Tourist's leg amputated in dramatic rescue

A 69-year-old Lithuanian tourist is fighting for his life after having his leg amputated in an attempt to save his life after he became stuck between rocks in a Tasmanian river.

The man, who has decades of experience in white water rafting, was kayaking on the Franklin River when he slipped on a rock and his leg became wedged underwater.

Emergency services were called to the scene and quickly ran out of options when trying to pull the man from the water.

After several failed attempts to free him, and because of fears his condition was deteriorating, the decision was made to amputate his leg above the knee.

The decision was made by medical professionals and in consultation with the man, allowing him to be winched to safety and airlifted to Royal Hobart Hospital.

Tasmania Police constable Callum Herbert said the rescue efforts was one some of the most intense scenarios he’s ever seen in the region.

“Most entrapments would be more simple than this,” constable Herbert said.

“This patient was so entrapped it’s involved an amputation of a limb. It’s pretty much the worst case scenario you could get aside from drowning. He’s fallen into the river in an awkward position."

Surf Life Saving Tasmania swift water rescue technician Ace Petrie praised the man and his crew for their efforts during the challenging rescue.

“His rafting crew had done a great job in securing him as best they could,” Mr Petrie said.

Mr Petrie said the efforts to free the man were arduous, with rescuers even attempting to use the jaws of life equipment underwater.

"After we assessed his entrapment, we started off with the basic scenarios using ropes and pulleys. We weren’t budging these rocks at all, this went on for approximately 10-12 hours,” he said.

“We had to get that equipment into the water, it was quite fast flowing which made it difficult to get it stable at that time. Everyone wanted this guy out. We weren’t giving up.”

Mr Petrie added that another issue they faced was that the trapped man spoke limited English, saying, “He had a little bit of broken english, like when we were trying to pull his leg out he could say ‘My leg’s broken’ or 'broken leg; but a part from that we couldn’t take his mind off the situation by talking to him about his family or the trips he’d done. That was really hard.”

Ambulance Tasmania intensive care flight paramedic Mitch Parkinson said the man’s outlook on the entire situation was remarkable and he remained “exceptionally strong and robust” throughout the ordeal.

“He maintained an exceptionally resilient persona through the night and he tired through the morning. This was an exceptionally long mission.”

Queen Camilla "heartbroken" by death of rescue dog

Queen Camilla, who is recovering from a chest infection, has had to make the tough decision of putting her beloved pet dog, Beth, down after she was diagnosed with an untreatable tumour.

The news was revealed by Buckingham Palace in a message shared to social media, which read: "A sad farewell to Beth, the Queen's much-loved companion from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home who brought such joy, whether on walkies, helping on official duties, or curled up by the fire".

The 77-year-old royal is said to be "heartbroken" by the loss over the weekend.

Beth was rescued by Camilla in 2011, and because she was a rescue, the animal charity was never sure of Beth's age.

The royal later adopted another Jack Russell, Bluebell, soon after getting Beth, when she became patron of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in 2017, taking over from the late Queen Elizabeth II.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Royal Family (@theroyalfamily)

Recalling the moment she found Bluebell, the Queen previously told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Along I went to Battersea, and Beth appeared, and she had just been moved from pillar to post and dumped.

"We thought it would be nice for her to have a friend.
Bondi Rescue star Andrew Reid is facing domestic violence charges over a series of alleged assault in Sydney.

The 45-year-old lifeguard and reality TV star has pleaded not guilty to two counts of common assault, which allegedly took place between November 2022 and January this year on the city's North Shore, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

He also faces a third assault charge dating back to March, while a fourth domestic violence charged was dismissed.

The allegations relate to the same woman, who has been listed as a protected person under an apprehended domestic violence order against Reid.

Reid has appeared at a hearing to oppose the allegations against him.

His lawyer Margaret Cunneen told the Sydney Morning Herald that the allegations will be "vigorously defended".

