World's oldest practicing doctor shares his secrets to a long life

While most people slow down with age, Dr Howard Tucker has spent more than a century proving that passion and purpose are the best medicine.

At 102 years old, the American neurologist has lived a life so extraordinary it earned him a Guinness World Record as the oldest practicing doctor – an honour he received just before turning 99. Though he officially hung up his white coat at 100, Tucker remains as active and engaged as ever.

Today, he lectures future physicians at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio, and consults on medico-legal cases – work made possible by a law degree he earned at 67. His message? Retirement is not a requirement.

“Retirement, I think, is the enemy of longevity,” Dr Tucker recently told Al Roker on NBC’s Today. “You have to have some purpose in life and get up in the morning and know what you’re about.”

Even after the hospital where he worked shut its doors in 2022, ending his medical practice at 100, Tucker hasn’t ruled out returning to clinical work. “If it wasn’t for the closure, I’d absolutely still be seeing patients,” he told People. “Nobody wants me at my age – but I’ll keep trying.”

His enthusiasm for life has captured the public imagination, especially through What’s Next, a documentary about his life produced by his grandson. The film has gone viral on TikTok, turning the centenarian into an unexpected social media sensation.

Dr Tucker credits his longevity not just to good genes – his parents lived to 84 and 96 – but to lifestyle choices. “Heredity and family history of longevity is a healthy start,” he wrote in his Guinness World Record submission. “However, it must be supported by moderation of nutrition, alcohol and happiness.”

His daily routine reflects that philosophy. He snowshoes in the winter, walks on the treadmill for at least four kilometres a day, and eats a mostly clean diet – fruit and cereal in the morning, fish and vegetables at night. Lunch is often skipped to maintain mental clarity. Dessert, however, is a staple – typically fruit or ice-cream, enjoyed with his wife of over 70 years.

And while he rarely drinks, he allows himself the occasional martini. One thing he’s always avoided: cigarettes.

Dr Tucker also says its important to keep the brain stimulated. “If they retire from their work, they should at least do something as a hobby,” he told Today. “You need a stimulus for the brain daily.”

Science backs him up. Research shows that ongoing learning, social connection, and a sense of purpose contribute to mental acuity and longevity. Tucker’s life is a blueprint for all three. He remains close to his four children and 10 grandchildren and is an avid sports fan.

Despite a fall in his late 80s that ended his skiing days with a broken neck, Tucker hasn’t let injury slow him down. Instead, he’s adapted, always finding new ways to stay active.

With his 103rd birthday on the horizon in July, Dr Tucker says he isn’t concerned about the end. “I never think of death,” he said. “To be alive is to know that you’re going to die because life is a fatal disease. And so I live it.”

For a man who’s devoted his life to healing others, Dr Howard Tucker’s greatest lesson might be how to truly live.

Images: Instagram

Man charged with murder over house fire that killed 80-year-old

A 50-year-old man has been arrested and charged with murder following a deadly house fire that claimed the life of an 80-year-old man in Sydney’s inner west.

Emergency services were called to the scene of the ferocious blaze on Irrara Street in Croydon at around 4am on Wednesday. The fire was so intense that it caused the roof of the single-storey brick home to collapse, forcing firefighters to retreat as they battled the flames.

The body of Ted Grantham, 80, was found inside the property. He has been remembered by loved ones as a gentle and devoted family man who dedicated his life to music and service in the church, where he played the organ.

Following the fire, a major police operation was launched to locate a man who also lived at the residence and was related to the victim. He was tracked down overnight in Woy Woy, on the NSW Central Coast, and was found to be carrying a concealed machete at the time of his arrest.

The man has since been charged with murder.

“This has been an intensive few hours to locate a man we believe can assist with our inquiries into what we allege is a suspicious fire,” said Superintendent Christine McDonald. “It really is tragic.”

An elderly woman, believed to have left the home about three hours before the fire began, is also assisting police with their investigation. Authorities have confirmed that the victim, the arrested man, and the elderly woman are all related.

Six fire trucks and nearly two dozen firefighters responded to the emergency, gaining entry through the back of the property due to the “intense” flames engulfing the front of the house. Video footage taken after the blaze shows the roof collapsed and extensive fire damage throughout the home.

Superintendent McDonald said police are in contact with devastated family members. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fire continue.

