Sam Mac's surprising career move after becoming a father of two

Sam Mac has announced a surprising career move after becoming a father of two.

The Sunrise weatherman has released a heartwarming children's picture book titled Suddenly One, inspired by his now two-year-old daughter Margot.

Mac explained on The Morning Show on Tuesday that when Margot turned one, he was inspired by her milestone birthday to write some touching words about his firstborn.

“When Margot turned one, you want to celebrate that and all those little moments that happen in that first year so, I just jotted down some thoughts,” Mac explained to Larry Edmur and Kylie Gillies.

“(I was on a) long flight to Perth … (and) I thought, ‘Oh, maybe this could be a poem’. So, a few days later I refined it and posted it with some video to match the words and it had over a million views overnight."

“It really took me by surprise, and (publishing house) Penguin got in touch and said, ‘We think that this is a universal experience. Everyone gets excited about their little ones and those first milestones. Let’s turn it into a picture book’."

“So, over the past year, we’ve been in the process of picking the illustrator, the wonderful Deb Hudson, and refining the text.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

Mac said he hopes the book helped families connect, saying, “(I think it’s) for parents and grandparents to sit down and read it with their little ones.”

“I hope what comes from the book is a great connection point for families. Even if it would be a few years before she could fully understand it," he said.

"This project has been almost a year in the making & it has already brought me immense joy. The thought of grandparents or uncles or friends sharing this book with the little ones in their lives to celebrate their first birthday makes my heart sing!"

Image credits: The Morning Show / Instagram

Sonia Kruger in talks for surprise reboot

Sonia Kruger may soon take on a new role, with an insider telling Yahoo Lifestyle that Channel 10 is considering her for a reboot of The Golden Bachelor.

TV Blackbox reported that Channel Nine would be announcing The Golden Bachelor at its annual Upfronts event in October, and now it is reported that the network has eyes on Kruger to host the series.

"The word on the street is that Sonia could reboot The Golden Bachelor on Channel Nine in 2025," the source told Yahoo Lifestyle.

“Channel Nine loved working with Sonia and everyone would welcome her back with open arms. There is a real bidding war which will see two networks keen to lock her services down in the new year.”

Earlier this year, Channel 10 announced that they have cancelled The Bachelor, following 11 seasons, so news of a reboot on Nine could be just the thing for reality TV fans.

"The Bachelor is going to look very different to how Network 10 has been making the show," the insider told Yahoo Lifestyle.

They added that Nine wanted the show to look more "lux" and that executives are interested in the "class" Kruger would bring to the series.

"The ambition is to appeal to a wider audience and make it a yearly feature on the network. There is no reason it won't be as big as MAFS in a couple of years."

“The Channel Seven star is yet to hear what the lineup for 2025 will look like if she stays with the network but with Big Brother cancelled there is a hole in her contract that will need to be fixed if she is to be picked up again," they said.

Kruger previously left Channel Seven to take on rival network Channel Nine's reboot of Big Brother Australia in 2011, a move which was considered a "huge risk" at the time.

Image: Seven

Pauline Hanson's surprising act of kindness for struggling family

Pauline Hanson has revealed a surprising act of kindness for a struggling Queensland family, who have been battling the private healthcare system.

Nine year old Kadee Byrnes, from Yeppoon, about 740km north of Brisbane, has been on the public hospital waiting list for seven years waiting for the adenoid surgery she desperately needs.

The surgery is a procedure to remove the adenoids, small tissue lumps in the nasal cavity, to address her chronic tonsillitis.

While on the waitlist, Kadee had to repeat the fourth grade after missing so much school due to reoccurring infections.

After hearing of Kadee's plight, the One Nation senator said she was "disgusted" the young girl had to wait so long for surgery and promised to cover the cost of her private treatment.

Queensland Senator Pauline Hanson has promised to cover the surgery costs for a nine year old Yeppoon girl, who has been on the public hospital waiting list for more than seven years. https://t.co/WbYeQT6ZHu @CPenny_6 #7NEWS pic.twitter.com/AdToZNR6Ii

— 7NEWS Central Queensland (@7NewsCQ) July 29, 2024

"I'm grateful for the opportunity to help 9-year-old Kadee by covering the cost of her private treatment," Ms Hanson said on Tuesday.

