After bringing Queen Victoria to life in the 1997 film Mrs Brown, Dame Judi Dench is reprising her role as the great Queen in new film Victoria & Abdul.
The film explores the extraordinary true story of an unexpected friendship between Queen Victoria and a young Indian man, Abdul Karim.
Based on Shrabani Basu’s book Victoria & Abdul: The True Story of the Queen’s Closest Confidant, the period piece is about Queen Victoria in her later life.
Abdul arrives in England from famine-ravaged Agra to attend the Queen’s golden jubilee celebrations in 1887 and present her a ceremonial coin. Despite being told, “Whatever you do, you must not look at Her Majesty”, Abdul makes eye contact with Queen Victoria and so begins one of the unlikeliest friendships in history.