"There are three very disparate allegations with a long time in between all, of which on the defence case, could be accounted for by an accident," she said.

"There is no hitting or punching alleged. His good character will be squarely raised in the question of proof in these allegations"

Earlier this year, the longtime Bondi Rescue star made headlines for helping people during the deadly Westfield Bondi Junction attack in April.

Reid, who has first-aid training, aided some of the wounded during the attack that left six people dead.

At the time, he had been locked behind a safety door in Myer, before he convinced a security guard to let him out to help a woman who was bleeding.

The hearing will continue in March next year.

Need to talk to someone? Beloved teddy bear left in airport lounge rescued by airline

Staff at British Airways have rescued a child’s stuffed teddy bear that was left behind in an airport lounge, documenting the toy’s safe journey home.

The treasured teddy was found in the British Airways lounge at London’s Heathrow Airport by nine-year-old Alex, who accidentally left the toy behind before boarding a flight home to Dubai.

After staff found the stranded toy, a new flight and boarding pass was created for Postman Bear, while members of the BA team gave the teddy the”'VIP treatment” with a journey on an airport buggy to “catch up” with the Cabin Crew Operations team in the Crew Report Centre.

Postman Bear was then taken to meet the cabin crew on his new flight to Dubai and was pictured “patiently” waiting for his flight at the gate, drinking a cup of coffee and enjoying “some great views of the aircraft” while waiting to board.

The teddy’s journey home was lovingly captured by British Airways customer manager, Ed Tumath, who sent the snaps back to young Alex to assure him his beloved bear was being looked after.

After touching down in Dubai, the cabin crew took Postman Bear to reunite with Alex and the rest of his family for a “bear-y happy reunion”.

Stuart, Alex's parent, recalled the moment they knew the teddy was missing, while praising British Airways for their tireless journey to reunite Alex with his bear.

Stuart said, “My son had left his teddy bear - huge sentimental value as he has had the teddy since birth - in the British Airways lounge ahead of the flight. We noticed as the aircraft doors were closing so nothing could be done at that point.”

“This was very distressing to my son who uses the teddy as a calming item, especially when flying. This was incredibly stressful and we feared that his beloved teddy may be lost forever.”

“Whilst onboard the flight, I took to a series of Facebook groups to seek help in finding the teddy. A member of the group contacted Ed who came to the rescue. I managed to communicate with Ed on the flight and received a picture showing that the teddy had been found, which calmed my son.”

“Not only did Ed go out of his way to find the teddy but he communicated so well throughout. He genuinely cared about the situation and worked so hard to get the teddy back to us.”

“He arranged for the teddy to board a flight to Dubai a couple of days later and a crew member handed the teddy back to us. Not only did Ed excel in his caring manner and communication, he even provided a few pictures of the teddy's journey, which my son will treasure forever.”

“My son was so relieved - words could not express how grateful we are to Ed for his kind act and dedication to getting the teddy back to us. I have been flying with BA for many years - this is the best experience I have had by far and I am overwhelmed by Ed's efforts.”

“Sometimes amazing people do incredible things and show such kindness along the way... these things matter. This meant a huge amount to my family and I, and we will be forever grateful.”

Molly the magpie carers rescue another native bird

Molly the Magpie's carers have rescued another native bird.

Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen, who went viral for the interspecies friendship between their two staffies and a magpie named Molly, shared the update on Facebook.

“Meet Charlie the vulnerable little kookaburra,” the family wrote on Tuesday.

The Mortensen's explained that Charlie had been in their care since the new year period, after a neighbour discovered him unable to fly following wild weather.

“He was found by neighbours huddling at the bottom of a tree, they watched for a day and he was all alone and too young to face the world with many dangers around including a stray cat ready for its next feed we were called over to check out the situation,” they wrote.

“Reece was in training for his wildlife licence so with the direction and support of wildlife carers specialising in kookaburras we were able to bring this little kookaburra back to our place.”

