Air traffic controller found asleep on the job

An air traffic controller has been found asleep on the job, with the incident prompting calls for better fatigue management, according to Australia's transport watchdog.

The report by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) dates back to December 2022, when the Airservices Australia controller was found lying across two chairs with a blanket covering them at 5am.

The controller had worked multiple night shifts with reduced extended rest periods, "which likely reduced their ability to obtain restorative sleep", the report claimed.

ATSB chief commissioner Angus Mitchell said the controller had increased their chances of falling asleep "by lying across two chairs, not moving, and not undertaking activities to maintain mental alertness".

When a colleague discovered the snoozing worker, there was no traffic in the Cairns airspace they were responsible for managing, which was usual for that time of day, and there were no scheduled flights until after their shift.

However, the report highlighted the possible problems the incident pay have caused, saying if the traffic controller was woken up by a radio broadcast, they may have experienced "sleep inertia", with the risk of delayed communications, or incorrect instructions or actions.

"There were no negative consequences from this occurrence, but it does highlight areas for improvement in work scheduling and fatigue risk management," said Mitchell .

Since the incident, Airservices Australia has increased its overall number of air traffic controllers, and has also drawn up new guidelines and training about fatigue risk assessment.

"Fatigue remains one of the most relevant ongoing concerns for safe transport, despite increased awareness across the transport sector," said Mitchell.

Channel Seven loses veteran reporter to rival network

A Channel Seven reporter has announced he is leaving the network to join a rival station.

Journalist Steve Hart from the 7News room in Brisbane shared that he is leaving the network after two years to join the WIN News, owned by Nine, in Wollongong.

Hart, who first joined the Seven Network in 2022 after leaving Network 10, will have his last day on September 11th.

The news was revealed in an internal email to staff on Tuesday, which cited “family reasons” as the driving force behind Hart’s decision.

According to Courier Mail, Hart’s wife has been living in Sydney, and his regular weekend commutes to be with her have played a significant role in his choice to relocate closer to his family.

The news of Hart's departure comes after the 7News room in Brisbane has faces a series of controversies, with many high profile presenters fleeing the network.

Hart's departure comes just one week after sports presenter Shane Webcke announced his decision to step back from the news desk, following discussions with management to reduce his work hours and focus on his family’s agricultural business.

The departure of both Hart and Webcke is understood to be unrelated to the recent wave of redundancies at Seven, and comes after the ABC Four Corners investigation into toxic workplace culture in the Brisbane newsroom.

Young Aussies hit back at Steve Price for calling them "lazy"

Young Aussies have hit back at Steve Price after being criticised as lazy by the broadcaster.

Prince unleashed at younger generations on The Project while they were discussing the campaign for more leave initiated by the Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees Association, which is pushing to increase annual leave to five weeks a year.

The union hopes to ease burnout in employees, and Price was not impressed with the calls for extra leave.

"We're trying to get productivity up in this country," he said.

"So we've got people refusing to go back to the office, working from home in barely washed tracksuit tops and bottoms, three days a week.

"And now they want five weeks holiday."

Georgie Tunny, a millennial, hit back at the boomer by arguing that the "work culture" has changed, especially among those new to the workforce.

"Especially for the younger generations, they see work completely differently," she said.

Price interrupted her saying that young Aussies just did not want to "work very hard", to which Tunny replied: "There's been a death of your job as your identity or career."

Social media users were quick to back Tunny, and took aim at Price.

"Where's the incentive for young people to work hard when working hard won't buy you a house or even afford you basic veggies," one said.

"You get what you pay for, and it's not worth it to work hard. There's literally no benefit to working as hard as you can," another added.

"When you're priced out of the market, priced out of holidays and priced out of necessities, what motivation is there to care or be productive," another added.

Others suggested that employers should "increase wages and introduce bonuses as incentives," to encourage their staff to work harder.

"Nobody is interested in working themselves to death for scraps," one person said.

"I don't want to work very hard for CEOs to make millions while I'm barley able to afford bread," another said.

"Our generation is just sick of working hard to have all the higher ups take the credit and the bag. We know what we're worth," a third added.

A recent Productivity Commission report found that Aussies born after 1990 are finding more difficult than previous generations to move up the financial ladder.

