Renee Zellweger shines as Judy Garland in first “Judy” trailer
Fans of Hollywood icon Judy Garland are in for a treat, with Oscar winner Renee Zellweger playing the Wizard of Oz star in an upcoming movie.
The biopic, titled Judy shows Zellweger singing a much more mellow version of Garland’s most recognisable song Somewhere Over the Rainbow. The movie, which is set in London in 1968-69 will be released in September.
Judy will shed light on Garland’s tumultuous life and her struggle with countless health problems during her London tour. The actress passed away at the age of 47 due to accidental drug overdose in June 1969.
Zellweger has quite an extensive resume herself, with her most notable role being Bridget Jones. The 50-year-old told People magazine that she took voice lessons and spent two hours a day in the hair and makeup chair to prepare for the Judy Garland role.
Zellweger went on to win an academy award for Best Supporting Actress in 2004 for her part in the movie Cold Mountain.
Garland’s daughter, Liza Minnelli has refused to associate herself with the film, saying she never met or spoke with Zellweger.
“I do not approve nor sanction the upcoming film about Judy Garland in any way,” wrote Minnelli on Facebook in 2018.
