4 very simple rules for getting organised

So many of us believe that being messy is a way of life, and that tidy people are born, not made. But learning how to be better organised around the house is surprisingly simple, and requires just a little extra thought and planning. To help you get started on your new life as an organisational expert, here are some handy tips:

1. Don’t cling

Just because something was once useful to you, or has been in your possession for a number of years, that doesn’t mean you must keep it forever. If you no longer use it – whether because you have a newer version of the item, or you simply no longer have need for it, then it is time to let it go. To avoid creating more landfill out of a still useful object, consider giving it to a friend, or donating it to a charity shop.

2. Make time

Too often, people only tidy up their homes/cars/offices when the situation has reached a point of chaos. But making time to regularly tend to organisation can help avoid these crisis points altogether. If you set aside time to work on your tidiness or organisation each week (or even month), you’ll be amazed at how seldom you need to drop everything in order to regain a semblance of control.

3. Organise smarter

If you use something every day, then it makes sense for it to be easily reachable and convenient. When organising your space, take the time to think about what things deserve to occupy the best spaces, and which can be relegated to the back of a cupboard. For example, your kettle could conceivable sit on your kitchen benchtop because you’re likely to use it a couple of times a day. However, your slow cooker could go at the back of a cupboard until the weather turns cooler and it’s time for stews.

4. Don’t overspend

Some of us believe that organisation requires the buying of various containers and gadgets. However, if you don’t first evaluate your organisation plan, you’re likely to just end up with more clutter than when you began. If you have your heart set on a matching set of storage boxes or pantry baskets, make sure you’re not wasting your money by sitting down to draw up a plan and measuring your spaces so that you can find exactly what you need. If you’re less concerned with the aesthetics of your organisation, then you may find cost-effective ways of implementing storage systems – such as shoe boxes
