The Queen’s favourite TV shows revealed
To the rest of the world, Her Majesty is always poised, considered, and groomed to perfection, but have you ever wondered what happens behind closed doors? As it turns out, the Queen is just like us when it comes to watching telly after dinner. Here are her 6 favourite shows.
EastEnders
It’s one of the UK’s longest-running soaps, first airing in 1985 and producing almost 6,000 episodes to date. The Queen is said to be a fan of the show, set in the fictional London borough of Walford, and she’s not alone – it’s one of the highest-rated shows in the country.
Doctor Who
Doctor Who is almost as British as the Queen herself, so it’s no surprise that Her Majesty is a fan of the 53-year-old sci-fi series. Radio Times recently reported that the royals always bring the complete series with them when they visit their estate in Scotland.
Downton Abbey
Given that her granddaughter-in-law visited the set of the show last year, it should come as no surprise that the royal family (and the Queen in particular) were huge fans of Downton Abbey. At Home with the Queen author Brian Hoey claimed Her Majesty “[loved] to pick out the mistakes.”
The X-Factor
Just like the rest of us, the Queen isn’t immune to the pomp and pageantry of television talent shows. She reportedly told 2010 UK finalist Mary Byrne she would “never miss an episode” and praised the young singer for her “fabulous” performances.
The Bill
Police drama The Bill was a huge hit in the UK (and also found popularity in Australia and New Zealand) and apparently with the Queen as well. However, she reportedly once said of the show, “I don't like The Bill but I just can't help watching it.” We’ve all been there!
Dad’s Army
Author Brian Hoey also wrote that Her Majesty is a huge fan of the classic sitcom Dad’s Army, which ran from 1968 to 1977, “perhaps because she remembers the Home Guard platoon based at Windsor Castle during the war.”
