Inexpensive DIY beauty treatments

Did you know some of the active ingredients in expensive skin treatments can be found next to your baked beans and cereals in the pantry? Save yourself $$$ with our home spa treatments…

Tea for shiny hair

Tea adds shine to hair by lowering hair’s pH and closing the cuticle.

What You Need: 2 tea bags (chamomile for blonde or grey hair, black tea for brunettes, rooibos for red hair) and two cups of boiling water.

Brew the tea bags in two cups of boiling water for 10 minutes then remove the tea. Wait for the liquid to cool to a warm temperature then pour it over just-washed hair and massage in. Leave for 10 minutes then rinse, wash with shampoo, and condition.

Pigmentation mask

Vitamins A and C in this mix create a strong antioxidant formula that helps the growth and repair of skin cells. It can also be used on pigmented hands.

What you need: 2 lemons, 1 cucumber.

Finely grate the cucumber and dispose of excess water. Juice the lemons and mix with the cucumber. Apply to the face, concentrating on areas of dark pigmentation and leave for 30 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Berry face scrub

The natural fruit enzymes slough off dead skin cells while anti-oxidents help repair and grow skin cells. The addiction of honey hydrates dry skin.

What You Need: 3 strawberries, a handful of blueberries, 1 tbsp honey.

Blend the berries and mix with the honey. Massage the mixture into your skin, then rinse with warm water.

Cornmeal foot treatment

Cornmeal is a great exfoliator for the thicker skin on your feet, plus it has antifungal properties, while banana helps soften the skin.

What You Need: 2 tbsp cornmeal, 1tbsp mashed banana

Mix the cornmeal and banana together until the mixture has the consistency of wet sand, then massage all over feet, paying particular attention to callouses and hard skin. Rinse.
