Nick Kyrgios dealt another career blow

Tennis bad boy Nick Kyrgios has been dropped by both the BBC and ESPN ahead of this year’s Wimbledon tournament, in a double blow to the 30-year-old as he continues to battle ongoing injury setbacks.

Reports surfaced on Wednesday revealing the BBC has decided not to include Kyrgios in its broadcast team when coverage begins on June 30. The move comes a year after his controversial debut as a pundit for the network, which drew both praise and backlash from audiences and public figures.

Adding to the disappointment, The Telegraph has also reported that Kyrgios will not feature in ESPN’s Wimbledon coverage, despite his recent commentary roles with the American broadcaster during the Australian Open in both 2024 and 2025.

The former world No.13 has faced a difficult run of weeks, pulling out of the French Open last month due to a flare-up of a knee injury that also forced him to withdraw from this year’s Wimbledon. On Instagram, Kyrgios shared his frustration and assured fans he was working hard on his recovery:

“Just wanted to give everyone a quick update – I’ve hit a small setback in my recovery and unfortunately won’t make it back for grass season this year… This is just a bump in the road though, and I’m already working hard to get back stronger than ever.”

Kyrgios hasn’t played at Wimbledon since his memorable run to the final in 2022, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. Last year, with no plans to compete, he joined the BBC’s commentary team, offering insights that divided opinion. While some fans appreciated his frank analysis and distinctive personality, others criticised his laid-back delivery and flamboyant fashion.

More seriously, his appointment in 2023 was condemned by women's rights groups and politicians due to a past domestic assault charge involving his former partner Chiara Passari. Kyrgios pleaded guilty, but the charge was later dismissed. Among his critics was UK MP Caroline Nokes, chair of the Women and Equalities Committee, who slammed the BBC for the hire, calling it “a disgrace” and accusing the broadcaster of showing “utter contempt” for women.

At the time, the BBC defended its decision in a statement, saying it did not condone Kyrgios' past behaviour and that his involvement was strictly limited to tennis commentary.

A source close to Kyrgios has since claimed his absence from this year’s commentary box was influenced by his desire to compete at Wimbledon in 2024 – hopes that were dashed by injury.

As he continues his recovery, Kyrgios remains a polarising figure in the tennis world – equally capable of commanding attention with a racquet or a microphone, whether on court or off.

Images: Instagram

Pope serves up hilarious banter with tennis' world number one

Mayhem, mirth and match-point energy erupted inside the Vatican Wednesday as world No.1 tennis star Jannik Sinner met Pope Leo XIV, the newly appointed, tennis-loving American pope, for what may be the holiest pre-match warm-up in Italian Open history.

The two racquet-swinging celebrities exchanged gifts, laughs and playful jabs – though thankfully, no actual serves were fired indoors (a mercy for the priceless 15th-century frescoes).

Ahead of his quarter-final showdown with Casper Ruud in Rome, Sinner, fresh off a match against Francisco Cerundolo, visited the Vatican armed with racquets and respect. “Pleasure to meet you, it’s an honour,” Sinner told the Pope in Italian. The Pope, a self-confessed racquet-head and the first American to wear the papal whites was quick to size up the holy hardware.

“This is the racquet you play with?” asked Pope Leo, eyeing Sinner’s sacred gear.

“Yes, this is very, very similar,” Sinner replied, diplomatically avoiding divine confusion over string tension.

“Only the colour is a little different, but the rest is the same.”

“Wimbledon would let me play!” the Pope cracked, before adding (surely to the horror of Vatican furniture conservators everywhere)“Do you want to play a little bit?”
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Robert Irwin announces new Hollywood career move

The ballroom just got a little more... reptilian.

Robert Irwin, the 21-year-old Aussie wildlife warrior and part-time crocodile whisperer, has officially signed on for the upcoming season of Dancing With The Stars US. And how did he announce it? By strutting shirtless onto a stage in Los Angeles with a snake around his neck like it was just another Tuesday.

The announcement came during Hulu’s Get Real event, where Robert delivered an enthusiastic (and slightly slippery) surprise to the crowd. Cheers erupted, though it’s unclear if they were for Robert, the snake, or the possibility of a paso doble performed in khaki.

Robert, who grew up watching his sister Bindi Irwin twirl and samba her way to victory on Season 21 of the show, shared his excitement, saying: “I had these little dreams, going, ‘One day’ and now that dream is a reality and I am over the moon.”

