Chrissie Swan has taken to social media to share her impressive sobriety milestone.

Having gone over 600 days without alcohol, the TV and radio host revealed it’s been a year and eight months since she gave up the booze in a bid to ease her anxiety.

Since giving up alcohol, Chrissie has completely transformed both her lifestyle and health, down 90kg by simply picking up healthy habits – which include daily walks and changing her food choices.

“Seem to be getting a lot of messages checking on whether I’ve taken up booze again”, she wrote on Instagram. “I haven’t! 643 since my last tipple! Thanks for asking!” She added.

Speaking on The Project in October of 2021, she said she was reliant on alcohol to deal with the stress of the Covid lockdowns.

Giving up drinking “was a decision I made for myself after giving it a fair nudge in the first lockdown last year”, she said at the time.

Chrissie has drastically transformed her physique over the last year, citing a new diet, daily walks and sobriety as the secret behind it all.

She briefly touched on her weight loss in an interview with The Australian Women's Weekly earlier in the year, saying the lifestyle changes she'd made over the last year had improved her life in so many ways.

Image: Instagram

Albo denies plastic surgery rumours

Anthony Albanese has denied rumours that he has had botox done and that his best weight loss secret is to cut the carbs and “give up the bread”.

The Australian Prime Minister appeared on NovaFM’s Fitzy and Wippa where he spoke about his weight loss journey.

The presenters then pointed out that an article written by the Daily Mail caught their attention in which it questioned whether or not Mr Albanese had botox done.

“It was a headline that struck us, Prime Minister, in the Daily Mail, ‘Botox fillers or just clean living? Albo debuts a fresh new look as he sports a smoother complexion following his weight loss and style transformation’.

“Have you had Botox and how many fillers have you had, Prime Minister?’’ they asked him.

Mr Albanese laughed off the claim and instead took a dig at the reporter and the leading cosmetic injector.

“Seriously, I think whoever wrote that article's been having Botox in the wrong place,” he said.

He went on to talk about how a near death experience in which he was involved in a car crash, caused him to take charge of his health.

“For anybody listening right there might be carrying a couple of kilos. What was your one tip or secret that you had to the weight loss?’’ he was probed.

“Don’t eat the bread,’’ the Prime Minister replied.

“I just had two boiled eggs for breakfast. It keeps you going to lunchtime.

“Stopping eating in between meals is the big thing.”

Mr Albanese confessed that he still indulged every now and then with beer and hot chips, but all in moderation.

“I get to have a beer every now and then. Both light and heavy,’’ he said.

“I have the odd hot chip and all of that. Not be too religious about it. It took a long period. It was over 18 months. But the real motivation, I don’t recommend this, was having a near life ending car crash.

“And that was a real wake up call to get fit and get healthy. It’s worked. I feel much better for it and I just feel much better in the morning but much better throughout the day.”

Image: Getty

"Improvements across your life": Rebel Wilson's trainer shares key secrets

Rebel Wilson made it no secret that she struggled with her weight since she was in her 20s.

But since declaring a “year of health” back in 2020, the Aussie actress has shed more than 30kg thanks to an intense training schedule.

The 42-year-old wanted to get more serious about becoming healthier and hired a team or trainers for her home in Los Angeles and Sydney.

Her trainer in LA was the chief of athletics at F45 Training, Gunnar Peterson, who commends the actress for her dedication.

The 59-year-old trainer gave a bit of an insight into Rebel’s weightloss journey, including techniques, diet and mindset.

"There’s no such thing as typical. The workouts I do here are similar to F45,” he confessed to The Sun.

"You’re not just working on one piece of equipment like a treadmill or a bike or a rower – you’re working in different planes of motions (moving different sections of your body up, down, side to side and backwards/forwards) – the movements are functional, they will serve you in real life.

"It’s a gentle scientific mixture of HIIT cardio, resistance and movement patterns – and you’re going to see improvement across your life. So you’ll be on the treadmill, squatting, pushing a sled, doing dumb-bell rows. Think two to three sets of eight to 12 reps across five different exercises.”

He explained that losing weight is not just physical, but also mentally challenging.

“I think it’s fortifying it, right? You get through certain things that are arduous and then you recognise: ‘Wow, I did that. And I can do that. And I can keep on doing that.”

