Bogus "rule" sees bus driver block Dad and daughter

A father from Sydney's inner west and his toddler have been denied entry onto a bus after a confrontation with the driver over an alleged "rule" about travelling with children.

Graham Cooke and his daughter Katie had been commuting on the 370 bus from their home in Newtown to Katie's childcare every day for a year, until one morning when the pair were confronted with a problem.

When trying to board the bus as normal, Graham recalled to Yahoo News that the bus driver "aggressively" asked the dad how old his daughter was.

When he explained that she was two-and-a-half, the dad claims the driver told him it was against the rules to have a toddler ride the bus without being in a stroller, and refused to let them onboard.

"He immediately goes, 'no', puts his hand up, and he's like, 'you need to get off the bus. Children under three need to be in a stroller'." Cooke explained to Yahoo News.

"He kept kind of yelling 'you need to get off the bus, I'm not driving the bus with a two-and-a-half-year-old held in your arms'," Graham said, while he tried to explain to the driver that he's done it "every day".

Cooke then quickly looked up if such a rule existed on Transport NSW, eventually finding no evidence that young Katie had to be in a stroller to board the bus.

When he tried to once again confront the driver to let them on, the driver responded that Cooke was holding everybody on the bus up.

"I'm entitled to get the bus with my toddler, I'm just trying to get to work," Cooke said. After the standoff, the dad and his daughter had no choice but to get off the bus and wait for the next one, where they had no issues getting on board.

"It was a really unpleasant experience," he said, recalling how his daughter, who ordinarily loves getting the bus, was left "upset" and cuddling into her dad.

"She loves saying hello to bus drivers. She tends to, kind of charm everybody around pretty, pretty lovely experience," he said.

"It upset me, because I just wanted to get to work and to be rejected on public transport in such a way. So it was a very unpleasant start to the day, and he was very aggressive and dogmatic about his view."

After contacting Transport for NSW, the authority apologised for the incident, as a spokesperson said passengers travelling on buses with young children and prams have the choice to seat children in their care on a seat next to them, on their lap or to have them strapped into a pram where there is space on board for it to be parked safely.

"All of our accessible buses have specific areas for prams and wheelchairs near the front of the bus, which will allow children to remain in the pram while on board if required," they said. "In that case, the front of the pram must be facing towards the back of the bus and be in firm contact with the panel, or bar behind it.

"You'll need to fold your pram or stroller and store it in the luggage rack if there is not enough space on board the bus to safely park the pram, or if the driver asks you to.

"In that case, you’ll need to seat the children in your care with you as it is not safe to stand and carry a child while a bus is moving."

Responding to the statement, Cooke said, "It looks like it's completely not a rule. Parents should be able to bring their kids to daycare. A lot of daycares don't allow you to bring a stroller and leave it there."

While the dad admits that most bus drivers are "lovely", he wants to send a message to other parents that they should know their rights travelling around on public transport.

"It's difficult enough getting around in NSW with a toddler," he said. "It makes having a child and exploring the city pretty difficult. If you're in this situation, know your rights and that you can't be kicked off a bus just because you don't have a stroller, if you're happy enough carrying or holding your toddler."

"Ding dong, the witch is dead": Daughter's scathing obituary for late mother

A woman has taken her last chance to call out her "terrorising" mother in a damning obituary.

Florence “Flo” Harrelson, 65, died back in February, although her notice of death wasn't published until August 29th by her estranged daughter Christina Novak.

The delay in the obituary came as a result of Novak not finding out about her mother's death until months after she passed.

Novak noted in the obituary that her mother, a former U.S. Marine who served as a Maine prison guard, died “on Feb. 22, 2024, without family by her side due to burnt bridges and a wake of destruction left in her path.”

Her daughter confirmed that Flo had been suffering from cancer but ultimately died of heart failure.

She went on to say that it had been 10 years since she spoke to her estranged mother.

“Florence did not want an obituary or anyone including family to know she died,” reads the obituary.

“That’s because even in death, she wanted those she terrorised to still be living in fear looking over their shoulders. So, this isn’t so much an obituary but more of a public service announcement.”