Which, we can assume, is also how the snake felt about its brief moment of fame.

Taking to Instagram, Robert confirmed the dream was, in fact, no hallucination caused by excessive exposure to eucalyptus.

"It's official, I'm heading to Hollywood for Dancing With The Stars Season 34," he wrote. "This has been a dream of mine since I was a little kid watching my sister's incredible journey on the show. I cannot believe it is about to become a reality. So grateful."

Naturally, fans flooded the comments with well-wishes, excitement and at least one person probably asking, “Is the snake going to dance too?”

Even the official DWTS account chimed in with a warm “Welcome to the DWTS fam”.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Robert Irwin (@robertirwinphotography)

But the pressure is real. Bindi Irwin won her season at just 17 years old, leaving Robert with some big dancing shoes to fill – and possibly a pair of backup snakes. Her most iconic moment? A moving contemporary tribute to their late father, Steve Irwin, that had the judges, the audience and half the internet sobbing into their glitter.

Bindi said at the time: "What shaped me the most would probably be when my dad passed away. It's been nine years and I've never really dwelled on that point. I think I'm ready to tell that story."

So, the bar is high. Emotionally and choreographically.

While Robert’s signature style has been more khaki-and-cobra than sequins-and-salsa, we eagerly await his transformation into a glittery, rhinestone-studded dance machine. Will he bring more snakes? Will he attempt a tango with a tarantula? Will he rip his shirt off mid-routine like it’s Magic Mike: Down Under?

Stay tuned. Season 34 is shaping up to be wild – literally.

Images: Instagram

Guy Sebastian's surprising new career move

Guy Sebastian has announced his surprising new career move, just weeks after revealing he would be leaving his long-held judges role on The Voice Australia.

After spending six seasons on the singing program, Sebastian is set to make a carer pivot into films, as he will make his big-screen debut later this year.

Sebastian will appear in Hindi Vindi: an Australian indie film about a teen musician named Kabir, portrayed by Mihir Ahuja, who is trying to bridge a family generation gap through song.

The Australian Idol winner was originally approached to just write an original song for the movie, before producers to ask him to take on the acting role of James, the father of the teenage singer.

On Thursday, Sebastian was asked on Sunrise about the best part of working on the new film.

“Working with great actors — in the film there is Nina Gunter, who has been in 180 Bollywood movies, and the actor who plays my son in the film as well — absorbing the craft,” Sebastian said

“I am comfortable in the music world. I can sit in my studio knowing I have done my 10,000 hours but having actor friends and seeing how seriously they take the craft, I knew I was venturing into a world that I needed to pull something out from somewhere."

“It is not the hat that I wear all the time. That was good, watching them and absorbing them in being able to turn on a dime and the emotion and that is the biggest thing I took away, how much is involved in bringing a character to life.”

Sebastian spoke candidly about delving into his own ancestral roots for the role, tapping into his Malaysian and Sri Lankan Tamil heritage.

“I moved to Australia when I was six years old or something,” he said.

“There is a lot in this movie that I could draw on personally, my mum is from India and she had a pretty tough life. She was orphaned fairly young. Her story parallels that of my wife in the film."

“My character gets married and takes her away from her family and that is kind of what happened to my mum. At 19 she moved away from her family, so there is a lot to tap into."

“The accent, it actually came naturally because I generally soften my accent. When I am around my older aunties, you can’t be very Australian because they don’t know what you’re saying.”

When asked if Sebastian thought acting would be a new career path for him, he responded, “I don’t know.”

“Originally, I was just writing the music — I would be the singing voice of the character of my son — and it changed into me writing some songs for the film and then weirdly they saw a film clip where I played this ’70s porn star detective."

“They saw that, and they were like ... ‘You are quite natural on camera, can you try out for the role?’ And now I am in it.”

Sebastian has also written an original song, titled Made of Heart, for the film.

Another AO competitor calls out "disrespectful" commentators

American tennis star Ben Shelton has criticised the standard of on-court interviews at the Australian Open.

The 22-year-old made it to the semi-finals with a 7-5 6-4 7-6 (7-4) victory against Sonego, in what will be his second Grand Slam semi-final appearance, taking on Jannik Sinner on Friday.

As he was about to wrap up his post-match press conference, Shelton shared an unprompted take of the Australian Open TV broadcast.

