"All or nothing": Arisa Trew shatters records to become Australia's youngest Olympic Gold Medallist

Arisa Trew from the Gold Coast has made history by becoming Australia's youngest-ever medallist, clinching gold in the women's park skateboarding final at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

At just 14 years and 90 days old, Trew has broken a 68-year-old record, previously held by swimmer Sandra Morgan from the Melbourne 1956 Olympics.

Born on May 12, 2010, Trew is too young to vote, drink or even stay at the Olympic village. However, these limitations did not hinder her from delivering an extraordinary performance when it mattered most.

Heading into her third and final run, Trew was in the bronze medal position and poised for a podium finish. However, her most impressive performance was yet to come. "My coach, Trev, he was just like, 'you've just got to go all out," she told Nine News after being crowned champion. "And I was just like, 'yep, who cares? Just all or nothing.'"

With a remarkable score of 93.18 in her final run, Trew soared into the top spot. She then faced a tense wait as the higher-qualified skaters attempted to surpass her score. Despite the pressure, Trew showed sportsmanship by cheering on her competitors.

After clinching the gold, the young athlete said, “I got told by a few people that I’m Australia’s youngest gold medallist, which is, like, pretty insane and really cool, because that’s, like, who I’m representing and, like, it’s just amazing.

“It’s just, like, super cool that I have won the gold medal because it has been like a dream. I’m just, like, so excited.”

This victory makes Trew Australia's youngest-ever medallist. The previous record had stood for 68 years since Sandra Morgan won gold in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay at the age of 14 years and 184 days. Trew, at 14 years and 90 days, has also become the youngest athlete to medal at Paris 2024 so far.

Images: Nine News

Sam Kerr's Olympic dream shattered

Matildas captain Sam Kerr has been forced to sit out of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games after still feeling the after effects of an injury she sustained early in the year.

In early January, Kerr suffered an ACL injury while on a training camp and despite her best efforts to recover for the Games, Football Australia confirmed she would continue her rehabilitation program in her home club environment and will not be available for selection.

Matildas coach Tony Gustavsson said the team has been dealing with a lot of difficult injuries, which has affected who will be eligible for the team selection.

“Unfortunately we have had a very very tough period with injuries,” Gustavsson said.

“I just got the summary sheet here a week ago and 15 out of these 37 players are either injured or just coming back from injury which means some of the players that are selected now is selected to be evaluated where they are with their physical status in the gym window and see where they will potentially be come the Olympics."

“I think everyone can do the math here and understand that obviously the Olympic roster will be based mostly out of those that are in camp. “

Gustavsson already has a clear picture of which players he wants in which positions to form the best possible team to send to Paris, but knows he may have to wait to see who is actually available as the Matildas pursue a first ever Olympics medal.

“This window will be a tough one for me and my staff in terms of evaluating players, where they are, and then the final selection process for Paris,” he said.

“With the Olympics approaching, selection is about seeing the overall picture over four years of performance and assembling the best team possible. We are pleased and confident we have those options across the pitch.”

"Shattered hearts": Culinary world mourns tragic death of Jock Zonfrillo

Jock Zonfrillo, celebrity chef and host of Masterchef Australia, has passed away at 46.

The entertainment and culinary industries are in mourning - and the fate of the hit cooking competition in question - as friends, family, and fans try to come to terms with their tragic loss.

The news was broken - and confirmed - with a statement from Zonfrillo’s family, who wrote of their devastation and “shattered hearts” as they faced life without him.

"With completely shattered hearts and without knowing how we can possibly move through life without him, we are devastated to share that Jock passed away yesterday," they wrote.

"So many words can describe him, so many stories can be told, but at this time we're too overwhelmed to put them into words.

"For those who crossed his path, became his mate, or were lucky enough to be his family, keep this proud Scot in your hearts when you have your next whisky.

"We implore you to please let us grieve privately as we find a way to navigate through this and find space on the other side to celebrate our irreplaceable husband, father, brother, son and friend."

Zonfrillo’s body was reportedly discovered by police after they were called to a Carlton address at around 2am for a welfare check.

It has been said that Zonfrillo had flown home early from a trip to Europe with his wife, Lauren, and their two young children - two-year-old Isla and five-year-old Alfie - ahead of the season 15 Masterchef Australia launch.

Production on the series had wrapped a month prior, and while it was set to premiere on May 1, it was delayed out of respect for their late host.

Zonfrillo’s co-star and fellow celebrity chef Jamie Oliver was one of the first to take to social media to share his grief with supporters, posting a picture of the smiling Masterchef judging panel alongside the caption, “I’m in total shock to wake up to the sudden death of chef Jock Zonfrillo.