She also shared the obit to Facebook, and punctuated it with a line from The Wizard of Oz, writing, “Ding dong, the witch is dead.”

Novak told the Bangor Daily News she was “giggling to myself” while composing the obit, admitting she originally set out to write a traditional obituary, but kept drifting into sarcasm.

Novak even considered listing the ways in which her mother wronged her relatives, before stopping short but saying the reaction to the obituary was “priceless.”

"What do you say?" TV host's heartbreaking parenting plea

An Aussie TV host has shared a heartfelt plea for advice after revealing that his 12-year-old daughter has been bullied at school.

Barry Du Bois, co-host of The Living Room, shared an emotional post on Instagram admitting he is struggling to help Arabella with the bullying issue, and asked other parents for advice.

“I just watched my little girl walk out the gate of our home, a place where I know she is safe and feels a sense of security and belonging,” Barry said.

“She is heading to a place that doesn’t offer that same security, her school. As a parent, I’m supposed to protect and guide her through difficult times, but this morning, I am lost.”

“Yesterday, Arabella came home from school claiming she was sick,” he continued. "This isn’t the first time it has happened. She wasn’t actually sick but is instead being bullied again.”

Barry then asked for help from his followers on how to help his daughter, asking, “What do you say to a child when you’ve already said, ‘Don’t let them upset you. Just keep being kind. You are not the horrible things they say’.”

“She said, ‘I don’t want to be special; I just want to be liked’,” the TV star added before revealing he felt “weak, angry, confused and a little fearful”.

The touching post encouraged some of his famous friends to share their own stories of helping their kids deal with bullying.

“My mate sent his daughter to Jiu Jitsu after being bullied. Billionaire tech tycoon and daughter missing after tornado strikes

Six people, including a billionaire tech tycoon and his daughter, have been declared missing off the coast of Sicily after a tornado struck the area, causing their luxury super yacht to capsize and sink.

Four British are reportedly among six people missing at sea, including billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter Hannah.

At the time of the tragedy, 22 people were onboard and 15 were rescued by coastguard patrol boats and firefighters, including Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares.

The coast guard said that divers had been sent to inspect the wreck of the Bayesian, which was lying at a depth of 49 metres.

Authorities confirmed that one body, believed to be that of the yacht's chef, has been found during their search of the vessel's hull.

Charlotte Golunski, who was on board the vessel, told local news outlet La Repubblica newspaper of how she saved her daughter Sofia as the boat sank.

She said, “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning."

“It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

Charlotte, her husband James and their daughter Sophia are among those onboard being treated at hospital.

The captain of a nearby boat, Karsten Borner, said that when the storm hit he turned the engine on to keep control of the vessel and avoid a collision with the Bayesian.

"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," he said, adding that the Bayesian "went flat on the water, and then down."

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days after weeks of scorching heat, which had lifted the temperature of the Mediterranean sea to record levels, raising the risk of extreme weather conditions, experts said.

Image credits: AFP/Alberto Lo Bianco/LaPresse/Shutterstock Editorial

Victorian mother jailed for forced marriage that ended in daughter's murder

In a landmark case, a Victorian mother, Sakina Muhammad Jan, has become the first person in Australia to be jailed under forced marriage laws.

Jan was sentenced to three years in prison, with a minimum of 12 months to be served, for coercing her daughter, Ruqia Haidari, into marrying a man who later murdered her.

The case unfolded in Melbourne's County Court, where Jan was surrounded by emotional family and community members. Jan, an Afghan Hazara refugee, had arranged for her daughter to marry Mohammad Ali Halimi, a match brokered by a local Islamic community member in Shepparton. Despite Haidari's reluctance, Jan pressured her into a full marriage after initial dowry arrangements of $14,000 had been made.

Haidari then relocated to Perth with her new husband, Halimi. Six weeks later, she was brutally murdered, her throat slashed with a kitchen knife. Halimi was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment by a Western Australian court.

