The weird fact that Netflix knows about you

With further and further technological advancements, sometimes it seems like technology knows more about us than we understand about it. A prime example? Netflix. According to the TV streaming program, Netflix can tell exactly when Kiwis get hooked on a TV show.

After studying data compiled from Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, the USA and more, Netflix has been able to determine the episode after which a viewer goes on to watch the entire season, as, uniquely, Netflix releases entire seasons at once, allowing for “binge” watching. This is the episode on which the company reckons we are “hooked.”

Netflix has also determined that viewers are never first hooked after a single episode. “In our research of more than 20 shows across 16 markets, we found that no one was ever hooked on the pilot. This gives us confidence that giving our members all episodes at once is more aligned with how fans are made,” Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer of Netflix, stated.