“One thing I just want to say, I’ve been a little bit shocked this week with how players have been treated by the broadcasters,” Shelton said.

His comments come after Tony Jones' controversial comments about Novak Djokovic made headlines, with Shelton making reference to the incident.

“I don’t think that the guy who mocked Novak (Tony Jones), I don’t think that was just a single event.

"I’ve noticed it with different people, not just myself. I noticed it with Learner Tien in one of his matches. I think when he beat Medvedev his post-match interview, I thought it was kind of embarrassing and disrespectful that interview.”

Interesting end to Ben Shelton’s press conference.

Unprompted, he took a moment to tear into the quality of local broadcasting and specifically on-court interviewing at #AusOpen. pic.twitter.com/ig76VrKq2C

— Ben Rothenberg (@BenRothenberg) January 22, 2025

John Fitzgerald had previously been slammed for his awkward interview with Learner Tien, following his victory over Daniil Medvedev, where he had jokingly commented "19-year-olds are not meant to be that good."

Shelton continued: “There are some comments that have been made to me in post-match interviews by a couple of different guys, whether it was, Hey, (Gael) Monfils is old enough to be your dad. Maybe he is your dad."

“Or today on the court, Hey, Ben, how does it feel that no matter who you play in your next match, no one is going to be cheering for you?

“I mean, may be true, but I just don’t think the comment is respectful from a guy I’ve never met before in my life.

“I feel like broadcasters should be helping us grow our sport and help these athletes who just won matches on the biggest stage enjoy one of their biggest moments. I feel like there’s just been a lot of negativity. I think that’s something that needs to change.”

Shelton's comments on Wednesday night struck a nerve with fellow tennis players, with six-time grand slam champion Boris Becker writing on social media: "Absolutely agree with Ben! Courtside interviews way too long after matches … and too personal as well!”

Czech tennis player Jiri Lehecka added: “Well said @BenShelton.”

Image: Nine

Paralympian Dylan Alcott's unexpected career choice

Dylan Alcott has revealed his next career move after retiring from professional wheelchair tennis in 2021.

Since his retirement, the 34-year-old Aussie Paralympian has taken on a commentating role and appeared at the 2024 Paris Olympics, but now he has confirmed a new career move that is a big step away from sports.

Alcott told Daily Mail Australia that he wants to pursue a career in acting.

After taking on his first ever acting role as Marcus in Stan's series Bump, he explained that he wants to get more roles in the film industry.

"I'd been on set before as an athlete but not as an actor and I bl**dy loved it, " he told the Daily Mail.

"It was a good test to me to see if I loved being on a set every day, and I really did so hopefully I'll have more opportunities soon."

Alcott explained that he even took acting lessons and classes, and even hired a coach to make sure he was up to the standard he needed to be.

"I didn't want to be that famous guy that just goes 'I can act', I've done lessons and classes and I've got an acting coach," he told the publication.

"I tried to do the best that I can and everyone was really accommodating."

Alcott, who starred in the fourth season of the show alongside Claudia Karvan and Angus Sampson, recalled how he was able to keep up with his co-stars, despite it being his first time acting.

"The biggest challenge was everyone is a really, really good actor and I was like ''what am I doing?'' when I first got there," he recalled.

"Then I realised that everyone was so accommodating but I could also hold my own."

The Paralympian was fully involved in his role and even created some of his character's jokes, and even does his own stunts.

"Often, if you're an able-bodied person writing a disabled character, you're not sure what you can and can't say, but I was like ''no let's push it'' and it was so cool," he said.

He added that he was proud to be able to provide positive disability representation on screen, which was something he rarely saw growing up.

"[Acting is] something I've wanted to do since I was a kid, I really struggled with disability representation on screen," he shared.

"Whenever it was, it was always super negative and sad and not people being themselves. So that's why I started doing acting and when Claudia and Kelsey [Munro] called me with a role, I couldn't believe it!"

Alcott will be returning to screens as Marcus in the fifth and final season of Bump on Boxing Day.

Image: Allison Voight/ Shutterstock Editorial

"You made me enjoy the game": Federer's emotional retirement letter to Nadal

Roger Federer has penned an emotional tribute to Rafael Nadal ahead of his retirement, reflecting on their stellar careers together.

