7 vintage beauty secrets you can (and should) still use today
With all the beauty products available today it’s enough to make anyone feel overwhelmed. So we thought we should go back to basics and find out what ladies of the past used to do before all these fancy, expensive products were thought up. These are the retro beauty tips you can still use today.
1. Sea salt baths
Laden with minerals, including magnesium, calcium, sodium, and potassium, sea salt will leave your skin feeling soft and silky. It will also help restore the protective barrier in skin.
2. Whiten teeth with bicarb soda
Before the advances in toothpaste, people in the 60s and 70s would rub bicarb soda to get their teeth sparkling white.
3. Mint leaves for dark circles
A vintage beauty secret for banishing those dark circles under your eyes was to crush a few mint leaves and apply on your dark circles. Leave for 10 minutes and wipe off.
4. Cold water for smooth skin
Joan Crawford once famously revealed how she kept her face so smooth and taut: she splashed her face with ice cold water 25 times every morning.
5. Talcum powder for greasy hair
Ladies of the past would sprinkle talcum powder on their greasy roots to maintain a fresh hairdo.
6. Spraying perfume onto hairbrush
As Coco Chanel says, “A woman should wear perfume wherever she wants to be kissed.” A retro trick to make sure your perfume lingers was to spritz it on hairbrushes so the scent would linger on your locks.
7. Strawberries to clean the face
In the swinging sixties women would blend strawberries and use them as a cleanser. The fruit would give them a natural glow, not to mention leave the skin smelling deliciously of strawberries.
