8 anti-ageing myths you need to stop believing

When it comes to the ageing process, myths abound. From those that make sense, at least logically, to the completely weird and whacky, you could be forgiven for wondering what you actually should be doing and what you can stop worrying about. We’ve separated the fact from the fiction so that you don’t have to. Read on to find out which “beauty facts” are actually beauty myths.

1. Smiling causes wrinkles

If you believed a number of famous celebrities, you’d never crack a grin again as the process creates irreversible lines. Fortunately, you don’t have to adopt an expressionless mask just yet. There’s no evidence to back this one up and even if there was, living a life without smiling is going to be one tough task!

2. Scrubbed clean skin looks younger

Scrubbing and harsh cleansing of your skin is actually incredibly damaging and can speed up the ageing process. Using a gentle, cream-based cleanser and treating your skin as the fragile surface it actually is, is your best bet for a healthy, youthful complexion.

3. Skincare is one size fits all

With the number of “miracle” beauty regimes out there, you could be forgiven for thinking that the only route to a youthful glow is through one of them. False. No two skin-types are the same and what works for one, may not work for the other. While simple steps like cleansing and applying an SPF are universal, the type of products you use is an individual process and best worked out in consultation with a beauty therapist or dermatologist.

4. Standing on your head halts the ageing process

All we have to say about this one is a big NO.

5. The higher the price, the better the skincare

While investing in good quality products is nice, spending a great big chunk of money doesn’t guarantee results. There are plenty of excellent quality skincare ranges available at very reasonable price points. The key is shopping around the seeing what works for you.

6. The SPF in your make-up is enough

Sunscreen is the best anti-ageing ingredient there is. That’s why applying a “proper” sun protection product is essential. The SPF in your foundation or powder is not going to be enough to protect your skin properly.

7. Facial exercises can fix wrinkles.

There is no evidence that this process actually works and in some cases it is thought that over working of the facial muscles can actually lead to more wrinkles. Best avoided!

8. The newer the facial treatment, the better

Just because something is the ‘new thing’ doesn’t make it the best thing, especially when it comes to skincare and treatments. Consult with a qualified and experienced beauty therapist or dermatologist if you’re interested in investing in a treatment. They’ll be able to assess your individual skin type and recommend something for the best results.