Rebel’s diet was also restricted by following the Mayr Method which means no snacking, upping protein intake, reducing dairy and gluten, no food after 4pm, no technology, talking or reading whilst eating, and to focus on chewing.

However, Rebel confessed that she would still have two cheat night’s a week, and reminded her fans “you still gotta treat yourself”.

Gunnar offered advice to those looking to get on the health wagon, suggesting to start off slowly with working out, even if it’s once a week.

He also said that if you keep changing your exercise it won’t stick and do what it’s supposed to do.

Images: Instagram

How "The Beast" Chased his massive 60kg weight-loss goal

Mark Labbett, better known as The Beast on the TV quiz show The Chase, has revealed his secret behind his staggering 60kg weight loss.

The quizmaster has credited his lifestyle change and body overhaul to his adorable golden retriever, who he branded as his "personal trainer".

On a UK chat show, Mark said that his pooch Baloo helped him get into the habit of daily exercise.

“My wife promised me that when we first got him she would take care of everything – feeding him, walking him and so on,” he explained.

“That lasted about two weeks before she decided ‘Actually Mark, look at your belly – you need the exercise!’”

Mark and Baloo formed a special relationship and now refers to the dog as his "personal trainer", who incidentally costs a lot less than a human personal trainer.

He continued, “I was walking him around the fields, taking me places … I think he’s helped a lot, simply because I’m doing more activity.”

Mark has been documenting his weight loss on Instagram, with many followers cheering on his success in the comments.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Mark Labbett (@markthebeastlabbett)

Mark has previously opened up about his weight loss on the chat show Loose Women, and how he has dropped several clothing sizes along his journey.

He said, “I am gradually dropping Xs off my size. The real reason for Adele's weight-loss journey

Images: Instagram

Adele opens up about her weight loss journey in an intimate interview with Oprah Winfrey.

In the Adele: One Night Only TV special which aired last night in the U.S, the British singer discussed her 100-pound (45kg) weight loss with the talk-show queen, saying it was “never” about “becoming skinny” but feeling stronger after her divorce from Simon Konecki.

“Once I realised that I had a lot of work to do on myself, I stopped drinking and I started working out a lot….to keep me sort of centred,” she recalled in the interview.

Adele revealed she suffered from “terrifying anxiety attacks” that “paralysed” her completely when her two-year marriage ended in 2019.

The couple, who had been together since 2011 and shared son Angelo, nine, finalised their divorce in January this year. Soon after they split, Adele relied heavily on working with a trainer in the gym to ease her anxiety.

“It became my me time,” she said. “Me having a plan every day….having these sorts of pins in my day, helped me keep myself together.”

Adele stressed that she “wasn’t bothered about [weight] at all” and her work at the gym simply “contributed to getting [her] mind right”. Because of this, she was able to push aside criticism that came with her recent weight loss.

“I’m not susprised or disturbed by any of the [weight comments] because my body has been objectified throughout my career,” she said, “But it’s not my job to make people feel validated by their bodies.”

Elsewhere in the Oprah interview, Adele admitted it was hard coming to terms with being a single parent.

"It's a process. You know, the process of a divorce, the process of being a single parent," she said. "The process of not seeing your child every single day wasn't really a plan that I had when I became a mum. The process of arriving for yourself every day, turning up for yourself every single day and still running a home, running a business.

"So many people know what I'm talking about and I feel like that as well. I juggle those things as well. I felt like not doing it anymore. And also trying to move forward with intention, not just trying to get out of it for no reason. It made my feet hurt, walking through all that concrete.”

"You've been poisoned": Mum's warning over diet pills

Image: A Current Affair

Diet pills may be a quick fix but for one Sydney mother, it almost cost her her life.

Elizabeth Katerina has been in and out of hospital after consuming Fatburners which she purchased online.

The young mum-of-two lost 25kgs in two months from diet pills, the catch being – it almost killed her.

“Eight weeks ago, I just wanted to find a quick route, an easier way to lose the baby weight. I just went on Google. I looked on Facebook and Instagram searching different options, like different brands online, just like online shopping,” Ms Katerina said.

“I came across 3Action Sports Nutrition and I looked at the reviews and they looked really good.” The 25-year-old ordered the 3Action Sports Nutrition Fatburner pills online, from Belgium.

