Emirates takes cheeky swipe at other airlines in new safety video

Emirates have taken a cheeky swipe at Qantas, Air New Zealand and British Airways with their new “no nonsense” in-flight safety video.

The Dubai-based airline took a different approach to other major airlines, saying they chose not to include dancers and singers for its in-flight entertainment because they “take your safety seriously”.

“Hello and welcome on board your Emirates flight today,” a flight attendant says at the start of the four minute video.

“This is your no-nonsense safety video. We do not have dancers breaking into song, characters from movies, or celebrities trying to be funny I’m afraid.”

Another cabin crew member then chips in, “But at Emirates, safety always comes first. So it’s important that we take you through some safety features before takeoff. And then you can all get back to our award-winning entertainment system.”

The decision to stick to the basics for such an important video has been praised online, with many comparing the video to others by competing airlines.

“Excellent video. No fuss, no faff, just informative and not distracting. These videos are about safety first and foremost, not entertainment,” wrote one fan.

“Emirates got it right. This is THE safety video, simple and comprehensive which it should be,” agreed another.

“This video is sending a message to other airlines,” stated a third.

Emirates has gone in the opposite direction to its Aussie partner Qantas, as a safety video from the Flying Kangaroo went viral earlier this year for all the wrong reasons.

The video was widely panned for being “elitist” and “sexist”, while skimming over vital safety information, as one person on social media wrote, “I’d prefer just focus on, oh I dunno, in flight safety during the in-flight safety video? “Why do we need a long video with all this added stuff?”

The video, which replaced an earlier retro video released in 2020 that marked the airline’s 100th birthday, features frequent flyers and Qantas staff delivering the pre-flight safety announcement from their favourite “magic places” around the world.

"No disrespect": Home and Away star's swipe at Robert Irwin's Logie nomination

Home and Away veteran Lynne McGranger has taken a savage swipe at Robert Irwin, who has earned his first Gold Logie nomination.

The young wildlife warrior is among a group of Aussie TV old-hands in the running for the 2024 Gold Logie, with the 20-year-old being the youngest male ever nominated for the award.

Also battling it out for the Gold is Larry Emdur, Andy Lee, Asher Keddie, Julia Morris, Sonia Kruger, and ABC's Tony Armstrong.

The nomination comes hot on the heels of Irwin's TV debut as co-host of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me out of Here! alongside Julia Morris, as he took over from Dr Chris Brown for the 2024 season.

After Robert's nomination was announced, despite how well the new season of I'm A Celeb was received, many wondered how someone with so little TV experience could find himself in the running for the award.

One of those skeptics was Home and Away actress Lynne McGranger, who made a cheeky swipe towards Robert when commenting in support of her Channel Seven colleague Larry Emdur who is up for the award for the first time.

"I'm sorry but ol'mate Irwin has been on telly for a bloody minute!! No disrespect intended. #Lazforgold 🫶🏾🥇😍" she wrote on Larry's Instagram post, with over 300 people liking the comment.

The comment came after Larry shared a screenshot of a message he was sent, with someone congratulating him on the nomination but telling him they'd be voting for Irwin.

Lynne's rogue comment was met with mainly support from people.

"You said what everyone is thinking," one person said. "I agree 💯 #Lazforgold all the way! No disrespect intended for Irwin … Larry has my vote 🙌 he truly deserves to win 🥇," another commented.

"You have my first vote ever today, only for you Larry, for the laughter that lights up my life!" another dedicated fan said.

Lynne's comments weren't the first time someone called out Robert's nomination, after sister Bindi Irwin was quick to tease on Instagram.

Bindi took to social media to share a cheeky throwback post of her clutching her own Silver Logie in 2008, for Most Popular New Female Talent for her work in Bindi the Jungle Girl.

“Hey Australia, vote for my awesome brother so he can catch up to me 16 years later …” she captioned the post.

"At least mine's gold," Robert teased, to which Bindi replied "You haven't won it yet..." alongside a laughing emoji.

"He is underneath us": Kyle Sandilands' savage swipe at Ben Fordham

Kyle Sandilands took a savage swipe at 2GB radio host Ben Fordham on Thursday morning, after his KIIS FM show with Jackie O won this year's radio ratings.