The report also found that young Aussies are increasingly earning less than their parents did at the same age, with the global financial crisis partially to blame for the weak income growth.

Images: The Project

Aussies working in "priority occupations" eligible for cash increase

Thousands of hard-working Aussies who work in certain areas are now eligible for new training and support payments of up to $10,000.

The initiative comes to support Australians working in sectors with a high demand for skilled workers, and a commitment to clean energy.

From July 1st, thousands of apprentices working in what the government deems as “priority occupations” are eligible for the $5,000 Australian Apprenticeship Training Support Payment.

If those priority occupations also offer exposure and experience in “clean energy”, apprentices are instead eligible for the more lucrative New Energy Apprenticeship Support Payment of up to $10,000.

The list of "priority occupations" is extensive and includes aged care workers, arborists, bakers, beauty therapists and many more.

According to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), the jobs are characterised by a strong current demand for skilled workers, and a strong demand expected in the future.

The clean energy jobs also include many different professions, with agricultural and agritech technicians, automotive electricians, regular electricians, gas fitters, glaziers, joiners, plumbers and welders all included.

The full list of priority jobs can be found on the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations website.

For the Australian Apprenticeship Training Support Payment, the $5000 payment comes in four instalments over two years, while the New Energy Apprentice Support Payment is paid out over the course of the apprenticeship — up to $5000 for part-time apprentices and up to $10,000 for full-time apprentices.

It is hoped the payments will incentivise apprentices to remain on the career pathway.

Tasmania has just opened applications for 10 "odd jobs" that you could do in exchange for a free trip to the state.

As part of Tourism Tasmania's latest campaign to entice winter visitors, they are offering to cover travel and accommodation costs in exchange for a few odd jobs.

While the work is unpaid and only lasts a day or two, the chosen Aussies will also get a hire car and a hamper worth up to $500 of local Tasmania produce and memorabilia.

One of the jobs on offer is a wombat walker at East Coast Natureworld in Bicheno.

The wildlife park is looking for an animal and nature lover, who loves going out for walks to lead the furry animals on their morning waddles as part of their rehabilitation program.

Another job on offer is a “paranormal investigator” who will help Tasmania’s Most Haunted in New Norfolk capture and document any disturbances, spectral figures or unexplained phenomena at Willow Court Asylum.

They are looking for someone who is “attuned into interactions with the otherworldly” and respects the controversial history of Willow Court.

Other jobs include a “truffle snuffler” at The Truffledore, which involves truffle hunting with a canine companion, a “wine whisperer” at Clover Hill, a “puffer nut” at West Coast Wilderness Railway and “soaksmith” at Little Things Farm.

They are also looking for an “oyster organiser”, a “star seeker” and “sauna stoker”.

Anyone interested in taking these odd jobs must explain in 50 words or less why they want to swap their day job for the odd job in Tasmania.

Applications are open from now until July 8 this year.

The total value of the prize pool is up to $25,000.

“More and more, we’re all looking for remedies through experience that make life feel simpler and less stressful," Tourism Tasmania chief marketing officer Lindene Cleary said.

“Watching ‘cottagecore’ videos of people gardening and building cabins in the woods. Hobbies like cooking and reading are even trumping digital hobbies like gaming.

"So, we extend a warm invite to Australians to apply for an odd job in Tasmania and wake up from their cool weather coma.”

Images: Tourism Tasmania

Steve Price fires up over Dan Andrews' special honour

Steve Price has sparked a bitter row on-air with his co-hosts of The Project, as he spoke out against former premier Dan Andrews being named on the King’s Honours list this year.

Andrews, the former premier of Victoria who saw the state through the Covid pandemic, has been recognised on the prestigious list for his “eminent service to the people and parliament of Victoria, to public health, to policy and regulatory reform, and to infrastructure development”.

After the announcement of Andrews' upcoming recognition, Price let loose on The Project as he condemned the former premier.

“It’s got to be some sort of sick joke,” he said as he began his rant.

“Who would expect Daniel Andrews would get the highest honour that you can possibly get from the King? It’s the equivalent of a Knighthood! This is a bloke who locked Victoria up longer than anywhere else in the word. Apart from Covid, this bloke wasted 600 million dollars not holding the Commonwealth Games.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Project (@theprojecttv)

He continued, “Every infrastructure project he’s [Andrews] ticked off on is either over budget or over time. And we give him an award? I mean it is pathetic!”

