it is an unfortunate comparison,” she told The Sun.

“I think the mere fact that The Crown is depicting Diana’s life and her death is exploiting her memory so they can put into her mouth anything that they want to — however distasteful people might find it.”

Seward went on to emphasise the significance of landmine awareness to the late princess.

“It was very important – it was her big thing and it was a great success too. It is something that she will always be remembered for,” she told the publication.

Sarah Ferguson quotes the late Queen Elizabeth in tribute to Lisa Marie Presley

Sarah Ferguson has shared an emotional tribute to her late friend Lisa Marie Presley at a public funeral at the Memphis Graceland estate.

The Duchess of York quoted the late Queen Elizabeth as she reminisced on her relationship with her friend, who became close after they met for the first time in the US in 2009.

Speaking at the service today, Fergie said it was a "great honour" to know her, as she described Ms Presley as "extraordinary".

She told mourners, "You talked about the flames and I think it's time that we all need to stoke our flames within to do what Joel said, which was to celebrate the extraordinary Lisa Marie."

"And I stand here with great honour because we called each other sissy and I've been with you being with you all for all your lives really. And I stand here with great honour."

She continued, "Sissy this is for you with affection. My late mother-in-law used to say that nothing can be said to begin to take away the anguish and the pain of these moments because grief is the price we pay for love and how right she was."

"Today we talk about Lisa-Marie. We look at Priscilla as a mother to Lisa-Marie, we look at Lisa-Marie and say you lost a son. Mothers losing children, there are no words for it. So today we talk about action."

"Action is the way we can go forward, we can light the flame. So for Riley, for Harper and Finley and the entire family, we march forward in support of you. All of us are with you. If you just put out your hand we will be there. I will definitely be there."

Fergie concluded her tribute with an extract that David Frost had written for his son George prior to his death.

She read, "I have had my life and enjoyed every second, but as it is, another life has beckoned. It is important to know that I've not gone, and I hope that on you all my light has shone."

Nelson Mandela's granddaughter accuses Sussexes of "stealing" famous quotes

Nelson Mandela's granddaughter has torn into Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, accusing them of “stealing" the statesman's words and using his name to “make millions”.

Ndileka Mandela, 57, slammed the Sussexes over the Netflix documentary Live To Lead, where the couple use footage of Mandela leaving prison in 1990.

Harry says in the trailer for their latest film, part of their $100million (£83million) deal with the streaming giant: “This was inspired by Nelson Mandela”.

Ndileka said she was angry that the couple appear to compare their own battles in the Royal Family with her grandfather's long walk to freedom, calling it “upsetting and tedious”.

She said: “That's chalk and cheese, there is no comparison. I know the Nelson Mandela Foundation has supported the initiative but people have stolen grandfather's quotes for years and have used his legacy because they know his name sells – Harry and Meghan are no different from them”.

She added in an interview with The Australian: “I admire Harry for having the confidence to break away from an institution as iconic as the Royal Family. Grandad rebelled against an arranged marriage to find his own path in life.

“But it comes at a price, you have to then fund your own life, I've made peace with people using granddad's name but it's still deeply upsetting and tedious every time it happens”.

In the trailer for Live To Lead, co-produced by the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Harry quotes Mandela and says: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we’ve lived”.

Meghan then appears on screen and finishes the quote: “It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead”.

The couple were both executive producers, according to the credits, and introduce each of the episodes, talking over the opening credits.

Image: Getty

She asks what she should do and where she should go, but he had enough of her antics and responded with, “Frankly, my dear, I don’t give a damn.” This is one of the most famous movie quotes of all time.

“Ogres are like onions."
Shrek (2001)
Shrek is one funny family movie that the whole gang will love. It features plenty of great one-liners, including, “Ogres are like onions.” The titular character further explains that ogres are like onions because both have layers.

