You should throw out these beauty products now!
When was the last time you saw the bottom of your cosmetics bag/drawer/cupboard? If it was more than 12 months ago then it may be high time for a cosmetics cull. Products that you use on your face, eyes and mouth can act as a breeding ground for bacteria, largely due to the almost constant contact they have with your fingers and skin. Even if you use a cosmetics brush or super clean fingers, bacteria will still find a way to sneak in meaning that an out of date or long opened product can end up being the cause of continued skin problems or irritation. Spending a few minutes every couple of months sorting through and binning bottles or tubes that have seen better days helps ensure the spread of bacteria and infection is kept to a minimum and a plentiful supply for effective cosmetics when you need them.
Check out the use-by/throw-by dates of the following then assess your collection to see what can be kept and what should be binned.
- Mascara – Mascara is often one of the longest kept products with the shortest shelf life. Your tube should be replaced every three to four months due to the plethora of bacteria that is pushed into the tube by the wand. Recurrent blocked tear ducts and eye infections can both be caused by old mascara so binning and buying a new tube is essential.
- Lipstick – A standard lipstick can be kept for around 12 months, provided you don’t suffer from cold sores or other lip infections. Lipstick has high oil content which prevents bugs from growing and breeding in it. It’s important to note that you should never apply lip product to lips with an infection and if you do, bin them straight away.
- Liquid foundation – Foundation, especially ones that contain high water content, can be a breeding ground for irritation causing bacteria. Purchasing a pump top bottle is your best bet for ensuring product longevity and will give you a good 12 months of solid use due to the airtight nature of the seal.
- Powder products (foundation/blush/bronzer) – Many of us will have a powder compact from years ago stashed somewhere in our make-up draw. While powder products tend to be pretty hardy, they are in regular contact with our fingers and/or makeup brushes so 12 to 18 months should really be the limit for keeping them. Making sure you keep your makeup brushes sponges and brushes scrupulously clean also helps extend the life span of your products.
- Face wash – Generally speaking, you’ll use up your face wash well before it’s time to bin it but if you alternate products or have a cleanser/wash product that you only use one to two times a week, assess it after six months. If the product has changed in texture, began to separate or smells strange, bin it immediately.
- Face cream – One of our most expensive beauty purchases, extend the lifespan of your chosen potion by choosing a pump top bottle to prevent bacterial contamination and allow it to be kept for up to 12 months.
- SPF – An active, in date SPF is essential for the Aussie weather. Experts recommend using your SPF for a season (three months) before replacing to ensure maximum efficiency.
