"Truly blessed" Irwins celebrate 33 years of love, legacy and wildlife

Australia’s beloved wildlife family is celebrating a milestone today, with Terri Irwin marking 33 years since she married the late Steve Irwin – the larger-than-life Crocodile Hunter who captured hearts across the globe.

On June 4, 1992, Steve and Terri tied the knot in Terri’s grandmother’s church in Oregon. That day, Terri says, was the beginning of her “happily ever after”.

Now, more than three decades on – and nearly 20 years since Steve’s tragic passing – the Irwin family continues to live and thrive in his memory, sharing love, adventure and a deep dedication to wildlife conservation.

Terri took to Instagram to honour her wedding anniversary, sharing a heartfelt tribute to Steve. “Today, 33 years ago, Steve and I were married in my grandmother’s church in Oregon,” she wrote. “And it was the first day of my happily ever after.”

While she admits she still wishes Steve were here, Terri said she wakes each day “with beautiful memories, so much love in my heart, and the promise of continuing his incredible legacy. I am truly blessed.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Terri Irwin (@terriirwincrikey)

Daughter Bindi shared her own tribute soon after, reposting her mother’s words and adding: “Happy anniversary to my beautiful mum and dad.” She called the pair “soulmates”.

Bindi was just eight when her father died in 2006, and Robert, only two. But both children have grown into strong voices for conservation, public figures in their own right, and torchbearers of their dad’s legacy.

The family has also grown, with Bindi marrying husband Chandler Powell and welcoming daughter Grace Warrior – making Terri a grandmother, and Steve a granddad in spirit.

Reflecting on the past month, which included both joyful and challenging moments, Bindi shared a touching update this morning with photos from family travels and her recent hospital stay.

“‘I love you’ will never be enough for my family,” she wrote. Her post included sweet snaps from a Disneyland trip, quiet family moments, and scenes from her recovery following surgery.

Terri commented lovingly on the post: “We are truly blessed”.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin)

Images: Instagram

Kochie reportedly eyeing off top job in AFL

Port Adelaide chairman David Koch is reportedly positioning himself to succeed Richard Goyder as the next AFL chairman, in a potential shake-up that could ripple through both the league and the Power’s leadership structure.

According to veteran journalist Damian Barrett, Koch, who has chaired Port Adelaide since 2012, is “eyeing off” what is widely regarded as the most powerful position in Australian rules football.

“David Koch, along with Ken Hinkley, has transformed this footy club from what it once was, but he is eyeing off a potential spot on the AFL Commission as well,” Barrett said on Nine’s Footy Classified. “Not just a spot on the commission, but potentially to be the chair of it.”

The current AFL chairman, Richard Goyder – also the former Qantas chairman – has led the AFL since 2017, succeeding Carlton great Mike Fitzpatrick. While many within the league had expected Goyder to step down when his current term ends in early 2026, The Age reported in late 2024 that he is seeking another term, which would extend his tenure until 2028.

This ambition reportedly blindsided several AFL clubs, who were under the impression a leadership transition was imminent. Goyder has served on the AFL Commission since 2011, and prominent football figures are now calling for a change.

“After serving the game admirably as a commissioner since 2011 and chairman since 2017, it's simply time for Richard Goyder to pull up stumps, this year,” Brownlow Medallist Gerard Healy told SEN. “At worst, orchestrate a 12-month handover to the incoming chairman, who can get to work immediately.”

Barrett suggested that Koch’s potential move to the AFL Commission – and possibly into the chairman’s seat – adds to the uncertainty surrounding Port Adelaide, especially as the club prepares for life after long-serving coach Ken Hinkley.

“I raise that as part of the backdrop of instability and uncertainty at Port Adelaide as it wades through this Ken Hinkley to Josh Carr transition,” Barrett said. “You’ve got the chair of the club also unknown.”

Koch, a former TV presenter best known for co-hosting Sunrise, has played a key role in Port Adelaide’s revival over the past decade. However, his possible pursuit of a league-wide role could usher in a new era of change for both club and code.

Whether Goyder chooses to extend his reign or step aside for new leadership, the months ahead promise to be significant for the AFL's executive future – and Port Adelaide’s.

