Apps that can recognise what song is playing

You know when you hear a song you love but for the life of you forgotten what it’s called? Gone are those days. In the age of smartphone, these song-identifying apps will do the work for you and instantly answer: “What song is that?”

Shazam – free for iPhone, Android, Windows Mobile, Blackberry

The original song-identifying app is still one of the best. Simply “shazam” the song (press a button in the app) and it uses your phone’s microphone to listen to the song being played and matches it against its big database to find the song for you. It provides you with the artist, track name and album. All of them are stored in the app so you can easily refer back to them.

SoundHound – free for iPhone and Android

Have a song stuck in your head but can’t quite remember the name? SoundHound is the app for you then. It can identify a song from you humming the tune or singing a few lyrics but be warned, you have to be fairly accurate because it can’t read minds (yet). Another great feature is that you can tag a song as it’s playing and it will find the lyrics for you.

musiXmatch – free for iPhone, Android, Windows Phone

The best lyric-recognition app, musiXmatch is known for its large catalogue of songs and accuracy. Play a song to the app and it will find the song and lyrics so you can sing along, just like karaoke.

Hound – free for iPhone and Android

This app is great for people who like to learn more about their favourite artists. Simply speak the track name or artist into your phone and it will pull up tour dates, biographies, chart-topping music as well as the artist’s latest social media post.