"It is unacceptable that young Kadee was told she would have to repeat Grade 4 due to missing so many school days because of tonsillitis."

"Situations like this are sadly all too common and highlight the severe consequences of the Labor government's lack of investment in our public hospitals, especially outside South East Queensland."

Senator Hanson broke the happy news to Kadee's mother, Kahlia, at a speaking event in Roslyn Bay.

"Straight away, I said we're going to get this operation done. Dr Charlie Teo's surprising next move after Aussie surgery restrictions

One year after being slapped with restrictions that effectively stopped him from operating in Australia, Dr Charlie Teo is restarting his career overseas.

The neurosurgeon was investigated by Australia’s Health Care Complaints Commission, who last year placed restrictions on the surgeon after they discovered he had been operating on tumours that had been deemed "inoperable".

Now, one of China’s most respected neurosurgeons has thanked Australia for imposing such restrictions because it has allowed her country to benefit from the controversial surgeon’s ability to remove high-risk brain tumours.

Dr Teo has been operating regularly in China including on high profile VIPs, and at least eight other countries around the world, according to reports from the Sunday Telegraph.

An investigation has found Dr Teo has operated on 150 patients, with many of them being from Australia, in China, Spain, Germany, India, Switzerland, Brazil, Peru, South Africa, and Nepal since the restrictions effectively stopped him from operating in Australia.

In an interview from Beijing, Professor Ling Feng, Deputy Director of the China International Neuroscience Institute, said she is “not worried” about the restrictions imposed on Dr Teo a year ago for unsatisfactory conduct.

“I took a careful look into what happened over there. I don’t think it should be imputed to Charlie’s neglect of care and passion for the patients,” Professor Ling told the Sunday Telegraph.

“It is just a different view of the indications for surgery. Similar cases occur across the world. Instead, I ‘thank’ Australia for the restrictions on Charlie, which gave me the opportunity to work with him.”

In the past year, patients have travelled from Australia, Romania, Britain, Saudi Arabia, France, Indonesia, and Singapore to have Dr Teo operate.

Of those surgeries Dr Teo’s logbook documents one death, one “poor” outcome, three “fair outcomes”, 20 “good outcomes” and 145 cases have been documented as “excellent”.

Dr Teo says his results are better than ever and he feels terrible for patients in his own country that he can’t help, but hopes that he may one day be able to return to Australian operating rooms to help patients.

“All it would take is one sensible and brave person in one hospital somewhere in Australia to change the status quo,” Dr Teo said.

“Just one person to sit back and go ‘okay he might be an a**hole, he might be into money, he might be a bit of a cowboy, he might be all the things the media have said he might be, but the fact is that patients, Australian patients, some need him and he does operations that other people don’t do and most of those outcomes are good so what about we just drop the politics and allow him to operate in Australia?"

“That’s all it would take … some common sense for the greater good, not for his sake but for the sake of patients.”

The surprising reason commercial planes are painted white

Up until the middle of the last century, airplanes would fly through the sky unpainted as shiny silver tubes.

But now, we are so used to seeing plane bodies being painted white, with the exception of the airline’s logo and a splash of colour on the plane’s tail.

But this drastic look isn’t just about style and uniformity, as there is a simple reason why plane bodies are left plain.

First of all, white paint jobs will show wear and tear a lot quicker on huge commercial planes and while this might not be ideal for a car or house, it's perfect for planes.

From takeoff to landing, a plane goes through a lot. While the aircrafts are always deemed safe for flying, it'll likely suffer minor cosmetic damages as it hurtles through the sky at 900 kilometres per hour.

Due to the frequent minor chips and scratches a plane has inflicted, using the white paint helps engineers and maintenance teams to spot any of these issues with ease.

Another reason that white is uniform in the skies is because white paint is going to fade at a much slower rate than a darker shade.

As planes fly above the clouds, they're exposed to a lot of UV rays which speeds up the process of the paint fading.