Images: Facebook

Alan Alda shares health update on battle with Parkinson's

Beloved TV icon Alan Alda has shared a candid and characteristically humorous update on his ongoing battle with Parkinson’s disease, a condition he was diagnosed with in 2015.

“Making progress,” Alda, 89, quipped to People. “I didn’t say in which direction.”

The Emmy-winning actor, best known for his role as Hawkeye Pierce on the long-running hit series MASH, continues to embrace his trademark wit and optimism, even as the neurological disease increasingly shapes his daily life.

Alda described the progression of Parkinson’s as turning what was once a “part-time job” into “almost a full-time job”, yet he remains determined to find joy and humour in each day. “It keeps me always looking for the funny side,” he said.

Living with Parkinson’s isn't Alda's only neurological challenge – he also has prosopagnosia, or face blindness, which prevents him from recognising even familiar faces. Despite this, Alda maintains a playful spirit, saying each day is about “finding a new way to do something”, likening it to a daily game.

Though his health has prompted some lifestyle adjustments, Alda hasn't stepped away from the screen entirely. He recently appeared in Netflix’s new series adaptation of The Four Seasons, a modern reimagining of the 1981 film he originally wrote, directed and starred in. The show, led by Tina Fey, has already been renewed for a second season. Alda appeared in a new role, playing the father of Anne, rather than reprising his original character, the high-strung lawyer Jack.

In a video message posted on X (formerly Twitter), Alda congratulated Fey on the show's success. “Last week her new series The Four Seasons was number one on Netflix worldwide,” he said. “Tina, I knew you'd take the movie that I wrote and directed all those years ago and do something wonderful with it – and you have.”

Beyond his professional life, Alda continues to celebrate a remarkable personal journey with his wife of 68 years, Arlene, 92. It was Arlene who first noticed an early symptom of Parkinson’s – the absence of Alda’s usual arm swing while walking – a subtle sign of the disease’s characteristic muscle stiffness.

Despite the challenges, Alda remains a powerful example of strength, humour and creativity in the face of adversity – a role he seems to play as effortlessly off-screen as he has for decades on it.

Images: Instagram

Albanese shares poignant moment with the Pope

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late mother during a meeting with newly inaugurated Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican, describing the encounter as a deeply personal moment.

Following the pope's inauguration mass at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome on Sunday, Albanese was among a select group of world leaders ushered inside the basilica to greet the Catholic leader.

“I spoke to him about my mother who would be, I’m sure, looking down from heaven with the biggest smile she’s ever had,” Albanese told reporters after the event.

Raised in a housing commission flat in Sydney by his single mother, Albanese has frequently spoken about her influence on his life and values. His meeting with Pope Leo XIV appeared to be a particularly poignant occasion for the prime minister, given his Catholic upbringing.

The Vatican gathering also provided an opportunity for Albanese to engage with fellow global leaders, including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Anthony Albanese (@albomp)

According to reports, von der Leyen used the meeting to raise the possibility of enhancing security ties between the European Union and Australia, proposing arrangements similar to existing partnerships with Japan and South Korea.

Albanese was said to be cautious but receptive to the idea, indicating a willingness to explore closer cooperation through potential joint military exercises and other strategic initiatives.

The talks come amid ongoing negotiations between Australia and the EU over a long-anticipated free trade agreement, which remains unresolved. Mother charged with murder after deadly house fire kills three children

A 36-year-old Queensland mother has been charged with multiple counts of murder after a devastating house fire in Toowoomba claimed the lives of three of her children, in what police believe was a deliberately lit blaze.

The fatal fire broke out just after midnight last Wednesday at the family's home in Harristown, engulfing the property before emergency services could bring it under control. When fire crews arrived, the house was already consumed by flames.

Tragically, a young boy was found dead near the front door of the home. His two sisters, also young children, were rescued from the fire in critical condition and rushed to Queensland Children’s Hospital. Despite efforts to save them, both girls later died after being taken off life support.

Queensland Police allege the children’s mother intentionally started the fire. In a statement on Tuesday, police confirmed she has been charged with three counts of murder (domestic violence offence), three counts of attempted murder (domestic violence offence), and one count of arson.

