Pirates of the Caribbean actor and former pro surfer killed in shark attack

Tamayo Perry, renowned surfer and actor known for his role in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, tragically lost his life in a shark attack off Oahu's North Shore on Sunday.

The 49-year-old was surfing near Goat Island when the incident occurred, as confirmed by Shayne Enright of the Honolulu Emergency Services Department.

Perry, who played a buccaneer in the popular movie franchise, had a distinguished career with appearances in films such as Blue Crush and the television series Hawaii Five-O. Beyond his acting career, Perry was celebrated as a former professional surfer and a beloved lifeguard.

Responding to an emergency call just before 1pm local time, personnel from Honolulu Ocean Safety, alongside the city's fire, police and emergency medical services departments, rushed to Malaekahana Beach. The caller reported seeing a man who appeared to have suffered shark bites. Lifeguards promptly brought Perry to shore, but he was pronounced dead upon arrival. In response to the attack, Ocean Safety personnel posted shark warnings in the area.

"Tamayo's personality was infectious, and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else more," said Honolulu Ocean Safety acting chief Kurt Lager at a news conference. "Tamayo was a legendary waterman and highly respected," added Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, describing Perry's death as "a tragic loss".

Perry, alongside his wife Emilia, ran the Oahu Surfing Experience, a business offering surfing lessons. According to his biography on the company's website, Perry surfed professionally for over 15 years, notably winning the Pipeline Master trials in 1999. He began his career as a lifeguard on the North Shore for the City and County of Honolulu Ocean Safety in July 2016. That same year, he appeared in Pirates of the Caribbean and an episode of Hawaii Five-0.

Perry's wife Emilia shared a heartfelt tribute to her lost husband on Instagram, writing: "We all want to be the hero of our own story, one of the redeeming characteristics of humanity is our desire to follow our convictions always and without fear. Few of us are able to truly be that hero, Tamayo Perry was is and will be forever.

"He was everyone’s big brother, stern and uncompromising with an infectious and kolohe smile. He was your rescuer in time of need, your safety when all things fell apart. He was a knight forged in the fires of the North Shore in the 90’s, his faith in Christ the rock upon which he stood. Few are those who truly follow in the footsteps of Jesus, Tamayo never took his eyes off the path.

"Tragic though his passing may be, he left this world doing what he loved where he loved to do it. We find strength in knowing he is in heaven with our Lord Jesus Christ, trading barrels at Pipeline with his friends that have gone before him."

The World Surf League also expressed their condolences in a statement: "We are deeply saddened to share that the surf community lost a beloved icon yesterday. A well-known surfer and lifeguard, Tamayo Perry, passed away after injuries from a shark attack that occurred on the East Side of Oahu. Tamayo was a Pipeline/Teahupo’o specialist, freesurfer, former competitor, and member of the WSL for many years. He became a lifeguard for the city and was a big part of the North Shore community. Our hearts go out to Tamayo’s family and friends."

Perry's passing has left a profound void in both the surfing and local communities, where he was deeply admired for his skills, charisma and generous spirit.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Tamayo Perry (@oahusurfingexperience)

Image: Walt Disney Studios | Instagram

Surfers not worried about shark attacks

The sight of a dorsal fin knifing through the waves might send many swimming for the shore, but a survey of surfers shows it won’t deter many from catching a wave.

A University of South Australia study published in Marine Policy reveals 44% of surfers say a shark sighting would not stop them from being in the water. While more than half of the 391 surfers surveyed had seen a shark while they out on the water, 60% were not afraid of the marine creatures.

The survey also revealed more surfers have been bitten by sharks than we think.

But the global survey of surfer attitudes towards sharks, undertaken by behavioural scientist Dr Brianna Le Busque, found surfers had generally positive views on these apex predators.

Le Busque told Cosmos, to date there has been very little research on surfers’ perceptions of and interactions with sharks.

“A lot of the shark policies, shark nets and things like that are implemented, in part to protect surfers. But there hasn’t really been a lot of research to actually ask them what they want,” she says.

Le Busque says the study may help to change people’s negative perceptions of sharks. This is important because fear of sharks can act as a barrier to conserving them.

“Shark conservation is important. As apex predators at the top of the food chain, if sharks become endangered or extinct this can have flow on effects for the entire ecosystem.”

Globally, 100 million sharks are killed each year with a quarter of shark species threatened by extinction.

But conserving sharks is complicated because they can harm humans, and many people fear them.

“When people are afraid of sharks, they don’t want sharks to be conserved … it’s also a driving motivation for having certain shark policies. So things like shark culls, shark nets, they are implemented because of people’s fears of sharks,” Le Busque says.

Le Busque says research indicates the public have a higher perception of risk when it comes to sharks, compared to the low likelihood of encountering one.

Surfers’ relaxed views on sharks contrasted with those of the wider public.

This was despite the survey finding quite a high share of surfers (17%) had been bitten, or knew someone who had been bitten by a shark. Le Busque says, this is quite a high percentage, higher than shark attack statistics suggest.

This article originally appeared on cosmosmagazine.com and was written by Petra Stock.

Image: Shutterstock

World champion surfer unleashes on “disrespectful” kids

World champion surfer Joel Parkinson has unleashed fury at a pair of vloggers he claimed were disrespecting victims of the floods.