Lastly, it's been found that birds can spot planes against the sky easier when they're painted all-white, as sometimes in rare occasions, birds can pose a safety risk.

It wasn’t until 50 years ago that airlines started painting their planes, with Air France being credited for starting the movement in the 1970s.

"Since Air France introduced the first 'Euro-white' livery in 1976, the all-white fuselage look has become increasingly standard for the world's airlines," aviation historian Shea Oakley told Travel + Leisure.

The surprising reason why pilots don’t have beards

When walking through an airport before you board a flight, it's very common to pass a pilot or two walking around the terminals.

But there’s one thing you may not have noticed that unites the male pilots, and it's not just their clean cut uniforms.

While trendy facial hair is very common amongst men, it seems that pilots are swapping the beards and moustaches for a more clean cut look.

And there is one key reason for the sleek look: safety.

It turns out sporting a beard could lead to issues with using oxygen masks, with the hair preventing a seal from forming.

A study in 1987 titled The Influence of Beards on Oxygen Mask Efficiency outlined how facial hair could impede the efficiency of masks, with pilots still adhering to the procedure.

"A Department of Navy study reported an average inboard leakage of 16 to 67 percent for military-type crew oxygen masks when tested with subjects wearing beards to altitudes of 18,000 feet," the report noted.

"The data resulting from these tests indicated that decrement in performance does occur when facial hair is present along the sealing surface of crew oxygen masks."

The Civil Aviation Authority in New Zealand told Stuff Travel that there are no "explicit written rules specifically addressing pilot dress codes in its regulatory framework".

"The focus of the CAA rules is primarily on operational, technical, and safety requirements for aviation activities," said a spokesperson.

"However, individual airlines may have their own internal policies and standards regarding pilot dress codes. These policies ensure a professional appearance and may be part of broader company procedures and safety protocols."

Air New Zealand's head of flight operations, Captain Hugh Pearce, said the airline allows moustaches and goatees, "but not full beards".

"This is a safety-driven policy to ensure the best fit and most effective use of an oxygen mask if deployed, and is also recommended practice from mask manufacturers.

"The safety of our customers and crew is our number one priority and it is of utmost importance that our pilots are equipped to act in the unlikely event of an emergency."

Jetstar goes one step further, with goatees also getting the snip: "For safety reasons our pilots don't have beards or goatees. This is to ensure the best possible seal on quick donning oxygen masks."

Never say never: Ash Barty's surprising new career move

Ash Barty is set for a return to Wimbledon this year, but not in the way you'd expect.

The Aussie legend who retired from competitive tennis in 2022 at the age of 25, has been persistent about not returning to the court.

Since her retirement, she married her long-term partner Garry Kissick, and the pair welcomed their son Hayden in July 2023. She has also written some books and played a few golf tournaments around the world.

In November 2022, when promoting her memoir My Dream Time, Barty was asked if she’d ever consider a move into the commentary box, to which she replied: “No, never.”

But now, she is making her return into the spotlight, particularly the commentary box as she has been announced as part of the BBC’s team for Wimbledon.

“A host of Wimbledon champions will be joining the studio," BBC’s content boss Charlotte Moore said.

Barty will be joining Nick Kyrgios and former Aussie Wimbledon champ Pat Cash for the Summer of Sport event in London.

“This will include John McEnroe, Martina Navratilova, Billie Jean King and Pat Cash, alongside Tim Henman, Tracey Austin, Annabel Croft and Johanna Konta," Moore said.

“Joining the line-up this year will be 2021 champion Ashleigh Barty and, if he’s not playing, 2022 Wimbledon finalist Nick Kyrgios, so anything could happen there.”

While her attitude towards taking a commentary role has changed, she has not changed her stance on making a comeback on the court.

“I don’t have the time – I don’t have the time to train, I don’t have the time to prepare, and I have so many great memories out on this court and now I just get to create new memories,” she said late last year.

“I’m certainly not coming out of retirement.”

Image: JONO SEARLE/EPA-EFE/ Shutterstock Editorial

Surprising causes of most deaths on Australia’s beaches

Worried about sharks at the beach? Turns out these fearsome fish are not the biggest killers on Australia’s coastline when it comes to non-drowning deaths.