Two other children survived the blaze, as did the woman’s 34-year-old partner. Investigators have ruled out the involvement of any other suspects, though police say the investigation remains ongoing.

“This is an incredibly tragic incident that has deeply affected the community,” a police spokesperson said. “Our thoughts are with the surviving family members and all those impacted by this devastating loss.”

The woman is expected to appear in court as the legal process continues.

Images: 7 News / Facebook

Bindi shares heartbreaking update from hospital bed

Beloved Aussie conservationist Bindi Irwin has updated fans following a recent health scare that saw her rushed to hospital during a trip to Las Vegas. The 26-year-old was in the city to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala Dinner, held in honour of her late father, when she was suddenly hospitalised.

In a heartfelt video recorded from her hospital bed, Irwin addressed her concerned followers, expressing gratitude for the outpouring of support she’s received.

“Hey guys, Bindi here. I just wanted to thank you so much for your incredible well wishes. I just got out of surgery about an hour ago,” she said in the clip, visibly groggy but smiling.

Irwin revealed the extent of her medical ordeal, explaining that doctors had removed her appendix and discovered 14 new endometriosis lesions, which were also excised. Additionally, surgeons repaired a hernia during the operation.

“I’m sorry if I’m a little out of it in this video,” she said, “but I just wanted you to know that I’m on the road to recovery one step at a time and I am so lucky to have so much love in my life from my beautiful family.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin)

Her younger brother, Robert Irwin, 21, confirmed that Bindi’s appendix had ruptured, calling the situation an unexpected shock for the family. Speaking from the gala event, where he stepped in for his sister, he told reporters: “She’s going to be OK, but surgery – out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them.”

This is not the first time Irwin has opened up about her health. In March 2023, she publicly shared her struggle with endometriosis, a painful condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often causing chronic pain and fatigue. At the time, she underwent surgery and disclosed that doctors had removed 37 lesions and a large ovarian cyst, commonly referred to as a “chocolate cyst”.

“Going in for surgery was scary but I knew I couldn’t live like I was,” she said last year. “Every part of my life was getting torn apart because of the pain.”

She also recalled the sobering words of her doctor post-operation: “How did you live with this much pain?”

Bindi’s family has rallied around her once again, with brother Robert writing under her latest post, “Stay strong Bindi! Love you!” Her husband of five years, Chandler Powell, also commented: “Strongest person I know.”

Image: Instagram

Older Australians are also hurting from the housing crisis. Where are the election policies to help them?

It would be impossible at this stage in the election campaign to be unaware that housing is a critical, potentially vote-changing, issue. But the suite of policies being proposed by the major parties largely focus on young, first home buyers.

What is glaringly noticeable is the lack of measures to improve availability and affordability for older people.

Modern older lives are diverse, yet older people have become too easily pigeonholed. No more so than in respect to property, where a perception has flourished that older people own more than their fair share of housing wealth.

While the value of housing has no doubt increased, home ownership rates among people reaching retirement age has actually declined since the mid-1990s.

Older people can also face rental stress and homelessness – with almost 20,000 homeless people in Australia aged over 55. Severe housing stress is a key contributing to those homelessness figures.

It’s easy to blame older Australians for causing, or exacerbating, the housing crisis. But doing so ignores the fact that right now, our housing system is badly failing many older people too.

No age limits

Owning a home has traditionally provided financial security for retirees, especially ones relying on the age pension. This is so much so, that home ownership is sometimes described as the “fourth pillar” of Australia’s retirement system.

But housing has become more expensive – to rent or buy – for everyone.

Falling rates of home ownership combined with carriage of mortgage debt into retirement, restricted access to shrinking stocks of social housing, and lack of housing affordability in the private rental market have a particular impact on older people.

Housing rethink

Housing policy for older Australians has mostly focused on age-specific options, such as retirement villages and aged care. Taking such a limited view excludes other potential solutions from across the broader housing system that should be considered.

Furthermore, not all older people want to live in a retirement village, and fewer than 5% of older people live in residential aged care.

During my Churchill Fellowship study exploring alternative, affordable models of housing for older people, I discovered three cultural themes that are stopping us from having a productive conversation about housing for older people.

Australia’s tradition of home ownership undervalues renting and treats housing as a commodity, not a basic need. This disadvantages older renters and those on low income.