The Kyle and Jackie O show was ranked the number one breakfast show over Fordham's show five out of seven times in this year's surveys, with Fordham coming in close second with a 16.2 per cent share compared to the duo's 16.3 per cent share.

"If you want to know what happened to Ben Fordham, he is underneath us," Sandilands said during his show on Thursday.

"It's like having sex with someone and they die. That's Ben. Ben is the dead person."

After the savage swipe, Sandilands gave a shout out to all of the employees working with him.

"Once again, to our own staff, I've got to thank you all. We retain the number one overall position as the largest greatest most listened to radio show in the history of Australian radio," he added.

As his colleagues cheered and applauded in the studio, Sandilands added: "Calm down now. So the biggest most listened to show ever in the entire history of radio, we are that.

"Also the biggest radio station in the country well done for the whole team."

The Kyle and Jackie O show have 797,000 people tuning in each week, with KIIS 1065 ranked as the number one radio station in Sydney.

"It's another fantastic day for us at ARN," their Chief Content Officer Duncan Campbell said in a statement.

"The positive momentum from the last survey has continued and it's great to see Kyle and Jackie O maintain their lead over Ben Fordham on 2GB."

"The pair have had a phenomenal year – they not only remain unbeaten as the #1FM Breakfast show but have now held the #1 overall spot in Sydney for five out of seven surveys this year, meaning they've officially won 2023!" he added.

The last time 2GB's Ben Fordham Live beat K the duo in radio ratings was in July, after months of coming in close.

Fordham and Sandilands are actually good friends behind the scenes despite roasting and playing pranks on each other.

Images: Instagram/ KIIS FM/ 2GB

Kyle's cheeky swipe at Ben Fordham after ratings victory

Kyle Sandilands has shared the cheeky text he sent to Ben Fordham after the Kyle and Jackie O Show dominated in the radio ratings.

The KIIS co-hosts knocked the dominant 2GB host off the number one spot in Tuesday’s GfK ratings, increasing their total audience share to 14.9 per cent, up 2.1 percentage points.

Meanwhile Fordham, who took over as host from Alan Jones in 2020, fell just behind with 14.8 per cent total audience share, down 2.1 per cent.

As 2GB have held the title of ‘Sydney’s top-rating breakfast show’ for more than 15 years, Kyle and Jackie O's ratings victory is an impressive feat for the veteran broadcasting duo.

Speaking to news.com.au, the 51-year-old shock jock said he couldn’t help but rub salt in Fordham’s wound after hearing the news.

“I sent him a text saying ‘Sorry Ben … x’, and he wrote back, ‘How did you go?’, because obviously I know everything in radio, he’s only new,” Sandilands joked.

He added, “So I said, ‘We beat you by a little bit. By an ants d**k. And he wrote nothing back. I told him in the middle of his show. [But] I did it very nicely, I didn’t gloat and carry on. Just placed it in front of him.”

The broadcasting duo have had a successful few weeks, after being inducted into the Hall of Fame at the Australian Commercial Radio Awards last month.

Jean Kittson's departing swipe at Ronnie

Comedian Jean Kittson has spoken out against her teammate, former Block star Ronnie Caceres, and his tasteless behaviour after she was fired from Celebrity Apprentice Australia.

Kittson said she was “disappointed” that Caceres made a joke that she had dementia in front of several business executives from software company MYOB during her final challenge as the project manager.

“Did you get that? Do you know how to spell that, MYOB?” he asked her. After continuing to speak over her, he joked, “Sorry, she’s got dementia.”

“I didn’t like what happened in the last task with Ronnie,” she said in an exclusive interview with Nine.

“It was disappointing, because before that I hadn’t really seen that side. He really doesn’t have to do that.”

Though Caceres later apologised for his comments and said he was being a “smart a**e”, he went on to admit to the cameras that he was “going to say anything and do anything in my power not to get fired”.

Kittson pointed out that his behaviour was part of a larger issue of how people are treated as they age.

“There’s a storyline that goes… you end up in the over 60s and you’re done for, life’s over,” the 67-year-old said.