“Put some Windex on it.”
My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
We don’t think the characters in My Big Fat Greek Wedding know that there are plenty of things you should never clean with Windex. Still, the main character explains that her dad believes Windex cures everything from poison ivy to psoriasis.

“Why so serious?”
The Dark Knight (2008)
Hopefully, you guessed correctly because Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight is a hard performance to forget. It’s unsurprising that Rotten Tomatoes users voted this performance as the most memorable movie moment of the last 21 years.

“Are you not entertained?”
Gladiator (2000)
Although this movie is almost 20 years old, the pop-cultural references persist because it’s so ridiculously quotable. One of the most famous lines in the movie, directed by Ridley Scott is, “Are you not entertained?” If you don’t automatically lift your arms to mimic Russell Crowe’s character, then you probably got this question wrong.

“She doesn’t even go here.”
Mean Girls (2004)
Quotes from Mean Girls are still relevant and recognised even though the movie is from 2004. People also celebrate October 3rd as Mean Girls Day because of another infamous line from the movie.

“Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”
The Devil Wears Prada (2006)
Meryl Streep is in at least 68 different movies, and her role in The Devil Wears Prada is just one of her many fantastic and memorable characters. Anyone who works in media, magazines, or fashion is especially familiar with the movie and the scene where Streep says, “Florals? For spring? Groundbreaking.”

“Remember, the Force will be with you always.”
Star Wars: A New Hope (1977)
This quote might have thrown you for a loop. That’s because it’s one of the movie quotes most people get wrong. Many people think the quote is, “May the Force be with you.” In fact, it’s often attributed to Obi-Wan Kenobi, but he never said it in the original Star Wars films. General Dodonna says this line to his Rebel troops, and later, Han Solo says it to Luke before the latter flies off to take down the Death Star. Obi-Wan does say the line in Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, too.

“Here’s looking at you, kid.”
Casablanca (1942)
Casablanca is a classic movie that people lie about watching. That might be part of the reason why it’s common for people to botch some of the famous quotes from the classic film. One that people mostly get right is, “Here’s looking at you, kid.”

“You had me at ‘hello.’”
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Although the movie does focus heavily on sports, the famous quote is more romantic than athletic. The titular character played by Tom Cruise goes on a long-winded rant to try and win back his ex, played by Rene Zellweger, but she cuts him off with, “You had me at ‘hello.’” It might not necessarily be one of best romantic movies of all time, but it’s certainly worth watching.

“They call it Royale, with cheese.”
Pulp Fiction (1994)
Keeping track of the storylines in Pulp Fiction is part of the fun of watching the crime movie. The stars include John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson, who says, “They call it Royale, with cheese.”

“Go ahead, make my day.”
Sudden Impact (1983)
Harry Callahan’s catchphrase, “Go ahead, make my day,” is something he says at the beginning and end of Sudden Impact. Callahan, played by Clint Eastwood, says this line to a robber to show that he could be easily provoked.

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”
Dead Poets Society (1989)
If you’ve ever had an English teacher impact your life, you’re also a prime candidate for watching this 1989 movie. In the film, John Keating, played by Robin Williams, is an unorthodox teacher at an all-boys prep school. “Carpe diem,” he tells his students. “Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary.”

“I’ll have what she’s having.”
When Harry Met Sally (1989)
Although Meg Ryan stars in Sleepless in Seattle and You’ve Got Mail, it’s her performance in When Harry Met Sally that led to this famous quote. After Ryan’s character does some impressive acting of her own, an extra says, “I’ll have what she’s having.”

“Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die.”
The Princess Bride (1987)
This film is based on a 1973 book by the same name, and although the book features one of the most romantic quotes, the movie quote that sticks out the most is about revenge. Inigo repeats this line more than once until he finally meets the man who killed his father.

“You can’t handle the truth!”
A Few Good Men (1992)
A Few Good Men has a few good movie quotes, but none are more memorable than, “You can’t handle the truth.” Jack Nicholson delivers this line during a heated courtroom interrogation.

