How to adopt a more positive mindset
If you’ve made it this far in life, odds are you’ve probably had your share of down days and ruts. These nine tips will help you life the negativity and put you in a more positive mindset.
1. Acknowledge the situation – You can’t make a change without acknowledging that there’s a problem that needs to be fixed. There’s no sense in living in denial. Sweeping negative feelings under the rug is a temporary fix that will worsen over time.
2. Use it – Harness what you’re feeling: write a story, compose a song, create a painting. Not only is this a great way to get a better perspective of your feelings, but you’ll feel better for having created something, no matter the outcome.
3. Change your perspective – Rather than thinking “I hate this or that,” try thinking, “I’m not happy with this and can change it by doing that.” Negativity for the sake of negativity will get you nowhere. Be proactive about changing your situation.
4. Try yoga – Exercise is a great way to change your mentality. It releases endorphins, which help keep you happy, healthy and balanced. Yoga in particular is renowned for its calming, clarifying effects. Before you knock it, give it a try. You’ll be surprised at the benefits.
5. Do something nice for others – Instead of looking inward with negativity, strive to do nice things for others. It’s hard to be cynical when you’re helping someone else: you’ll help them while aiding your own growing positivity at the same time.
6. Share - Talk to someone about whatever you’re feeling. Just getting it out there can be cathartic, and you might find out you’re not alone in the situation.
7. Listen to music – Music can easily amplify or alter your mood, whether you want to indulge in your sadness or anger before moving on, or you want to move directly into a sunnier mindset. Listen to whatever you feel will most help you to transition into a happier self, whatever your process.
8. Stop comparing yourself to others – One of the fastest ways to become unhappy with your life is to compare yourself with others. Remember: what you see on social media or hear over the phone are just highlights that a person is choosing to share with you. No one’s life is devoid of trouble. And always keep in mind that acknowledging someone else’s success, beauty, or happiness should in no way lessen or detract from your own.
9. Seek help – If you suspect that what you’re feeling is more serious than just a “rut” or if you feel hopeless or controlled by your own negative emotions, see your doctor or call a help-line to find out how to move forward.