Instead, depending on a person’s age, it’s more likely that a heart problem or misadventure will lead to mortality, according to research from Surf Life Saving Australia, whose red-and-gold clad patrol teams provide patrol and rescue services for beaches across the country.

More than half of non-drowning deaths in the decade between July 2012 and June 2022 were caused by cardiac-related conditions. These accounted for 319 of the 616 deaths along Australia’s coasts.

Traumatic and collision injuries – such as blunt force trauma – were the next most common cause of death, accounting for fewer than 1 in 6 deaths.

Falls accounted for 1 in 10 fatalities, with marine animal interactions 1 in 20.

But the data has other insights beyond cause of death. Males were far more likely to be killed on the coast; victims in almost 9 out of 10 cases.

And while people aged over 50 account for most deaths, primarily through cardiac conditions, those below the age of 50 are overrepresented in all other mortality cases.

This, the researchers say, is an important consideration when interpreting the data, as deaths from any cause are highest among older people.

“Our research showed that males were 5.2 times more likely to die than females, with younger populations found to die disproportionately along the coast with the primary causes being falls and traumatic/collision injuries,” says the study’s lead researcher, Sean Kelly.

Kelly and the other SLSA researchers point to those all-cause mortality comparisons. People aged 70+ have 118 times greater all-cause death rate than people aged 16-24.

But when looking at non-drowning coastal deaths, it’s only 6 times greater, highlighting disproportionate deaths among young people in these environments.

They suggest this is due to higher levels of coastal visitation and the type of activities young people participate in. Where a person lives also matters.

“Those living in or visiting rural and remote areas were also found to be at higher risk, largely due to poorer access to services and longer incident response times,” Kelly says.

“While sharks are often top-of-mind for those visiting the beach, all marine creatures including sharks and jellyfish only made up 5% of non-drowning deaths and less than 2% of overall coastal deaths.”

The study was published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health.

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. Daughter's incredible gesture surprises her cancer-stricken mother

A brave mother fighting cancer has burst into tears at her daughter's amazing display of solidarity, as her mum continues to battle through chemotherapy.

Tracy Mulcahy has been fighting a devastating diagnosis of stage four high-grade ovarian cancer and had started to lose her hair after relentless chemo treatment.

Tracy and her daughter Sophie headed to their local hairdressers, where they have become like family after seven years, where Sophie was given the task of shaving her mum's head.

To everyone's surprise, Sophie was handed the razor and decided to shave off her own long blonde hair in an emotional display of solitary and strength.

Both women burst into tears and held one another, while there was not a dry eye in the salon from other clients and hairdressers.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ⚡️SOUTH WEST BLONDE SPECIALIST ⚡️ (@bambiblonde__)

The heartwarming moment was captured by the Bambi Blonde salon and posted to their Instagram, where the post racked up hundreds of thousands of likes and comments of support from all over the world.

"The whole salon was in tears," owner Claire Lovett said.

Sophie has since revealed she decided to do it because she didn't want her mother to "go through this alone".

"She means the absolute world to me.
Victoria Police found themselves facing embarrassment recently when one of their top-ranking officers, Glenn Weir, was caught speeding.

Weir, who serves as Victoria’s Road Policing Assistant Commissioner, was captured by a hidden speed camera in an undercover police car on February 29, traveling at 58km/h in a 50km/h zone.

What makes this incident particularly noteworthy is not just the fact that a high-ranking police officer was caught breaking the law, but also the response Weir himself has taken. Despite being eligible to have the charge downgraded to a warning due to his clean driving record, Weir has chosen to accept the consequences – a $337 fine and a single demerit point penalty.

In a statement addressing the incident, Weir expressed remorse and took full responsibility for his actions. He acknowledged the severity of the mistake, especially given his position as an advocate for road safety throughout his career.

"I take full responsibility for this error and am mortified it has occurred," Weir said. "I’ve spent my entire career advocating for road safety and this incident proves nobody is immune from making a mistake on the road."