“I have never heard people today so angry about something like this. Daniel Andrews should be run out of the State, not given an award. It’s pathetic!”

As co-host Waleed Aly began to share his own thoughts on the matter, Price butted in to ask, “You’re not going to defend Andrews are you?”

“Will you let me say something?” replied Aly awkwardly, as Price nodded his head.

“Premiers usually get these awards, but they don’t usually get them this quickly,” continued Aly.

“And the weird thing about this is that it isn’t for services to the State, it’s for services to health. And that makes it about the pandemic disproportionately. If this was happening in a few years, I don’t think we’d be having this conversation.”

Despite Price's claims that many were angry with the decision to award Andrews with the honour, it turns out most of the outrage was directed towards Price himself as many condemned his "embarrassing" rant.

“What criteria is The Project applying to Steve Prices opinion? The short man is a self serving blowhard that has no credible platform for his opinions. Surely in 2024 there are better options in Australia,” ranted one annoyed viewer.

A second person commented, “If it makes Steve Price mad then it’s a great decision!!” with another replying, “Like anybody should give credibility to anything Steve Price says”.

The onslaught of remarks didn’t end there, with another firing back, “Steve Price is jealous and miserable,” while a similarly annoyed viewer wrote, “Dan living rent free in Price’s head, embarrassing”.

Image credits: The Project / AMES ROSS/EPA-EFE / Shutterstock Editorial

How Bindi Irwin is passing down Steve's legacy to her daughter

Bindi Irwin has found a unique and heartwarming way to introduce her late dad Steve to her own daughter.

Grace, who is now three years old, never got to meet her grandfather Steve Irwin, who tragically passed away in 2006.

In order to pass down his legacy and introduce Steve to her own daughter, Bindi has been showing Grace her dad's old documentaries.

In an interview with US Weekly, 25-year-old Bindi said her daughter has already picked up Steve's iconic catchphrase.

"He was the same person in real life as he was on screen, so I feel like Grace is able to grow up knowing him," Bindi said.

"As soon as we turn Dad on, she starts doing her imitation, yelling 'Crikey!' through the living room."

Bindi, who continues to run Australia Zoo alongside her mum Terri, brother Robert, and her husband Chandler Powell, said the place is still filled with the essence of Steve with photos of him all through the park.

It's bittersweet for Bindi, who's seeing her daughter grow up with a version of Steve who's only on the screen and the memory of him in Australia Zoo, but she's hoping that he's proud of them.

"If I had the chance, the one thing I'd say to my dad is, 'I love you, and I miss you. Every day that you aren't here is hard. But we hope to be making you proud,'" she said.

"I think when there's love that is that great, it never truly goes away. He's always with us."

Telstra announces thousands of job losses

Telstra is set to axe 2,800 jobs, or 9 percent of their total workforce, by the end of 2024 in a bid to save a whopping $350 million.

The telco giant announced that the job cuts would "begin immediately" as a result of the impending business "reset" strategy.

Chief executive officer Vicki Brady announced the cuts on Tuesday, and said the job cuts were "difficult" but "necessary" as parts of Telstra were not performing to the required levels.

"We need to be a more efficient and sustainable business to ensure we can keep investing at the levels required to meet the ever-increasing demand for our connectivity and services for our customers right across the country," she said.

Ms Brady also assured Telstra customers that the job losses would not affect customer service teams.

“We have invested significantly in our customer service over recent years. That includes on-shoring our call centres for consumer and small business customers, it includes buying back our stores to deliver consistently good experience,” she said.

“None of these changes impact those commitments."

“As we work through the further changes still to come that I expect to be able to share with our employees in mid-July, customer service and experience will continue to be a key priority in that.”

Despite Ms Brady's claims, Communication Workers Union (CWU) National Assistant Secretary, James Perkins, who represents Telstra workers said there was no way the substantial job cuts would not affect services.

“While the detail of where exactly these jobs are being cut from is still unclear, one thing is certain – it will have a devastating impact on services,” Mr Perkins said.

“You can’t slash thousands of jobs without seriously impacting the delivery of services across the country. Telstra has to answer to this.”

