Aldi gin named one of the best in the world

Last week, we reported that Aldi’s $7 bottle of One Road South Australian Heathcote Shiraz 2015 had won Wine of the Year in the Best Value Shiraz category at the Melbourne International Wine Competition. Now, it seems the German supermarket chain’s very own gin is just as good.

Aldi’s Oliver Cromwell London Dry Gin, which retails for just $16 a pop, beat out spirits four times the price to win a gold medal at the International Wine and Spirits Challenge.

In fact, the chain took out a staggering 20 medals at the event for their low-cost, high-quality liquor. “[Aldi] consistently showcased high-quality products in the blind tastings, which demonstrates that you don’t have to compromise on price to enjoy great tasting drinks,” an IWSC spokesperson said.

The award-winning gin isn’t available down under just yet, but don’t you worry – our local offerings are just as acclaimed. In addition to its 40 (yes, 40) award-winning wine varieties, Aldi has received accolades for eight of its spirits, including its 2015 gold medal winner Darley's London Style Gin, which sells for $28.

Who says you need to burst the budget to enjoy a nice, refreshing night-time drink?