Unlike Molly who developed a special bond with the family's dogs, Charlie was rehabilitated outside, with his own kin watching over him.

“We kept him outside as much as possible so the kookaburras knew exactly where he was and could come in and feed him which they did,” they explained.

“At times we would count 14 kookaburras keeping an eye on this little one. He would try to fly and achieved short distances but needed practice with his landing.”

The family shared the update after Charlie “found the confidence” to return to the wild.

“It was such an exciting thing to witness and to be part of,” the family wrote.

It has been a wild year for the Queensland family, after Molly was voluntarily surrendered to the Queensland Department of Environment, Science and Innovation in March, when authorities found the couple were not permitted to care for native wildlife.

Over a month later, the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) announced that they would return Molly to the family with a few special conditions, including obtaining a license and meeting specific requirements to ensure her ongoing health and wellbeing.

The reunion was definitely one to remember with followers and animal lovers across the country over-joyed at the reunion.

Images: Facebook

Dramatic rescue of hikers stranded overnight in Alpine Region

In a heart-stopping ordeal captured on video, two hikers were airlifted to safety after spending a harrowing night stranded in Victoria's remote Alpine Region.

The dramatic rescue unfolded on Mount Bogong, one of Australia's highest peaks, highlighting both the beauty and dangers of wilderness exploration.

The two hikers, aged 63 and 71, had embarked on what they likely anticipated as a routine trek through the rugged terrain of the Alpine Region. However, as evening descended, their situation took a perilous turn.

Recognising the need for assistance, they reached out to emergency services, prompting a swift response from the police Air Wing and Search and Rescue Squad.

Navigating treacherous landscapes requires both skill and intuition, and it appears that these experienced hikers may have underestimated the challenges posed by Mount Bogong's unforgiving environment. Despite their best efforts, they found themselves stranded, facing a night of uncertainty amidst the wilderness.

Thankfully, the Search and Rescue Squad quickly established communication with the stranded hikers, assessing their situation and determining that they possessed sufficient supplies and experience to endure the night. While undoubtedly a daunting experience, the hikers remained composed, awaiting the dawn and the arrival of their rescuers.

As the first light broke over the Alpine peaks, a plan was set in motion to extract the hikers from their precarious situation. With precision and expertise, the police Air Wing and Search and Rescue Squad orchestrated a daring helicopter rescue operation. Against the backdrop of Mount Bogong's majestic slopes, the helicopter descended, its rotor blades slicing through the crisp mountain air.

The video footage captured the tension and relief as the hikers were carefully winched to safety, lifted from the wilderness that had held them captive. Once aboard the helicopter, they were swiftly transported to solid ground, where awaiting ambulance paramedics ensured their well-being.

Images: Victoria Police

Bondi Rescue lifeguard reunites with child he saved

A Bondi Rescue lifeguard has been reunited with a child he saved earlier this year.

On New Year's Day, Anthony 'Harries' Carroll helped save the life of eight-week-old Magnes, after the lifeguard was approached by a distraught man who alerted him to a "dead" baby who had somehow fallen and hit his head on the road.

Despite being off-duty after just finished a 13-hour shift, Harries grabbed a defibrillator kit and ran to the child in distress.

With several other lifeguards running to assist while hundreds of beachgoers looked on, Harries desperately attempted CPR before placing a ventilation mask and bag over the baby's face.

Young Magnes was eventually brought back to life and let out a cry before paramedics took over and whisked the baby away in an ambulance.

Ten months on from his miraculous revival, Magnes returned to Bondi Beach with his grateful parents to pay Harries a visit.

The delighted lifeguard shared a video of the heartwarming reunion to his Instagram account, saying the clip, "This little man Magnes I resuscitated and pretty much brought him back to life."
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; "Coca coila": Robert Irwin rescues a python stuck in a vending machine

Robert Irwin has successfully rescued a carpet python stuck a vending machine at Australia Zoo.

