Glenn McGrath opens up about how he almost lost his second wife Sara

Almost a decade after Glenn McGrath lost his first wife Jane to breast cancer, the Australian cricketing legend has spoken for the first time about the horror pregnancy complications that nearly claimed the life of his second spouse Sara.

In a tell-all interview in Sunday’s Stellar Magazine, the 47-year-old said, “(The doctor said she) was really ill and wouldn't have lasted another 24 hours.”

“Her lungs were filling with fluid and she was struggling to breathe.

“Afterwards he told us Sara was one of the worst two cases he'd seen in his career.”

Sara was forced into labour seven weeks premature, after waking up with a concerning pain in her ear. After her blood pressure was taken she was rushed to hospital and diagnosed with pre-eclampsia, a life-threatening condition.

Doctors administered steroids to build up the unborn baby’s lungs, but emergency surgery was still required. Thankfully, Sara pulled through and gave birth to the couple’s first child, Madison, who is now two years old.