Vloggers Paton and Steeze shared a video of themselves to Instagram sliding down a muddy hill near Duranbah Beach at Tweed Heads.

The video, which has since been viewed more than 10,000 times, shows the pair being angrily approached by the surfing legend telling them to show respect to the victims of the floods.

“That’s enough. Hey you f***ing idiots. Get the f*** off. People have lost their houses,” Parkinson yells.

“You should be more responsible you f***wits. You know people lost everything in these floods.”

“Oh settle down mate. Don’t bring that into it. This is not someone losing their house in the floods bro, so don’t do that,” one of the men responded.

The man continued to say that they knew people who had lost their homes.

Parkinson asked the young men where they live, before the filmer interjected telling his mate to let it go.

The video then cuts to the boys back at the top of the hill when Parkinson once again yells at them saying “they can’t do that’.

The older man behind the camera jumps in telling Parkinson “that’s enough”.

“Settle down. They’re having their fun alright. You’ve had your fun, you try to stop them from having their fun. We've had a gutful.

“Have fun boys, live.

“Mate we're here to have fun, they’re all having fun, no one’s hurting anyone or oppressing anyone except for you.”

The boys agree to sliding down one more time before heading home, when another man jumps at the cameraman prompting the boys to get up and defend him.

Parkinson attempts to calm the situation as the men all swear at each other.

'Have some respect,' the surfing legend says.

'You have some f***ing respect, look at my camera,' one of the vloggers replies, before

Parkinson calls it a 'piece of s***'.

Some viewers sided with the vloggers calling out Parkinson’s for allegedly doing the same thing last week.

“Floor was already f***ed. Parko he was doing the same thing last week I don’t see what the problem is,’ one wrote.

“With everything going on at the moment.. covid lockdowns floods this is nothing to get upset about! 66-year-old surfer retires in style

Anyone who remembers surfing when they were younger (or still does it to this day!) can tell you just how physically exhausting it can be, even when you’re at your peak fitness. So, you can imagine just how demanding it would be for 66-year-old Hawaiian big wave surfer Clyde Aikau.

If the name sounds familiar, you may have already been acquainted with Eddie Aikau, legendary surfer and older brother of Clyde. Ever since Eddie was lost at sea, the surfing community has continued to pay tribute to him with “The Eddie” annual event held in February.

But this would be the last time Clyde would compete in his brother’s memorial event, after which he announced his retirement.

Take a look at Clyde’s incredible last ride in the video above. While he doesn't exactly nail the exit, we think Eddie would still be very proud!

Related links:

Over-60s fitness gurus prove it’s never too late to get fit

Inspiring people who work full-time over 90

Great-grandmother walking from South Australia to Darwin

Six-foot shark lands on surfer’s board in Bondi

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water!

A pair of surfers have shared a terrifyingly close encounter with a six-foot shark on Bondi Beach.

Dean Norburn, a real estate agent, was taking a moment to enjoy a morning dip with two of his friends when the shark launched itself out of the water, landing in the middle of his board.

Mr Norburn told the Sydney Morning Herald, “There was a bit of a light rip so I was paddling in. As I was paddling in a little bit, I leant on my board on my hands on the rails. The next thing you know, something has brushed by me and has landed on my board. I was looking pretty closely at it from the angle I was at. It was probably about three to four inches (7-10 centimetres), maybe a bit more, from my face.”

Bondi Rescue Lifeguards confirmed the incident on Facebook, but downplayed the size of the shark in a post on Facebook, saying, “We had a small shark (6 foot) jump on a local surfer's board this morning then swim off under another surfer. The man was not injured. Lifeguards spoke to both men and cleared the water afterwards. Will be a very memorable surf for both guys.”

That being said, we wouldn’t really like to experience this kind of close encounter!

Related links:

Can you spot the Panda hidden in this picture?

16 vintage Christmas ads that will shock you

15 photos to brighten your day

A pair of brothers surfing on the south coast of New South Wales have taken a stunning image that shows the moment a wild seal decides to catch the perfect wave with a surfer.

Brothers Russell and Adam Quinn were hitting the surf in the Sussex Inlet when the courageous seal decided to hang ten and drop in on Russell’s wave. Adam, who had been photographing his brother surf from a jet ski, was on hand to capture this incredible moment.

“We see seals all the time,” Russell told the Illawarra Mercury. "It was just me and my brother out there, I was in the water and Adam was on the jetski with the camera. The seal was circling for a while and playing around.”

Adam’s photos show the playful seal exhibiting some serious courage, diving headfirst with the huge waves as Russell looks on in amazement. Having someone else drop-in on a wave you are catching is a common occurrence for surfers, but this is another thing altogether and Russell and Adam were originally concerned the animal mightn’t be so friendly.

“It’s a pretty sharky spot there, you kind of always see things flashing around under you, so it’s a relief when a seal pops up,” added Russell. “We see dolphins in the surf all the time but I’ve never seen a seal ride a wave before. I watched it catch the wave, it took off with me and rode the wave with me. I think it knew what it was doing.”

Hero Image Credit: Adam Quinn

Related links:

Baby seals rescued by Hawaiian scientists

Seal leaps onto family’s boat to escape killer whales

79-year-old man swims 800 metres to get to his wedding