The young conservationist took to Instagram to share the moment he rescued the snake with the caption: "So this was a first for me…"

The carpet python was visibly stuck behind a few soft drink bottles, and as the vending machine was being opened, the 19-year-old joked, "here's our chance, free Coca Cola!"

He then got down to business, trying to coax the snake out while explaining, "what we don't want is for him to go up into the wiring.

"We don't want to make him too upset, 'cause we want him to come out nice and smooth," he added as he pulled the snake out of the vending machine.

The young conservationist sounded exactly like his late father, Steve Irwin, as he tried to calm down the non-venomous snake.

"Keep coming, mate, keep coming. Nearly there buddy, nearly there," he said.

As he examined the snake, he pointed out that the snake must have gotten injured before.

"This bloke has obviously got a spirit of getting himself caught in weird situations, 'cause he's missing the end of his tail.

"We'll relocate this guy," he assured, as the snake wrapped around his arm, Robert wags a finger at him and jokingly says: "don't go in any more vending machines, alright?!"

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

Fans were in awe at Robert's striking resemblance to his late dad, and praised him for skills.

"God you are the spitting image of the old man. Rescued sailor speaks after being adrift for months with his dog

Australian sailor Timothy Shaddock has spoken up about the three months he spent lost at sea with nothing but his dog Bella.

The 54-year-old was rescued by a Mexican tuna boat in the Pacific Ocean after a helicopter spotted his incapacitated catamaran 1900 km from land.

When he was found by the Maria Delia crew, which is part of the Grupomar fleet, Shaddock and his dog were in a “precarious” state after surviving three months without provisions and shelter.

Shaddock, who was sailing from Mexico to French Polynesia lost contact because his boat’s electronic system was damaged during rough seas.

When the helicopter first discovered him, they threw him a drink and flew away before returning with the tuna trawler to rescue him. This was his first contact with humans since early May.

Despite the horrifying ordeal and the fear of not being able to survive an impending hurricane, the sailor remained positive and said that he enjoyed being out at sea.

"I did enjoy being at sea. I enjoyed being out there," he told reporters during a news conference in Manzanillo, Mexico on Tuesday, after he safely made it back to land.

"But when things get tough out there, you know, you have to survive. And then when you get saved, you feel like you want to live. So, I'm very grateful."

Shaddock said that he passed the time by fixing things and tried to stay positive by going into the water to “just enjoy” it.

The sailor survived on a diet of raw fish after the storm knocked out his electronics and ability to cook.

“I did a lot of fishing,” Shaddock said. “There was a lot of tuna sushi.”

The emaciated sailor who survived was immediately given food, water and medication upon being rescued.

In one of the photos shared by the Grupomar, a thin and bearded Shaddock was pictured in the boat's cabin with a blood pressure cuff around his arm and a huge smile on his face despite the entire ordeal.

In a few others, Bella was pictured lying on the deck and receiving pats for being the bravest pup. Shaddock expressed his gratitude for his loyal companion.

“Bella found me in Mexico, she’s Mexican. She is the spirit of the middle of the country, and she wouldn’t let me go,” he said. “She’s amazing, that dog is something else.

“I’m just grateful she’s alive. She’s a lot more brave than me.”

He revealed that the hardest part of surviving was the fatigue, but this incident will not stop him from going into the ocean in the future.

“I’ll always be in the water, I don’t know how far out in the ocean I’ll be,” he said.

Images: ABC News/ 9news/ Facebook

A woman has been saved from waters near the Dominican Republic after going overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship.

The 42-year-old American citizen was rescued by the US Coast Guard, after she fell from the 10th deck of the ship.

The Mariner of the Seas cruise ship was about 50 km south of Punta Cana on its way to Willemstad, Curaçao, when the passenger went overboard, a statement from the Coast Guard said.

“The passenger was recovered alive and reported to be in good health, after reportedly falling into the water from the 10th deck of the ship,” it said. “No medical evacuation of the passenger was requested by the cruise ship.”