There’s a stigma regarding welfare in Australia, which influences who is seen as “deserving” and shapes the policy responses.

While widely encouraged, “ageing-in-place” means different things to different people. It can include formal facilities or the family home that needs modifications to make it habitable as someone ages.

These themes are firmly entrenched, often driven by policy narratives such as the primacy of home ownership over renting. In the past 50 years or so, many have come to view welfare, such as social housing, as a last resort, and have aimed to age in their family home or move into a “desirable” retirement village.

Variety is key

A more flexible approach could deliver housing for older Australians that is more varied in design, cost and investment models.

The promises made so far by political parties to help younger home buyers are welcome. However, the housing system is a complex beast and there is no single quick fix solution.

First and foremost, a national housing and homelessness plan is required, which also involves the states and territories. The plan must include explicit consideration of housing options for older people.

Funding for housing developments needs to be more flexible in terms of public-private sector investment and direct government assistance that goes beyond first home buyer incentives.

International models

For inspiration, we could look to Denmark, which has developed numerous co-housing communities.

Co-housing models generally involve self-managing communities where residents have their own private, self-contained home, supported by communal facilities and spaces. They can be developed and designed by the owner or by a social housing provider. They can be age-specific or multi-generational.

Funding flexibility, planning and design are key to their success. Institutional investors include

so-called impact investors, who seek social returns and often accept lower financial returns

community housing providers

member-based organisations, such as mutuals and co-operatives.

Government also plays a part by expediting the development process and providing new pathways to more affordable ownership and rental options.

Europe is also leading the way on social housing, where cultural attitudes are different from here.

In Vienna, Austria, more than 60% of residents live in 440,000 socially provided homes. These homes are available for a person’s entire life, with appropriate age-related modifications permitted if required.

At over 20% of the total housing stock, social housing is also a large sector in Denmark, where the state and municipalities support the construction of non-profit housing.

Overcoming stereotyes

Our population is ageing rapidly, and more older people are now renting or facing housing insecurity.

If policymakers continue to ignore their housing needs, even more older people will be at risk of living on the street, and as a result will suffer poor health and social isolation.

Overcoming stereotypes - such as the idea that all older people are wealthy homeowners - is key to building fairer, more inclusive solutions.

This isn’t just about older Australians. It’s about creating a housing system that works for everyone, at every stage of life.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. "First time I've really cried": Star shares sad family news

Christina Applegate is mourning the loss of her father, Robert "Bob" Applegate, who passed away last week. The 53-year-old actress shared the heartbreaking news during an emotional episode of her podcast MeSsy, which she co-hosts with fellow actress Jamie Lynn Sigler.

Applegate broke down in tears as she revealed her father had died just a week earlier, marking the first time she publicly grieved his passing.

"You're probably wondering why I'm crying right now, I'm sorry," Applegate said through tears. "My dad just passed away a week ago. This is the first time I've really cried."

Struggling to hold back emotion, the Dead to Me star admitted that she had been suppressing her grief. "I think kind of, like, I wasn't allowing myself to have that yet. [I was] too busy with this, too busy with that."

Applegate hinted that her father's death followed an illness, though she did not share specific details. “We knew he was going to die," she said. "Is that an excuse for not feeling? Because you know that someone's gonna go, and you've said your goodbyes?”

The episode of MeSsy centreed on a conversation about grief with guest JoAnna García Swisher. Sigler, aware of how raw the topic might be, warned that the discussion could be "triggering" for Applegate. At the time, Applegate believed she would be able to handle it – but as the recording unfolded, her sadness surfaced.

“I thought I was going to be OK, and I’m not,” she said. “I’m insanely sad.”

Christina Applegate, the only child of Bob Applegate and actress Nancy Priddy, has largely kept her family life out of the spotlight. However, she and her father did share a public moment together in 2013 on TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are, exploring their family’s roots.

Bob Applegate’s passing comes during an already difficult chapter in Christina’s life. In 2021, she was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She has spoken candidly about her battle with the illness, revealing on a recent episode of Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert that she has “30 lesions” on her brain.

“My biggest one is behind my right eye, so my right eye hurts a lot,” she shared.

