40 years of mobile phones in pictures

It’s been over 40 years since the first public mobile phone call was made on 3 April 1973. Today mobiles phones are an inextricable part of people’s lives, almost a necessity in providing easy communication and entertainment. Let’s look back at the four decades of innovation and evolution, from the first incarnations of brick handsets to flip phones to today’s smartphone.

1972 – Mobile concept called a “shoe phone” as it resembled a boot.

1983 – The world's first commercial handheld mobile phone, Motorola DynaTAC 8000X.

1996 – The first flip phone, Motorola StarTAC.

2002 –T-Mobile Sidekick was considered the first modern smartphone.

2003 – With its slim design and solid features, the Motorola RAZR V3 was an instant hit.

2004 – Everybody owned a Nokia phone for a time.

2005 – The Palm Pilot made a splash with the fancy stylus that came with it.

2010 – The Apple iPhone would become a staple in the people’s lives for years to come.

2012 – Samsung Galaxy became one of the main rivals to the Apple iPhone.

2015 – Apple’s iPhone 6 and 6s showed phones are only going to get bigger (but slimmer) from now on.
