Common household item caused Melbourne housefire

A common household item has been blamed for the housefire in suburban Melbourne on Sunday night, with fire officials warning homeowners to be wary.

Firefighters arrived at the home in suburban Canterbury after the occupants had already extinguished some small spot fires in the residence.

The laptop was quickly identified as the culprit which, as firefighters noted, was fitted with an after-market battery purchased online. Fire officials said the computer had probably overheated after being left charging for too long.

"We don't recommend that any appliance be left on continuous charge," Fire Investigator Damian O'Toole told 7 News.

"That includes iPhones, iPads and any laptop computers."