“We had the best time working together for this year’s master chef, I can’t tell how good it was to work with him! Jock was very generous to me with his time and spirit in the show and for that I was really grateful … Jock will be so very missed”.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Jamie Oliver (@jamieoliver)

Gordon Ramsay also turned to social media to pay tribute to his friend, writing of how he was “saddened by the devastating news of Jock Zonfrillo's passing … sending all my love to Lauren and the family in this difficult time”.

Saddened by the devastating news of Jock Zonfrillo's passing. Sculpture worth $42,000 shatters at art fair

Pieces of an iconic sculpture are now in high demand, after the renowned work smashed to pieces.

At a Miami art fair, Jeff Koons’ well-known piece Balloon Dog (Blue), worth $42,000, was being showcased at the fair’s VIP preview night.

Unfortunately, the 16-inch-tall sculpture would never make it to public viewing, after an art collector accidentally bumped into its transparent pedestal, sending the artwork falling to the floor where it shattered beyond repair.

“Before I knew it, they were picking up the Jeff Koons pieces in a dustpan with a broom,” Stephen Gamson, an art collector and artist who was in attendance, told the New York Times.

Jeff Koons’ Balloon Dog sculpture was accidentally broken into a thousand pieces by a visitor.

The art piece was worth $42,000. pic.twitter.com/fqHTIKpT5I

— Pop Tingz (@ThePopTingz) February 21, 2023

“It was an event!” Bénédicte Caluch, an art advisor with Bel-Air Fine Art, tells the Miami Herald.

“Everybody came to see what happened. It was like when Banksy’s artwork was shredded.”

Nervous attendees crowded around the shattered artwork, curious if the destruction was part of a larger stunt.

However, as staff members stepped in to help clean the sculpture away, the onlookers quickly realised that was not the case.

“Of course it is heartbreaking to see such an iconic piece destroyed,” Cédric Boero, Bel-Air Fine Art’s district manager, told CNN.

The art collector didn’t intend to break the piece, but “this kind of thing unfortunately happens,” he adds. “That is why the artwork was covered by insurance.”

An insurance expert will evaluate the pieces of the sculpture, which have been placed in a box for safekeeping.

Art collector Stephen Gamson is among many who have offered to buy the now-destroyed artwork, with the gallery continuing to receive offers.

“I find value in it even when it’s broken,” Gamson says to the Miami Herald. “To me, it’s the story. It makes the art even more interesting.”

“This has shattered us”: BBC reality star Jasmine Burkitt has passed away

British reality star Jasmine Burkitt, known as Jazz to her loved ones and friends, has died aged 28.

Burkitt was known for her 2011 documentary, Small Teen, Bigger World, a four-part series on BBC Three where she gave viewers an insight into her life as a teenager with dwarfism.

Her fiancé, Lewis Burke, confirmed the news of her passing on social media earlier this week, per 9Honey.

“She is the most incredible human that ever walked this planet, she is the strongest, funniest, most kindest and purely decent person I’ve ever known,” he wrote on their shared Facebook page.

“I am truly devastated. She changed my life forever and I’ll never be the same.”

Burke, who was in hospital for a heart operation at the time of her passing, said Burkitt had passed away “after a long battle with a serious mental illness”.

According to multiple media outlets, Norman Burkitt, Burkitt’s grandfather, said Burke’s mother found her body in a tent where she and Burke had been living since 2021.

The couple had been documenting their life living in a tent in Bodelwyddan, Wales, on their Facebook page, Join our Journey, after struggling to get council accommodation.

“We’re a differently abled couple who happen to live in a tent outdoors, in the UK,” the introduction on their page reads.

“Although this wasn’t really our first choice, we are still determined to remain happy and productive throughout!! We are turning our homelessness from something negative to something positive.”

Burkitt’s grandfather said the couple’s situation highlighted the “desperate” housing situation in Wales, since the couple couldn’t get public housing together as they were from two different parts of the country.

“The coroner has rang us to say there will be a post mortem. They were living in this tent because they could not get a house,” he said.

He described his granddaughter as a “fantastic girl” who was “so clever and bright”, emphasising her love of art and her television success.

“She broke all sorts of viewing records at the BBC and got two awards,” he said. “This has shattered us, we have had no sleep. Everyone will miss her.”

While Burkitt was filming her show, she was a registered carer for her mother, who later died from lung and breathing problems in 2014. Both had an undiagnosed form of dwarfism, which doctors couldn’t find the cause for.

