"I need answers": Devastated widow vows to stage hunger strike

<p>A woman who lost her husband and son in the devastating crash at a pub in Victoria last year has vowed to stage a protest, just days after the driver of the car was dismissed of all charges. </p> <p>In November 2023, 66-year-old William Swale was behind the wheel of his BMW when he suffered a medical episode, crashing into the beer garden of The Royal Daylesford Hotel, killing five people. </p> <p>Charges against Mr Swale were <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/charges-dropped-over-crash-that-killed-five-people" target="_blank" rel="noopener">dropped</a> on Thursday, after a magistrate ruled the evidence against him was “so weak”.</p> <p>Mr Swale's lawyers successfully argued his actions were not voluntary because he was in a state of severe hypoglycaemia, as he is an insulin-dependent diabetic. </p> <p>After hearing that the charges were dropped, Ruchi Bhatia, whose husband Vivek, their son Vihaan, 11, were killed as a result of the crash, says the ruling is as though she has lost them all over again. </p> <p>Ruchi and her nine-year-old son were also injured in the crash, but survived after spending months in hospital. </p> <p>Speaking for the first time since the deadly incident, Bhatia expressed her pain and said it feels like her life has been torn apart again, recalling the horrifying moment she woke in hospital to learn her husband and eldest son did not make it.</p> <p>“Still today I don’t believe that they are not with me,” she told <a href="https://7news.com.au/news/daylesford-beer-garden-crash-victim-ruchi-bhatia-plans-protest-after-driver-charges-dismissed-c-16164598" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>7News</em></a>.</p> <p>“We were just having fun, we were outside, we were all together and the next moment they were gone and I’m never going to see them again.”</p> <p>In court on Thursday, Magistrate Guillaume Bailin found the prosecution case was flawed and decided not to commit Swale to stand criminal trial, as all charges were dropped and Mr Swale walked out of court a free man. </p> <p>Despite the ruling, Bhatia is demanding answers and says her fight for justice is far from over.</p> <p>“He stopped the car in the middle of the road — why did he start his engine again? I need answers for that,” she said.</p> <p>Bhatia and her family are planning to protest, which will include a hunger strike. </p> <p>While Bhatia said she knew the protest wouldn't bring back her family, she said they needed justice to move on from the tragedy. </p> <p><em>Image credits: 7News </em></p>

Jamie Oliver renews vows in Las Vegas

<p>Jamie Oliver is celebrating 24 years of marriage! </p> <p>The celebrity chef and his wife Juliette Norton - also known as Jools - celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows. </p> <p>The couple organised a more fun and laid back ceremony, with a trip to Las Vegas, which, of course, included an Elvis impersonator. </p> <p>"Happy 24th wedding anniversary @joolsoliver 24 years !!! Love you - Las vagus baby !!" “Update me about the divorce”: Groom blasted for terrible wedding vows

<p>A groom has been slammed online for putting "no effort" into his vows on his wedding day. </p> <p>The video of the couple's nuptials was shared to TikTok, where it garnered millions of views and comments absolutely rinsing the groom's poor attempt at heartfelt vows. </p> <p>In the video, the man named Cody was called upon to say his vows to his bride, choosing to say, “I promise to smack that a** every chance I get. "It's not the time for jokes": Bride humiliated by groom's prank at the altar

A 'help me' sign like she's holding you hostage? The crowd was dry."</p> <p>"It wasn't even worth it, the juice wasn't even worth the squeeze. You humiliated this woman for what? So the one woman holding the camera could give a little laugh?"</p> <p>The video has been viewed over 800,000 times, with countless people flocking to the comments to slam the groom's callous actions on the couple's big day. </p> <p>One person wrote, "Her face... Celebrity chef Curtis Stone renews vows in stunning intimate ceremony

<p>Curtis Stone and his wife Lindsay Price have said "I do" for the second time in an intimate ceremony to renew their vows. </p> <p>The celebrity chef and his wife were joined by their two sons Hudson and Emerson for the ceremony, as they did readings and got involved in their parents vow renewal. </p> <p>Curtis and Lindsay first tied the knot in Spain ten years ago, and again travelled to a luxury villa in Mallorca for their renewal in a tiny chapel. </p> <p>Stone, 47, shared a series of pictures from the big day on Instagram and sweetly captioned them, "Ten years down. Bindi Irwin’s unexpected wedding news