“The older you get, the less heard you are, the less seen you are. Mee-ow! Grace Tame’s latest swipe at PM

Grace Tame has taken another swipe at Prime Minister Scott Morrison, after he shared a seemingly innocent selfie of his pet cat Charlie recently, who appeared not impressed…or you know, however cats are supposed to look.

“You’ve met Buddy before, but this is Charlie," wrote the PM. "He’s been part of our family for almost ten years. However, Medvedev's poise broke post-match in interviews, taking issue with some people in the crowd for booing or cheering between serves when two-times Australian Open champion turned tennis presenter Jim Courier asked him how he kept his emotions in check.

"Sorry, I can't hear you," Medvedev said. "Show some respect for Jim Courier, he won here. Let him speak, please, if you respect somebody, at least respect Jim Courier."

Medvedev then further admonished the Melbourne Park crowd in an interview with Eurosport.

"Break point, second serve and people are cheering like you already made a double fault. That's just disappointing," he said.

"It's not everybody who is doing it but those who are doing it probably have a low IQ.

"It's not good for the game I think to do it, because probably people don't know, but when you're getting ready for the second serve, it's a tough moment."
Despite admitting the need for the crowd to observe etiquette at times, Kyrgios said he thought rowdy crowds were good for the evolution of the sport.

"I thought the atmosphere was awesome," Kyrgios said.

"You've got, like, you know, the most entertaining player playing in his home slam on Rod Laver, you'd expect the crowd to be like that.
Karl Stefanovic appeared to take issue with the Russian tennis star's comments, as he blasted Medvedev on the Today Show on Friday morning.

“Daniil Medvedev, my accountant has a better personality,” Karl said.

“Daniil Medvedev, he makes Ivan Lendl look like Beyonce. Daniil Medvedev, Terminator 4 had more facial expressions.”

He added: “Insulting the fans like that – they weren’t actually booing him. He misunderstood what was happening.”

Mark Latham takes swipe at Lisa Wilkinson

NSW One Nation leader Mark Latham took multiple swipes at journalist Lisa Wilkinson in NSW Parliament on Wednesday, claiming she’s “always been about the money” and couldn’t leave Western Sydney “fast enough”.

Speaking under parliamentary privilege, Latham claimed Wilkinson was “reinventing herself as a victim of the gender pay gap at Channel 9”. He was referring to Wilkinson’s recently released memoir It Wasn’t Meant To Be Like This, in which she talks about her abrupt exit from Channel 9 in 2017. In her memoir, she revealed that she was sacked over the phone while shopping at Woolworths.

Latham said that one of Wilkinson’s old classmates had contacted him to say that it had “always been about the money” with her. Latham alleged that he said, “We went to Campbelltown High together and she couldn’t get out of here fast enough. She’s always been as tight as all get out, it’s always about the money and the victimhood.”

Latham went on this tirade during the Private Members’ Statements part of the day, where sitting MPs can make statements on “matters that concern their electorates or are of local significance”. He accused Wilkinson of having a “PhD in victimology” and said that she had “played the victim card” while promoting her book.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Lisa Wilkinson (@lisa_wilkinson)

Latham claimed that his comments about Wilkinson related to a discussion about the gender pay gap, despite not discussing the gender pay gap at any other point during his speech.

In her memoir, Wilkinson claimed that her Today co-host Karl Stefanovic was offered a five-year deal with Nine worth at least $2 million per year, while she was being offered around $780,000, and her deal was only for two years.

She said that the pay disparity was “so off the charts that no-one would have believed it.”

Latham also criticised Wilkinson for crying about her “first world problems” while “posting a picture from her Mosman mansion, with smudged mascara, feigning distress, while also carefully – in a classic product placement – posing with copies of Mr Wilkinson’s ghostwritten books in front of her.”

‘Mr Wilkinson’ refers to Wilkinson’s husband, writer Peter FitzSimons, who is one of Australia’s most prolific non-fiction writers.

Latham also took aim at Wilkinson’s work as editor of Dolly and Cleo magazines, saying, “there’s never any mention of the plight of migrant women or poorly-paid factory jobs or sweatshops, there’s never any mention of the Indigenous women having the life beaten out of them in country NSW hellholes.

