Sally Obermeder opens up about her Christmas miracle

It feels like a tale of two Christmases for Sally Obermeder and her husband Marcus.

Last year, the television host and businesswoman made the long journey to America to await the birth of their second daughter via surrogate.

This year, a little girl Elyssa climbs all over her eagerly anticipating Christmas in her Sydney home.

The 44-year-old told the Wentworth Courier of the Wisconsin trip last year: “It changed our life for the better and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.”

A year one, Sally is reminiscing about those six tough weeks waiting for her daughter but also the beautiful memories that were created when a woman so generously helped her have the baby she so desperately wanted.

“At the time, those six weeks in America were so tough and so taxing but looking back I now feel so nostalgic about that trip,” says Sally.

After discovering she had breast cancer the day before giving birth to her eldest daughter, Annabelle, in 2011, Sally was advised not to undergo another pregnancy. She praised her surrogate Rachel for giving birth to a healthy baby girl.

“Watching her give birth to Elyssa was so joyous and I was just saying to Rachel the other day that if I had limitless money one of the first things I'd do is get on a plane and go and see her,” she said, adding that she felt a special bond with Rachel.

This year will be the first Christmas Sally and her family will spend all together in their home. And Sally and Marcus haven’t ruled out having another child.

“We haven’t shut the door yet,” says Sally.

Marcus adds: “We’re 44 and 47 and I think the door for me is 50 so we’ve got three years if we want to have another baby.”

Back in September, the Daily Edition TV presenter marked five years of being cancer free.

Speaking to Body+Soul she said: “I feel like I've been holding my breath for five years and I can finally breathe properly again.”

“There's always a low-level anxiety you live with — will it come back? Is this going to be it? — especially before a scan,” she added.

“I know the routine well but the inner dialogue and emotion is so full on, I was nervous going to that scan and when it came back clear... My gosh, the relief!”