<p>Bindi Irwin has opened up about the future of her relationship with husband Chandler Powell, sharing that the two have every intention of renewing their vows. </p> <p>The beloved Australian conservationist wed Chandler in March 2020, just before Australia’s COVID-19 restrictions saw weddings restricted to include no more than five people. This meant, of course, that the happy couple could not have some of their nearest and dearest share in their happy day. </p> <p>“Personally, I'd love to renew our vows one day when Grace is older,” Bindi explained in a candid interview with <em>Hello! Magazine</em>. “It would be lovely to have our closest friends and family with us to celebrate.”</p> <p>And while there may have been no small number of absences at the ceremony, Bindi and Chandler were far from alone, with Bindi adding that “our animals are part of our family. Even though we couldn't have all the human guests we wanted at our wedding, we were grateful to spend the day with the wildlife we love so dearly. </p> <p>“Getting married during the pandemic was certainly a strange experience, but an important reminder that love always wins.”</p> <p>In 2020, Bindi had shared a post to social media about the “very difficult decision” to go ahead with their wedding with the reduced guest list, and wrote of how they were “encouraging the world to hold onto hope and love, which will carry us forward.” </p> <p>Now, it seems, the wildlife warrior is ready to take that hope and to move forward, especially as “we have our gorgeous daughter which makes persevering with our wedding even sweeter.” </p> <p>She didn’t have any specifics to share about the next ceremony, but Bindi did spend some time in her interview reflecting on the 2020 event, sharing everything from the story of her dress to the emotion of her brother walking her down the aisle. </p> <p>“Ever since I was a little girl I've known that I wanted a wedding dress similar to my mum's gorgeous gown,” Bindi confessed, going on to note that the gown in question had been in the family for almost 60 years. She went on to reveal that her dress, one created by an Australian boutique, was “even more perfect than I had imagined.”</p> <p>The family’s day wasn’t only a tribute to Bindi and Chandler’s love, with the Irwins making sure to include the late Steve in their celebration - as well as the family’s furry friend.</p> <p>“On the day we had a candle-lighting ceremony in honour of Dad,” Bindi said, “alongside my favourite photo of him and our family dog, Sui.”</p> <p>She noted that it had “meant the world” to be able to pay tribute to her dad on a day that meant so much to her, and for her brother to have accepted the momentous honour of escorting her down the aisle to her future husband. </p> <p>“I’m forever thankful,” she shared, “for his friendship and support.” </p> <p><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

<p dir="ltr">On her 14th wedding anniversary to Bruce Willis, Emma Heming Willis decided to share unseen footage of the couple’s vow renewal in 2019.</p> <p dir="ltr">Emma took to Instagram to share the sweet video montage of the ceremony that took place in the Turks and Caicos Islands.</p> <p dir="ltr">“On our 10th wedding anniversary we decided to renew our vows in the same place we said ‘I do’ back in 2009. Groom accused of ‘copying’ wedding speech from popular Pinterest post

<p dir="ltr">Footage from an influencer couple’s wedding has gone viral for the wrong reasons.</p> <p dir="ltr">Jadé Tuncdoruk, 27, and Lachie Brycki, 29 tied the knot at Krinklewood Vineyard in the Hunter Valley last October.</p> <p dir="ltr">Tuncdoruk posted a TikTok of unseen footage from her husband’s wedding speech, which now has over 10 million views and a lot of comments accusing Brycki of ‘copying’ part of his speech.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Still can't believe I get to call this man my husband," Tuncdoruk captioned the TikTok.</p> <p dir="ltr">The clip showed Brycki telling his wife: "When I say I love you more, I don't mean I love you more than you love me. I mean I love you more than the bad days ahead of us. Bride replaces wedding vows with fiancé’s cheating text messages