“I took as directed on the bottle. It said “take one capsule after breakfast in the morning and one in the afternoon after food’,” Ms Katerina said.

After a week, her health started to deteriorate. “I started getting really bad headaches and feeling really dizzy. Just lightheaded. My stomach started feeling uncomfortable. I was getting diarrhoea everyday nonstop,” Ms Katerina said.

On the 10th day, her resting heart rate sky-rocketed, so she called an ambulance.

"These Fatburners over stimulated my system to the point where I couldn't walk, I couldn't fall asleep, my heart felt like it was going like brrrrr like this, that's how it felt."

At hospital, she said doctors told her she'd been poisoned.

"I'm not well. My heart rate is so fast, it was just at almost 150 (beats per minute)," she said.

"I'm dizzy, light headed and nauseas. I can't sleep I can't eat.

"My heart-rate was like 158 above that average for a human. An adult should be between 80 to 90 beats per minute. Mine was just chilling at 158, even when I was calm.

"The doctors at the hospital at Royal North Shore, they said to me 'please throw out those diet pills. Whatever was in those Fatburners, they're not good for you, they've over stimulated your system and you've been poisoned'."

Ms Katerina is now seeing a cardiologist, gastroenterologist and taking a cocktail of prescription drugs just to get through the day. She also claims to have contacted 3Action Sports Nutrition to report her reaction and they told her to email them and proceeded to hang up on her.

The Belgian based company has blocked her and her family from contacting them on social media.

She has left a scathing review on Facebook and 3Action Sports Nutrition no longer ship to Australia.

Ms Genevieve Adamo, a senior specialist in poisons information shares “the main concern is products purchased overseas can contain undisclosed ingredients and these can be very dangerous.”

“We get at least two calls a week about exposure to these types of products” Ms Adamo said.

Products available on international websites are not regulated by the TGA.

"So, if you're buying online that just bypasses a whole system of regulation that is put in place," Sydney GP, Dr Brad McKay said.

"If you're buying diet pills online there's no guarantee you're going to be getting what's on the box. It is really the wild west when you're ordering things online."

He said Fatburners like the ones Ms Katerina used can have products like green tea and caffeine extracts in them, which aren't proven to help with weight loss - but could cost you your liver.

It’s been a hard lesson learnt by Ms Katerina, who just wants her normal life back.

Body mass index miscalculation

For the first time in my life, to my horror, I noticed I had developed a spare tyre, so I put myself on a diet to get rid of it.

It was a very simple diet: eat less. I lost 7 kg in three weeks and I looked trim. Bouncing triumphantly off the scales one morning, I decided to check my body mass index (BMI).

To my great surprise, with a BMI of 24.1, I was at the high end of ‘normal’, defined as between 18.5 and 24.9. The charts told me I could lose another 20 kg and still be normal, but that would leave me skin and bones.

It naturally got me wondering: how scientific is the body mass index (BMI)?

It may be a 188-year-old staple of health statistics, but modern health professionals have documented many flaws.

For starters, the BMI doesn’t distinguish whether body weight comes from fat or muscle, so Michelin Man and the Terminator might have the same BMI despite their very obvious differences in fat and muscle distribution.

Neither does it factor in other key health criteria such as age, gender or body type. For instance, people who deposit fat around their waists are at a higher risk of disease than people who deposit it on their hips and thighs.

My concern, however, is that the BMI ignores elementary physics.

The problem traces back to Lambert Adolphe Jacques Quetelet, the Belgian statistician who invented the BMI in 1830.

Quetelet failed to consider the mathematics of scaling. He defined the body mass index as weight divided by height squared.

Note, however, that weight is proportional to volume, which is proportional to height cubed. The upshot of this is that, all other things being equal, BMI varies directly with height, which it clearly should not. (See formula below.)

Perhaps the fault goes back to Jonathan Swift’s wildly popular 1726 tale of Gulliver’s Travels. Swift’s giant Brobdingnagians and tiny Lilliputians could not actually exist.

For example, consider a giant twice as tall as myself but with exactly my shape and looks.

If the giant was standing on a beach with no other objects in sight, a far-off observer could not tell that he was not me.