“The passenger was being kept on the cruise ship’s medical facility and later transferred to the Hospital in Willemstad, Curacao for evaluation.”

The Coast Guard said it was investigating the incident, looking into how and why the woman went overboard.

Matthew Kuhn, who was on the cruise ship with his family, told a Florida news station that he watched rescue efforts from his balcony.

“I think it was amazing to see everyone was on their balcony. Everyone was trying to help, and the crew was very receptive to everyone,” he said.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Royal Caribbean confirmed a passenger went overboard but was rescued as was being cared for onboard.

“The ship and crew immediately reported the incident to local authorities and began searching for the guest. Grandparents to the rescue in the face of soaring rents

As the cost of living in Australia continues to rise, taking rental and property prices up with it, younger generations are facing a whole new host of challenges when it comes to putting a roof over their heads.

But for one woman from New South Wales’ Blue Mountains region, the answer lay closer than she ever could have anticipated.

As 24-year-old Isis Pattison told ABC’s Hack, she had been looking for an affordable rental in her local area for months when she lost track of how many applications she’d submitted, and the entire ordeal had become “ridiculous” - until she’d taken her grandmother, Debbie, along with her.

Debbie explained that her granddaughter had been looking at a yurt that “was round and connected by a little pathway. And they wanted $370 a week for it”, and that she had been shocked by the cost.

Her solution? Offering Isis a place in her own home, so that she could “save that $370”.

And Isis’ financial boost wasn’t the only benefit to come of the whole arrangement, with Debbie noting that she’d “been on my own now for nearly eight years. It’s been very lonely and expensive on my own.”

She’d been hit hard by the cost of living crisis too, she revealed, admitting that she had been struggling to make ends meet between bills and essential home items, including everything from food to electricity and heating. At the worst of it all, the grandmother had even feared she may have to sell the home she’d been making for herself since 1981.

But things had picked up for Debbie with the arrival of her new roommate, as while Isis wasn’t paying rent at her grandmother’s, she was helping out with the bills, paying half.

“It's a big help,” Debbie said. “I'm grateful and happy that she's here. I think my standard of living is a little bit better. I've got the heating on now.”

For Isis, who intended to return to university and undertake a nursing degree, her grandmother’s generosity meant more than just extra dollars in her savings account, too.

“I think it really works for us as well, because we’ve always just had a good connection,” she shared. “We understand each other, which makes it a lot easier.”

And they aren’t the only ones who’ve turned to multigenerational living to combat the crisis, with the University of New South Wales’ Edgar Liu revealing that “one in every five people” have returned home since the COVID pandemic swept the country.

Unsurprisingly, the most common reasons behind the moves were the cost of living and related finance woes. As Liu explained, “that encompasses a whole range of things from sharing bills, or finding better value and sharing costs."

Images: Getty

I thought he was going to die, man. Last words to my family,” he said, holding back tears.

Image credit: Instagram/Washoe County Sheriff’s Office

“You wouldn’t believe all I had to do to survive”: Man rescued after 31 days in the jungle

A Bolivian man has survived 31 days in the Amazon jungle.

Jhonattan Acosta, 30, was hunting in northern Bolivia when he was separated from his four friends.

He told United TV he drank rainwater collected in his shoes and ate worms and insects while hiding from jaguars and peccaries, a type of pig-like mammal.

Acosta was finally found by a search party made up of locals and friends a month after he went missing.

“I can’t believe people kept up the search for so long,” he said in tears.

“I ate worms, I ate insects, you wouldn’t believe all I had to do to survive all this time.”

He also ate wild fruits similar to papayas, known locally as gargateas.

“I thank God profusely, because he has given me a new life,” he said.

His family said they will still have to string all the details together regarding how Acosta got lost and how he managed to stay alive but will ask him gradually as he is still psychologically damaged after the experience.