Nadal’s career officially came to an end when Spain was defeated 2-1 by the Netherlands in the Davis Cup quarter-final in Malaga on Wednesday morning, with Nadal in tears as he stepped onto the court for the final time.

Thousands of tributes poured in for Nadal as his retirement officially began, but Federer's tribute quickly went viral for his emotional words.

“As you get ready to graduate from tennis, I’ve got a few things to share before I maybe get emotional,” Federer said.

“Let’s start with the obvious: you beat me - a lot. More than I managed to beat you. You challenged me in ways no one else could. On clay, it felt like I was stepping into your backyard, and you made me work harder than I ever thought I could just to hold my ground."

“You made me reimagine my game - even going so far as to change the size of my racquet head, hoping for any edge. I’m not a very superstitious person, but you took it to the next level. Your whole process. All those rituals."

“Assembling your water bottles like toy soldiers in formation, fixing your hair, adjusting your underwear … All of it with the highest intensity. Secretly, I kind of loved the whole thing. Because it was so unique - it was so you."

“And you know what, Rafa, you made me enjoy the game even more. OK, maybe not at first. After the 2004 Australian Open, I achieved the No. 1 ranking for the first time. I thought I was on top of the world. And I was - until two months later, when you walked on the court in Miami in your red sleeveless shirt, showing off those biceps, and you beat me convincingly."

"All that buzz I’d been hearing about you - about this amazing young player from Mallorca, a generational talent, probably going to win a major someday - it wasn’t just hype."

“We were both at the start of our journey and it’s one we ended up taking together. Twenty years later, Rafa, I have to say: What an incredible run you’ve had. Including 14 French Opens - historic! You made Spain proud … you made the whole tennis world proud."

“And then there was London – the Laver Cup in 2022. My final match. It meant everything to me that you were there by my side – not as my rival but as my doubles partner."

“Sharing the court with you that night, and sharing those tears, will forever be one of the most special moments of my career.”

Federer signed off the 585-word tribute from “your fan Roger”.

Wimbledon champion calls out commentator's "disappointing" remarks

Wimbledon tennis champion Barbora Krejcikova has called out a commentator for making "unprofessional" remarks about her live on-air.

The Czech player was taking part in the WTA Finals in Saudi Arabia, which was broadcast on the Tennis Channel, when the comments were made by commentator Jon Wertheim.

The 28-year-old player took to X to express her disappointment over the comments, writing, “As an athlete who has dedicated herself to this sport, it was disappointing to see this type of unprofessional commentary."

"This isn’t the first time something like this is happening in sports world. I’ve often chosen not to speak up, but I believe it’s time to address the need for respect and professionalism in sports media."

“These moments distract from the true essence of sport and the dedication all athletes bring to the field."

"I love tennis deeply, and I want to see it represented in a way that honours the commitment we make to compete at this level.”

Wertheim responded to Krejcikova's posts, apologising for his comments and also explaining what happened.

"During a Tennis Channel studio show on Friday, I made some deeply regrettable comments off-air," he said.

"I acknowledge them. I apologise for them. I reached out immediately and apologised to the player.

"What happened? I joined the show by Zoom. In rehearsal we were shown a graphic of a player who had just competed. It showed her at an angle that exaggerated her forehead."

"A few moments later, I was told to frame up my Zoom. I looked at the low camera angle and joked that it made my forehead resemble the photo of the player in question."

"Someone in the control room chimed in and I bantered back. Though this was a private rehearsal, this exchange inadvertently and without context made it to live air."

"I realise I am not the victim here. It was neither professional nor charitable nor reflective of the person I strive to be. I am accountable. I own this. I am sorry."

Jelena Dokic has shared that she would endure "100 years of abuse" to go back in time and represent Australia at the 2001 Australian Open.

During an emotional interview with Carrie Bickmore and Tommy Little, the tennis champion recalled the earlier years of her career, and the abuse she faced at the hands of her father, who was also her coach.

At 17 years old, Jelena was booed off Rod Laver Arena at the 2001 Australian Open after losing to Lindsay Davenport, after she announced plans to turn her back on Australia and represent her native Yugoslavia instead.

The decision not to represent Australia was made by her father, and at that point in her career, he had been banned from attending her matches.

“I would take 100 years of abuse if I could take back not playing for Australia for a few years,” an emotional Dokic told the Carrie & Tommy Show.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Carrie and Tommy (@carrietommyshow)

“He took away from me, something that I loved so much."