Judge Fran Dalziel, who presided over Jan's case, noted that Haidari had expressed her desire not to marry, preferring instead to pursue education and work. However, Jan had insisted, telling her daughter (according to Judge Dalziel): “Are you my mother or am I your mother? I can make decisions for you ... Do you think it is up to you? No matter what, you need to listen to me; your mother.”

Jan's lawyers argued that she believed she was acting in her daughter's best interests, reflecting her own experiences of being married at a young age without formal education. Nonetheless, Judge Dalziel condemned Jan's actions, stating that she had "abused" her maternal power and made it clear that forced marriage is illegal and carries significant consequences for perpetrators. “It must be made clear to everyone in our country that forced marriage is against the law,” she said. “You abused your power as her mother to override her desire to not marry Mr Halimi.”

After the sentencing, Jan had an emotional outburst, refusing to accept the judge's decision or sign a recognisance release order, which would have allowed her to serve two years of her sentence in the community under certain good-behaviour conditions. The courtroom scene escalated, requiring additional security and paramedics when another woman collapsed during the proceedings.

This case marks the first known conviction under Australia's forced marriage laws, which were introduced in 2013. Authorities have noted an increase in such cases, particularly involving young women and girls.

Images: Australian Federal Police \ 9News \ ABC News

Susan Sarandon's daughter claps back at wedding dress critics

Susan Sarandon's daughter has spoken out against body-shaming trolls who were criticising her wedding dress.

Eva Amurri, who like her mum is also an actress, became the subject of online criticism after she shared photos from her wedding day online.

Writing on her blog Happily Eva After the 39-year-old admitted that the comments left her in tears, "in a way that brought me right back to Middle School".

"Here were people I didn't even know and who didn't know me, spending time and energy typing something that they hoped would bring me one thing and one thing only: Shame," she recalled the moment she came across the "hundreds of cruel comments".

"It wasn't what they were saying per se, I've had much more horrible things directed at me on the internet, but it was the yucky feeling of knowing that there are people out there (and lots of them!) whose immediate reaction upon witnessing my little family's joy was to try to hurt us."

She continued to explain that she was shocked that her wedding photos had gone viral due to something beyond her control.

"I was so taken aback by the fact that it was already viral... and for two reasons completely out of my control: My Breasts," she wrote.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; You don’t need a doctor to get more physically active – here are 10 simple steps you can take by yourself

Nerys M Astbury, University of Oxford

We all know physical activity has many health benefits, including for mental health. It helps manage stress, ease joint or back pain, and boost energy levels.

Exercise can also improve brain function and sleep, and lift mood. In contrast, inactivity or spending too much time sedentary is a leading factor in developing a range of diseases.

The World Health Organization recommends we should do a weekly minimum of 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity, such as walking, or 75 minutes of vigorous physical activity, such as swimming, jogging or an exercise class – as well as regular strength training.

However, many people fail to meet these guidelines. So what to do about this health crisis?

There is already evidence that when GPs give patients guidance and continued support to increase physical activity, this encourages them to be more physically active – at least in the short term. However, we don’t yet know the best way for doctors to communicate with patients to help them sustain these increased activity levels so the current guidance and support on offer to patients isn’t as effective as it could be.

For example, my latest research examines the “motivational interviewing” (MI) method GPs currently use to encourage patients to change their lifestyle. MI is a patient-centred, non-confrontational communication style that helps patients address any problem behaviour by exploring their ambivalence towards changing it. MI has been shown to help patients with a host of health problems, including addiction issues, eating disorders, smokers and those with diabetes to change their behaviour.

However, I found that while MI programmes can help patients increase their total amount of physical activity – the benefits are only short term.

Ten simple ways to be more physically active

If you want more physical activity in your life, then, there are many self-directed things you can do to help yourself, without joining a programme or seeing your GP.

Here are ten simple and effective ways to help you become – and stay – more physically active:

1) Don’t sit, stand

We sit a lot. In fact, it’s likely you’re sitting right now – and you needn’t be. Sitting for long periods has been linked with many adverse health outcomes, so try to stand more.

2) Take the stairs

Being physically active needn’t mean expensive gym memberships. Try building physical activity into your daily routine. One easy way to do this is by swapping the lift or escalator for the stairs.