Because his mass would be proportional to my height cubed, my double-height doppelganger would weigh eight times more than me.

However, the cross-sectional area of his legs would be proportional to my height squared, so they would be only four times stronger.

Those poor bones! They would be over-stressed by carrying eight times the weight.

My giant double would collapse under his own weight. Now create a version of me half my height. He would weigh one-eighth of what I weigh, but his leg bones and muscles would be twice as strong as they needed to be.

Nature understands this, which is why elephants look like elephants and ants like ants.

The BMI formula does not share this insight. It can make tall people appear overweight when they are not.

Compared with a 152 cm (five foot) individual with a ‘normal’ BMI of 22, an identically proportioned 183 cm (six foot) person would have a BMI of 26.5 – overweight.

Based on BMI ranges, most Australians are too plump: 28% are classified as obese, 35% overweight, 35% normal and a mere 2% underweight.

No doubt this skewing towards being overweight reflects a genuine health problem. But it might be affected by the increase in the average height of the population since 1830.

Fortunately for Quetelet, there were few Terminators back then to question his BMI.

And fortunately for Jonathan Swift his satire was not questioned by an incurable engineer who would have pointed out that the Brobdingnagian giants, at 12 times the height of Gulliver, would have weighed more than 100 tonnes, with a BMI in the hundreds.

I don’t suggest changing the way the BMI is calculated, despite its flaws, because we would not want to throw out the past 188 years of BMI records (noting that in most cases the raw data – height and weight – will not have been kept).

Instead, we could adjust the standard BMI numerical ranges for underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese based on height, and perhaps even gender and body shape.

Then your quite trim incurable engineer could relax instead of dieting himself to skin and bones.
Image credit: Shutterstock <!-- Start of tracking content syndication. Working out, I would just feel better,” Adele said.

“It was never about losing weight, it was always about becoming strong and giving myself as much time every day without my phone. “Horrific” dieting invention slammed online

A newly-invented weight-loss tool that stops people from eating by holding their mouths shut has been criticised and labelled as “horrific” by many online.

Researchers from The University of Otago in New Zealand have claimed the DentalSlim Diet Control is a “world-first weight-loss device to help fight the global obesity epidemic”.

Fitted by a dentist, the device only allows people to open their mouth 2mm, which the university has said restricts “them to a liquid diet”.

“It allows free speech and doesn’t restrict breathing,” they clarified on the University’s website.

In a trial of people based in the city of Dunedin, the university said subjects lost an average of 6.36 kilograms in two weeks while using the device.

Professor Paul Brunton, the lead researcher and University of Otago Health Sciences Pro-Vice Chancellor, said the invention was “effective, safe, and affordable”.

“The main barrier for people for successful weight loss is compliance and this helps them establish new diets, allowing them to comply with a low-calorie diet for a period of time,” he said.

“It really kick-starts the process.”

But, the announcement of the invention on Twitter has seen commenters call the invention “horrific” and compare it to a medieval torture device.

Brilliant, I'd like to submit my idea for a device to help short people be taller. pic.twitter.com/5WYp26VbJ3
— Ika Makimaki (fish monkey) (@pezmico) June 28, 2021

Additionally, the British Dental Journal reported that some of the seven participants in the trial “had trouble pronouncing some words” but “felt tense and embarrassed only occasionally”.

It also noted: “One patient admitted to ‘cheating’, consuming melted chocolate and fizzy drinks.”

After two or three weeks they can have the magnets disengaged and device removed. Yes, Adele has sung its praises. But the Sirtfood diet may be just another fad

The Sirtfood diet has been in the news again this week after singer Adele showed off her slimmed-down figure on US comedy show Saturday Night Live.

Adele has previously credited her significant weight loss to the Sirtfood diet. Following her appearance on SNL, there was a spike in people searching the diet on Google.

But what exactly is the Sirtfood diet, and does it work?

What’s the premise?
Two nutritionists in the United Kingdom launched the Sirtfood diet in 2016.

The premise is that a group of proteins called sirtuins, which are involved in regulation of metabolism, inflammation and ageing, can be accelerated by eating specific foods rich in a class of phytonutrients called polyphenols.

Phytonutrients are chemical compounds plants produce to help them grow well or defend themselves. Research is continuing to shed light on their potential benefits for human health.

