The way you shop at Coles is about to change
Coles has announced a new partnership with eBay, becoming the first supermarket in the world to sell directly on the online marketplace.
Starting Wednesday, customers in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane can shop for more than 4,000 perishable and non-perishable products on eBay Australia.
The offerings include select pre-packaged fresh produce, pantry items, personal care and household products, and pet supplies. Orders made on the platform will be delivered within two to four days.
Customers can also get free delivery for orders over $49 with eBay Plus membership and link their Flybuys account.
Both Coles and eBay said the partnership was to provide shoppers with convenience.
"By partnering with eBay, we are providing our customers another convenient way to access our products and have them delivered straight to their door," said Alister Jordan, chief executive at Coles Online.
The idea was to let customers buy all their needs from one place without having to go to different e-commerce websites.
"It really comes down to convenience and being able to choose from a great range of groceries, as well as those bigger ticket items you can’t get from a supermarket," Julie Nestor, eBay’s CMO told Inside Retail.
"Think about planning for a dinner party and being able to purchase everything from the table setting to the meal ingredients on the one site – it’s a more convenient, seamless way to shop online."
Tim MacKinnon, managing director at eBay Australia & NZ, said, "Coles is one of Australia's oldest and most trusted brands, so we’re excited to welcome them to eBay as they broaden their online channels."
MacKinnon described eBay as "the Westfield of online", with more than 40,000 Australian retailers trading on the site, including Myer, The Good Guys and Target.
"Coles makes sure they are in every Westfield, so they're making sure they are in the Westfield of online."