3) Make it fun

If you like doing something, you’re more likely to continue doing it. Why not try an activity you liked doing as a child, or even something new? Who knows, you might enjoy it.

4) Phone a friend

Exercising with a friend or loved one is a great way to stay motivated, and it can make physical activity more fun too.

5) Do less, more often

“Snacktivity” – a term for breaking up your activity into shorter activity “snacks” – can help you increase activity in convenient, manageable bursts while reaping the health benefits.

6) Track your progress

Activity trackers aren’t a fad. There is evidence that just using an activity tracker such as a pedometer to count steps or a smart watch that logs activity can help increase your activity levels, reduce body fat and increase muscle mass – and increase your overall physical fitness.

7) Get into a habit

We know it takes about ten weeks to form a habit. Repetition is key – so stick with it and keep going. Once you’ve formed a physical activity habit, it will be hard to shake it off.).

8) Hold still

Try to incorporate isometric exercises like the plank or wall squats into your routine. These exercises, which need no equipment, require you to tighten muscles and hold still – and have been shown to lower your blood pressure.

9) Set a goal

Give yourself an achievable target to work towards – it will motivate you to reach your goal.

10) Reward yourself

And don’t forget to reward yourself when you meet that goal. You can also build in rewards to mark your progress along the way. After all, who doesn’t like to treat themselves when they’ve done well?<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Daughters of slain Aussie tourists break silence

The daughters of the Australian man who was killed in The Philippines alongside his partner have broken their silence after their family's "cruel" deaths.

On Wednesday last week, the bodies of David James Fisk, 57, his wife Lucita Barquin Cortez, 55, and Ms Cortez’s daughter-in-law Mary Jane Cortez, 30, were found dead inside their Lake Hotel room in Tagaytay, south of Manila.

Authorities have since confirmed that a man has handed himself in to police in connection to the alleged murders.

It is understood the man accused of killing the trio was a former employee of the hotel who wanted to “get back at the hotel management” for his dismissal.

Mr Fisk’s daughters, Lucinda and Brittany Fisk, said they have been afraid and confused ever since learning their father had been killed.

“We have been living and continuing to live a nightmare until any of this makes sense,” Lucinda told 9News.

“For someone to take our father away from us so cruelly... it just doesn’t make sense."

“We won’t stop fighting until we find out why, and we won’t stop fighting until we have justice for our father and Lucita.”

Brittany said she hoped nobody else will ever have to go through the nightmare her family are enduring.

“I’m angry, I’m really angry, and I’m scared... I don’t want this to happen to anyone else,” she said.

A hotel worker found the victims’ bodies with their hands and feet bound and packaging tape covering their mouths on Wednesday last week, according to a police statement.

Police located the main suspect in the killings using CCTV footage from the hotel, and when they arrived at his house for questioning, the man surrendered himself to police.

Capagcuan and Tagatay City Mayor Abraham Tolentino said the deaths had been a “wake-up call” after decades without similar incidents.

“Tagaytay City is a tourist-driven local economy,” he said. “We are a safe place, we are a peaceful place, and for the last 30 years there’s no crime like this in the area.”

After hearing the news of the couple's sudden and tragic passing, Mr Fisk’s family released a statement sharing their grief and pleading for answers.

“The love we have for our Father and Lucita is so dear and this situation is like living a nightmare,” the statement read.

“We pray for answers and the truth in this horrific matter and just pray for their safe return to Australian shores.”

BBC star's heartbreaking plea after wife and daughters were killed

Grief-stricken BBC racing commentator John Hunt has broken his silence after his wife and two daughters were killed during a crossbow attack.

Carol Hunt, 61, Hannah Hunt, 28, and Louise Hunt, 25, were fatally injured at their home in North London last Tuesday, with Hertfordshire Police confirming that 26-year-old Kyle Clifford had been arrested in connection to their murders.

Speaking to the BBC about the devastating incident, John's friend and fellow commentator, Matt Chapman, said, "Family means more to some than others and for John, his family unit was something he absolutely adored."