Images: Instagram

Bruce Willis' daughter shares touching message on his 70 birthday

Bruce Willis, the beloved Hollywood icon known for his legendary roles in Die Hard and Pulp Fiction, is celebrating his 70th birthday! Despite his ongoing battle with frontotemporal dementia, Willis’s family remains steadfast in their love and support, ensuring that this milestone is filled with warmth and joy.

His eldest daughter, Rumer Willis, took to Instagram ahead of the celebration, encouraging fans to send birthday wishes to her father. “He’s doing great, thank you for asking,” she shared during a Q&A session. “It is actually his 70th birthday tomorrow, so please wish my papa a big happy birthday.”

The House Bunny actress has previously spoken about her father’s health, speaking on Loose Women earlier this year, when she expressed her gratitude for their strong familial ties. “Because my family, we’re all so close, I think what’s so beautiful is the way that we rally around each other. (It’s) so lovely because we really are a unit.”

Willis’s wife, Emma Heming Willis, has also been open about the struggles their family has faced since his diagnosis. In a heartfelt interview, she revealed that Bruce’s stuttering – something he had battled since childhood – was initially dismissed as a minor speech impediment rather than a symptom of dementia.

“Bruce has always had a stutter, but he has been good at covering it up,” Emma explained. “So, when he began to experience difficulties with language, it seemed like it was just a part of his stutter. Never in a million years would I think it would be a form of dementia for someone so young.”

As fans around the world send their love and best wishes for Bruce’s 70th birthday, one thing remains clear: Willis’ legacy extends far beyond the silver screen.

Images: Instagram

Prince William shares deeply personal message over fallen war hero

Prince William has shared a deeply personal message in remembrance of John 'Paddy' Hemingway, the last surviving pilot from the Battle of Britain, who passed away on St Patrick's Day at the age of 105.

The Prince of Wales, a former Royal Air Force (RAF) pilot himself, took to social media on Tuesday to express his condolences and gratitude for Hemingway’s service.

"I was sad to hear about the passing of John 'Paddy' Hemingway this morning, the last of 'The Few'," the 42-year-old royal wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. "We owe so much to Paddy and his generation for our freedoms today. Their bravery and sacrifice will always be remembered. We shall never forget them."

Hemingway, born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1919, joined the RAF as a teenager and became one of the young airmen who defended Britain during the pivotal 1940 Battle of Britain. These pilots, immortalised as "The Few" following a famous speech by then-Prime Minister Winston Churchill, played a crucial role in thwarting the German air offensive during World War II.

Churchill’s words – "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" – have since become a testament to the bravery and sacrifice of Hemingway and his fellow pilots.

I was sad to hear about the passing of John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway this morning, the last of “The Few”. "His courage, and that of all RAF pilots, helped end WWII and secure our freedom. We will never forget their bravery and service. Thank you, John 'Paddy' Hemingway."

King Charles has yet to make a public statement, but RAF Air Chief Marshal Sir Rich Knighton honoured Hemingway’s remarkable legacy, remembering him as "an amazing character" who carried the spirit of camaraderie and bravery throughout his life.

"Paddy always had a twinkle in his eyes as he recalled the fun times with colleagues in France and London," the RAF said in a statement announcing his passing.

Hemingway’s passing marks the end of an era, but his service and sacrifice will live on in history. As the last of 'The Few', he leaves behind a legacy of courage that will continue to inspire generations to come.

Images: Instagram \ Royal Airforce

The couple, who have been together since 2022, celebrated their engagement ahead of the Paris 2024 Olympics, and now they are preparing to welcome a baby girl later this year.

The announcement was made with heartfelt social media posts featuring ultrasound photos, matching 'mum' and 'dad' hats, and an adorable gender reveal. “We can’t wait to welcome our little Norwegian princess into the world later this year,” they wrote.

The swimming community erupted with excitement over the news. Australian great Grant Hackett congratulated the couple, while Olympic champion Ariarne Titmus and fellow swimmer Shayna Jack expressed their happiness with enthusiastic messages. Isaac Cooper, British star Adam Peaty, and Dutch Olympic gold medallist Ranomi Kromowidjojo also sent their best wishes, with Kromowidjojo joking about a baby boom in the swimming world. She recently became a mother herself, while Italian legend Federica Pellegrini welcomed a child last year, and Swedish champion Sarah Sjostrom is currently pregnant.