The job cuts come as Telstra continues to scale up AI adoption, after the company announced in February it was expanding two in-house developed generative AI solutions following “promising pilots with frontline team members, enabling faster and more successful interactions with customers”.

"You will be a massive failure": Steve Price unleashes on Kyle Sandilands

The feud between Steve Price and Kyle Sandilands has taken a new turn, as Price unleashed on Sandilands over the launch of The Kyle and Jackie O Show in Melbourne.

The Project panel were discussing the show's first episode in the Victorian capital which was met with a mixed reception, given the use of coarse language.

Price took the discussion to the next level as he made it clear he is not a fan of the KIISFM show or its host.

“Kyle, last time I mentioned you on this program I called you a grubby buffoon. That was a compliment in hindsight,” Price said on Monday night's episode of The Project.

“That garbage you put to air this morning, sexualised rubbish, toxic, nobody should listen to it and you will be a massive failure in Melbourne.”

Price continued his tirade, accusing Sandilands of sending him a “threatening message” last November after his “grubby buffoon” comments, and he dared the KIIS FM star to “do it again”.

He ended the spray by saying, “I do note that you didn’t have the guts to sit down and do an interview with me to talk about your new radio show, perhaps because you’ve got the intellect of a cumquat”.

Sandilands responded to Price's comments live on air on Tuesday morning, taking aim at the co-host and the show at large.

“[The Project] is no good,” he said about the Channel 10 program. “It’s a piece of s**t”.

“No one watches it, and they don’t like us.”

As for Price's claims, Sandilands accused the fellow broadcaster of being “fake”, and claimed that Price sent a revealing note to his manager last month.

The note allegedly said, “I’m very aware Kyle and I have had some interesting whacks at each other over the years but as we know, it’s all part of the game.”

“See, I’m right, it is feigned outrage,” Sandilands said.

“Does he mean what he says or is he just full of s**t?”

Kyle and Jackie O tried to call Price on Tuesday morning to address their ongoing feud, but he didn’t answer.

Image credits: The Project / Instagram

"Arrogance personified": Rich lister slammed for "pointless" job advice

An Aussie rich lister has gone viral for all the wrong reasons, after her "tone deaf" advice for young Aussies to get a job fell flat.

Sarina Russo, who made her start on the property market, shared the importance of relying on yourself to achieve financial independence.

Ms Russo, who is ranked 59th on Australia’s 2024 Rich Women list with an estimated net worth of $271 million, runs a business that provides government-funded entrepreneurship programs to create self-employment opportunities.

Known for handing out unsolicited financial advice, Russo was filmed on sharing her opinions on young people holding down work.

“Today I thought I would emphasise how important it is to have a job,” she said. “You know, I’ve been thinking about this. I’ve been an ambassador for being the ‘Job Queen’ for Australia and global for something like 45 years," she said.

“I just want to emphasise that if you have a job, you have dignity. You have a job, you have more respect and positive self esteem."

“If you have a job, you become financially (in)dependent and absolutely empowered. You can become more, enjoy more, have more and see more."

“So today, I’m going to say to you and say to myself ... let’s get a job, let’s get excited, let’s get that passion growing and I’ll see you at the top. Ciao for now.”

Given the current state of the job market for young Aussies in the wake of increased reliance on AI, many were quick to slam Ms Russo's comments.

Social media users said her comments were "hypocritical" and "arrogance personified" given that she made her fortune as a landlord and became a multimillionaire based off other people's employment.

“Yes watch Sarina, dressed in designer funk wear, as she meanders through the extravagant but ultimately aimless alleyways of the wealthy yet pointless. With each step, she peels off essential life lessons, like “I’m the jobs Queen; Get a job!” Classic. So tone deaf” one person wrote on Twitter.

“Standing outside the Westin Hotel telling people to get a job as if nobody’s thought of it. Last day of the comedy festival - no stars,” another wrote under her Instagram video.

This is not the first time Ms Russo' controversial comments caused a stir, attracting controversy two years ago after posting a video of herself telling victims of the devastating Queensland floods that “it’s the time to exercise”.

Ms Russo told the victims “fitness is everything” and to “just do it”.

“We’re here overlooking the most beautiful city called Brisbane and sadly last week we had massive floods – once in a hundred year flooding, and it called massive devastation,” she said to the camera.

