The latest Facebook scam targeting seniors is devious
Every Facebook user has been put on notice regarding the latest scam doing the rounds on the social network, with tech experts labelling it “particularly devious”.
The scam uses the social media network’s popular Messenger app to trick Facebook users into thinking they’ve been sent an incriminating video of themselves.
Users receive a video from a Facebook friend who has been infected, which links to a video. If you follow the link, you’re prompted to install an app.
GadgetGuy's Val Quinn told Sunrise: "Basically you'll be taken to a webpage that tries to get you to install something. Once that happens – that's the virus – it's on your machine, then it goes back into Facebook and it sends the same virus out to all of your friends."
Quinn advises Facebook users change their passwords immediately, and if they feel they have been infected by the scam set up a post which says something to the effect of, 'I think I've been infected don't click on a message from me saying “open a video’.”