“You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
Jaws (1975)
Police Chief Brody yells, “You’re gonna need a bigger boat,” during an iconic scene in Jaws after seeing the gigantic shark he hopes to catch.

“Nobody puts Baby in a corner.”
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Johnny Castle, played by Patrick Swayze, rescues Baby after her father tells her to sit away from the dance stage, in the corner. Castle takes her hand, so the couple dances and have the time of their lives.

This article was originally published on Reader's Digest.

3 quotes that defined the first Democratic debate of 2020

Dennis Jett, Pennsylvania State University

“I was part of that deal to get the nuclear agreement with Iran, bringing together the rest of the world, including some of the folks who aren’t friendly to us. And it was working.” - Joe Biden

The Iran nuclear deal took two years to negotiate and runs to over 20,000 words.

Joe Biden no doubt had a part in selling the agreement, as it was one of the Obama administration’s top foreign policy objectives. The agreement placed strict and verifiable limits on Iran’s nuclear program and even Trump, during his first year in office, certified Iran was complying before he came up with additional demands. He then withdrew from the deal.

That move convinced American allies that U.S. leadership had become as erratic as it was unreliable. It also removed the incentive for Iran to limit its ability to develop nuclear weapons and relied on sanctions to force Iran to capitulate.

Since the U.S. withdrew, Iran has responded by continuing to develop its nuclear capability, making the time it would need to construct a bomb increasingly shorter. The recent killing of senior Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani by U.S. drone strike will only encourage Iran to reconsider the steps it must take to defend itself. That may prompt Israel to again contemplate a preemptive strike.

In his speech on Jan. 8, Trump explained his rationale for killing Soleimani – a speech that included several dubious claims. I predict that his effort to force Iran to its knees will have no more success than his attempt to negotiate with North Korea to get them to give up their weapons.

If Trump then resorts to military action against Iran, he will likely find it impossible to convince anyone that his justification for acting is either credible or legitimate.

And if Biden – or any of the others on the stage tonight – become president a year from now, putting the deal back together again will be difficult if not impossible.

Amy K. Dacey, American University

“We should stop asking our military to solve problems that cannot be solved militarily.” - Elizabeth Warren

The final debate before the Iowa caucus is a challenging one for candidates. The strategic question at hand is: Do they fight with other primary candidates – or deescalate the differences that exist between them, even if small?

While the first six debates focused on domestic policy, the recent conflict between the U.S. and Iran was at the forefront of voters’ and candidates’ minds on Jan. 15.

This debate shined a light on the candidates’ foreign policy experience, in contrast with the policies of the sitting president. Most recently, Biden has been seen by Democratic primary voters as the candidate most trustworthy on foreign policy.

President Donald Trump’s administration has expanded U.S. military commitments abroad. Even after declaring “I got elected on bringing our soldiers back home,” Trump has kept 174,000 active military deployed overseas.

The focus on foreign policy in the early minutes of the debate opened a door for candidates to remind voters that their positions reinforce the Obama administration’s commitment to only send troops into harm’s way when it was necessary and with a strategy and defined goals, while at the same time openly questioning the military decisions of the Trump administration, especially in recent days.

Warren’s comments sent a clear message that diplomacy and other means, such as international alliances and negotiation, are to be considered.

Pearl K. Dowe, Oxford College, Emory University

“We are not going to have a shortage of MBAs, we are going to have a shortage of plumbers.” - Amy Klobuchar

During the debate, moderators raised the question about Pete Buttigieg’s opposition to free public college access for the wealthiest 20% in the country.

Klobuchar attempted to pivot the conversation to the economic value of education, saying that there should be an emphasis on filling blue collar jobs that are currently vacant.

This statement echoes a question in today’s society about the value of higher education and who should be able to access it. This public debate has resulted from rising tuition costs, increased student loan debt and stagnation of wages.