Images: 9 Network

Bindi Irwin rushed to hospital in the US

Conservationist and TV personality Bindi Irwin was rushed to hospital for emergency surgery in Las Vegas after suffering a ruptured appendix, her brother Robert Irwin confirmed over the weekend.

The 26-year-old daughter of the late Steve Irwin had travelled to Las Vegas to attend the annual Steve Irwin Gala, which honours her father’s legacy and raises funds for Wildlife Warriors, the conservation organisation he founded. However, an unexpected medical crisis derailed her plans.

“She’s going to be OK, but surgery – out of all the things we were ready for, that was not one of them,” said Robert Irwin, 21, in an interview with People at the gala. “She’s just come out the other side of endometriosis and now the appendix goes. Health is so important – it really is.”

Bindi had reportedly intended to attend the high-profile event despite experiencing severe discomfort. “She came to Las Vegas and was ready to come to the gala, put on a brave face in a lot of discomfort and a lot of pain and said, ‘Nope, I’m just going to tough it out, I’m going to go for it,’” Robert said. “But the surgeon said, ‘No, your appendix is going. That thing’s gotta come out.’ Health has to come first.”

Their mother, Terri Irwin, 60, also skipped the gala to be by Bindi’s side during her recovery. “She’s very sad,” Robert said of his sister. “She’s devastated that she and Mum can’t be here, but I know she’ll make a speedy recovery.”

“Bindi has become an incredible advocate for women’s health particularly," continued Robert, "and I think it’s really important to prioritise getting help.”

Just a day before her hospitalisation, Bindi shared cheerful photos on social media alongside her mother and brother in Las Vegas. “Khaki by day – Bellagio chic by night! Here in #LasVegas for the #SteveIrwinGala raising funds and awareness for Wildlife Warriors,” she captioned the post. “Supporting conservation and remembering Dad’s extraordinary legacy.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Bindi Irwin (@bindisueirwin)

The Steve Irwin Gala is held annually to raise awareness and funds for conservation efforts in honour of Steve Irwin, who died tragically in 2006 after a stingray attack.

Bindi has been candid about her long battle with endometriosis, which went undiagnosed for a decade. In a February episode of the A Life of Greatness podcast, she spoke openly about the debilitating symptoms and challenges she faced before undergoing surgery in March 2023. “Every day the fatigue and the battle,” she said, describing how the illness affected her daily life and relationships.

“There’s no cure for endometriosis, but if you’re able to get surgery you have a better shot at life,” she said. “Maybe in five or 10 years, I’ll have to get another surgery, but for now, it’s all gone, which I’m very grateful for.”

Despite her health setbacks, Bindi continues to inspire many through her advocacy and commitment to wildlife conservation – a mission she proudly carries forward in her father’s name.

Images: Instagram

Over 350k Aussies to be forced back into the office

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has vowed to end working from home arrangements for public servants, forcing them back into an office five days a week.

The leader of the Coalition will end flexible work arrangements for federal government employees, which currently allows them to work from home for two days a week.

According to a report in the Australian Financial Review, the Coalition will also make massive job cuts, slashing about 36,000 jobs, which will save about $6 billion per year, if elected in the upcoming federal election.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese warned that the drastic move would impact frontline workers, meaning slower delivery times for Aussies on benefits, including veterans.

Opposition spokeswoman Jane Hume said the government has offered a “blank cheque to work from home” to employees, saying it was “unsustainable” and “not an arrangement that works for everyone”.

On Tuesday, 7News reporter Nick McCallum and Founding Director of Western Sydney Women, Amanda Rose, spoke with Nat Barr about the policy on Sunrise.

“Nick, would there be a revolt if public servants are ordered back to the office?” Barr asked.

“I have no doubt there would be. I actually like the policy. I think it is ridiculous that, what is it now, more than 60 per cent of federal public servants have ability to work at home,” McCallum said.

“There is a big ‘but’ to all of this: Peter Dutton, it’s a perfect policy for him to sound tough, sound Donald Trump-like, bang his chest and say ‘I am going to demand they come back’ but they’ve recently signed a workplace agreement and under that there is a presumption that they can work at home."