There has also been significant physical changes. Acosta lost 17kg, dislocated his ankle and was severely dehydrated when he was found, but according to those who found him, he was still able to walk with a limp.

“My brother told us that when he dislocated his ankle on the fourth day, he started fearing for his life,” Horacio Acosta told Bolivia’s Página Siete newspaper.

“He only had one cartridge in his shotgun and couldn’t walk, and he thought no one would be looking for him anymore.”

As for his encounters with wild animals in the jungle, including a jaguar, his younger brother said that his brother used his last cartridge to scare off a squadron of peccaries.

After 31 days, Acosta spotted the search party about 300m away and limped through thorny bushes, shouting to draw attention to him.

Acosta’s brother, Haracio, said that he was found by four local people.

“A man came running to tell us they’d found my brother,” he said. “It’s a miracle.”

Acosta has since decided to give up hunting for good.

“He is going to play music to praise God,” Haracio said. “He promised God that, and I think he will keep his promise.”

Police smash window to rescue two toddlers left in locked car

NSW Police officers were forced to take drastic action in a hot northern Sydney carpark and smash a car’s windows to rescue the two young children trapped inside.

The officers were alerted to the potential danger by concerned shoppers who believed they had spotted a child in the silver Honda. Upon arrival, however, the police, firefighters, and paramedics on scene were shocked to discover that there were actually two children trapped in there - one aged one, the other four.

After first trying to unlock the car and proving “unsuccessful” in their efforts, as NSW Police later announced in a statement, officers were forced to break the vehicle’s window to get inside and access the children.

The pair were reportedly in their carseats, waiting for their mother to return. She did - as police were already well into their rescue.

"A woman returned to the vehicle a short time later and was spoken to by police," the statement by NSW Police read. "Inquiries continue."

The entire incident was caught on camera and quickly uploaded to social media, with many strong opinions coming to the surface in the wake of the near miss.

Two young children have been freed from a locked car in a Sydney shopping centre carpark, with emergency services' rescue efforts captured on film | @nswpolice @FRNSW @NRMA pic.twitter.com/L2Ha1EhipX

— 10 News First Sydney (@10NewsFirstSyd) February 27, 2023

“The toddlers' mother reportedly returned to the car in a distressed state as the scene unfolded,” 10News tweeted. “Paramedics assessed the boy and girl at the scene, with neither requiring significant medical attention.”

“Hopefully she was charged,” replied one woman.

“Why are parents still doing this?” questioned another.

And while many called for the mother to be charged for her actions, some were not so quick to condemn her, instead suggesting that the situation was blown out of proportion.

“In a ventilated garage ... not in the open sun. Turns out the kids were fine ... if not traumatised by the police actions that saw windows being smashed and glass splinters flying everywhere,” complained one. “Nothing like an overreaction on a slow news day!”

“Underground carpark, 26 deg (max) outside, no treatment required,” agreed another. “Yeah, not ideal but really no danger, yeah? Couldn't the NRMA guy get in less dramatically?”

While the act may seem unnecessary to some, after the recent tragedy that saw a three-year-old boy lose his life when left inside a blisteringly hot car, to many it was the right move to prioritise the children.

Of the latest incident, NRMA’s Peter Khoury told Yahoo News Australia about the number of children being left in cars, and how they consider it to be “alarming”.

"January this year we rescued 213 children, it was the highest month in five years," he explained. "And 2022 was the highest in 10 years considering both children and pets [4267]."

"The overwhelming majority of those cases are accidental where people lock their keys in the car with their child and call us frantically."

He went on to explain that there are a few possible reasons for the increase in cases. One being that perhaps the Covid-19 pandemic had people preferring to keep children and pets in the car rather than risking exposure outside. And the other being the weather, with Khoury stating “we didn’t have a particularly hot 2022 and so because of that people thought 'well, it’s not hot, it's not an issue'. Whereas we tell people that regardless of the weather, it's not safe to leave children in vehicles.”

Images: 7News