Bureau of Labor Statistics data confirms that, in every state, those with college degrees earn more than those without degrees. College graduates average a weekly income of US$1,173, compared to $712 for those with only a high school diploma. A high school diploma no longer offers a career path that can lead to a middle-class life.

Key members of the Democratic voting block – women and people of color – face significant barriers to closing the income and wealth gap with white men.

In my view as someone who studies African American political behavior, Klobuchar was correct that the conversation about jobs should be broader. But careers with limited mobility and low wages do not offer an effective avenue to economic prosperity. Her comments did not fully acknowledge why people are willing to go into debt in order to receive education beyond high school.

African Americans often view education not only as an avenue to a career that allows for the potential of upward mobility, but also to a greater sense of freedom for oneself and one’s family. Klobuchar’s comment dismisses this long history of deep commitment to earning a freer life.

Written by Dennis Jett, Amy Dacey and Pearl Dowe. Princess Diana quote snuck into The Crown series that you probably missed

A famous quote said by Princess Diana has been slipped into The Crown series.

The third season of the royal drama saga was on the streaming service and is exploring the British monarch in the years between 1864 and 1977.

This time period is where the world Prince Charles was well into the spotlight as a handsome, eligible bachelor. The series shows the dynamic of the “love triangle” between himself, Camila Shand and Andrew Parker Bowles.

While Lady Diana Spencer won't appear in The Crown until season four, the show has given the fans something to hold onto in the meantime.

In the scene in question, Princess Anne is asked by the Queen, Prince Philip and the Queen Mother whether she thinks Camilla would be a suitable match for her brother.

In response, the royal quips that a marriage between the pair would be fine, "as long as [Charles is] prepared for there to always be three people in the relationship."

It is a phrase that echoes a comment made by Princess Diana during her famous interview with the BBC in 1995.

The Panorama interview had royal fans all over the world watching as the Princess of Wales reflected on her marriage breakdown with Prince Charles, and the infidelity that occurred on both sides of the relationship.

Martin Bashir asked the royal whether Camilla had been a factor in the split, to which she responded: "Well, there were three of us in this marriage, so it was a bit crowded."

Princess Diana and Prince Charles split in 1992 and divorced in 1996.

Just a year later, the “people’s princess” died in a car accident.

Prince Charles and Camilla, who is now the Duchess of Cornwall, married in a civil ceremony in 2005.

Prince Charles and Camilla Shand reportedly met at a polo match in 1970, however, reports suggest they met through mutual friends in 1971 or 1972.

Their budding romance hit a wall when the young prince entered the Royal Navy, and when he returned Camilla was engaged to Andrew Parker Bowles - a man she had been in an on-again-off-again relationship for a number of years.

The love triangle, which was shown on The Crown, became more complex as it is believed Princess Anne briefly dated the army major.

Camilla wed Parker Bowles in 1973, and Princess Anne, Princess Margaret and the Queen Mother in attendance.

The couple were married for 22 years and welcomed two children together: Tom and Laura.

Prince Charles was even named Tom’s godfather and remained close friends with both Camilla and Andrew.

Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Diana Spencer in February 1981 - only a few months before their iconic wedding which was watched by millions across the world.

It's reported the prince and Camilla rekindled their romance five years later, in 1986.

In an audiotape with her biographer Andrew Morton, the royal admitted she confronted Camilla over the affair at a party in 1989.

"I was terrified of her. I said, 'I know what's going on between you and Charles, and I just want you to know that'" the princess told Morton.

"[Camilla] said to me: 'You've got everything you ever wanted. You've got all the men in the world fall in love with you and you've got two beautiful children, what more do you want?'

"So I said, 'I want my husband'. And I said, 'I'm sorry I'm in the way ... and it must be hell for both of you. But I do know what's going on. Don't treat me like an idiot."'

After the death of Princess Diana in 1997, it was not for another two years until Prince Charles and Camilla made their first public appearance as a couple.

The pair have now been married for 14 years.