“All people in the public service can at least request it. There is a presumption they can do it and there is no limit on the number of days they can actually work from home."

“So, he can’t really change that until 2027 anyway. So, call me cynical but it’s a perfect policy for him but at the moment he can’t do a lot about it.”

Steve Price has launched into a tirade on The Project over a story about a woman's savvy use of Airtasker.

The Sydney woman posted a job on the site to pay a stranger $100 if they delivered her a pair of sneakers to the Ivy nightclub, after her high heels began hurting her feet at 1am.

Her ingenuity quickly went viral, with The Project panellist Georgie Tunny explaining the situation.

"Someone came through (and delivered the shoes), and her followers applauded her, calling it genius hack," Tunny said.

Steve Price, however, wasn't impressed by the woman's determination to be comfortable, blasting her "ridiculous" request.

Price crinkled his face in disgust at the harmless story and let loose, mincing no words as he shared his opinion.

"Don't be stupid. That's the most ridiculous, over-privileged w**ky thing I've heard of" he said.

"That woman has too much money. She got secondhand smelly sneakers," Steve added.

Georgie defended the woman, saying that in her clubbing days, she would absolutely have paid someone a decent sum in order to be in comfortable shoes and spare her feet.

Bindi Irwin opens up about Steve's secret health battle

Bindi Irwin has opened up about her "whirlwind" life with her late father Steve Irwin before he tragically died.

Speaking to Sarah Grynberg on the A Life of Greatness podcast, the wildlife warrior said her family's life was a "hurricane of adventure and wonder because of dad" before he passed away when she was juts eight years old.

Bindi also candidly revealed that Steve suffered "terrible insomnia" which caused him to wake up in the dead of night.

"He had terrible insomnia. I mean, he just never slept," she said.

"He would wake up at 2am and by the time everyone else's workday has started, he'd put in a full day's work," she said.

Steve Irwin's incredible work ethic was recently discovered in the Australia Zoo offices when staff were clearing out a cupboard before a renovation, which Bindi was quick to vouch for.

"People may not realise that he had such a scientific mind," she said.

"I was looking through his journals and he would just write down, I mean, thousands, it's not an exaggeration, but thousands of pages worth of information and facts and studies and findings."

She said "by the time everyone else's workday has started, he'd put in a full day's work, and he would spend that time because the world is dark".

"He would spend that time researching and studying. And that's where these journals came from."

The wildlife warrior then opened up about her journey with grief, recalling when Steve passed away in 2006.

"I remember when I was little and dad had just died, every adult that I saw would say to me: 'Time heals all wounds.' And I remember thinking, as an eight year old: 'What in the heck does that mean?' Why do people keep telling me like, one day I'll forget about this?" she said.

"It actually made me a little bit scared," Bindi said, adding that she now knew "that information is wrong".

"So firstly, don't say that to an eight-year-old. Time changes your grief. Time changes things and your perspective and everything," she continued.

"But I know firsthand that the grief and the sadness and the feeling of loss from losing dad. That feeling is just a part of me. It's like a scar on your heart."

Dad sparks debate over "unfair" job ad

A recent job ad on Airtasker has highlighted just how far some parents are willing to go to reserve a public spot in the park.

The job ad offered $50 for someone to sit at a picnic table in Alison Park in Randwick, Sydney for two hours on behalf of a family looking to host a birthday party.

“Planning a kids’ birthday party at Alison Park. We need someone to mind the only picnic table in the park, so essentially, we need someone to sit at the table and reserve the spot for two hours from 7am to 9am,” the user wrote online, with detailed instructions of where to go.

The post was shared in a parenting group on Facebook, where it received mixed reactions.

“First come, first served,” one person commented.

“It’s unfair, you can’t reserve public spaces,” added another.

A few others thought $50 was too "cheap", but despite some backlash, most people were surprisingly supportive of the act.

“Genius! An easy way to earn cash!” said one parent.

“I don’t see any issue with this. It’s a great idea, and the guy is paying for it,” another mum wrote.

Others pointed out that it was a good solution, with one writing: “I also don’t see an issue with this. It’s common practice for people to arrive early to reserve spots and tables at the park for parties.