“If this is feminism then God help the women of the world.”

Image: Brook Mitchell/Getty Images, Don Arnold/WireImage

"Not SAS fit": Shane Warne cops another swipe from Jackson

SAS Australia star Jackson Warne has taken a dig once more at his famous father Shane Warne.

The 21-year-old said that his father wouldn’t be able to compete as a recruit in the military-style show SAS Australia that he is currently on.

“I don’t think he’d be able to jump out of the chopper, I don’t think he would’ve done initiation,” Jackson said on Nova 96.9’s Fitzy & Wippa.

“But the cardio and the lifting, he might have got into shape? But even his cricketing days, he was fit, but I don’t think he was SAS fit,” he said.

The young star continued by saying his mother, Simone Callahen would have definitely been able to compete in the freezing “cold water challenges”.

“She’s crazy with that stuff. I was doing it with her leading up to the show just to get used to it and adapt,” he explained.

Jackson went through a gruelling interrogation on the show, which was aired on Tuesday night.

When director Ant Middleton questions Jackson, 21, on who is he, and discovering he is cricket legend Shane Warne’s son, he asks him “what the f***” he is doing there.

“To test myself … and I want him (Shane) to be really proud of me, by pushing myself to the absolute limit physically and mentally.”

Ant asks: “What’s it like living in your dad’s shadow? Anything you make of yourself will just be cast over by your dad right?”

Jackson said it was “frustrating” his living as under his father’s shadow during the interrogation.

“It’s been pretty frustrating my whole life. Whenever I walk into a room or meet someone it’s always, ‘Oh that’s Shane Warne’s son Jackson’. It’s never, ‘it’s Jackson’. I just want to be Jackson.

“Doing this I know I can prove to everyone that no matter how easy my childhood was I can still do the tough stuff, I can still push myself physically and mentally.”

“That’s why you’re here isn’t it? That makes sense,” Ant says.

Jackson said he found it hard to interact with people, whether it was in a crowd or a small group of people.

“I just don’t feel comfortable” he said, claiming he doesn’t know what they would be thinking or assuming of him.

“Drop that sh*t behind you and forget it, you have an opportunity. You’re hiding and slivering away and talking yourself out of it. Everyone is on an equal plate in there,” Mark ‘Billy’ Billingham explains to him.

“Pick your head up, you constantly have your head down,” says Ant, claiming that he needs more confidence. “Take your head out of you’re a** and get among it.”

“I kind of wish in another reality that I wasn’t Shane Warne’s son,” Jackson adds to the camera.

"Stay inside silly": Nick Kyrgios takes a gentle swipe at former partner's quarantine photo

There isn’t much to do during the global sporting shutdown, which is why many athletes are spending their time on social media.

And that includes Nick Kyrgios.

Kyrgios took to Instagram to send a cheeky message to a female tennis star.

The star’s former doubles partner Amanda Anisimova posted a photo of herself on Instagram at the beach, writing: “When your backyard is a beach #quarantine”.

Kyrgios saw the photo and commented: “Stay inside silly.”

View this post on Instagram

When your backyard is a beach #quarantine

A post shared by Amanda Kay Victoria (@amandaanisimova) on Mar 18, 2020 at 12:25pm PDT

The 24-year-old was referencing the fact that nearly a third of the world’s population is in lockdown, with governments urging the public to stay inside and only leave the house when absolutely necessary.

While he may have been joking, a number of other Instagram followers appeared to seriously question Anisimova’s actions.

Kyrgios and Anisimova have shared a special friendship for a long time, with the Aussie tennis player previously speaking about her before they played mixed doubles together.

“She’s an amazing person. I’m just looking forward to go out there and hopefully – I mean, she lost first round. I know it’s not going to be easy for her to be around the tournament,” he said.

“Hopefully I can get her up, bring some good vibes. Hopefully, we can do well. I think we can. She's an amazing player. I'm looking forward to it.

“I've been excited for this for like a month and a half. I'm like a little kid at the moment. I'm pretty excited.”
