Huge change coming to Coles nationwide
Coles will soon have customers download an app and store their credit card details to use a trolley while shopping.
The supermarket giant is currently trialling the initiative at the Middle Camberwell store in Melbourne’s inner east.
Shoppers will be required to download the Coles sMart Shop app, purchase a $2 digital coin, and then scan a QR code on the trolley.
Once customers have returned their shopping trolley, the $2 is also returned - which helps with keeping track of trolleys.
Coles confirmed that the trolleys would not have a GPS installed and won’t be tracking the shopper’s movements.
“It’s hoped the technology will help minimise abandoned shopping trolleys in the community,” a Coles spokeswoman said.
“[We] are actively working to make this better across the nation, including regular collections of abandoned trolleys with vehicles on the road daily and installing wheel lock systems where suitable.”
Customers who do not wish to use the new technology will be able to speak to a team member who will organise another trolley for them.