"This might gonna be a sick Olympic final some day," Kromowidjojo quipped, prompting World Aquatics to respond, "We can’t wait for 2044 then."

Loyning, who competed for Norway at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, holds several national backstroke records and secured four titles at last year’s Norwegian national championships. Since moving to Adelaide to be with Chalmers, she has also become involved in his swimming academy.

Chalmers, 26, cemented his Olympic legacy with a third straight medal in the 100m freestyle at Paris 2024, having won gold in Rio 2016. Desperate Aussie dad sparks brutal immigration debate on Q+A

An Australian father, fearing that another rent hike could push his family into homelessness, directly challenged the federal government’s immigration policies on national television.

Morgan Cox, a father of a one-year-old, raised his concerns on ABC’s Q+A program on Monday night. The episode, broadcast from the federal election battleground of Wyong on the Central Coast of New South Wales, saw an emotionally charged exchange between Cox and Federal Health Minister Mark Butler.

Cox detailed his dire financial situation, explaining that he had recently received notice of a $180-per-week rent increase – an additional $10,000 annually. “I tried to find a cheaper place and there just aren’t any," Cox said. "What little is available, there’s dozens of people lined up. Lots of them are immigrants and they have plenty more money than I can possibly get.”

The audience applauded as he pressed the government on whether it planned to curb immigration to align with housing availability. In response, Butler expressed sympathy, acknowledging the widespread struggles with housing affordability.

“I’m so sorry you’re going through that and it’s a story we all hear right across the country, particularly in the bigger states around the big cities,” Butler said. He then noted that the government was working to bring immigration levels down to sustainable levels, but said that it is difficult to control departures of temporary residents.

“What we’ve found after those efforts is that the arrival numbers have returned to about pre-Covid levels, but we’re not managing the exits – the people returning home after studying or short-term skilled work. We’re working very hard on that,” Butler explained.

However, Cox appeared visibly frustrated, questioning why the government could not simply halt immigration until housing supply could meet demand.

Former NSW Treasurer Matt Kean, also on the panel, argued that the issue was more complex than immigration alone. “The reality is that we need more housing supply," he said. "More supply into the system means more availability for renters, for homeowners – more choice.”

He further criticised excessive bureaucracy in housing development. “There’s way too much red tape and green tape stopping housing developments, whether it’s Sydney, Melbourne, or right across Australia,” he added.

As housing affordability continues to be a pressing concern for many Australians, the government clearly faces increasing pressure to strike a balance between population growth and adequate housing solutions.

Images: ABC

Woman slammed for using GoFundMe for house deposit

A woman has been relentlessly mocked online after launching a GoFundMe page to ask strangers to contribute money to her house deposit.

Emmalee Potter, a mother-of-three from Victoria, wrote on the page that she had been "suffering a rough few years" and relying on friends and family for help with accommodation.

Now however, Potter is finally in the position where she is tantalising close to being able to purchase her new home after "working hard towards saving", but still finds herself $3,000 short of her goal.

As she wrote on the fundraising page, "I'm almost at the final stage but I'm short on the deposit so I'm calling on my village. Please help me get over this last hurdle, every little bit truly helps, a house is more than just a place to live."

"It's a foundation for the next chapter of life, a space where memories are made, and where I can really begin to feel settled. Your donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward helping me achieve this dream."

While Ms Potter thanked those who could contribute, many were not impressed at her using the platform in order to fund her house.

"No hate but you expect people to donate to you so you can buy a house?" one person asked, while another added, "I'm sorry but that is ridiculous. If we are all going to start GoFundMe accounts, I may as well start one so I can go on a holiday to Greece."

Another person wrote, "It's a tough time for everyone trying to buy a house, especially with the cost of living, so I'm kind of confused why you're asking for donations. The first paragraph of your listing says 'I'm now in a position to purchase a home' but you're asking strangers to send you money for the deposit?"

Ms Potter defended the fundraising page as she responded to one outraged commenter, writing, "It's not about 'funding me a house' it's the small amount still needed to buy something."

"Me and my kids are living in a room at my friends. Buying is actually cheaper than renting. We've applied for over 100 rentals and been knocked back. I can get the home loan and pay the repayments [I'm] just needing the last bit of the deposit."

Others were quick to defend the woman, as one person wrote, "There's nothing wrong with asking for help."