“But you know, when things are going wrong and endorphins are low, this is the time you need to exercise.I really believe that fitness is everything.”

The hero police officer who shot Joel Cauchi after his killing spree has spoken out after the devastating incident.

NSW Police Inspector Amy Scott was confronted by the knife-wielding 40-year-old after he had fatally stabbed six people and injured several others at Bondi Junction Westfield on Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses of the incident recall hearing the officer shout for Cauchi to "put it down" before the knifeman charged at her, prompting her to fire her weapon and shoot him dead.

“Amy is content with what she had to do," Police Association of NSW boss Kevin Morton said.

“I spoke to her last night and again this morning and she said, ‘It was a night with not a lot of sleep’.”

Mr Morton said the officer, who he has known personally for years, was playing down the praise she had received after being dubbed a "hero" for her actions.

“She knows she has been tagged a hero but to her she was doing her job. I didn’t ask her about the exact incident, because she is yet to be formally interviewed,” he said.

“Everyone will be keeping an eye on her obviously, there will be a lot of support from everyone,’’ he said

She also drew praise from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and NSW Premier Chris Minns, as well as NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb.

“She showed enormous courage and bravery,” Ms Webb said.

Witnesses backed up the officer's actions at the shopping centre, as Bondi man Jason Dixon witnessed Inspector Scott's response firsthand.

“All she said was ‘Put it down’. Just once. Then she shot him in the chest and he went down,” Mr Dixon told The Sunday Telegraph.

“Then when he fell on the ground she was giving him CPR,” Mr Dixon said.

“She had to shoot him, because he just kept coming,” Mr Dixon said. “He had a knife and he wasn’t going to stop.

“He was advancing at her and he was running, coming to get someone else,” Mr Dixon said.

“She shot him once in the heart or the chest,” he said. “I’m glad she got him, because if she didn’t he would have stabbed her too.”

Inspector Scott will be formally interviewed by police later this week as part of the major investigation into the stabbing.

"Wokeness gone mad": Steve Price slams AO Australia Day boycott

Steve Price has slammed Australian Open organisers for choosing not to celebrate Australia Day for the second year in a row.

The decision came after the Victorian government axed its Australia Day parade last year, amid growing backlash from athletes about celebrating on January 26.

“This started last year and ended Australia Day celebrations, they used to feature fireworks, the playing of the national anthem and special musical events to mark the day at the tennis,” the Sky News host said.

“So we have First Nations day, no drama from me about that, then the organisers have set aside a day for Australian Open Pride Day, an Australian Open All Abilities Day and an Australian Open Glam Slam for the LGBTI+ folk that will run across January 26 to 28.

“You can’t make this stuff up.”

Price also slammed the AO's decision to move the induction day for the tennis player who made it into this year's Australian Tennis Hall of Fame.

The event normally takes place on January 26, but this year Lleyton Hewitt’s induction has been moved to the 24th of January.

“This year it’s going to be Lleyton Hewitt – you couldn’t get a more Australian Australian than Lleyton Hewitt,” Price said.

“They’ve changed the date of that event from Australia Day, when it used to be, to the 24th, two days earlier.

“This is just crazy wokeness gone mad.

“Can anyone at Tennis Australia defend this disgraceful snubbing of our national day by a tournament that carries the name of our nation," he ranted.

Price then slammed the AO organisers for their decision.

“It’s a pity the woke directors who run Tennis Australia don’t have the courage to drag the South African bloke running the organisation Craig Tiley into line and insist we recognise the great nation that lends its name to his tennis tournament," he said.

A few others have agreed with Price, including Journalist Joe Hildebrand, who said that the decision is “counter-productive” in terms of making any meaningful difference.

“The idea that these sorts of ridiculous virtue-signalling gestures are going to make any difference … is absolutely ridiculous – in fact, it puts people off even considering or wanting to address these issues,

“This sort of stuff is what cost the Yes vote its victory … and it’s just so counter-productive, self-destructive, idiotic – you could use any name.”

Radio Personality Tom Elliott, also called the move ridiculous.

“If you’re going to call yourself the Australian Open and it happens that our national day takes place during the tournament, you have to acknowledge Australia Day,” he said.

“Maybe the date will change down the track, but right now it’s January 26.”

Images: Getty/ Sky News