“He took that away from me in that moment. "One more shot": Nick Kyrgios makes major career announcement

After two years of dealing with an injury, Nick Kyrgios has made a major announcement about his career future.

The 29-year-old Aussie tennis champion has confirmed he will be returning to the court for Australian Open in 2025, after not playing any professional tennis for 492 days.

His last match dates all the way back to June 13th in 2023, which he lost against China’s Yibing Wu before he took a step back from the court to deal with serious knee and wrist injuries.

While many fans have speculated whether he would ever return to the sport, Kyrgios made the announcement himself while speaking at South by South West (SXSW) in Sydney on Thursday.

“The injury I had was brutal,” he said as a keynote speaker on stage.

“The surgeon said I probably wouldn’t be able to play again. But I said whatever, just try and get me another 2-3 years of my career."

“Everything has gone semi-well and I will be playing the Australia Open this summer.”

While on his hiatus from playing, Kyrios has dabbled in the world of commentating, but he admitted it has been tough to sit on the sidelines for so long.

“It’s been a brutal last couple of years ... but just being out there to play in front of a home crowd ... I just want to be out there, lighting up the crowd and playing in front of my own country,” Kyrios added.

“Whether it is good or bad, it will certainly be a lot of fun, for sure. I am looking forward to it.

“My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a grand slam, and I’ll give it one more shot.”

Sam Mac's surprising career move after becoming a father of two

Sam Mac has announced a surprising career move after becoming a father of two.

The Sunrise weatherman has released a heartwarming children's picture book titled Suddenly One, inspired by his now two-year-old daughter Margot.

Mac explained on The Morning Show on Tuesday that when Margot turned one, he was inspired by her milestone birthday to write some touching words about his firstborn.

“When Margot turned one, you want to celebrate that and all those little moments that happen in that first year so, I just jotted down some thoughts,” Mac explained to Larry Edmur and Kylie Gillies.

“(I was on a) long flight to Perth … (and) I thought, ‘Oh, maybe this could be a poem’. So, a few days later I refined it and posted it with some video to match the words and it had over a million views overnight."

“It really took me by surprise, and (publishing house) Penguin got in touch and said, ‘We think that this is a universal experience. Everyone gets excited about their little ones and those first milestones. Let’s turn it into a picture book’."

“So, over the past year, we’ve been in the process of picking the illustrator, the wonderful Deb Hudson, and refining the text.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Sam Mac (@sammacinsta)

Mac said he hopes the book helped families connect, saying, “(I think it’s) for parents and grandparents to sit down and read it with their little ones.”

“I hope what comes from the book is a great connection point for families. Ian Thorpe opens up on darkest moment of his career

Ian Thorpe has recalled the moment an irregular drug test almost upended his life and destroyed his reputation.

The Aussie swimming legend opened up about a few key moments in his personal life that coincided with the height of his swimming career in a tell-all new book.

The 41-year-old athlete singled out the drug test chapter as one of the darkest moments of his career in a new book Profiles In Hope, written by former NSW Liberal leader John Brogden.

In 2006, Thorpe underwent a routine drug test that returned an irregular result, with French newspaper L’Equipe reporting that he had returned an unusual level of testosterone.

However, results also showed a hormone called leutenising hormone, another naturally occurring substance.

The news of the test gained international attraction, and resulted in Thorpe launching a lawsuit against the newspaper.

“An irregular test isn’t uncommon. They happen. So firstly, no one should know that information to begin with,” Thorpe says in the book, according to the Daily Mail.

“An irregular test means nothing. An irregular test gets thrown out."

He said at the time the speculation that he was a cheat was “so upsetting” and the way the information was leaked to French journalist made him feel “deeply alarmed”.

He also admitted that during the media storm around the testing, he did not want to leave his home and says now he had thoughts about taking his own life and staging it as an accident.

The “Thorpedo” now has the tools in place for his mental health to look back and think he could have handled it better.

“In that kind of state, you’re entirely irrational, your logic is warped,” he tells Brogden.

“It’s only in the periods when you have clarity of mind, when your mental health is good, that you can actually reflect on things and say, ‘Well, I could have done this’.

“I realised what I was doing wasn’t working, and that I needed help. So I got that help, and even though I was still in a long-term depressive state, I got better. I wasn’t at the point of suicide.”

Need to talk to someone? Don't go it alone.
