ALDI special buys rule sparks huge debate

Picking up one of ALDI’s popular Special Buys usually follows a first in best dressed policy, but one customer has sparked a huge debate over the weekly specials.

In a Facebook post, one shopper shared that her husband had managed to grab one of the store’s boxed mattresses, which had limited availability across stores due to product delays.

“Woohoo - hubby got a mattress!” the Victorian customer wrote.

“Pays to ask, it was the last one - was on hold but the lady hadn’t come to collect it, so the worker gave it to him!

“The worker said that the lady asked for them to hold it until 10am, he went in at 2pm - so was much later.”

The story quickly spared a debate online about whether staff could reserve limited items for customers to pick up later.

“I can’t believe Aldi hold things for people ours wouldn’t,” one person said.

“Mine doesn’t. Especially a Special Buy. First in best dressed where I am,” another commented.

With some saying staff could hold items, others saying it’s not allowed, and some suggesting it depends on the size of the store’s warehouse or if you paid for them first or not, confusion quickly grew.

“They held one for my husband this morning without paying a staff member called another store and organised it for him and he went to grab it half-hour between stores,” one commented.

“You’re not allowed to hold items unless paid for in full,” another countered.

Despite some customers confirming that staff members hold items for them, ALDI’s website says otherwise.

In response to an FAQ question, “Can ALDI stores hold an item for me?”, the website reads: “To keep things fair for all our customers, we do not reserve stock.”