"Maybe this person doesn’t have any help, so it’s completely fine to pay someone to help them. Of course, it would be nicer if the council had a booking system, but they don’t."

“I don’t think it’s a terrible idea. I actually prefer it when councils have a booking system for tables. It saves people from having to reserve a table all day for a 1pm party and holds them responsible for tidying up afterwards,” another added.

The debate on reserving public spots is not new, with one family even resorting to using cling-wrap to secure a gazebo at the beach.

Image: Randwick Council/ news.com.au

Ash Barty loses high-profile Optus job

Ash Barty has lost her job as Optus' Chief of inspiration.

The Grand Slam tennis champion signed on with the telecommunications company as one of their ambassadors in September 2022, just months after announcing her retirement from tennis.

“The decision was taken as we looked to rebuild customer trust and focus on the fundamentals that we know are important to them – a resilient network, great value products and services, and simple, efficient customer service,” an Optus spokesperson told the Australian Financial Review.

The telecommunications giant quietly made the move this year, and also parted ways with ex-F1 star Daniel Ricciardo, who was their Chief of Optimism.

The role included fronting several campaigns for the brand and featuring in viral stunts.

Both stars have updated their LinkedIn accounts to reflect their departure from the jobs.

Barty had the role for two years, while Ricciardo was appointed as the Chief of Optimism in September 2020.

The Australian Financial Review’s Myriam Robin described Optus’ move as a “one-two kick in the guts for Daniel”, who was cut by Red Bull’s junior team VCARB earlier this year.

Optus' move away from Barty and Ricciardo comes after the company's former chief executive Kelly Bayer Rosmarin was replaced by Stephen Rue in September.

While Barty lost her job at the telecommunications company, she is still listed as the Women's Tennis Association's National Indigenous Tennis Ambassador on LinkedIn.

Since her retirement from tennis at the peak of her career, she has worked as a commentator for Stan during the Paris Olympics, released a series of children's books as part of her Little Ash series, and a tennis-themed book for kids called Tennis Camp Diaries.

Image: Instagram

Robert Irwin celebrates milestone birthday with rare pic of Steve at 21

Robert Irwin has celebrated his 21st birthday with a heartfelt tribute to his late father and Aussie icon Steve.

Sharing a photo of his dad's 21st birthday in 1983, the wildlife warrior admitted how hard it was to celebrate the special day "when there's someone missing".

"Today I turn 21. I was looking through the archives a few days ago and I found these pictures of my dad on his 21st," he wrote alongside the photos of Steve on Instagram.

"It can be hard to celebrate the milestones when there’s someone missing, but I will carry his memory and passion with me in this new chapter of life. Air traffic controller found asleep on the job

An air traffic controller has been found asleep on the job, with the incident prompting calls for better fatigue management, according to Australia's transport watchdog.

The report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) dates back to December 2022, when the Airservices Australia controller was found lying across two chairs with a blanket covering them at 5am.

The controller had worked multiple night shifts with reduced extended rest periods, "which likely reduced their ability to obtain restorative sleep", the report claimed.

ATSB chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said the controller had increased their chances of falling asleep "by lying across two chairs, not moving, and not undertaking activities to maintain mental alertness".

When a colleague discovered the snoozing worker, there was no traffic in the Cairns airspace they were responsible for managing, which was usual for that time of day, and there were no scheduled flights until after their shift.

However, the report highlighted the possible problems the incident pay have caused, saying if the traffic controller was woken up by a radio broadcast, they may have experienced "sleep inertia", with the risk of delayed communications, or incorrect instructions or actions.

"There were no negative consequences from this occurrence, but it does highlight areas for improvement in work scheduling and fatigue risk management," said Mitchell .

Since the incident, Airservices Australia has increased its overall number of air traffic controllers, and has also drawn up new guidelines and training about fatigue risk assessment.

"Fatigue remains one of the most relevant ongoing concerns for safe transport, despite increased awareness across the transport sector," said Mitchell.

Channel Seven loses veteran reporter to rival network

A Channel Seven reporter has announced he is leaving the network to join a rival station.