The idea is that eating foods rich in polyphenols, referred to as “Sirtfoods”, will increase the body’s ability to burn fat, boosting metabolism and leading to dramatic weight loss.

Common Sirtfoods include, apples, soybean, kale, blueberries, strawberries, dark chocolate (85% cocoa), red wine, matcha green tea, onions and olive oil. The Sirtfood diet gets some of its fame because red wine and chocolate are on the list.

Two phases
The diet involves two phases over three weeks. During the first three days, total energy intake is restricted to 4,200 kilojoules per day (or 1,000 Calories).

To achieve this, you drink three sirtfood green juice drinks that include kale, celery, rocket, parsley, matcha green tea and lemon juice. You also eat one “Sirtfood” meal, such as a chicken and kale curry.

On days four to seven, you have 2-3 green juices and one or two meals up to a total energy intake of 6,300 kJ/day (1,500kcal).

During the next two weeks — phase two — total energy intake should be in the range of 6,300-7,500 kJ/day (1,500-1,800 kcal) with three meals, one green juice, and one or two Sirtfood snacks.

There’s a diet book available for purchase which gives you the recipes.

After three weeks, the recommendation is to eat a “balanced diet” rich in Sirtfoods, along with regular green juices.

Positives
The idea of losing a lot of weight in just three weeks will appeal to many people.

The eating plan encourages a range of polyphenol-rich foods that are also good sources of vitamins, minerals and dietary fibre, and would be recommended in a range of diets designed to assist with weight management, or as part of a healthy, balanced eating plan.

A weight loss diet will be effective if it achieves sustained total daily energy restriction. So the biggest benefit of the Sirtfood diet is the daily energy restriction — you are likely to lose weight if you stick to it.

Also, the exclusion of energy-dense, ultra-processed “junk” foods will help lower the risk for chronic disease.

But there are drawbacks to consider too.

Negatives
It would be wise to watch the portion size for some of the foods listed, such as red wine and chocolate.

Like most restrictive diets, phase one may be challenging and is not recommended for people with underlying health conditions without the supervision of a health professional.

The rapid weight loss in the first phase will reflect a loss of water and glycogen, the stored form of energy in muscles and the liver, rather than being all body fat.

Rapid weight loss can increase the risk of gallstones and amenorrhoea (missing menstrual periods).

The food list includes specific products that may be hard to locate in Australia, such as lovage, a European leafy green plant whose leaves can used used as a herb, roots as a vegetable and seeds as a spice. Some other items on the list can be expensive.

Sirt science
Most research has looked at the sirtuin-mediated effects of energy restriction in worms, mice or specific body tissues. No studies have tested the effect of diets that vary polyphenol content on the action of sirtuins in mediating weight loss.

A search on PubMed, the scientific database of research studies, didn’t locate any human trials of the Sirtfood diet. So the short answer about whether the Sirtfood diet works or not is we don’t know.

The authors’ claims about effectiveness are based on anecdotal information from their own research and from personal testimonials, such as the one from Adele.

Considering the hype surrounding the Sirtfood diet against a checklist on spotting a fad diet sounds alarm bells. For example:

does it promote or ban specific foods?

does it promote a one-size-fits-all approach?

does it promise quick, dramatic results?

does it focus only on short-term results?

does it make claims based on personal testimonials?

Looking at the Sirtfood diet, the answers to most of these questions seem to be “yes”, or at least a partial yes.

The best diet for weight loss is one that meets your nutrient requirements, promotes health and well-being, and that you can stick with long-term.

Written by Clare Collins, Lee Ashton and Rebecca Williams. This article first appeared on The Conversation.

If I like it, I don’t want to talk about it,” she expressed.

“Don’t bother. Don’t take a picture. If you like it, I’ll be there. If you don’t, leave me alone.”

It’s possible the mother-of-three feels more outspoken since launching her new gender-neutral clothing line for children, called Celinununu.

She told the Huffington Post:

“I feel that now I have a voice, which is kinda weird as that’s what I’ve been doing all my life – using my voice, but in singing and performing,” she said.

“But I use my voice as well for things that I choose I want to do and things that I say to my team I don’t want to do.”

Do you think Celine Dion’s sudden weight loss is cause for concern?
