“He looked like Baz”: Amanda Keller opens up about visit to Barry Du Bois in hospital

The Living Room’s Barry Du Bois plans to be back on the show in a few weeks after his chemotherapy treatment and three weeks in isolation.

Last year, Barry announced his cancer has returned and had been diagnosed again with multiple myeloma.

He has been getting treatment in Sydney’s St Vincent’s Private Hospital since January 31.

In an emotional segment of the show, which airs tonight on Channel 10, co-host and friend Amanda Keller visits Barry in hospital.

“I hadn’t seen him for a while and he was going through a really hard part of his treatment,” Amanda told Sydney Confidential of her visit.

“It basically involved him getting a huge dose of chemo that almost killed him and he’d been very sick with that.

“To know someone you love go through that is terrible; when I walked in and saw him we both cried.

“He looked good. He looked like Baz.

“And during the time together, we laughed and cried in equal measure. There is a lot to be optimistic about.”

In tonight’s episode, Barry tells Amanda he plans to be on The Living Room couch in weeks.

“I got really angry but I said this can’t be my time … so I just prepared myself as best as humanly possible,” he says.

“I got physically fit, fitter than I’ve been in a long time. So I started this race as favourite.

“I’m going to do a couple more workouts today, I’m going to eat a bit more and just do the best we can to get myself out of here as soon as possible … and back on the couch.”

Barry issues a message to all his fans who have given him love and support during this incredibly tough time.

“I don’t think love is far off fixing the world ... it’s what keeps you going,” he says.

Each year in Australia about 1700 people are diagnosed with myeloma. There is currently no cure for myeloma, but treatment can be successful in controlling the disease.