Journalist Steve Hart from the 7News room in Brisbane shared that he is leaving the network after two years to join the WIN News, owned by Nine, in Wollongong.

Hart, who first joined the Seven Network in 2022 after leaving Network 10, will have his last day on September 11th.

The news was revealed in an internal email to staff on Tuesday, which cited “family reasons” as the driving force behind Hart’s decision.

According to Courier Mail, Hart’s wife has been living in Sydney, and his regular weekend commutes to be with her have played a significant role in his choice to relocate closer to his family.

The news of Hart's departure comes after the 7News room in Brisbane has faces a series of controversies, with many high profile presenters fleeing the network.

Hart's departure comes just one week after sports presenter Shane Webcke announced his decision to step back from the news desk, following discussions with management to reduce his work hours and focus on his family’s agricultural business.

The departure of both Hart and Webcke is understood to be unrelated to the recent wave of redundancies at Seven, and comes after the ABC Four Corners investigation into toxic workplace culture in the Brisbane newsroom.

Young Aussies hit back at Steve Price for calling them "lazy"

Young Aussies have hit back at Steve Price after being criticised as lazy by the broadcaster.

Prince unleashed at younger generations on The Project while they were discussing the campaign for more leave initiated by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, which is pushing to increase annual leave to five weeks a year.

The union hopes to ease burnout in employees, and Price was not impressed with the calls for extra leave.

"We're trying to get productivity up in this country," he said.

"So we've got people refusing to go back to the office, working from home in barely washed tracksuit tops and bottoms, three days a week.

"And now they want five weeks holiday."

Georgie Tunny, a millennial, hit back at the boomer by arguing that the "work culture" has changed, especially among those new to the workforce.

"Especially for the younger generations, they see work completely differently," she said.

Price interrupted her saying that young Aussies just did not want to "work very hard", to which Tunny replied: "There's been a death of your job as your identity or career."

Social media users were quick to back Tunny, and took aim at Price.

"Where's the incentive for young people to work hard when working hard won't buy you a house or even afford you basic veggies," one said.

"You get what you pay for, and it's not worth it to work hard. There's literally no benefit to working as hard as you can," another added.

"When you're priced out of the market, priced out of holidays and priced out of necessities, what motivation is there to care or be productive," another added.

Others suggested that employers should "increase wages and introduce bonuses as incentives," to encourage their staff to work harder.

"Nobody is interested in working themselves to death for scraps," one person said.

"I don't want to work very hard for CEOs to make millions while I'm barley able to afford bread," another said.

"Our generation is just sick of working hard to have all the higher ups take the credit and the bag. We know what we're worth," a third added.

A recent Productivity Commission report found that Aussies born after 1990 are finding more difficult than previous generations to move up the financial ladder.

The report also found that young Aussies are increasingly earning less than their parents did at the same age, with the global financial crisis partially to blame for the weak income growth.

Images: The Project

Aussies working in "priority occupations" eligible for cash increase

Thousands of hard-working Aussies who work in certain areas are now eligible for new training and support payments of up to $10,000.

The initiative comes to support Australians working in sectors with a high demand for skilled workers, and a commitment to clean energy.

From July 1st, thousands of apprentices working in what the government deems as “priority occupations” are eligible for the $5,000 Australian Apprenticeship Training Support Payment.

If those priority occupations also offer exposure and experience in “clean energy”, apprentices are instead eligible for the more lucrative New Energy Apprenticeship Support Payment of up to $10,000.

The list of "priority occupations" is extensive and includes aged care workers, arborists, bakers, beauty therapists and many more.

According to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), the jobs are characterised by a strong current demand for skilled workers, and a strong demand expected in the future.

The clean energy jobs also include many different professions, with agricultural and agritech technicians, automotive electricians, regular electricians, gas fitters, glaziers, joiners, plumbers and welders all included.

The full list of priority jobs can be found on the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations website.

For the Australian Apprenticeship Training Support Payment, the $5000 payment comes in four instalments over two years, while the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment is paid out over the course of the apprenticeship — up to $5000 for part-time apprentices and up to $10,000 for full-time apprentices.

It is hoped the payments will incentivise apprentices to remain on the career pathway.