Her grandfather revealed she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had a heart valve issue that meant she was taking three different types of medication and had to have hospital check-ups every six months.

In January, Burkitt shared with her followers on Instagram that she had been hospitalised due to her physical and mental health at the end of the previous year, adding that she was “so happy to be much more stable” and couldn’t wait to be back with Burke and their dog, Loki.

Image: @joinourjourneyinsta (Instagram)

The heartbreaking moment that left Wimbledon spectators shattered

Russian tennis legend Margarita Gasparyan has suffered one of the crueller exits from Wimbledon as an old injury flared up and left her unable to continue the match.

The world no. 62 had victory in her sights as she was playing against 8th seed Elina Svitolina and took the first set 7-5 in 51 minutes. The domination continued into the second set as Elina caught up and served at 6-5 to level the match.

Margarita has had knee troubles in the past and as the second set of the match came to a close, she looked to be in increasing amounts of pain.

Her movement was impacted, and she was unable to stand up at 5-5, which led her to having to lie down on the grass court as the cramp was speculated to be the reason behind her collapse.

Gasparyan in a lot of pain now. She tried to get around the court as best she could without further aggravating her injury, but her opponent broke to take the lead at 6-5.

The physio treated Margarita’s left quad in the changeover, but there was not much more to be done.

She was in tears as she limped to the net to retire and continued to sob as she realised that her dreams of being in the third round were at her fingertips.

Her opponent, Elina, was stunned. She told news.com.au: “Honestly, I was a little bit shocked. It’s never nice to get this when someone is injured like that. Yeah, it happened that way and really unfortunate for her.

“You give her some water, because I know when there is cramps you need to drink lots of water. Your muscles are contracting, so it’s important just to drink lots of fluids.

“So that’s why I gave her some water, because no one really did anything. I mean, we were trying to help, but, yeah, it’s tough to react straight away.”

Allison Baden-Clay's parents shattered after memorial vandalised

A memorial for mother-of-three Allison Baden-Clay, who was murdered by her husband Gerard Baden-Clay, has been vandalised.

Allison’s parents Geoff and Priscilla Dickie are appalled at the incident and reported the damage to police.

“We were disappointed and upset about someone interfering with it. We think it’s a bit disrespectful to damage a memorial,” Mr Dickie told The Courier-Mail.

A metal plaque engraved with Allison’s name and a tribute was forcibly removed from the sandstone structure and found on the ground.

The memorial sits on Mount Crosby Road in Anstead, near where Allison’s body was discovered in 2012.

Mrs Dickie pleaded for Allison’s tribute to be left alone as the memorial is important for her daughter’s three girls, who were five, eight and 10 when their mother was murdered in April 2012.

“It’s a marking stone for them in the future, when we’re gone, that this is where their mother was found,” she said.

The plaque includes the message, “A loving mother, daughter, sister, sister-in-law, wife, and dear friend to all who knew her – forever in our hearts”.

Police said they were searching for the vandal, with one officer saying, “If the person who damaged it is found, they will certainly be charged.”

The Dickies visit the memorial often to reflect on their daughter’s life and tragic death.

The plaque is being cleaned and restored and will return to its original position.

Gerard Baden-Clay was convicted of Allison's murder and sentenced to life behind bars in 2014.

Glass walkway in China shatters

A group of tourists exploring a transparent walkway on China’s Yuntai Mountain were left shocked this week when a pane of glass on the newly-installed platform suddenly shattered.

Representatives for the Yuntai Mountain Scenic Spot say the crack was caused when a tourist dropped a stainless steel mug onto the walkway. Tourists on the platform took to social media to describe the event, claiming they could feel the walkway shake beneath as the glass broke.

Image credit: Lee Dong Hai / Weibo

Lee Dong Hai, a tourist who was on the walkway at the time, described the tense moment on social media site Weibo, writing, “My foot shook a little. I looked down and I saw that there was a crack in the floor. A lot of people started to scream. I screamed out, ‘It cracked! It really cracked!’ and then I pushed the people in front of me so that we could run out of the way.”

The walkway in question is suspended roughly 1000 metres above sea level. It was opened to the public in September and has been closed for repairs since the incident. Representatives for the Yuntai Mountain Scenic Spot say none of the tourists were in danger as walkway consists of three layers of glass, reportedly capable of supporting weights up to 800 kilograms per square metre.

Still, the fact that a crack was caused by a mug is not an encouraging one and probably a sign that you should wait a little while before you take a stroll on the walkway yourself.