Weir’s willingness to own up to his mistake sets an important example for accountability, not just within the police force but for all members of society. Moreover, his case underscores the importance of adhering to speed limits, with Victoria Police having long advocated for the correlation between speeding and road accidents. According to their data, speed is one of the leading causes of car crashes in the state, with the rise in the state’s road toll by almost 12% February 2023 to February 2024 further highlighting the urgency of addressing speeding and other reckless driving behaviours.

Weir’s decision to accept the consequences of his actions demonstrates integrity and a commitment to upholding the principles of road safety.

Image: 7 News

Attempts to access Kate Middleton’s medical records are no surprise. Such breaches are all too common

Bruce Baer Arnold, University of Canberra

The alleged data breach involving Catherine, Princess of Wales tells us something about health privacy. If hospital staff can apparently access a future queen’s medical records without authorisation, it can happen to you.

Indeed it may have already happened to you, given many breaches of health data go under the radar.

Here’s why breaches of health data keep on happening.

What did we learn this week?

Details of the alleged data breaches, by up to three staff at The London Clinic, emerged in the UK media this week. These breaches are alleged to have occurred after the princess had abdominal surgery at the private hospital earlier this year.

The UK Information Commissioner’s Office is investigating. Its report should provide some clarity about what medical data was improperly accessed, in what form and by whom. But it is unlikely to identify whether this data was given to a third party, such as a media organisation.

Health data isn’t always as secure as we’d hope

Medical records are inherently sensitive, providing insights about individuals and often about biological relatives.

In an ideal world, only the “right people” would have access to these records. These are people who “need to know” that information and are aware of the responsibility of accessing it.

Best practice digital health systems typically try to restrict overall access to databases through hack-resistant firewalls. They also try to limit access to specific types of data through grades of access.

This means a hospital accountant, nurse or cleaner does not get to see everything. Such systems also incorporate blocks or alarms where there is potential abuse, such as unauthorised copying.

But in practice each health records ecosystem – in GP and specialist suites, pathology labs, research labs, hospitals – is less robust, often with fewer safeguards and weaker supervision.

This has happened before

Large health-care providers and insurers, including major hospitals or chains of hospitals, have a worrying history of digital breaches.

Those breaches include hackers accessing the records of millions of people. The Medibank data breach involved more than ten million people. The Anthem data breach in the United States involved more than 78 million people.

Hospitals and clinics have also had breaches specific to a particular individual. Many of those breaches involved unauthorised sighting (and often copying) of hardcopy or digital files, for example by nurses, clinicians and administrative staff.

For instance, this has happened to public figures such as singer Britney Spears, actor George Clooney and former United Kingdom prime minister Gordon Brown.

Indeed, the Princess of Wales has had her medical privacy breached before, in 2012, while in hospital pregnant with her first child. This was no high-tech hacking of health data.

Hoax callers from an Australian radio station tricked hospital staff into divulging details over the phone of the then Duchess of Cambridge’s health care.

Tip of the iceberg

Some unauthorised access to medical information goes undetected or is indeed undetectable unless there is an employment dispute or media involvement. Some is identified by colleagues.

Records about your health might have been improperly sighted by someone in the health system. But you are rarely in a position to evaluate the data management of a clinic, hospital, health department or pathology lab.

So we have to trust people do the right thing.

How could we improve things?

Health professions have long emphasised the need to protect these records. For instance, medical ethics bodies condemn medical students who share intimate or otherwise inappropriate images of patients.

Different countries have various approaches to protecting who has access to medical records and under what circumstances.

In Australia, for instance, we have a mix of complex and inconsistent laws that vary across jurisdictions, some covering privacy in general, others specific to health data. There isn’t one comprehensive law and set of standards vigorously administered by one well-resourced watchdog.

In Australia, it’s mandatory to report data breaches, including breaches of health data. This reporting system is currently being updated. But this won’t necessarily prevent data breaches.

Instead, we need to incentivise Australian organisations to improve how they handle sensitive health data.

The best policy nudges involve increasing penalties for breaches. This is so organisations act as responsible custodians rather than negligent owners of health data.

We also need to step-up enforcement of data breaches and make it easier for victims to sue for breaches of privacy – princesses and tradies alike.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