<p>A heartbroken bride has confronted her fiancé at the altar of her wedding ceremony after finding out that he was cheating on her the night before their big day.</p> <p>Casey* was celebrating her final night of being unmarried with her bridesmaids when she received a text message from an unknown number, reported <a href="https://www.whimn.com.au"><strong><em><u>Whimn.</u></em></strong></a></p> <p>Casey was expecting a congratulatory message but instead received a series of screenshots from a conversation involving her boyfriend of six years, Alex*, and another woman.</p> <p>The conversations between Casey’s boyfriend and the ‘other’ woman, who she described as looking the “complete opposite of her”, went back months.</p> <p>The sender wrote to Casey: “I wouldn’t marry him. Will you?”</p> <p>The texts also included selfies of the pair and immediately Casey knew “there was no questioning the legitimacy” of the screenshots.</p> <p>Casey said every message was a “dagger to her heart”, but didn’t know what to do as the wedding would be taking place in a few hours and it was already paid for.</p> <p>So she hatched a plan for the next day. </p> <p>“I was going to go ahead with the wedding as expected, and ‘out’ him in front of our friends and family,” she said.</p> <p>After walking down the wedding aisle the following day, Casey announced there would be “no wedding” instead of reading her vows.</p> <p>“It seems Alex is not who I thought he was,” she told her guests, before reading out every single message he had sent to the other woman.</p> <p><em>"Your body is f***ing incredible. And s** do you know how to use it. I wish my GF (girlfriend) had half the skills you do."</em></p> <p><em>"I miss you so much…I’ve never had this kind of connection before."</em></p> <p>All colour left Alex’s face and Casey let her weeping eyes rise and meet his.</p> <p>The embarrassed groom didn’t have anything to say but walked out of the church in shame with his best man close behind him.</p> <p>“I love all of you and as horrible as this is, I’m glad you all are here,” Casey bravely told her guests.</p> <p>“There will not be a wedding reception today, but instead, there will be a celebration of honesty, finding true love and following your heart even when it hurts.”</p> <p>Although it was not the day Casey has planned, she said despite the heartbreak, the reception was “one hell of a party”.</p> <p><em>*Names changed for confidentiality </em></p>

Council vows to ban cats from roaming outside

<p>A Sydney council has created the purrfect storm, dividing public opinion with its proposal to force cats inside and penalise cat owners who let their beloved pets roam outside.</p> <p>Newly minted mayor Kathy Neilson, of the south-eastern Sydney suburb of Randwick, introduced a motion that could force cat owners to keep their pets inside, particularly at night. Otherwise they could face fines if cats "run free and defecate in public places,” as dog owners are already subject to, reports <a rel="noopener" href="http://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-10-03/randwick-councils-cat-ban-idea-stirs-debate/10331946" target="_blank">ABC NEWS</a>.</p> <p>It has been put forward “in the interest of protecting native habitat and fauna," with the council planning to form a committee to investigate the proposal further, including raising registration fees for cat owners.</p> <p>"We're losing a lot of natural wildlife around parks, because of what the cats are doing,” Independent Councillor for Randwick <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.linkedin.com/in/carlos-da-rocha-b9450041/?originalSubdomain=au" target="_blank">Carlos Da Rocha</a>, who has over 30 years of experience as a senior ranger, told <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.9news.com.au/national/2018/10/02/18/24/randwick-council-sydney-trying-to-ban-cats" target="_blank">9News</a>. “There's no responsible ownership and care factor.”</p> <p>The council’s <a rel="noopener" href="http://www.randwick.nsw.gov.au/services/animals-and-pets/dogs-and-cats" target="_blank">guidelines</a> currently state that “curfews, desexing and bells alone are not effective in protecting our native animals.”</p> <p>But how on earth do you police pooping cats? Liberal Councillor for Randwick Harry Stavrinos told 9News the idea is “laughable and absolutely ridiculous to think we're going to have our rangers jumping over back fences chasing people’s defecating cats.”</p> <p>Stavrinos, a longtime cat lover, said it was unfair to target cat owners, and that the proposed increased registration fee would put considerable strain on seniors and the disabled who may live on fixed incomes.</p> <p>“Increasing the fee just makes life more difficult for these people who rely on [cats] for therapy, love and relaxation,” he told <a rel="noopener" href="https://www.news.com.au/lifestyle/home/pets/sydneys-randwick-council-wants-to-stop-cats-going-outside/news-story/ecbbf0c619b179d850d297ff4aa1f5ef" target="_blank">news.com.au</a>.</p> <p>ABC News reports that some of their viewers also think the planned restrictions are unreasonable.</p> <p>“Responsible cat owners know how to give their cat outdoor time, which is important for overall health and wellbeing, whilst keeping limits on them, i.e. not letting them out at night or when you're not home,” said Cathryn. “My cat would be miserable without any outside time.”</p> <p>But others were all for banning wandering felines.</p> <p>“We have strict rules put in place for dogs so why should cats be any different?” said Kelly. “I'm sick and tired of cats in my local neighbourhood coming inside and pooing and weeing all over our front and backyard.”</p> <p>Viewer Loraine took a pragmatic approach, saying that while cats are natural hunters, they need to be contained to protect wildlife.</p> <p>“I love cats and also our wonderful native animals,” she said. “As such, I understand cats' natural instinct to hunt and our role in keeping our wildlife safe. So I firmly believe there are no such things as "bad cats" but bad owners who do not have their animals desexed and allow them to stray around the neighbourhood.”</p> <p>Various restrictions are in place around Australia, including cat curfews at night, and “cat containment” suburbs in the ACT. As news.com.au reports, the federal government looked at implementing a similar ban to that of the Randwick council proposal in 2015.</p> <p>Dr Sally Box, who became Australia’s Threatened Species Commissioner last year, told the <em>Weekend Australian</em> that such measures aren’t designed to be punitive to cat owners, who may not realise how far their furry friends roam, but to protect large numbers of threatened species in urban areas.</p> <p>“Roaming domestic cats kill about 60 million birds a year,” she said.</p> <p>“We’re encouraging people to have their pets microchipped, desexed and contained at night.</p> <p>“It’s not about preventing people from having cats – they are important companions for a lot of people. I’m obviously disappointed that she’s made that decision, but I respect the decision.”</p> <p>The senator stated that he has always treated his fellow colleagues with the respect and courtesy they deserve and does not condone the mistreatment of others.</p> <p>Following her resignation announcement, Ms Banks has promised to fight for gender equality and has shut down criticism of her playing the gender card.</p> <p>“Women have suffered in silence for too long and in the last twelve months, the world has seen many courageous women speak out,” she said.</p>

Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood renews wedding vows with wife

<p>Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood has renewed wedding vows with his 40-year-old wife Sally in an intimate commitment ceremony to mark their fifth anniversary together.</p> <p>The 70-year-old rocker has 23-month-old twins with the theatre producer.</p> <p>Speaking to <a href="https://www.hellomagazine.com/" target="_blank"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><em><strong>Hello magazine</strong></em></span></a>, Sally Wood said, 'We do celebrate our anniversary, we always go for dinner at the Dorchester and then last year we renewed our vows.</p> <p>“Ronnie and I had a blessing in a church in Berkhamsted, just with our twins, so the four of us. It was lovely. And then it was the Hamilton opening night that evening and we had been invited so, for me, that was amazing.”</p> <p>Sally believes her bond with Woods, who has four children with previous marriages, has only grown stronger in the years since they originally tied the knot.</p> <p>The two are also reportedly looking forward to the royal wedding.</p> <p>“I am so excited about the wedding of Harry and Meghan. Karl Stefanovic and Jasmine Yarbrough exchange vows

We clicked right from the start.</p> <p>“It’s a commitment ceremony. It was lovely.”</p> <p>While commitment ceremonies often involve an exchange of vows and rings, they’re not legally binding.</p> <p>The event was attended by several notables, including Peter Stefanovic and his wife Sylvia Jefferies, Richard Wilkins and <em>Today</em> executive producer Mark Calvert.</p> <p>Victoria Buchan, Nine’s director of publicity and communications, confirmed the event, saying, “Everyone at Nine wishes Karl and Jasmine happiness and good heath for the future.”</p> <p>What are your thoughts?</p>

Marco Pierre White vows to get back at Matt Preston

No one should ever say that about someone else's children. Why the bride always stands to the left of the groom

<p>Many bridal traditions have fallen by the wayside over the years, but aside from the fashion, music and décor, wedding ceremonies remain relatively unchanged. We still have bridesmaids and groomsmen, still enlist the father of the bride to walk his daughter down the aisle, still have a “first dance” and still toss the bouquet.</p> <p>However, there’s one wedding tradition that we’ve always wondered about – why does the bride always stand on the left side of the groom when exchanging their vows? The answer will surprise you.</p> <p>The reason dates back hundreds of years ago to when “marriage by capture” was common practice, according to <a href="https://www.theknot.com/content/must-the-bride-stand-on-the-left" target="_blank"><strong><span style="text-decoration: underline;">The Knot</span></strong></a>. In many cultures in the past – and shockingly in some parts of the world today – it was normal for a man to kidnap the woman he fancied and take her to the altar (whether or not against her will). When it finally came time for the “couple” to tie the knot, the groom needed to keep his right hand (that is, his fighting hand) free in case a rival suitor should come along and attempt to steal his bride at the last minute.</p> <p>In fact, some historians believe honeymoons to be a lasting relic of marriage by capture, in keeping with the practice of the man and his new wife going into hiding to avoid the backlash of relatives and intending for the woman to fall pregnant by the end of their month away.</p> <p>At Jewish weddings, on the other hand, the bride stands to the right of the groom in keeping with the interpretation of a verse in Psalms (45:10), “The queen stands on your right hand in fine gold of Ophir.”</p> <p>Therefore, unless any change might go against your religious beliefs, you’re pretty safe to go ahead and stand however you would like.</p>
