Princess Mary’s father-in-law transferred to palace “to spend last moments”

A terrible start to 2018 for the Danish royal family just got worse with the news that Princess Mary’s father-in-law, Prince Henrik, has been transferred from a Copenhagen hospital to the family’s residence, “to spend his last moments”.

According to a statement from the palace, the 83-year-old French-born husand of Queen Margrethe is in a condition that remains “serious”, with no further details given.

Prince Henrik was hospitalised with a lung infection earlier this year, with Crown Prince Frederik leaving the Winter Games in Pyeongchang as his father’s condition worsened.

Members of the family reportedly visited the prince at Copenhagen’s university hospital over recent days, before he was transferred to Fredensborg Palace where he lives.

“Here the prince can be surrounded by the family and stay in an environment that matters to him,” Lene Balleby, head of communication, told Danish media.
