The different types of hearing loss explained
One in six Australians suffers from hearing loss. While it can occur within any age group, it is older people that are more likely to be hearing impaired.
Hearing can be tested to determine the type of hearing problem, which can then help with treatment.
Conductive hearing loss
This is when the hearing loss is due to problems within the ear canal, eardrum, or middle ear.
Caused by:
- The formation of the ear
- Allergies
- Perforated eardrum
- Impacted earwax
- Fluid in the ear
- Ear infection
- Trauma such as skull fracture
- Genetic conditions
Depending on the nature of the cause, treatment can include simple medications, hearing aids or surgery to correct the issue.
Sensorineural hearing loss
Also known as nerve-related hearing loss, this is when hearing loss is due to problems within the inner ear.
Caused by:
- Ageing
- Disease and tumours
- Head trauma
- Changes in air pressure (such as on aeroplanes)
- Exposure to loud noises (such as working with machinery)
- Hereditary disorders
Treatment varies but can include the use of steroids, hearing aids, surgery or cochlear implants.
Mixed hearing loss
A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss, so both the middle and inner ear are affected.