"He told me: 'Matty, the message I would tell everyone is you never know when it's going to be the last day you see your family'."

"The message was very clear: make the most of every day because you just don't know."

Mr Chapman said proceeds from a fundraiser set up after the horrifying attack, which has currently raised more than $53,000 AUD, will go to John's surviving daughter, Amy.

He said John had said his "biggest desire" was to make sure Amy had "no money worries for the rest of her life".

"There are a lot of people, including myself, who feel helpless and would like to do something," he said.

"John would like nothing more for Amy after these horrific events than a life that is a little less stressful, because life will never be stress-free again."

"It's not going to take their grief away - it's not going to take the pain away or change anything - but it might help them have an easier life."

John and Amy released a joint statement on Saturday, thanking the public for their messages of support during what they described as "an extremely difficult time for us".

"The devastation that we are experiencing cannot be put into words," they said.

"We would like to thank people for their kind messages and for the support we have received in recent days. These have provided great comfort to us for which we are very grateful."

"As you can imagine, this is an extremely difficult time for us, and we need time and space to come to terms with what has happened and start the grieving process."

As the investigation continues into the brutal deaths, police shared that they have not yet been able to speak to him as he remains in a serious condition after suffering self-inflicted wounds.

Daughter of former All Black charged over alleged hit and run death

The daughter of former New Zealand All Black has been charged over an alleged hit and run that left a 65-year-old man dead in Auckland.

Helena Jade Cribb, the daughter of Ron Cribb, was charged earlier this year after Jason Collins' body was found by a member of the public on O'Brien Rd, Lucas Heights in the early hours of December 7.

The 22-year-old previously had a name suppression, which has now lapsed.

Earlier this year, Detective Sergeant Ben Bergin said the driver allegedly involved had been identified not long after Collins' death.

"A thorough investigation has been underway into the tragic circumstances by the Waitematā CIB and we have reached a point where charges have been filed," Bergin said.

Collins has been remembered as a devoted father, husband and friend.

"The tragic loss of Jason has left an unfillable void in our hearts," a statement on behalf of his family read.

"...his absence is a constant ache, a relentless reminder of what we've lost.

"Taken from us too soon, his departure is a profound and senseless blow that we struggle to comprehend.

"Each day is a battle against the overwhelming emptiness left in his wake.

"We ask for privacy at this time as we continue to grieve."

The 22-year-old reportedly faces a charge of operating a vehicle carelessly, causing death while under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

She is set to reappear in court in September.

Image: NZ Police

"Take it back to her”: Parents' heartbroken plea to thieves who targeted their daughter's grave

When three-year-old Brittany Conway died after swelling a button battery, news of her death made headlines and prompted urgent warnings to parents everywhere.

Now, just one month out from the four-year anniversary of Brittany's death, her parents are grieving all over again after their daughter's grave was targeted by callous thieves, who took off with a "precious" keepsake.

“She was a vivacious little girl, there was a sparkle in her eye,” Brittany’s mother Lorraine told 7News. “She was a very loving, gentle, funny character.”

Brittany’s love of tiaras was immortalised when one was placed inside a locked glass-front box attached to her grave.

“Brittany loved wearing big bows and pretty dresses, she loved the tiaras and high heels,” Lorraine said.

“We just wanted her to know she was our little princess.”

Brittany's parents were heartbroken when they discovered that thieves had pried open the lockbox on the grave and stolen the tiara.

“I was so angry to think someone had taken something so precious, taken it out of somewhere so sacred,” Lorraine said.

The local Gold Coast community has rallied around the family, offering to replace the tiara and even reward money for the beloved item to be returned.

Brittany’s parents are still hoping the tiara will be returned, and sharing a public message to the thief that they “did not hate them” for what they had done, but urged them to give the item back.

“I’m still angry, I’m hurt, but my main thing now is to get (the tiara) home, and bring it back to Brittany where it belongs,” Lorraine said.

“They haven’t thought about how much of an impact it has had on the family."

“If you’re watching this, and you’ve taken it, I don’t hate you — just take it back to her.”
